This is true for pretty much every mirrorless camera. The first thing to do is to find that page and also make measurements. For example, the A1 does compressed raw in 30 fps burst mode at 14 bit ... but once you analyze the data, you realize it's only 13 bit.

Very interesting, thanks! I use RAW, burst & electronic shutter some times but not that often. Using a A6300.

I took me 1,5 sec to hit the like button. great intro Rusty. That said, if you want comedy (good one granted) you go to the large photo channel. But if you want to learn something for the gear we all can afford, Dave is the BEST source of info in the KZreadverse.

Interesting findings thanks, but glad to know that my shooting I’m always at 14-bit as shoot uncompressed, mechanical and don’t use bulb mode 👍

Interesting points here Dave. It's true, to get these added frame rates manufacturers have to make compromises to reduce the file size to increase buffer clearing. Granted, I wasn't aware that it was this bad across most of the recent cameras.

Great video! Don't see the A7IV on the Sony page (or the A1) - I wonder how the Lossless Compressed fits in?

I've also been running compressed RAW with continuous shooting on my A7R2. Definitely going to switch back to single shot and see what's its like. Thanks for information!

Burst mode bricks the shutter and some boofheads use burst mode when it's unnecessary. And that's how they ruin the camera. Whether it's Sony or Nikon it doesn't matter

The A7iv, A7Siii and A1 Lossless Compressed AF-C Burst mode is 14-bit, but obviously at a lower than advertised Max speed. I think I would take 14-bit 20fps vs 12 bit 30 fps, or 6fps vs 10, but that's just me. I will not be switching to Single shot save on a Tripod.

I'm surprised there's nothing in the metadata that tells you if it a particular image was shot in 12- or 14-bit RAW

I wonder if any photographer or client or anyone viewing a photograph that was taken with correct exposure could tell if it was 12 bit or 14 bit. I'm thinking the adjustments, composition and white balance and proper focus and high enough shutter speed to freeze motion and good subject or wing position will be much more important and noticeable while 12 bit to 14 bit will go unnoticed. Shooting birds and wildlife I think I'll get better pictures by not scaring them with the shutter sounds even at 12 bit. It's still good information to know for those that need it in their workflow. Since I shoot birds in flight and action I'm gonna keep it in burst mode but I think I'll be aware that I can drop it to single shot and get 14 bit if I need it. Thanks for the info!

Hi, for my Nikon d5300 I could not find limitation in quality when shooting burst or bulb raw 14 vs 12 (only compressed available), just the buffer capacity is different 'cause the images are greater in term of MB

Canon R5: 13 bit RAW files in H+ mode using mechanical or electronic first curtain shutter. Whereas the R6 gives you 14 bit.

Good to know, but I believe Nikon comes in from a different angle...user selected 14bit stays as do compression settings, but the burst fps reduces.

Still massively disappointed to learn that my long exposure bulb shots (dark sky astros usually) drop to 12bit but dark scenes are where we need the most low light latitude AND there is the least time pressure with long exposures to make rapid processing necessary.

  • @unspecialist

Actually you need latitude when you have very high highlights and shadows, you aren’t loosing anything in dark scenes.
