    I was thinking the same thing. So now he's destroyed the award just to put the cover on a real chip which will never be seen. And all at the risk of losing the processor. I guess you get to do things like that when you're a reviewer and you have all the coolest tech lying around. Personally would still have not done that.

    It would have been so much easier to just put the dummy with special heatspreader aside, take the working CPU and use some powerful laser engraver- or how the heck this kind of writing on the heatspreader is done- and engrave it yourself. After that you would have had even 2- the original and unharmed dummy from AMD, that you can put on your desk and then you would have another self-engraved and totally functional one, maybe for your personal rig. The way Linus chose resulted in a totally destroyed dummy and another CPU, thats heated way above its temperature-limit in an pizza-oven, violently scratched with some blade, sanded down with some diamond-sandpaper-liquid and in the end glued together with some mysterious red goo. But at least it was interesting to watch :D Poor AMD, its like you get your kids some very special gift for christmas and after opening their present they instantly start smashing it to pieces with a baseball bat and glue its pieces randomly back together

How do you figure that's in any way similar to taking something off of a budget oriented product and putting it on a higher quality product -made by an entirely different company? I think you're grasping for any reason to hate on something he's wanted to do for some time now to something that belongs to him, and as such can do whatever he wants with it.

    Wouldn't the diameter of the beam be more important than the power rating? For instance, half diameter gives you 4x more watts/area, whereas doubling power only gives you 2x watts/area. I would think the watt/area would be a better indication of the material it can work with (may be slow at 40w, but who cares if it gets the job done).

  • @LunaphaseLasersOfficial

    @LunaphaseLasersOfficial

    6 жыл бұрын

    Power density only takes you so far, unfortunately. Keep in mind, there's a physical limit to how far a beam can be focused, which is dependent on it's wavelength. With a CO2 laser the wavelength is 10600nm which is fairly large, and you cannot achieve a focal point smaller than that. Unfortunately, more power really is the only solution for certain materials.

  • @jakegarrett8109

    @jakegarrett8109

    6 жыл бұрын

    I know it will be dependent on several things (the IHS is a heat spreader by design). So you have a function of rate of heat transfer from heated area (thermal conductivity dependent), absorptivity (how much it actually turns into heat vs bounces back), and light beam physics limiting area (as you mentioned). Then you also have temperature the materiel needs to hit to solve for that equation. Shouldn't be difficult to derive that equation, but I'll leave that for after my exams to solve for fun in my free time (someone's probably solved it, but where's the fun in just looking it up?)

    Hey Linus can you recommend a motherboard that's ideal for overclocking please? I can get a Ryzen 1700 upto 4GHz for about half a minute before the system freezes so I suspect it's an issue with the power delivery. Thermals got high but it didn't crash because of the thermals as I could get it to reach even higher temps and remain stable at lower voltages and clock speeds so I think I just need a motherboard with better VRMs. But I don't know which series of motherboards or even which brand is best. I can sort out any thermal issues I'll have but it's this problem that I'm clueless about.
