Picked Wolcen up during a Steam sale thanks to this video. The campaign is short, but the gameplay's generally fun. However, this town-building new game+ mode is pretty cool. I'm way more into the "Champion of Stormfall" mode than I ever was in the campaign. Anyway, this is a good recommendation, and it'd be nice if Wolcen made enough returns to keep it getting updates. The game is a pretty cool mix of Dark Souls/Bloodborne and Diablo, leaning more towards the Diablo side. You can't just spam a bunch of skills, you need to stick and move. Fun stuff, definitely worthy of a playthrough for ARPG fans.

I just read fresh reviews on steam and seems like this is still a piece of crap and one person said that game does not save as it should, he was over 2h into act 2 and when he stop and came back few hours later game did not saved at all and he had to start act 2 from the beginning and he had same issue many times until he rage quit.

@@Voltomess From what I've experienced (admittedly very small sample size), the game seems to save the campaign progress at the very beginning of quests, so if you quit near the end of a long quest, you absolutely can lose campaign progress. Character progress is different though, xp, inventory etc. gets properly saved when you quit, so I can't wrap my head around why can't they do the same with the campaign.

This game is in hiatus for years in my steam. I am at point to wake it back again in 2023 (Waiting for 6.6.2023) . Thx for review.

I picked it up a few months ago on sale, and I'm actually enjoying it. It looks great and plays well (at least in sp) so far for me. I think the Steam reviews are skewed negative for reasons or whatever, but right now, if you like the genre, it's good. Solid B tier.

People is stupid af. That's why I've being playing wolcen since alpha and half of those game breaking bugs are a myth and other half aren't common either. Many are related to unusual hardware most don't use. I personally never ever had a single game breaking bug. I've being in their discord many years as well and was flooded with toxic kids. The neutral people were called white knights all the time lol Wolcen always did a solid job and was releasing a monthly bug fixing patch. Not every 6 months or a year like this video says, monthly.

is it possible to disable the flickering strobo effect telegraphing a hit? not for accessability to avoid seizures but simply because it looks annoying.

After being dissapointed by the D4 beta I looked through my library trying to find something to play till the next POE league and saw Wolcen, decided to load up and was very much surprised. I have not played it in quite a while and I was blown away with the level of their cinematics (granted some have bad camera angles), the creative design behind the bosses and how good the combat felt. I was instantly hooked and can't get enough of this game right now!

It was once a disaster, but these days it is mostly a solid ARPG. The latest patch did introduce a few more bugs for me, but I'm still having fun and im grinding it out in the endgame currently.

Good video! Might give it a try. On another note: how's inquisitor martyr's new season? Is it worth jumping in?

On their Steam page it says act 4 update is on the way, don't know when it will drop. But it seems they are gonna update alot of the skills etc. Maybe it's time to test it out again. I only played for the first couple of weeks when the game launched.

Its not bad. Ive had one gfx bug where (Acher) arrows and magics aren't visible. Aside from this, its been pretty fun and looks gorgeous

I've always wanted to try Wolcen. I wish I could catch it on sale. Thanks for the update. BTW, if wrist health is an issue, check out the 1 HP channel on KZread. I use the 9 minute Wrist Warrior routine every day.

I think so. I didn't experience anything that stood out, personally, but your mileage may vary there of course. As with any game, really.

Where did you find your build? I'm trying to find some fully described necromancer builds but it not exists... In PoE it is so easy to find any build...

I got it this week, and its good looking, but it 'feels' a little clunky. Swinging melee weapons misses alot, and the player sticks to the ground.. its very clunky in melee. Im only a few hrs in, and Ive encountered a few problems. Failure tovcreate a game, ui icons staying on screen after level up, enemy placement resetting after combat begins ans teleportjnf back to start position..

I just started a few weeks ago from the sale, and ya game is awesome!

On sale now on STEAM for $9.99. Gave it a try and like it so far :D

I played it up and until the Bloodtrails update. I'll reinstall it again on the 15th when the story chapter update comes out. I was hoping there would be a lot more skills available though.

