Why Would A Benevolent God Allow for Suffering? | Dr. Shabir Ally

Alex Elvidge, the lead writer on our team, had some questions about Islam, so we invited her onto the set to ask them of Dr. Shabir Ally. Here’s one: “Why would a benevolent God who loves us and cares for us allow horrible suffering and tragedies to happen, one example being COVID?”

@Suleiman _38 since u said there is no sections in Islam. All religions have sections, But Islam is unique since they kill each other saying we are right. After few years of Mohammed' s death, his all relatives were extinguished from earth because of the rule of kill the one who speak against me. Killing Muslims in many parts of the world!!!!! Explain me about what is happening in Nigeria, Syria, Pakistan, Egypt, Iran etc. Where is the Christian population there. When Islam in power they kill innocent Christian, Hindu, other religions including Ahmadeeyas by just claiming religious blasphemy. Even some one say Mohammed's sunna from hadees, it become blasphemy if they are not Muslim. Why you speak against China? It's favorite of Imran Khan. China and Pakistan are good brothers.

Well in your world view, the example that you have given about the cheetah and the buck, there seems to be no evil there, because for the cheetah, it is good that he'll be having his dinner. How do we know that the buck thinks that the cheetah is evil if they both don't work within the basis of morality?

@@Yameen200 I don't agree with that and here's why, yes I am a Christian man however to answer your question I don't want animals to be hurt, but at the same time when I go hunting I'm shooting that duck for a meal to provide for my family and have them eat, I'm not out there just to shoot it to just go out and torture it, I'm out there for meat and to provide food for my family. Or like if I go shoot a deer I'm not there to torture the deer I'm there to go get meat and possibly even a blanket, food warmth meat. Have you ever been to a fish market? If you've been to a fish market you see fish all in a row on ice on shelves, was it wrong for the fisherman to go and fish for that food that people want? No. I'll tell you a quick story, at my Mom and Dad's house we had raccoons eating insulation out of the barn, and there was a raccoon standing out by a tree the one day ready to die, I bring the BB gun out, the creature looks at me I look at it and I shot him. It took me several hits just to have him killed, he didn't die by me shooting him, he died on his own because of the insulation, however I did pick him up and toss him into the field and yes I used a shovel to scoop him up and throw him into the field. So when you say that animals can feel pain yes they can you're right, but animals can also get scared of you, animals are very territorial, and some will kill you. So naturally it's not wrong for an animal to eat another animal nor is it sinful for an animal to do that because animals don't know what sin is they have no concept or knowledge of what that is, so if a duck is getting bitten by a cheetah yes the duck is going to die but also the cheetah knows it's getting food for it's Young. So you got to think on the outside of the box a little bit, Brian May who's a strong animal rights activist said I don't know why people go and kill animals but we kill them not for sport but we kill them for the meat and food, I don't believe the dinosaurs were destroyed by an asteroid I believe that the dinosaurs were killed off by man to eat them and use their skin as pelts and use their meat for food that's why we killed them.

I am a big fan of Shabir. However, I always reason with this question by concluding that we are limited in our ability to differentiate net positives and negatives as well as understanding the process of creation. The Qur'an reminds us of two things relevant to this. First is that we inherently lack knowledge and understanding. Second is that we may incorrectly perceive what is good for us vs what is bad for us.

Similarly their are billions of things that we as humans still don't know the answer to even on this planet so what about the infinite universe, Yet man dares to challenge God The answer is there are some things we'll be told in the hereafter If everything was told here then there'd be no test Also we can't do anything about this Believe me I've studied hundreds of philosophies and religions and none of them practically comes near to Islam

The Quran says that nothing bad comes from God and all bad comes from the deeds of our own hands. This means that every challenge we face isn't really bad for us , it is our reactions to these challenges that make them bad. We react in fear , we react with arrogance , we react with our ego and therefore the challenge gets worse and worse.

I have gone through suffering in my life of 60+ years but mine was nothing compared to the pain and torture suffered by others, man or animal. Suffering allows me to be thankful, to feel relief, that my Creator has been specially merciful to me. The suffering of a true believer is nothing like the pain of a non-believing person. This has a special significance in Islam. Only a true Muslim, one who has an undying faith in Allah, can really comprehend suffering. How can one explain the thoughts and worries of some of the companions of Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) when they felt ease in their lives? They worried that perhaps Allah was not with them, that He had given them the easy life of the disbelievers. Suffering, therefore, increases faith and draws one so close to Allah that one can even feel His presence in their lives.

