BRO... I practiced the Sweet Child O' Mine end solo for 4 hours straight. I nail it. EVERYTIME I practiced the Bohemian Rhapsody solo for 2 hours straight. I nail it. EVERYTIME I practiced Black Dog for 1 hour straight. I nail it. EVERYTIME But that doesn't mean anything. No matter how much time you spend on a solo, or song, or anything... The Determination and Devotion matter. If you've been practicing something for 4 days and can't get it? KEEP GOING. you can, in fact, Do it. Just try harder. You'll get it. Keep going soldier.

Once you've learnt it though, instead of playing it note perfect, try injecting some of your own ideas to put your own performance and personality into it.
So this happens a lot: 1. I discover new skill 2. Practice new skill 3. Perfect the new skill 4. Practice new skill to maintain skill 5. Miss one day of practice 6. Can’t play said skill 7. Jimi Hendrix burn the shit out of my guitar

I got it months ago when it was on offer. Admittedly, I haven't stuck to it (had other priorities, haven't been able to play guitar as much as I'd like in general), but from what I did get through there's some really good stuff there. It can be a bit difficult to keep interest at times though, because you just want to smash through each lesson one after the other when in reality, you're supposed to slow down and practice each concept for a while after each lesson.

Was I seriously just baited into watching an ad for guitar super system
THAT’s how you make a god damn advertisement. Signed up for it, and I’m really excited to start practicing. These exercises are exactly what I’ve needed to learn how to actually play guitar. Like really play the fuckin guitar. Not just learning a few songs. Knowing what tf you’re doing. I’ve always wanted to improv or compose my own music. This is a giant step towards that direction. Thank you for making this.
Thank you so much for this video!! I really needed this reminder. Plus some other helpful tips! In my college music program it feels like I need to practice something 24/7 until I can do it in my sleep, but I appreciate the fresh perspective!
I'm really really thankful Tyler ❤️, thanks for making this inspirational content, it's 3:12 in India and I was practicing for my Rock School exam and I opened KZread for a break and found this video and because of this I'm inspired and going back to practice. Thank you once again ! 🥰
Watching your videos helps me stay motivated to practice. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Much obliged, Tyler! You are correct in that don't stick to one technique to long. I've been trying to sweep pick for 10 years now & still not sick of it, though....Hope the 50-state trek across country is going well! Happy new year to you & the Mrs!
Thanks for the advice. Happy New Year !!

Awesome and very helpful video!
Great video! That one-armed push-up was epic
Exactly what i was looking for. Thanks man
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I recently started playing bass in December. I went from not understanding or even seeing what anyone was doing in a fret board to actually seeing your picking and fretting in time with the music. Since I do have some experience reading music a little bit mainly for percussion...I’ve been trying to learn the notes on the fretboard and have been practicing minor scales and exercises I have found on the KZreads. I wish that the guitar bug bit me earlier in life but better late than never lol. I’m 27 and I think I found my summer quarantine project
I would honestly LOVE to use Guitar Super System but I just don't have the money, and all those ads that say you can't learn from KZread videos are false because that's exactly how I learned over the past 6 years and how I will keep learning!
Thanks, great content, very helpful.
I've never really stuck to a practice routine as such but I do practice. I just practice whatever I feel like practicing at the time. I have had times where I have ran up and down all the different arpeggios in different keys for 2 hours and then move onto sweep picking etc. It's probably not the most efficient way to do it but it works for me. The biggest thing I find is, you really need to enjoy the journey. It makes focused practicing seem like less of a chore. And I always end my practice sessions with a few little jams to have a bit of fun and put what I have been practicing into practice.
Such an inspiring words from you! Thanks a lot :)
Happy New Year Dude!!!
Happy New Year !!!!
Man this video is so on time man I Appreciate!!!!!!!!
you are a wise man. thank you.
This channel really makes me an overall better guitarist and to that I say thank you sir.
Practice is great, but to really grow as a musician you need to have your knowledge and skills challenged by other musicians. There's so much more to being a musician than actually playing the guitar. I played in bands for years but I never learned so much, so fast than I did in my first year or two as a session musician. I've met a lot, I mean a LOT, of very skilled and knowledgeable guitar players who absolutely struggled when playing with other musicians. They could play every scale and mode, every chord shape, every inversion, and yet somehow could not "gel" with other musicians. They just couldn't keep up with anything even a little bit outside of their element. Those same people lacked practical skills like dead batteries in pedals, not bringing cables, forgetting their guitar stands, didn't bring an amp, didn't bring a tuner, playing too loud, constantly breaking strings, noodling during breaks ... but I guess that's a separate topic.
@mogwix
5 жыл бұрын
I will also go on to say that some of the best and most successful musicians I've worked with could barely tell you what key the song is in. They actually challenged me the most, because you really need to pay attention to their approach and how they respond. You really get to know how some people hear music, and absorb that into your own playing. A practiced musician does not make an experienced musician.

kordm then wtf am I supposed to do?? I’ve always thought that learning all of that would make it easier to improv. Do they have perfect pitch? How did THEY learn to play like that? Because that’s what I want to become. I want my entire soul to be a catalyst for music so it can write itself. I want it to help me discover myself and express what I discover to everyone else. But now I’m being told that learning what I thought would be the perfect tools to make it happen is all futile.
This is a vitality important video. I needed this years ago.