3:40 campaign is one of the strongest Wolcen pros. It's very cinematic for ARPG, has great levels and bosses, as well as it introduces game concepts gradually, you have opportunity to play with various skills more (as respeccing late game is more time consuming cause you need to tune your items too).

I think Grim Dawn has a lot more depth. And content. But like I said in the vid, Wolcen is gonna give you a good 50-100 hours of fun.

yes, I would say end-game doesn't have that much variation, like LE. But I had a good time grinding it still, you just won't be doing that for more than 100 hours, I feel.

As for the controller, have you tested Diablo II resurrected ? I found it very good for such an old school arpg

i remeber buying that game in the beginning of early access, one of the main reason was wasd movement (i don't remember if we had it or it was just promised, but that was one of the main reasons) and i have to say i am still a bit salty that this never came

Wish I could say the same but I'm having no shortage of crashes and plenty of bugs. Don't know how you can say the controller support is so good when there are numerous obvious areas with loot that can't even be pathed to without grabbing your mouse instead. On top of that as soon as i reach endgame and get the new (to me) Oshara quests I do one and the second disappears from my game without a trace after a restart.

I didnt have any issues with the controller, and I didn't crash once. And I used to have tons of issues on the same system. But ye, different systems, different hardware, your mileage may vary unfortunately. The perks of PC gaming.

I got 12 hours of playtime on Steam from about 1 year ago and I stopped back then because the game was just soo easy. I noticed I was just mindlessly rushing through everything and got really bored doing so. Is the game harder or has more difficulty settings now?

It doesn't have difficulty settings, but the endgame ramps up and does become pretty hard. Campaigns are a breeze, endgame definitely isn't. With harder mobs, modifiers all over the place, it is challenging.

You're doing the hardest content and I started 2 days ago with my 20ish lvl character and gameplay looks exactly the same. We stand next to our skeleton minions and the big guy, waiting untill they kill everything.

I wouldn't say it is a problem. Your scaling is with more and more minions at higher level, I have way more than a lvl 20 character, and then just gear of course. That is just how it is, isn't it

I stoped way back in the days since once i wanted to replay it and my hero that was maxed out was deleted somehow. I stoped then because loosing my hero for no reason is unforgivable.

Ye, the game had many issues back then. But many games have deleted characters back in the day, some of those games you might be playing right now.

After a couple of hours playing it on my PS5 i was positively surprised how beautiful this game looks and how fun it is to play. Great fun game

help please. I started playing wolcen a few days ago and in game my armor does show on character and while i am in a zone a replace symbol red ball shows on random items even on weapons i am holding a gun but in game and cut sence its a red ball that say replace. any thoughts on this.

Wait, did they patch/update the original release of the controller support? I played it when they added it and it was a joke. Controlling the game with a gamepad was beyond obnoxious and terrible. It sounds like it's better now? For my money, D3 & Grim Dawn have the best controller support, I don't know if this is anywhere near either of those.

I think they did. I played with a controller last few months, and it's really good. I haven't played GD woth controller tbh. But wolcen even changes the UI based on input, so press controller button and the UI changes to that. Press MKB and it changes back. It's really smooth.

Unfortunately it doesn't really matter if the game is decent if it's unplayable. Solo, sure. But I like to play games with friends and there's been a Desync issue since day one that STILL isn't fixed. It locks the any one that joins your game to facing a certain direction. Me and a friend came back to check it out a few months ago and it was still present. So every time we moved maps one of us would be stuck, not able to attack in any other direction. Needless to say we just swapped games to another ARPG instead with no issues. Needless to say, I did enjoy the video a lot. Good stuff dude.

This just happened to some guy and his gf on PlayStation too. He said they had to quit out and then took 4 tries to get back into co-op together. I think the only people praising this game are the solo players.

