Why You're NOT Getting Hired as a Concept Artist

How do you get hired as a game concept artist? Trent Kaniuga is here to take the guesswork out of that question with this video. He goes through what you need to focus on when applying for the position and what to expect from the position if you get it. This is only a teaser for his new workshop that’s now available on Proko. If you don’t know anything about Trent, he has worked on some big projects in the gaming industry. His work can be found in popular games like Warcraft TBC + WOTLK, Diablo 3, League of Legends, Overwatch and more. If you’re interested in pursuing the same kind of career check out this workshop - www.proko.com/course/advanced...

ABOUT PROKO:
Instructional How to Draw videos for artists. My drawing lessons are approachable enough for beginners and detailed enough for advanced artists. My philosophy is to teach timeless concepts in an entertaining way. I believe that when you are having fun, you learn better. I take pride in producing high quality videos that you will enjoy watching and re-watching.
Course Description
Concept artists need to master speed and quality if they want to work for AAA game developers. If you’re an artist interested in reaching that level you’d have a hard time finding someone that teaches that kind of pipeline that goes into an ACTUAL production for game concept art, that was until I designed this workshop.
Since releasing this workshop, I've received several letters from artists who've just signed their first professional job because of the contents of what they learned from this video series! That's because it's designed to give you a realistic view of the concept art pipeline that I've done every day for over 17 years at studios like Capcom, Riot Games, Epic Games, Blizzard Entertainment and many others, to make effective assets that propel your career to the next level quickly. This is the same step by step process that I teach my team of artists at Aquatic Moon for all of the clients that we work with on environmental conceptual design. Learn more about the workshop here - www.proko.com/course/advanced...

That 1 day to do the concept is not true, usually you get a week to complete an environmental concept. At least that's the industry standard. What all KZreadrs don't speak about is amount of research that goes into concept art, you can't do viking village without researching how a viking village looks like, and that won't take less than a day, so you can't on top of that pump out an image with call outs. If you can do something in a day cool, but there won't be much of a design in there, just simple forms, can look good on a surface level if you are good/been doing it for 20 years, and that's fine if it fits the project, but that's also a skill, matching the project. Biggest thing with concept art is that you are not making a picture, you are assisting a product.

Trent's videos are all like this. He's selling a product (himself) and he's trying to give you the impression that he's got something you can't get anywhere else and that you need. That's basic marketing strategy and if you look at his videos, he's employing it rather blatantly and deliberately. The art space is crowded and he's exaggerating to create a sense of urgency (and also capitalize on the inexperience of the target niche.) Click on any of his videos and look at the description. The first five lines are all links to things he's selling. His content is a business.

So you're saying that Trent is lying? Seriously? No one in the industry ever gets a day to complete certain projects? They're all lying? Or maybe your experience is different and there are different demands and timelines in different industries at different companies, and that requirements are different based on your title and experience, or how much you're getting paid? Did any of that ever occur to you, or are you satisfied with just calling the guy a liar and moving on?

I came back to this video months after I first saw this. This is after I got hired at multiple studios as a concept artist. Not everything he says here is true. This whole thing is like a way to scare people into paying for his online courses. Sure you might have deadlines and timeframes that they have to finish certain tasks but it's not this "gun on your head" thing. Whichever team you're helping out at the moment will be moving at a certain speed and you will keep up with it because everyone can't proceed without each other's work. And at the end of the day studios want your best work, not your quickest work. They will make you crunch and work for hours longer sometimes. But they don't want you to waste their time with 20 different designs of one thing when you can put your thought and idea into something and create something unique. But one thing he says I can agree with is that you shouldn't slack off, when you work, do it sincerely. I just wanted to put this out there for people who might be seeing this video and feeling disheartened. Ignore this guy.