Appreciate the answer of Dr Shabir. I think we know us humans as a creature have free will and we recognize God by his characteristics, along with being benevolent God is also just. While God has created us humans with free will and tendencies to do both good and evil. It is His justice that requires him to judge us and reward the good and punish the evil (Heaven and Hell). And for Him to judge us He has created this world as a test with a limited time. And Him being benevolent and merciful He has guided us through his prophets so we can stay good and be rewarded. So God is bearing the evil till the day of judgement. Why God created us at all? the answer to this question is beyond us. perhaps we will ask him when we meet him.

If Allah doesn't want to test us, then Allah should have sent us all to straight to heaven instead of sending us all to earth. Reference from Quran below: Quran Al-Baqarah 2:155 - “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient” Quran Al-Baqarah 2:286 - “Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity”

Tough question. In an ideal world, we learn to look to one another when suffering occurs. As a species, we still haven’t grasped the importance of living in communion with one another. We are still too self-absorbed, in fact, pathological self-absorption is often rewarded and encouraged. “Survival of the fittest” does not produce compassion, love, cooperation, or symbiosis. It produces bigger and meaner predators who are concerned and feel entitled to one thing……more and they never stop.

In paradise, no one will ever get sick, no one has to work, everything will be provided whatever a person desires, and no one will ever die in paradise and live forever. This world is only a test from God, that's why we have life span in this world to praise God alone and worship him. If u do good in this test/world, you will be grand Paradise. If not, then Hell. May Allah grand us Paradise through his mercy. Allah hu Akbar.

First at all, the same question was also once questioned by angel before God want to create adam on earth. He simply replied that He know what angels don't. Then, adam taught by God, and he demonstrated his ability to gain knowledge to angels. The point is, in this world, we have good and evil, and human have the ability to learn something. For example, even in the time of prophet there were slavery existed in society. Then human learn the slavery is a bad thing and the common sense today will agree that slavery is againts human right. That also apply to covid 19, where human can learn from it and try to fight the desease and improve life standard.

Excellent explanation, one of was thinking as well. The problem is that if God created the world that we are in now as purely good then it totally negates the freedom of choice that we have. Because then there is no possibility of a drive to compel us towards evil. The issue with this question too is that, when there is goodness in this world, many would think "God has nothing to do with this", and that it is just cause of nature and goodness decision of humankind, but the moment there is an evil, immediately we say "Where is God? ". We blame God, negating the cause of nature and decision of humankind. It is simply the hatred of the premise of believing in God not arguing the premise of law of creation at all. Let's assume that we are all Gods. So when good things happen, yes we exist, we do good. But the moment evil happens, suddenly we don't exist, and we are all evil too? God created this world (a sandbox), and given us a manual, for us to operate. If he interferes with this, in some ways for example in Quran Allah said that if He wishes he could make them all believers, but this is a test for them. This is what he meant, in Quran (67:2): [He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving. If he made us all believers and all good, why there is a need of a choice, or judgement who has conducted the best of actions, or even a manual at all? That's why Dr Shabir said the other world that this exists is the world of angels (they don't have the manual or Holy Book) because there are already designed in such a way the predisposition is only good and no evil at all. Now given this establishment, the question is that those who follows the manual, where are they to bring order to the sandbox? Or where are those other human beings (even those who does not follow the manual)? What do they do in this sandbox to stop evil or propagate good? That is why hereafter exists, heaven and hell exist too; to reward those who choose good, and to punish who choose evil. That is why if we look at Surah Mulk (The Dominion) again, (67:8-10) “....Did a warner not come to you?” They will reply, “Yes, a warner did come to us, but we denied and said, ‘Allah has revealed nothing. You are extremely astray.’” And they will lament, “If only we had listened and reasoned, we would not be among the residents of the Blaze!” In this chapter God clearly explain that he created the world perfect, and then he made the animals and other creation perfect for their one or many functions, then He mentioned human, immediately the premise of choice and consequences were introduced. Along that too, the premise of a warner was introduced to indicate that there is someone or groups of His creation that tells us to do something, to make the right choices etc. I think reading the Quran with an open mind and refresh mindset is important. Allah knows best.

Great answer. I was thinking the same. What if there was only good in this world and no evil? Then we would be good by nature like angels. There would have been no free will to choose since there would have been no choice to make! So we can say that evil comes from our free will.

