    Hello, I found you over on the Review Master's channel. I wanted to say thank you for that tip about Rode and Gator mic clamps working with that super expensive O. C. White low profile arm! I had been looking everywhere (on KZread for that information). I would suck it up for the premium price of the arm but the clamp price just didn't seem right. And I actually use the SM57 sibling the SM58 for exactly the same reasons that you mentioned. And yeah, it is not the prettiest on camera but it sounds good. I also think it would look nicer with one of those flat top filters too but I keep mine off camera. But it is starting to grow on me, as long as the silver ball is covered with foam. LOL!

    Couldn’t agree more! I can’t preach it enough on my channel for reviews…spending $400 on the Shure SM7B is OVERKILL. Buy it if YOU LIKE IT, but don’t buy just because everybody else has one. There are so many excellent options out there! You can even slip this mic into a DIY mod housing kit and hide the look, getting that awesome SM57 sound and it will look more like the SM7B without the price tag. Great video, great content. I agree. There is no need to spend 400 USD. These stage mics are doing a great job, especially in an untreated environment. I purchased lately the Sennheiser e835 for 90 bucks after comparing with the shure SM58 in the studio of my favorite shop. Its amazing for the price. With my, a bit bassy voice, much clearer than the Shure in the midtones and not these cramped bass sounds in the lows. Very strong build quality a.s.o. In any case, we get lots of mic for the money.

    I find the sound quite fatiguing after a very short time. With this nicely treated room I would go for a condenser mic instead to sound more natural. Like a Line Audio CM4 for about the same money, still with a small form factor. I guess the windscreen and the shock mount would be half the price of the mic itself.

    The audio in this was butchered, it was edited with the free version of davinci resolve which gives you a very low audio bitrate once it's exported. I'll re-record this style of video in premier for better results, also figured out some better gain settings for the GoXLR + Cloudlifter that aren't so abrasive.

    Overall, I agree with you about the SM57. Using the Shure wind/pop screen, it replicates the SM7 quite well, without the low output level and higher price of the SM7. It has been the mic of choice for American presidents for many decades. However,... BEWARE... when buying a used SM57, as there are many counterfeits of the SM57 on the used marketplace, and quite often, the sellers of those mics are not even aware they're selling a knock off. One is better off buying one new from a reputable dealer than ending up with a fake.

    SM57/58 are pretty much identical mics, the only real difference is the design of the end. The 57 has that resonance cap, the 58 has the dome style, but the sound out of them may as well be 1:1 since the construction is the same. Can't go wrong with either!

  • @via_negativa6183
    @via_negativa6183 Жыл бұрын

    Interestingly enough I tested this mic and a beta58a last week against a sm7b as I was curious about the difference. Now Although it's much cheaper I still opted to stick with the sm7b, the sm57 needed a pop filter and it wouldn't stay stable on my boom arm. Sm57 is a better choice to mic an instrument. Definitely a good idea if you can resolve these problems ( probably with those accessories) and want to save a bunch of money though. Also you shouldn't need a cloudlifter in this day and age with most interfaces I'm doing it with a 100 dollar maudio 192:4 air which still has clean gain right up to 95 percent on the gain knob and everyone should be using plugins in obs to improve and louden the audio anyway using obs built in (compressor, limiter, downward expander to eliminate the noise floor Ect.) This idea you can't boost the audio for live streaming simply is not true.

  • @Stampede_G

    @Stampede_G

    Жыл бұрын

    I'd say most 200 dollar interfaces can handle the gain without an in-line preamp. I use a Motu M2 for recording when not using the GoXLR and it does the job just fine.

    @@Stampede_G yeah especially in this day and age. I actually have a cloudlifter as well and decided not to use it, the noise floor was actually less on this Interface than with it with correct gain levels. @@via_negativa6183 haha sounds like we're one and the same. Since I already bought the SM7B and the Cloudlifter, figured I may as well use them. My chain is SM7B -> Cloudlifter -> GoXLR for streaming, swap the GoXLR for the dbx 286s and M2 for just recording. GoXLR is plugged into a Furman power conditioner to avoid EMI/RFI noise. Can we please stop with this "SM7B needs a Cloudlifer" nonsense? It does not. It never has. I've used a SM7B for years with all kinds of entry level interfaces (Behringer, TC Electronic, M-Audio, Audient, Presonus) and I've never had a problem getting a usable signal out of it. Use the gain knob on your preamp. It's there for a reason.

  • @Stampede_G

    @Stampede_G

    Жыл бұрын

    You're not wrong. Pretty much any entry level interface with Midas preamps (UMC22 being the cheapest I know of) can give it plenty of gain to get to healthy levels. I bought the SM7B, Cloudlifter and Scarlett solo at the same time a few years ago, so I figured I may as well continue using the Cloudlifter with the GoXLR. The GoXLR has a few odd software-related issues, namely the one that causes it to exhibit hissing in the headphone output/mic monitoring that doesn't exist in the final recording, but is certainly audible when you use the zero latency monitoring at any decent volume, and this might be the reason why people still use the Cloudlifter with it. It also has an issue with the SM7B that causes it to peak at anything higher than around 48db of gain, so it's recommended to use much lower gain than Shure recommends (60db is what their official documentation lists, but that's too high in every circumstance and leaves no headroom to prevent clipping.) and to use the compressor's make-up gain to compensate for the rest. It's definitely starting to show it's age and I'm curious to see what device replaces it in terms of being so ubiquitous for live streaming. I've also used the SM7B with a Motu M2 and can get perfectly healthy levels out of it as well, no inline pre-amp required :)

    The world of virtual reality ( youtube, instagram etc...) is totally different than the real world.. the VR world is ruled by hype, follow-syndrome and subjectivities while the real world is ruled by pragmatism.. The sm57 && sm58 have always been used in the real world for all purposes from a presidential speech in the whitehouse to big concerts, studio cab micing to acoustic instruments amplification ( violins, cellos, upright bass, brass and woodwinds ).. The SM7B is a hype for the VR world...They(sm7b, sm57, sm58) all have the same sound and freq spectrum. I use a cheaper shure mic for live upright bass micing ( Shure sv100) and it sounds nearly as good as my premium ribbon mics for studio work. In sum, the law of diminishing returns is real
