Why You Don't Actually Enjoy Playing Fallout

Ойындар

The release of the Fallout TV show has highlighted that we might not actually love playing Fallout games for the reasons we think. Do we really enjoy playing Fallout, or do we enjoy the world and lore that Bethesda has created?

Can you separate the games from the lore? The games and the stories they tell are one and the same. Bit of a weird take. Fallout 76's launch is proof that people won't love anything just because it is set in the fallout universe.

I don't often comment on videos, but for this I feel like I must. I first played Fallout 3 way back when it first came out (Hell I got a friend at a store to break street date for me to play 2 weeks early) and I loved every second of it, because the game allowed me to explore a world that was so very different from every other open setting that came before it. I spent almost 90 hours playing before I even cleared the main story, because I wanted to explore every part of the map. It wasn't the existing lore that kept me invested, it was the world I was actively participating in at the present. That is the thing with the fallout games that you missed here, there is a freedom to make the adventure what you want it to be. Your biggest hang up with Fallout 4 is having to save Preston and build settlements, but that is what you chose to do, you decided to follow the story and the road that the game wanted you to take, when you could have easily just gone the other way and made your own choices. If you are so rigid in your approach to a game or experience, you wont ever find the true depth that it has to offer and all of the secrets that it holds. This is getting longwinded, so I will wrap it up. I love playing Fallout games (I have put over 2000 hours into the series as a whole) and I enjoy them more than the TV show. I find your argument flawed because you are so hung up on the railroad that you chose to take, as well as the comparisons with non fallout games and the modern "bathesda stink". Just because you are finding Fallout 4, Fallout 76 and Starfield boring, doesnt mean they aren't enjoyed by others.

Fallout 1, 2, 3, 4 and New Vegas are good. I never played 76 and don't care if I ever do. I've never watched the show, but I heard it was good. The games are great but would be better if I wasn't hauling and selling loot 60% of the time. The updates to 4 they just released actually made it a little better. I've noticed more enemy encounters. I didn't think about the show causing Fallout 5 to release early I hope that doesn't happen. That was a nice well put together video. Maybe you enjoy the show more because you experience Fallout without all of the tedious mind-numbing parts of the gameplay.

My biggest complaint with Fallout 4 is something you touched on in the video- settlement mode and the guilt you have for not using it. Unless you spend countless hours fortifying at least Sanctuary and the Castle into intricate bases you really feel like you're gyping yourself out of the game's content. But it works the same way too, if you have high self standards you could spend days if not weeks of real time building these settlements to your standards all the while dealing with the janky object placement and 1st person camera being the worst way to do construction when it should be a form of free camera. For a personal example I've spent the better half of May now building up Sanctuary with a ridiculous amount of detail all the while I miss just being out in the wasteland shooting creatures, doing quests, and getting rich like in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Settlement mode simply put is something I wish they never added to the game... it's both addictive and terrible.

I play New Vegas to this day with mods to make it feel like a current game, I don't even remember when I last played Fallout 3, Fallout 4 I am unable to play without the mod Sim Settlements 2 to get rid of the stupid settlement micro-managing and the TV show for me was hit and miss. There's never going to be a Fallout 5 because Bethesda are lazy and will just push to keep 76 alive via life-support because making stuff good is too hard.

Flawed thesis built on assumptions. I love the lore and the medium of gaming is a wonderful way to explore that. Hence, I love 1, 2, and NV because the writers knew what they were doing and the world and stories are great. 3 and 4 are Bethesda slop that misunderstand the world, and are bad games for it. The show is similar; the worldbuilding is really bad, honestly (see Shady Sands, the lack of the Boneyard when the show is set in LA, the zero notable locations from 1 and 2, etc), but the characterization is great so I still enjoyed it. There’s more to a show than just the worldbuilding and there’s more to games than just worldbuilding, and on top of this half of Fallout doesn’t understand what Fallout is supposed to be, a fact which you completely neglect. (Yes I am a New Vegas fanboy how could you tell)