Hey man, I heard that you can't replay the story mode with your character, you need to create a new one. Is that true? I never played this game before and I will play it alone most likely bc I don't have many friends to play with. So I would like to know that I can replay the story mode or not without creating a new character each time. I usually get attached to my first chars so I don't like making too many chars just to play story mode.

i'm not 100% sure, as this is not something I would ever want to do, replay the story on a single character multiple times. But I am pretty sure that isn't possible, no, because you go through the story, and you can replay certain key missions in the end game, but not the whole thing.

Yes the classes I can see. Wolcen can feel limited in that regard, although there are plenty of skills still. I enjoy GD too. I should give that game another go at some point as well.

Tried it once again, still the same stuff (not talking about the bugs, cause that's all they do, correct bugs from 2 years ago); uninstalled. Perhaps if they dare to do a Wolcen 2..

And unlike Diablo 4, this has an Off-line mode. Which instantly makes it better.

The game had Hugh potential and still it have really good gameplay, sound and graphic and ofc they fix alot of things but we waited years for ACT4. Still think the campaign and environment is one of the best in the genre, its like a mix between Diablo and Warhammer world. Hope they could make a sequel in the future with all the things they want to do.

Could be. I just think that if that was the plan, they would've made that decision ages ago. I think they're committed to this one. Also, there isn't much point in making a wolcen 2, apart from the negative connotations perhaps. I don't see many advantages, but who knows. Time will tell I guess.

@@Thyworm I've seen ppl giving bad reviews on steam just because "the stuck animation killed it" for them... But they dont give a s$it about how good the voice acting is, how good the singleplayer campaign/story is, or how good the game looks and perform in general... The skills especially look great and feel great and impactful! I guess we all have different views and opinions, but at the very least we should take in consideration and properly rate all aspects of a game before giving it a score. I wish ppl would stop giving bad reviews just because this or that game doe not have "cancel animation" like that other game. I just learn to play the game as is, and i dont let that "struck animation" stop me from enjoying all other aspects of the game.

Is it mandatory to finish the story if I did it when the games launched please ? T_T ?

Have fun Robert, as long as you keep your expectations in check, you should be fine. Especially on sale, this game is a bargain, but you could argue it is worth full price these days as well

Performance good Dude you got an FPS meter enabled and were inte the 40s when there was some action. So depending on HW it might be a lag fest.

Overall performance was fine. It's an arpg, you're going to encounter moments with 40fps in pretty much any arpg, because of how much shit can happen. And I'm running at the highest settings, with a bit of an older PC by now. So it is good.

I'll tell you a little story about Wolcen, what originally was Umbra. This game popped up on kickstarter as Umbra and was way way different then what it is now. The proof of concept demo was a really neat concept but it was too difficult for them to program and so they made it into the game it is now. The game isn't bad, just not what it was supposed to be for us kickstarters it sucked but it happens. Now here's the part I never played the game after it released. The team making the game stopped talking to their kickstarter backers about anything. When the game released the dev team have out fee Kickstarter reward keys to steamers. Meanwhile, 0, and I mean zero kickstarters had any game keys at all. For months kickstarter backers were either forced to buy the game again or wait to see if they would get their keys. Finally we got our keys after throwing a big fit all over different platforms. But we still didn't have our kickstarter rewards and physical rewards. They finally gave some of the ingame rewards but not the physical stuff. After all these years they are going to ship out physical rewards now... this year they updated kickstarter backers that they're going to send it..... how many years has it been? Idk anymore. But i did jump into the game like 4 weeks ago for the first time and was playing. It's a decent game and I still have 2 game keys left, standard game keys not kickstarter one and no one wants them lol. 😑

Wolcen is a Jewel of a ARPG , It's highly innovative, beautiful and the combat is fantastic.. Sadly the horrible launch, bugs, and lack of communication from the devs really tained the game. There's so many little things they could have done to tighten the game up and I think it was just a young team that was figuring it out as they went and made several mistakes. Wolcen is on of my favorite games I've ever played and the new endgame expansion makes the game even better and fixed a ton of bugs. I truly hope they keep adding to the game because is a remarkable game that has gotten a bad rap

Hmm, unsure. Maybe I completed the campaign not too long ago. Definitely ran it more than once. Well, at the very least, you don't have to do it more than once. Starting a new char is recommended I would say, to make optimal use of all the content.