I work in the industrial design field, previously in products and now in exhibit & environment design for a total of 8yrs. In my spare time I work on digital illustrations and It's just now occurring to me I can mesh my two strengths together, not keep them seperate. In your opinion how easy is it to switch to this industry when I already have years of experience designing and working with art directors etc. on timeline, multi-stage progressive design development? My portfolio only consists of either 3d models, technical shaded hand sketching with callouts etc, & my personal detailed illustration (digital). I feel like this industry would be perfect as I'm already scouting a new path due to lack of interest in designing immersive experiences for the latest boxed water and the industry is sinking fast since Cvvd (for example). I guess my biggest challenge is collecting what I already have and building a new portfolio around a handful of existing pieces that gear toward this industry & creating a handful of concept art. Would you (or anyone else reading this comment) know of any good examples of what kinds of portfolios are shopped around to potential clients (freelance) or jobs (hired on)? How much process should be shown? I'm guessing the pipeline is very similar to the agency environments I'm used to in 3D cad design / product dev as far as stages. I know I have the skills for this work, but I'm not sure how to combine my two passions into one cohesive beast without creating a monster.

Also, given by his own description, he's just a junior, who the hell is he to say Trent is lying and to ignore him? What a weird loser lol

I'm not really sure what to make of this video. I get that it's mainly supposed to be a teaser advertising the new course on the website, but... Is this really going to inspire anyone to even try and become a concept artist? It essentially boils down to a series of downsides or hardships that feel more like a patronizing way to tell the audience "it's a really really tough and demanding job in the industry" and "you're not prepared" rather than an actual peek into Trent's workflow. I'm sure the course is interesting, but I don't think anyone wants to keep being told how hard and selective a job is without being told much else about what is being shown on screen. It's especially grating to hear instructors assume the people following the course are lacking in skill. Again, I don't know how it is in the actual course. This video just had that kind of "vibe".

That’s not enough. That’s just like being an old school art student. Know first what kind of concept artist/designer you want to be. There are two roads to choose. Or, actually. If you’ve acquired enough “set of skills”. You can choose both. Fantasy or sci-fi. In either both, you are required to know their design aesthetics. In short. You need to be a design nerd. Sharpen your eye when next time you a watch sci-fi or fantasy movies. And that’s just a simplified explanation.

I knew that you had less than a day to get a concept art piece done, but wow. I'm nowhere near that fast and don't even think I know what I want to be now. And the drawing stuff that I think I'm good at are things that nobody needs like lineart.

Don’t give up on your dream just because somebody else TOLD you it would be hard. Learn that for yourself. FAIL. Absorb new information. Improve from your mistakes. Be yourself. And keep in mind, this guy is trying to sell you some shit. Whenever a person says, “You don’t have what it takes, but I do, and I’m willing to sell you my secret.” They are breaking you down so that they can make money off of you. And I’m sure he is right, the work will be difficult, there is more to it than just drawing and you shouldn’t come in unprepared. There will always be challenges. DO NOT give up on your dream.

I work mostly in lineart and someone hired me to do a very complex comic and I created a ton of concept art with lineart and a little watercolour. The main concept artists of the Lord of the Rings movies work mostly in pencil, with some paintings for colour and to flesh things out. This guy even outlines all the stuff studios need from artists without mentioning digital painting: multiple component parts, modular design, research skills and an ability to deliver to the brief. And you can learn to draw fast! Especially for projects. Don’t give up, if you really love doing something you’ll find your own way to do it!

Coming out of Comics, I'm not surprised at all that you are expected to do this in a day. A very tall order but if you are just doing concept art it is not an unreasonable ask. I would have guessed three days to a week but a day is definitely tight but not impossible. But then again that depends on how many kickbacks you are getting from the Art Director. I'd be curious if there are style guides or suggestions given to the concept designer from the outset or if the concept artist is in fact working from scratch with no guides.

If the IP has been established like WOW, the concept artist will get style guides and when creating a new IP you work from scratch with the team and develop the style for the product. Atleast that`s what I`ve heard from Trent and others.

This guy gets it. Lots of people here dont understand and thus getting mad that the man has a course that teaches you exactly what you clearly dont understand. But chalk it up to "the job cant be THAT demanding? He must be lying" Its not about it being demanding, its about understanding the pipeline and the process, so you can be a valuable team member. He just decided to put that info in a course.

it's so weird to hear ppl say Trent is lying or trying to scare ppl into buying his course. He literally runs his own concept studio, hiring artists, worked with the biggest studios in the world. Sure, what he says might not apply to everyone but you're listening to a veteran of the industry. If you look around there are NOT a whole lot of veterans in games because they get chewed out. Listen to many, but failure will teach more than anything else.

Trent's the pinnacle of a workhorse production artist, and the general lazy artist hates that. They have fantasies of landing a big cushy job at a famous studio without putting the work in.
