Great video! So true I agree! I’ve been taking photos since 1994, used to work as a wedding photographe back in the day, and have tried many films and cameras (digital and analogue) over the years. I’ve had Leica film cameras too (mp, m2, M6 x3). The closest digital camera I have used to film is The M9. If you set the colours to medium heigh saturation and contrast to medium high in jpeg format you get very close Kodak ektachrome slide film colours. It you set black & white to high contrast in jpeg format you get very similar tonal range to Agfa Scala 25iso slide film. These were my favourite films back in the day.

M9 for me is the best looking digital M and the closest to film M even more than M10. The reason is: -the frameline window -the lens release button is the same with film M -the hot shoe design is the same with film M -the frameline preview similar to the film M -the cut corner on the top plate makes the overall camera looks very similar to the film M -the black M9 is black paint instead of chrome so it will brass nicely like the film M

I’m in a similar situation where Fuji is my main setup but I wanted the M experience. I ended up landing an ME (slightly newer M9 with a couple of minor differences) with a replaced sensor. The shooting experience for me is very reminiscent of film. While the colors straight out of camera also didn’t wow me the way others claimed they would, I find that they respond extremely nicely to saturation boosts in CaptureOne - they reds from a CCD are my absolute favorite.

Kolari Vision is offering replacement cover glass using a thinner layer with more transmissible light. I may end up going that route. You’re 100% correct about Fuji vs Leica color. I completely agree about the scanning film issue. I think that’s by far the biggest problem in the still film industry/community. That the marked cares so little that people start scanning with their DSLR and some guys plug in for Lightroom (which is awesome). And it’s not like scanning film can’t be fun. If you can get a lab scanner, even a Pakon you can get the most amazing results and it’s a super pure experience because you only get to use the same color and density controls you’d get when doing an analog enlargement. I honestly don’t know why nobody has made a scanner with a mid level aps-c sensor and a fixed macro lens. Like most of the components you’d need for building a simple Pakon-like scanner with a normal CMOS sensor are components you’d find in a beginners DSLR for less than a thousand bucks. That’s actually something I’m gonna look into getting made just because it bothers me so much that I’d have to pay $2K for a 18 year old scanner that used to cost 200 bucks just to have fun scanning and not take for ever. Also keep you rangefinder windows clean man!

But yeah DSLR scanning is also tedious, that’s why I got myself a Fuji Frontier now.

I bought an M9 back in 2009... It convinced me to never buy a Leica ever again. I had to send it in TWICE for problems/failures and after the second time (and before I might get the dreaded sensor rot) I decided to sell it and cut my losses. I LOVED some/most of the lenses and the way they rendered (but not the most modern ASPH lenses, they are way too nervous). I searched out good copies of the older Mandler-designed lenses for the most part. I really liked the way the sensor rendered, but it was a bit limited in its' abilities since it had such low DR. But what it did do, it did well. The camera had a shutter failure and it scratched the sensor cover glass. Then, the photosensors that read the lens codes failed... This all happened in the first 1,5 years of owning it. Through it all, the VF was crooked and they never fixed that, so I found myslef having to "correct" for the crooked VF on every shot. When I got it back the second time, I started hearing about people getting the sensor rot problem and I decided I couldn't deal with it anymore. What a complete failure of a camera. Life's too short to deal with absolute crap cameras, even if the lenses were really great.

For me the M9 colors really come out in the reds, like those flowers at 5:08 and the red leafs at 7:40, I don't get those reds with current digital cameras. (Edit: also the purples of the flowers at 3:56, look at how much more intense the purple is). Also try photographing some children toys in those bright candy colors and you'll see the difference. Blueish water and glass and reflective surfaces also come out gorgeous in the M9.

This was fun to watch! Bought one of the first M9 and used it for 10-years with joy. The ONLY reason I sold it (had the sensor replaced) was that I got my ideal monochrom, and couldn’t afford/justify both (did end up with an SL for color and more modern). The monochrom, M9M, or whatever you want to call it, was my digit-film-like camera that is an endless roll of B&W, taking me back 40 years and my early Leica days.

I own an M2 as well. Very nice pairing! I have also found that b&w jpegs from the M9 look very similar to Kodak Tri-X. But without the lovely film grain, of course.

@@janosb5953 How so? I'll try again: Film photography requires practice. Practicing with film is expensive and you don't get to see the results right away. The next best thing is to have a digital camera that behaves a lot like film with exposure, iso levels, controls and how the files look straight out of camera. Practicing on such a camera has improved my hit rate on film quite a lot. Better this time? :-)

The M9 is leica's most game changing modern camera - outputting images that still compete in 2045. The only issue I had was carrying around as many batteries as I would rolls of film! Otherwise, I hope to be buried with this iconic beast. As aside-note, the production of the bulk of youtube videos needs to catch up to you my friend. Hallo GX Ace, greetings from Germany, Wetzlar Land. And welcome to the M9 Club. People rave about the colors of the Kodak sensor because it has a unique pale palette from what I see biasing a bit to magenta. In 2009 this was unique and nice, today I totally agree that FUJI color science is more punchy. But besides that, I sold all my FUJI stuff for a Leica M9 with several 7Artisans and TTartisan lens. Don't ask me why, I feel more relaxed with this combo, and the DNGs hold up to modern standards more than very well. A different approach though. Did you use DNG or JPG? Last comment to the sensor issue: Colari does not change the sensor unit, they change the filter glass in front of it that is prone to corrosion if not changed. So this surgery does not mean a change to color output, what is very nice, in my opinion. Stay true to your inspiring channel!

Which are your favs, which photos are your favs and what they were shot on. I think you say 50mm is your fav focal length, and you mention summi lens in this one, but would love to hear among leica and fuji and anything else you shoot, what you got the best stuff from for you. Also, ever tried Ricoh gr iiix? - just asking as you were looking for a stealth camera and Ricoh colors and image quality is quite good. Thanks!

I have an M8 and love it for all the same reasons of it being like a film camera. I also bought a leather case from Luigi Cases on eBay. A guy in Italy that hand makes a ton of cases and his cases for the M8 and M9 have a removable flap to cover the rear screen. I like the flap because it makes the camera feel like a film camera even more. I never check the screen and just know weather or not I got the shot. Plus it help protect the screen from getting scratched.
