Why You NEED This $20 'Bond' Watch I Casio AE1200 Review

The Casio AE1200WH and it's various different models, more commonly known as the "Casio Royale". An absolute banger of a watch for the price of lunch. Let's dive into the reasons why you need this "James Bond" watch.

Rugged watch, had mine for 10 years and it still works fine. The analog display is almost impossible to read as the hour and minute hands are hidden by the exact same size outer clock markings. I love the golden back light, and how light it is on the wrist. I got a question. Is the AE1200 sturdy enough to take a bit of beating? Not like a G-Shock of course (cos G's are built for abuse), but can the Royales take reasonable shaking? As in when running, playing table tennis (really quick repetitive hand movements for offensive shots), etc.

  • @danieltarullo1689

@@albussd The answer is YES, the watch is extremely rugged. I now own 3 different models of the watch. It can take a beating, and the battery seems to last forever. I turn the hourly beeper off if I am not going to wear it for awhile to save battery life. I still have the original one that I used when doing major renovation projects. It is all banged up but still works fine after ten + years of heavy use. The crystal face got really scratched up, so I simply removed the movement and put it in a new 1200 case. I keep the old case has a memento I like the 1200 better than the Seiko g757 bond watch. I have owned many of those and the the movements are not very rugged and the back lights are dim. The price of the 1200 is unbelievably low, I have heard that someone has created a 1200 with a Stainless steel CASE, that sells for $300. It uses the same 1200 movement that is in the existing models. Truly a great watch.

I have a G Shock for 16 years and part of the band's module on top finally gave out and fell off. I'm having a hard time trying to get a jeweler to fix it (apparently Casio is being uncooperative), and I need a watch, so this looked like a good one. Received it in the mail today, trying to get the 3 time zones working, then I will be set (I'm in New York but I do travel to London frequently, and how convenient is this time zone setting?). The G Shock I have is the best watch I've ever owned (I'm 68 years young) so I'm sentimental towards it and hope it can be repaired; for now, this Casio will serve the purpose.😃

By the way, the G Shock I bought cost me $39 at Costco in 2006, a screaming bargain, and is it ever accurate! That's why I'd hate to lose it, it calibrates with the atomic clock in Denver several times a day to stay close to perfect (take that, Rolex!). I have that time zone thing taken care of, once you get T-1 settled, then T-2, the other zones fall into place.

Digital watches are staging a comeback and Casio is the best manufacture of them bar none. The AE1200 is my daily driver and I get a lot of compliments and things like "oh, is that a Samsung watch?" LOL!! I gave it to someone and the first thing they did was start tapping the crystal, I said what are you doing? They wanted to see what apps it came with. I also got a "how long does it take to charge?" When I tell them it has a 10 year LiOn battery, they're amazed. I'm like this tech has been around for 40 years and is rock solid.

The Casio AE1200WH, also widely known as the Casio Royale, has a modding community that has embraced this inexpensive copy of a Seiko G757, which was worn by Roger Moore in the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy and turned it into a bit of a subculture of it's own. I have a AE1200WH-1A that I've easily taken apart, scrubbed almost ALL that janky-looking lettering off except for the Casio name with 91% Isopropyl alcohol and a Q-Tip, then filled the case with silicone oil before reassembly and I replaced the band with a really nice blue leather with tan twine stitching, Ritche watchband I paid $20 for on Amazon. It's so cool! I get a LOT of compliments on it and it's actually a much more interesting conversation piece because of what it is, than the same common Rolex you see all the time that needs no introduction.

I have a fair number of Casio watches. I bought a fair number of their expensive G-Shock series in the $300 to $900 range. All were super deluxe quality watches. These are mostly solar with radio control time set. I found average accuracy for these watches to be in the range of 3 to 8 seconds per month which is very acceptable. I have some fairly expensive Swiss mechanical manual windup, and automatic mechanical watches. These keep about 3 to 8 seconds per day average depending on my type of activities. These watches have to be maintained about every 4 to 5 years to keep them working properly. Over the years I came to the conclusion that having expensive watches is a nice type of hobby, but for actually telling accurate time for normal use and living a basic electronic watch is the best value. If you get a watch for under $100 as like most any Casio or Timex these are best value. If you damage the watch you simply toss it out and get a new one. In today's world most everyone has a smart phone. This will give the most accurate time possible because it is on the telephone network.

If only Casio would still make them in metal cases.. like they used to in the 80's. I would love my "Royale" in anodized Aluminum. I know about the stainless steel custom case from kraniodesign, but for the time being I find it a bit bulkier in design (probably a technological manufacturing limitation) and too heavy. The watch for my taste is big as it is, being also substantially heavier would go just over my threshold. An aluminum version with a proper crystal (I don't even care if it's mineral or sapphire) would be perfect.

Should they remake the older 80's models or even the newer ones but just in metal instead of plastic/resin, such that you couldn't tell the difference at a glance between the original models and the remakes, then I would very much buy a couple of interesting ones that you simply cannot find nowadays in decent condition or you have them, but in resin/plastic..

@@WatchTWM No. Says "Made in China" on the back. Or you mean that the Royale is normally made in Japan? I watched some videos about discovering fake Casios in general/F-91W, and it seems OK when I press the three buttons to activate all the digit areas on the display. Can't get the "CASIo"-text though, if I press lower right button and hold. Don't know if that only applies to the F-91W...

the Casio AE1200 was based on the Seiko 757 watch which was worn by Roger Moore in the movie Octopussy- Casio designed it similar to the Seiko hoping that some horologist would call it a James Bond watch....and someone did and so it is an unofficial Bond watch that never was in a Bond movie....James would not demean himself and wear a Casio...but if he did, he'd have World Time and a ten year battery with 5 alarms and 4 time zones.....shaken not stirred.

Naw....I just bought one and am sending it right back. The month and day digits are so small as to be almost invisible, the little round "clock" is redundant and almost too tiny to make sense. The worst feature is the illumination. It is not a glowing background like the Timex indiglo, but two lights that wash out the digits when used in the dark and make the time almost impossible to see. I guess the World Time feature might be useful for some, but in my opinion this watch is too much gimmick and not enough actual watch.

@@WatchTWM The video where you never mention the Seiko, or the real reason this watch got it's nickname? I did, and left a comment saying you don't know what you're talking about. a long time ago in the 1960's another studio, Colombia pictures, not MGM made a bond movie, called "casino royale" a lot like how Casio copied Seiko, like, Colombia pictures is Casio, and MGM is Seiko, to top it all off, the Seiko was worn by bond a couple times.
