Whilst I agree collecting is best, I'm not convinced collecting the current gen games are as vital as most now rely on huge downloads rather than stored on the disc (EG .COD), and constant online connection, so even with the disc in the future you can still be cut off down the line. The oldest game I have for an example of this is GT5 which I can't get working on my ps3 as the last update they did corrupted the game, it just keeps trying to download something that's not there. I think switch games are still ok to collect and single player games like Hogwarts, GOW on PS5 but you need to be careful with the online connection ones that require PSN or publisher servers. Great vid 👍

100% agree and thank you for the comment. It’s a reason why I have such a small ps5 collection as they all need massive downloads like you said + you can get most with your ps+ subscription anyway. I’d love physical to stay relevant but I fear that’s not the case.

They just cancelled another twisted metal game that was in development so it will take even longer for a new one to come out, probably for the best as it was going to be live service but the issue is that it is driving the price of the physicals even further up.

Hot take, 'You can sell the physical', but what if you spent nothing and just pirated it all and had all 600+ games on a HDD/SSD. All of these games are older, the devs are never seeing the money, buying them is not supporting them, only resellers. But the enjoyment of physical collecting is very valid, but id be weary - quality over quantity, especially since you are not going for a full set - but you cover this well, you get what you like, not for the "my collection is worth X" good stuff. I loved collecting physical for years, but then something clicked and I thought "wow I don't care about these plastic boxes" and took the digital pill 🤮 BUT now I dont need to worry about disc rot or the fact that maybe in 5-10 years no one else even cares and cant sell on. Maybe im just being a negative nancy - but I still have just a handfull of physicals that were close to me, SH2, Metal gear .etc I did move onto collecting other things so I am very hypocritical. But too many people buy shovelware or sucked into full sets they'll never complete, then are stuck with shelves of bargain bin e-waste. 🤐 PS2 was my favourite for collecting, but the heavy hitters, niche cult classics for it are not cheap! Dreamcast collecting rocks too. But yeah man, all hobbies, do it for you indeed. 👌

I get exactly where you’re coming from and it’s a great point. You can just have everything onto a ssd, I think a healthy balance of both is good. I collect due to liking what I collect/ nostalgia. Box art etc. I understand some people think it’s a “waste” blah blah, but if something makes you happy 1000% go for it. Thanks for the comment!

Almost every game for the old retro systems is now preserved one way or the other, they can easily be stored on a flash-drive or ODE as well. With the inflated prices that often are way higher than they are worth, there is little incentive anymore to buy tons of retro games. They are still played on original hardware, just in a much more convenient way IMO. It's different with later games from the PS3 and upwards, since most of them have day one patches and what not. Although i still support physical i buy lots of Switch and PS4-5 stuff, i just don't see the point of buying 30-40 year old games anymore from scalpers.

While I agree prices are definitely inflated due to scalpers/ resellers, I feel owning physical is a good way to preserve your own nostalgia and feelings for certain games. Emulators etc exist granted and are great, me personally just doesn’t hit the same. Like you said later stuff ps4/5 I feel it’s what ever is cheaper, physical or digital, as you need to patch etc download content anyway! I appreciate the feedback

@@lawnasRetro To each their own, but i just can't defend prices like $200-300 and above for retro games, just to get some cover art and manual to look at. Most of the prices has just gone bonkers, the thrill of the retro hunt goes away seeing prices like that. I quite like old games, but i bought most of them 10-15 years ago before the prices went south. Now we are at the age of technology where it's not hard to play them accurately anymore. With flashcards or ODE, you preserve the games in your library like NAS server etc. Then copy the games you like for your own entertainment. I like to play on original hardware, so something like the Mega SD, is perfect for me to play Mega Drive and Mega CD games on OG hardware. I can live without tons of boxes and manuals that i never read, just to make them look cool on my shelf. If the prices was like they were back in 2010-12, then i would have bought more since they were cheap. But sadly the increase in popularity has inflated the prices to such degree, that it gives bitter taste in the mouth. Although there are still cheap games to collect, PS2 has still tons of bargains same with the OG Xbox. From that generation and upwards there are still so many games to buy for cheap, that i mainly focus on that instead. Old roms can be played in so many ways these days, including hardware accurate FPGA technology like the MISTer for example. Things and technology moves in a rapid speed, so it's not comparable to like just 10 years back. But by all means, if you like to collect old video games and it gives you joy then continue to do so. The whole things about retro games these days are very subjective, but that makes things more interesting. At the end of the day, what matters is that we can enjoy our games one way or the other. interesting topic though 😀

My entire gaming library is digital. But I don't play my games online. I can't stand online gaming. I have emulators/ roms, and standalone games that I play on my laptop, not from some server.

That’s awesome, online isn’t for everyone. I prefer single player games as you get more of an experience with them!
