Why You're Coming Over The Top In Your Golf Swing + How To Fix It!

How To Fix Your Slice In 15 Shots:
Are you coming over the top in your golf swing? Here's how to fix it!
Coming over the top in your golf swing simply means not following the correct club path on your downswing... Instead of swinging down and delivering the club from the inside, your club falls outside of your swing plane, and you end up losing power and/or hitting a nasty slice.
The main reason you're coming over the top is due to over-use of your body, and the sequence of motion in your swing is off.
The first step to fixing this is taking a look at the initial move away from the ball...
In the video you'll see a simple way to insure that your initial move away gets you into position for an on-plane swing that avoids the over the top move.
Next, we'll take a look at your downswing and how to use your arms in your swing and get your club to fall down on plane so you can hit more solid shots with better accuracy, more distance.

Haven't been able to hit my driver since my brain surgery in 2018. Watched this video last night and hit about 20 out of 30 balls at the range straight as an arrow! You sir are the man! Earned a follower.
I've spent a lot of time watching KZread golf videos and can truthfully say that this clip by Jim Roy is one of the best I've come across. I've been struggling with "coming over the top", and Jim's instruction about "quieting the body" and "giving room for the arms to swing" was a real eye-opener to me. Where many noted golf instructors are saying that you need to "fire the lower body first" and "move the hips", this instruction says to "quiet" the body and let the arms swing freely from the inside. I tried it, and it works! I'm now following all of Jim's KZread videos, and I have found him to be a terrific teacher of the golf swing. Also, check out his instructional video on posture. It's a great one, too!

I agree. I’ve heard a lot of firing the lower body first, I’ve never heard of “quieting” to help with this. Will try soon
I've struggled with this for months. Unfortunately my instructor couldn't relay the same info you just did in your video. One day while at the range, I tried something new, which was allowing my wrists to move instead of my arms just being an extension of the club. As soon as you said "too much tension in your arms" I immediately related. Great videos!
"Now remember, you've got to exaggerate it just to change a little in this crazy game". That is my Quote of the year!

Great video. If watched all your over the top videos and they are bril6to watch and very easy to understand. Thank you
The up-the-hill thing is game-changing. Thank you, sir.
Very effective, thanks for the lesson!
Great tips. Thank you!
A local pro in Atlanta taught me the exact the same things Jim mentioned. A lot people told me to forget about it. I think I’m gonna go back and work on these two drills. Since everyone else isn’t helping me with my over the top/ steep downswing lol. His method makes a lot of sense
I just found your video on over the top ,it's going to be a great help for me and I'm very impressed with how you explain things, looking for more of your video's. Thanks again GC
That right foot back drill is the greatest thing I have ever tried. Literally stopped coming over the top and hitting draws within one bag of balls. Thank you so much.

Try the head cover/towel under back armpit drill. Much better because it actually teaches you how to swing on balance. Also it wont mess up your aim like this back foot drill.

@@jacobsommers6952 that drill isnt bad but aim was not the focus. Once I got a feel for my drill, the whole point is to set up square and have the in to out path feel incorporated. I have even been using that as part of my pre-shot routine with great success.
That is exactly my faulty down movement. Well explained! Thank you. Thank you.
Can I tell you that the right foot drill has really helped my driver shots. I dont always get a draw but the ball goes almost straight now and of course more distance. Thank you very much. James (Scotland )
At 0:51, you nailed what I do. I've always (but been unaware of) started the downswing with my upper body, causing my club to be steep, hands out away from the body, and an outside in swing path. You're video helped me discover this. I went to the range to fix this - it's definitely awkward because the right way is new, but man did I ever get a hold of a few with a seemingly effortless swing because it was my hips that were dragging my upper body through to contact. I went from 240 yd slices to hitting the range net about 80ft up the net at the 245 marker! Thanks for the video. Very much appreciated.
This is the Best lesson on OTP that I have seen. Great job. Thanks.

this is hands down the best piece of golf advice i have every received thank you so much
This is a very good video! I like the split screen with two different camera angles. This type of "over the top" kinda swing is my biggest issue for my driver.
Thanks Jim for the video instruction. With the drills you suggested, I now know what the swing should feel like.
This is top level stuff, thanks
you have showed me what ive been doing, this helped tremendously to understand my over the top move, thanks.
Clear, brief and easy - KISS keep it short and simple.
Superb video. Thanks so much for these tips. Especially coming way to inside on backswing.
Last round was pulling everything left. Turned a light bulb on for me!! Thank you!
Great video - have been struggling with over the top, the “stagger foot” drill helped fix that plus it reinforced shoulder/hip turn and foot weight shift - have incorporated the drill into my pre-shot routine. Thanks!!
Good job Jim ... excellent solutions and very informative ...
first time I've heard too far inside to start and wow it solved it all for me. I was pretty close to figuring it out and this pushed me over the edge. THANK YOU
Great drills and swing thoughts. Thanks for posting.
I am constantly fighting(!!!) coming over the top and when I’m off I think about this video and these 3 drills. Thanks so much for putting this out there! -Former CNY’er
Fantastic video! Thank you so much!
Thank you!!!!! Can’t wait for the range 🐐
Great drills well presented. Thanks
Now that's one of the best videos yet. Thanks you.
Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to going to the range!
Great video! I will be implementing these drills into my practice routine! As soon as the snow melts!

