    I know it says check blindspot before merging in the banner headline of this clip, but I'm not familiar with the western suburbs where Rockbank is at. Is that part of the freeway where the accident happened a merge area, or was it technically a shitty lane change by the SUV?

    Peter Smulders The person indicated for quite a long time before actually pulling over, all the sedan needed to do was apply the brakes, unfortunately it’s a simple case of “I’m in the right I shouldn’t have to slow down” in fact, you can see it tried to accelerate away just before collision. In general unless you’ve got a supercar, your car will stop faster than it will accelerate especially at high speed.

    Nope if you watch closely they started accelerating before the car started merging. There's no merge signs and you can't see any indication of the road turning to a single lane, he's not a mind reader, so there is no expectation for him to be leaving a gap. This is actually a great example of defensive driving. You can argue about should've, could've, would've all you like after the fact. Sure, it wouldn't have happened if the left car was going a little slower, but by the same (and more reasonable) logic, this *shouldn't* have happened in the first place, if the merger was actually paying attention.

  • @Shagley87

    @Shagley87

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@martyn975 well I guess that's one way to look at it. I don't really agree to be honest, if you play the video at .25 speed you can clearly see the car on the left accelerated and didn't attempt to brake until after it veered off the road. They could clearly see the other car merging and chose not to brake when they were in the other cars blind spot and the driver had not seen them. I think there is responsibility on both sides of this accident. The left car didn't initiate they accident but they also didn't react appropriately. Also my understanding of defensive driving is to avoid accidents, a simple tap on the brake here would have been a better choice. Also you said there are no merge signs and they are not required to leave a gap? The car on the right is in the passing lane so the car on the left accelerating/passing the other vehicle is effectively undertaking which is illegal.

  • @martyn975

    @martyn975

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Shagley87 Where to begin. First of all I encourage looking up the coordinates so you can see what kind of road this is. It's a 2 lane highway with no exits immediately near the crash. This wasn't even an "I'm about to miss my exit" type merge. This is simply a driver with zero awareness. Saying the red car should of just slammed on his brakes is redundant. High speed + heavy braking = loss of control. We have no idea how close the cars behind him were, or what the driver was assuming at the time. I've had similar instances where someone was about to merge into me, heard my horn, and swerved back before they hit me. It's not unreasonable for them to assume the same thing. Undertaking is not illegal. In fact, in both the current road safety act, and the Vicroads road rules, there is no mention of that phrase in any context other than undertaking a breathalyzer test. So you're completely wrong there. The speed limit is 100. You can clearly see the merging car doing 95 in the right lane, with cars behind him. This *IS* illegal. You are required to remain in the left lane unless overtaking, and he is clearly not overtaking. You cannot overtake a vehicle by matching their speed. You are legally required to go faster, or fall back in line in the left lane. Again, yes this could have been avoided if the car in left lane was going slower. But legally they have done nothing wrong, at all. www.legislation.vic.gov.au/in-force/acts/road-safety-act-1986/206 www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/a-to-z-of-road-rules/give-way www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/a-to-z-of-road-rules/freeways

    I see a few problems here: The Falcon driver was sitting just behind and to the left of the Subaru like a douchebag. Simply avoid that position unless you have a penchant for trouble. Make your mind up and pass at a reasonable pace or sit back at a safe distance similar to where you would sit when directly behind the other car. Subaru tried to move to the left lane as they were in the right (overtaking) lane and the Cammer was coming up being them (the reason they attempted to move left). Subaru driver likely saw the Falcon earlier and assumed they were happy to maintain the poor position to the left and just behind the Subaru. Subaru driver hesitated and wobbled a little as they (incorrectly) assessed that they'd just be able to merge in front of the poorly positioned Falcon before the Falcon driver boxed everyone in as they either hovered in a blocking position, or passed at about 1kph faster than the Subaru was travelling. Subaru didn't accelerate to a safe distance in front of the Ford driver resulting in a dangerous lane change. As the Subaru driver was (poorly) assessing the lane change, the Falcon driver realised that the Subaru was likely going to move in front of them (as the Cammer was moving up next to the Falcon / behind the Subaru in the overtaking lane), had a flush of impatience /applied selfish first order thinking, accelerated to cut off the Subaru just as the Subaru started to move left. The Falcon driver probably accelerated to prevent loss of some arbitrary measure of time that would arise from ceeding some space to the Subaru so the Cammer could safely get past before they overtook the Subaru (in the overtaking lane), got cut off, had a flash of ego, then tried to make a point by attempting a dangerous move to cut the Subaru driver off on the inside, but essentially just cut their own nose off to spite their face. Two bad decisions resulted in an accident that significantly delayed both drivers, risked injury or worse, inconvenienced hundreds of other people, except the Craptiva driver and driver of the black Falcon who failed to stop and render assistance. Ford driver definitely deserves a dangerous driving offence for that stunt. Yes the Subaru driver massively screwed up and should wear some of the blame too.

    The only reason that sort of 'blind spot' collision occurs is because some drivers are very bad drivers who do NOT do an over the shoulder check and only glance in their side mirrors. Since the car manufacturer's have been putting side mirrors on cars there has been no 'traditional' blind spot caused by the middle and rear door pillars due to that area being visible in the properly set side mirror. However, the are beside the car has always needed the shoulder check to know it's clear.