I just bought this on sale for quite a heavy discount. I was instantly disappointed by how clunky the combat felt. Like I can't dodge if I've already started an ability, it locks you in place until it finishes. So it doesn't feel responsive at all. I've always hated clunky feeling games like that, and it's why I've always loved blizzard games in the past because of how polished, snappy, and responsive the controls felt. Is this how they intend to keep the combat?

the combat has been like that for a while. It depends a bit which build you're playing, but you're right. That probably won't be fixed any time soon, is my guess. It's been in there for a long time like this.

I wouldn't keep a broken game and hope for the best. I'd refund it and if they do actually change it later you can rebuy it. It's better than getting stuck with a broken game that might always be broken. I also read that there are still bugs in the game that have been in there since launch day and they released their buggy game on consoles too. I wouldn't put high hopes into a developer who does stuff like that. People think they rushed it out to get ahead of the Diablo IV beta.

I like Wolcen but don't have a GPU to play it; I can only play it on Low Settings. Going to try it again. 😊

It has multiplayer, but I don't think it has matchmaking. I never played this in co-op though.

You say there's no game breaking bugs yet some guy just posted in the forums that his level 39 guy on PlayStation got kicked to the main menu and won't let him load that character anymore. That sounds game breaking to me. And I know that maybe it's just a console issue, but still, I can't imagine getting that far and then having your character bricked.

Im sure some guy has issues. I just said that for me, there were no gamebreaking bugs, and those used to exist for me. The game improved a lot, but your mileage may vary of course

I'm trying to decide between Wolcen and Last Epoch, I like more the graphics of Wolcen and Last Epoch I couldn't find a ranged class that I like, I usually play mages but they seem really underpowered in Lost Epoch, Mana issues and just lightining skills seems to be used.

They are still quite different. Wolcen is regularly on sale however, for 8 dollars, you should just get that for sure. It is fun these days

I just picked it up. 10.00 on steam... 100 hours per dollar ratio should be a win.

The singleplayer campaign is A+. I really like the voice acting, the actors are really good.

Wolcen was called bad when it first released. To be honest, these devs have done more than most triple A companies have done for modern releases. The game now is good. It's an above average ARPG.

for sure, and I think it'll keep improving as well. There's more stuff coming up, levelling and city building gets buffed, an act 4, rebalancing again of skills. Should be good.

Above average if your standards are below average. 3 years and itemization is still a disaster with whole item types being useless, no new items added, 1 (ONE) new skill added (useless). It wasn't called bad when it first released only. It's been called bad since forever, because there are design flaws that are not acceptable for great majority of ARPG players, which is reflected in this game's playerbase. Technical issues were the main reason in the beginning, but once they've started fixing those issues, people have focused more on the actual gameplay, which turned out to be lackluster as well, and left. Game pretty much didn't change content-wise since Bloodtrail update. They've been only balancing stuff here and there, except some minor changes like new endgame activities (that are ultimately useless, since you farm hunts anyway).

@@Thyworm Just for u to know, the idea was nice but... Maybe it is hardware material... Dunno. Anyway, I launched, it crashed. Right after, I created a new character, tried to take items on my stash, then had the old "stash bug" with items I cannot move between my inventory and the stash, then I dropped an item with "null_sombra" as a name... I have ton confess, I already stopped after 3 hours. That's too bad... I paid for the kickstarter when it was called umbra, since then this game was not what I expected and very buggy for me. Thanks anyway, at least I reinstalled it :]

The game might have issues trying to access old stuff. It was fine for me btw, but I can imagine items of 3 years old don't work anymore

i still think wolcen is a great game my only issue i had with my 500+ total hours other than the disconnects and bugs is some items are use on all builds because there too op, and gold being found mostly from yellow items sold coz i hate picking up crap to sell i would rather they be worthless and give alot more money in the city planner. last time i played i think was when dragon chronicle come out and i enjoyed it for the most part coz of the disconnects. but i keep an eye on it and plan to plan the next chronicle if all works. campain was pretty fun but i never wanna do storys over and over

Well, that mechanic doesn't really work, because you still need to do the quests to get the idol slots and passives. I see what you mean, but it isn't very well designed.