How’d it go?
By God, it WORKED!!! Thank you.
Exactly what I've been trying to get right, this tip is "100", on my way to the driving range, thank's so much for your help...
This is great thank you. I struggle with this. One way I know I am coming over too much on a drive is when I burry the ball and it hits about 5 inches in front of the tee and bounces up. That is a sure sign to me that I came over on the down swing
Same drill my golf coach gave me, the right foot even with left heel. However, I like that you added the other one about pausing at the top and starting with the arms. My coach didn't inform me of that and I did suspect that the first move on my down swing was causing the over the top swing. Your video confirms it - thanks.

Very informative. Thank you.
Thanks gonna give this a try. Appreciate the help
Amazing video I never leave a comment but this video deserves one! Nothing worse then trying to fix something you dont understand. This video showed me what I was doing wrong! Drills on on point as well.
simple but great drills... thank you
You just changed my life. Got out of bed at 130 am to work on this. Already can tell my path is where it needs to be! I get my body into too soon , x baseball player.
Yep, I have seen you next to tiger woods on Sunday!! Great success.
wow, this actually worked. I was almost ready to quit. watched this yesterday, went to the range, did both drills and never hit a bad shot. unreal. thank you.

@@chadwilliams3468 yes, Chad, I put my left foot forward and it was almost in line with my right foot behind. just a little right of my left so I had some balance. it worked like a charm. hit everything straight. you have to do it enough to get the "feel" of using arms more but it worked. good luck!!! I had the same issue as you.
great voice clear and understanding
Best teacher!!!
I really do enjoy these Videos Jim?
Boy I struggle with swinging over the top. I'm anxious to try these out. Thanks.
What an awesome drill...my husband has struggled with this for years...not any more thanks to this simple effective drill
Great drill tried it last night the split stance worked for me
I actually tried this. The 1st drill. What i discovered was that I folded the right arm correctly that made me swing more from the inside. A throwing action. I put down small exit mirror on the ground and balls in front the mirror so I watch myself swing from the above. It really helped me with sensation and feelings. Thanks for the tips! Great help.
Great advice. Thanks
Good lesson. Thanks
Looks good, going to try it today at the practice range
Great advice thank you
very good video with useful tips
You hit the nail on the head. Awesome
Thanks Jim!! Your videos are very informative and helpful in correcting bad tendencies of which I have MANY!! Kudos!! Hi from the Loeber’s in Jersey✌️ I’ll be golfing w U Franny and U Fred soon sharing some of these tips bc I’m pretty sure they aren’t watching KZread. 😂 😊✌️🏌️⛳️

Winner of a video, I have been researching "golf improvement tools" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Graysonyon Putter Prolific - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my co-worker got excellent success with it.
Excellent video
thank you . Best drill

Cant wait to go home and try the right foot back trick. I am constantly standing up and this should help me with my weight distribution.
A shame I can't like this more than once. Amazing drills for what currently ails me.
Great tips!
Many thanks!
Thx, great stuff!
Pure gold.
Thanks for the lesson I'm hitting it much more consistent now ,and I've got a baby draw going as appose to a push fade/slice I've hammerd it since just after Christmas most days at the range ..I'm going to play my first comp in the new year tomorrow at my club and I feel optimistic about it ....Thanks a bunch :)

This is my problem. Thanks for the drills.
i've been golfing a long time and from observing myself and others it seems almost instinctive for most people to swing out to in. so some times for me i'll allow for it and line up a little left and open the face a bit and it seems to work with a bit of fade but you have to watch out for the pull. it's a faily powerful shot but shoots up high.
Love your video thanks
I really like this video I do struggle with this.

This is awesome
Anyone else keep noticing the random golf balls in front of him for no reason?!? Haha Awesome video Jim. I went drom a 20 to a 7 handicap in one year by building a sim and intense practice; however my natural swing is over the top.. I spent 6 hrs yesterday on my sim trying to fix my over the top swing. It wasn't until I gave up, wanted to snap every club in my bag 5-hrs later, that I came across this video. I finally felt like what it's supposed to feel like to swing without effort and sort of look like a pro on my replay cameras. Now how to engrave this will be the challenge. Is it common to "fat" shots often when you change to this swing at first? I hope so.
Very good lesson. Good voice.

I'm a left handed golfer & left handed hitter in baseball. I went to the range & tried some of this & was pleasantly surprised it worked! the only reason I say "surprised" is because it felt soooo weird. I had to tell my baseball brain to swing to hit the ball to left-center field & once i did that, i started hitting square in the clubface 9 out of 10 times. Thanks for the video PGZ guy!
