Van Cleef & Arpels is a brand-favorite not just among royalty and high society but also among modern celebrities and influencers. With only a 50-year history, they're a relatively young company but despite that, they've achieved a tremendous amount. Van Cleef is so highly regarded that back in 1967, they were asked to create a crown for the coronation of Empress Farah Pahlavi of Iran.
What made this ALL THE MORE remarkable (and so important to execute beautifully) was that historically, wives of Persian monarchs never had the privilege of being crowned. At least, not since the Muslim conquest of Iran, which dates back to 633. We're talking about a 1,334 year difference. This was a big moment in woman's rights history that followed in the footsteps of policies set forth by the White Revolution, which called for further emancipation of Iranian women. Mohammad Reza Shah was adamant about making a symbolic gesture by crowning his consort.

Traditionally, crowns in Iran were made with stones already in the imperial treasury. Because it was illegal for such items to leave the country, Van Cleef had to send a team of jewelers to make the crown on location and it was a process that required six months to complete.
The crown of the former Empress was beautiful but even she had to admit, it was also a bit heavy, coming in close to 2 kg which equates to about 4 lbs, 7 oz. It contained not only close to 1,500 diamonds but it was also adorned with 34 rubies, 36 emeralds, 105 pearls and two spinels.

Van Cleef's biggest achievement in jewelry-making was their Mystery Set, also known as "Serti Mysterieux," a precious stone setting technique that they patented in 1933. This approach made it possible to set stones so realistically that absolutely no prongs or metal components would be visible (allowing for unbroken swatches of color). How many pieces of jewelry have you seen that can accomplish that? It's no wonder that their jewelry can be so expensive, when one considers the mind boggling amount of hours such a task requires.

The four leaf clover motif is an instantly recognizable symbol of the brand. In fact, all you have to do is type "clover jewelry brand" into Google and Van Cleef is the first to come up. Named the Alhambra collection and created in 1968, it was inspired by the scalloped archways of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain.

VCA is lovely but I’d pass on the more common pieces because they are so often duplicated. The problem is that the actual materials used are not that expensive on their own. So much of the cost is based on the brand premium rather than the actual intrinsic cost. I feel the same about the Cartier love bracelet. Too many fakes.

Malachite pendant was my first pice of VCA... love the green. I got 5 motifs Alhambra agate bracelet last Christmas. I have yellow gold vintage Alhambra earrings and a perlee pearls pinky ring that I had to wait for sizing about 6months. I love to get rare Rock Crystal Alhambra. Its on my wish list!

I've owned two pieces from the Alhambra collection, both with the gold and onyx stone. I wear the sweet alhambra earrings daily, but I wear them in my fourth hole to give a different look then where most people would wear (their first lobe hole). I love them.

I have a few pieces. My favorite is the cosmo rose gold between the finger ring with pave diamonds. My favorite Alhambra piece is the 50th anniversary 20 motif necklace with pave diamonds. VCA’s rose gold is so dreamy. The gray MOP blends perfectly with the rose gold. That’s why I love it so much.

I rather buy Australian Opals where they are natural gems that worth thousands of dollars. Arpels has so many replicas now you cant see it real or fake
I’ve got the Alhambra Vintage carnelian necklace single pendant and I’ve got the vintage blue agate bracelet which is very beautiful. I’ve used it as necklace and bracelet at the same time.
I have many pieces from sweet Alhambra/Vintage Alhambra collections all in either solid gold/rose gold and some with diamonds. I did not pick anything that come with stones!! They can chip, shrink and break in any circumstance if you’re not careful! Why on earth I want to spend the big sum of money on semi-precious stones/peals?? They aren’t precious gems like ruby, sapphire, emerald, diamonds. I still adore the design and the craftsmanship from VCA is impeccable with fine details. I hope one day I could add some watches to my collections, they are beautiful and feminine.

I have a blue Alhambra bracelet I think it’s lapis but I’m unsure as it was a gift from A trip to Paris because apparently that specific one can only be bought in their physical headquarters in Paris.

Just got my first piece I went for yellow gold mother of pearl five motif bracelet. I like it because it’s unique and I like that it looks cool and clean and fresh. I want a necklace too but I do nit know if I should buy the matching one to complete it or buy a white gold chalcedony one. What do you think I should do?

The matching necklace would be the best way to go because you can wear them as a set or individually. Just my opinion.

@@NicoleRespondsLB do a review of the lucky Alhambra with the various colorful motifs, that is over 15 K so I am saving for it but I have not seen any review online
For the price they are charging they can give us at least more than 18k carat gold . The materials used to create these are not expensive themselves sadly

Yeah but it's 18k so...close enough and usually in jewelry the highest is 22k to make it more durable. 24k is usually just used in gold bars
