Not always, but a lot of the time, you can pivot those "not interesting" or menial tasks into fun modernization projects. Every software system will become a legacy system and usually that happens pretty quickly. Knowing how to build systems that are tolerant of a changing business and software culture is really powerful and can be a really fun challenge. Figuring out how to inject tests into old legacy systems, modernize systems with an updated language, framework or platform, or shift the system architecture in place can be really technically rewarding and engaging. This kind of work also often presents a lot of business value. Can't speak to the place this kind of work might have in a contracting space however. Great tips Jason! Thanks for sharing.

I did a Level Design test for a AAA company recently, today I got the fail email. Their feedback was "Great use of landmarks, clear to see the multiple routes" etc... and they end it with "it would've been good to actually play the level, there was no climbing system and had to rely on your custom high jump to reach areas of the level" I'm pretty mad because nowhere in the job description nor test brief did it mention anything about me needing to be a programmer. Like I already designed, blocked out and wrote an 18 page doc for a AAA FPS level in a week Is this normal? I feel like I've worked really hard and they've said "it's great but you didn't do the part that wasn't your job so no" :/