I need to make 2019 the year I take all of these musical tools I’ve acquired throughout my life and focus on structuring them. I can play well already and I can write riffs for days, but I’ve never been a “soloist”. I’ve got speed and accuracy, but I’m always just all over the place. I need focus and I need direction. I may give your learning system a try here real soon.
In terms of goals in 2018 I set out to learn sweep picking I practiced I wouldn't say diligently but I practiced and I'm walking into 2019 being able to sweep pick to a degree I feel confident I will get the technique down in 2019. However the sweep picking has transitioned into my everyday guitar picking I believe this is referred to economy picking where is it a specific up or down stroke what kind of a push through the strings and this was a result of learning how to sweep pick. I also used modern rock guitar techniques ;D
All the best to you sir
Been subbed for almost 2 years and finally signed up for guitar supersystem! Wish we could have a one-time payment option tho.
Happy New Year Tyler! You've been my inspiration. I buy the same pick you're using, the green one (Dunlop .98) Hoping that I'll reach your guitar playing level! Hahahaha! God bless you bro.

Well mission accomplished. I went to my storage locker and got my old guitar and keyboard out because iv been watching your videos. magic(music) is real(win)
thx for the lesson :D
All true and i need my practice routine very soon! Hope to do well in 2019 ;)
Its true. I also practiced in segments, everyday. Still do, everyday! And also give 10 to 15 mins in the end everyday for just random improv, or shredding, or improving over a backing track!
A good practice routine I use is “ Chop Builder” by Frank Gambale it can be downloaded for $15 on the Alfreds music website. If you can get past the 80’s cheesiness the routine basically takes you through everything in Guitar Supersystem 1,2,&3 oh did mention it is $15.99 with no monthly subscription
This is very motivational ❤❤❤

I'm not gonna lie, I've been playing guitar for just over two years now and I'm able to do things I've never imagined I could do in the short time I've been playing. The way I got good though isn't because of how much I've practiced because I don't really have a routine, I just play all the time and for long periods of time. The only two things I've been actually having to sit down and practice are sweep picking and economy picking. Other than that I've learned so much and progressed so far in a short period of time just through my love of playing the guitar. Maybe it's just me but I think some people don't have to have a routine to get better, it's just a good organized way to get better.
i play guitar for more than four hours a day but i don't have a practice routine, i just play guitar and learn new things when i want to and it works very well. 3 months ago when i wasn't liking guitar the only song i knew was day tripper. and now i can play the crazy train solo perfectly but i still don't have a practice routine
All my free time is put towards guitar cause its just so much fun!
So. I'd like an advice that fits my situation better, cause I'm pretty sick of the same stuff you recommend, since only part of it really applies to my skill level. How should I set my practice routine, considering I have to exclude a) solos b) techniques other than legato c) songwriting because my level is still basic and I should focus on the following things first: a) rhythm a.k.a. acquiring fluency with the right hand b) legato, a.k.a. having full control over it and minimising movements c) timing, a.k.a. knowing how to stick, like series of 5 notes in a 4/4 time signature (I'm used to practise with a metronome but in certain situations I can't figure out the right pace in order to stick to the metronome) ? Thanks.
lmao.. I freaking love this channel

Btw when Eric Clapton got asked what is it like to be the best guitarist in the world, the ask Prince response was awesome. Keep up the good work.
You poor bastard if you actually read through all those guitarists. I read probably the first 200 but when 50 repeats happened in that time and people posted guitarists that were in your list. I actually cried for you man that must've been fucking brutal. Had to get off that page. Bret Garsed and Stuart Fraser are under rated. Dai Pritchard is sadly unknown outside of Europe but is fucking amazing. Orianthi and DJ Ashba. I scrolled so far so I didn't repeat and then read so many repeats. Feel so sorry for you man. I hope someone gave you a hug after that one. If they didn't here is a virtual hug cos you deserve it. Tyler you are a legend if you made it.

I’m 51 and tinkerer with guitar when I was in high school, but never really kept it up. I just recently purchased a new electric guitar and have decided to take lessons to learn this time, but I’m worried that with my age, I’ll never reach my goals of being able to play bluesy riffs and licks. Am I too old?
Speaking of practice. I have been trying to learn Guitars and Cadillacs so I can play it for my father, it was the first song I heard him play. Would there be anyway you could help with a lesson on that song. Everything out there for the song I feel like is off a little.
I practice four hours on the week days and 30 minutes or hour on the weekends but when I'm doing my 4 hours I usually take a ten minute break go use the bathroom or get a drink or clean alittle
Happy New Year 2019!!! Everyone..
I find it better to set up goals... write a song, write a solo, record something... vs straight up a practice routine. Thoughts??
This pretty much the truth about guitar playing. It's all fun and games at first but eventually you want to get better but those fun noodle sessions are keeping you from getting better, and you feel like crap for sucking. I almost quit completely because I was stuck at power chords, couldn't play a song or a scale, and I would not stop noodling. As soon as I committed to practicing everyday and doing something difficult, and stuck with it no matter how boring or hard it got, my playing kept going up exponentially. You gotta put in the work and bust your ass daily before you can show off and have fun, your self esteem goes up like crazy as well making it easier to perform for others.

I love practicing but all I want is to do is play songs that I want to play. I dont care so much about songwriting or improvisation. So if I want to get better at alternate picking, I won't sit for 30 mins just playing random alternate picking licks. I'll fins a song that I want to play which has a lot of alternate picking. What I mean is I dont have a routine, I just kinda do what I want and try to learn new songs as much as possible. Is this a bad method or do I still need a routine?