@@Thyworm yeah, BUT you can get to the ice deer god place and then skip the rest or some say you can skip to act 9 and still get all idol slots and passives though i have not done it myself. i know there are alot in act 9 though, you still need dungeon keys and the power to beat said dungeons though. so better mechanic would be nice for both games!

You should try it. I don't think it is a fun experience, plus those dungeons are some of the worst content LE has to offer. And frustrating too

I got it on sale and am not particularly invested in it but I like this style of game... but I am here wonder why the hell all the negative reviews on Steam? It may not be the most amazing game ever but so far I think it is a very enjoyable way to kill some time and I have been enjoying it a lot.

Honestly... I can't agree with this review in terms of bugs, my SO and I got the game on launch... we just reinstalled a week ago and wanted to do a fresh coop run through the game's story mode... and ran into almost every bug we had seen at launch. Now I will be fair, the game runs near perfect if done in singleplayer/ offline mode but... we found playing it together (the reason we bought it) to be... all but impossible. Last Epoch faired as the much better game choice it seems for us.

Have to agree. He destroyed his credibility with this overly positive feedback. The restock gamebreaking bug was recently fixed, but lost any incentive to continue with Wolcen. Bought Last Epoch, but it felt like a generic ARPG without the bells and whistles from a more polished/AAA game. Got my refund today.

Just picked this up for 13$ on steam.

I dont know man, did they hire designers? They surely did not have any on release. It was not the bugs, it was the simple fact that you could bring the game to a newbie theorycrafter from any arpg subreddit and they would find that the mechanics are poorly thoughtout in less than 5 minutes. At it's core the developers did not know what they are doing.

"Performance is great" Gets 52 fps in the video with nothing on screen 😂👍

Did the devs learn how ARPGs work or do they still give you nodes like "10% INCREASED Damage IF the enemy is slowed" ?^^*

Another youtuber also recently played it. or tried to. It still ate his character, never even saved. And if a dev cant even fix this issue in 3 years, I dont think you not having gamebreaking bugs is enough to recommend it to people.

The game can be rather fun, agreed. Endgame missions are way better now, but that's honestly about it. There is little build variety and the mechanics and descriptions are still rather bad, with stuff still not working as (should be) intended.

I played 100+ hours when it came out. I guess I was lucky for two reasons, I wasn't following the "Umbra" project, so my expectations were non-existant, and I wasn't affected by the "game-breaking" bugs that were apparently present. I only encountered a bug once or twice, and it didn't really block my progression or bother me beyond that. Yes, it is the most visually stunning ARPG, even 3 years later! Skills, items and combat are great, but end-game, min-maxing crafting is an unbearable pain.

@Thyworm Just bought it. For $10, yes, it's worth it. Although it's a bit clunky for my liking, it's a good game to kill time. I really really hope Diablo IV is the Diablo we all deserve.

Everyone needs to remind themselves that this is an INDIE game. Made with a very small team of passionate developers and makes money from crowdfunding and one-time game purchases. Updates and bug fixes take longer because they don't have the same resources as a AAA gaming company.

I mean, yes and no. It is indie. But other indie games with similar size have been much more effective at bug fixing, or just building a game in general. Now, that can have many causes, but Last Epoch fixed game breaking bugs within a day or two, back when they had 15 devs. I get the update cycle, but bugs were really problematic for many years.

Very bad take, indie devs with teams multiple times smaller than this have created masterpieces. Wolcen's devs were/are one of the most clueless and indecisive ones there are, confirmed by ex-employees who say the company (especially the managers) is a mess, and it's reflected in the quality of this game.