I was just thinking that the evils of this world allows us to appreciate the goodness in it, however, the world is just a test. One beauty of the many beauties of my lord is that he enjoins what is good and prohibits what is bad, but it is the human beings who make the bad choices by the free will the creator has given them. This doesn't mean that good people won't suffer, many prophets suffered in this worldly life. Prophets were sent as an example to follow and if you follow them you will pass the test. Once you die and are resurrected, you will realise that the worldly life was just like a dream. The sufferings in the world will be equal to the suffering in ones dream, yet the merciful lord will reward you for your patience and trust in him whilst you temporarily suffered with eternal happiness.

Salam Aleykum There is not an ultimate and universal answer to this question that will satisfy everyone because people are different. People do not relate to every „because“. The „because“ must be one that he or she finds compelling rationally, intellectually, and spiritually. I mean to ask why suffer is like asking why are we here? What’s the purpose of creation? By the way, even the angels asked Allah in the second chapter of the Quran the same question regarding the creation of humans. So if the Never sinning, perfect angels can ask this question then certainly we should ask it, too. I thought about it and I think that if you create humans with free will, by definition they must make choices. Otherwise it would be contradictory to the definition of free will when decisions were already made for them. However, free will has certainly consequences. When choices are made they might affect other people in a negative way and cause harm. Because if you have to make a moral decision you might decide in a way that benefits you the most. However, in order to feel for your fellow human beings and to show compassion, it also requires some suffering on your side to at least get and intuition of what pain this Person might is going through. Because the good things and the bad things in life help our personal moral, mental and Spiritual growth. No matter how much you love your pet fish, no matter how often you feed it, the Fish will never be able to relate to you and to develop a real empathic, loving and caring relationship. It might not even realise that you care for it as the fish is such a primitive creature. Now, you might have a dog, and the dogs capacity to give back your love is of course much more developed but still limited to a certain extend. But let’s say u have a child that grows up in front of you, that you support through good times and bad times, that you care for in sickness and that you laugh with in times of joy. The relationship, the love, the compassion, the friendship, the laughs but also the pain, the suffering, the tears, the sadness, the worries and the struggles u both have gone trough is what eventually helps you to develop and grow a bond that is almost impossible to destroy. This life is our personal stage of growth and to grow you must leave your comfort zone which only can happen if things are challenging physically, mentally or spiritually.

That is a horrendous evil test to place on anyone. And if God has the control over it and he’s all wonderful, to allow such an event to take place in the name of learning lessons or greater good is humiliating to say the least. I think most of us who come from a privileged life fail to see the depth of pain some people go through. And it is absolutely not fair and a disgrace to call it a “test” or its for a greater good elsewhere.

And thus far we haven't understood what happens once our we are dead therefore we can never truly say what seems bad is necessarily bad. e.g. A child is born and immediately dies and goes to a blissful afterlife without having to go through troubles of this world. Now, while the parents and relatives mourn around the dead baby, he's somewhere out there happy forever. He did not quote any scriptures, so I don't know how this answer connects to Islamic wisdom. To me, as another philosopher, it occurs, that the real answer is: "The real answer can't be understood by the physical brain created by god". In other theologies the answer can only be experienced by actually reaching "Moksha" (Hindism), "Nirvana"(Buddhism) or "Entering God's Kingdom" Christianity or "Returning to Allah" (Islam).

It's funny and painful at the same time to watch theologists try to answer that question. Since there is no logical answer to it, except that adults shouldn't believe in imaginary friends. God is sitting up there and watching sick children being born and dying, without knowing any happiness, only suffering. To try and justify that is like trying to argue that water is dry.

I found it funny when they tried to justify Covid-19. 2 years later everyone is still partying, not washing our hands, and have gone right back to contributing to climate change in an even worse economy. That’s a net negative. Thanks, God 🤙🏾

I must say I am disappointed in Shabir’s response to the question on suffering. If I were Shabir, I would be sure to quote Deuteronomy as well the book of Job from the Torah. It explains how God disciplines people through suffering. It also helps to build perseverance. The Quran also talks about this in several verses. Once again, I think Shabir could’ve done a better job with his response.

Hello! Im wondering if the person who does evil things have a mental illness, like schizophrenia or psychosis. What will god do to that person in the after life ? Or if a person is going trough sexual abuse or torture, and ends up taking his/hers own life to end the suffering. How will god response?

A Person who is insane will not be asked for his actions, bec it was not in his Control. A muslim isnt allowed to commit sucide in any condition. but if such thing happnes, Then God Is all Knowing and all Forgiving and he will judge him accordingly based in his Stuitation.
