Why were they so keen to LOCK HIM in his TOMB? The story of Squire Cabell of Buckfastleigh.
The tale of an evil, murderous country squire, his pacts with the devil, and the townspeople's efforts to keep him in his tomb after his death.
Although it's also quite possible he was a fairly decent chap after all.
Either way, Squire Cabell provided the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle's famous Sherlock Holmes adventure, the Hound of the Baskervilles.

This is a great program. I live in Buckfastleigh, there needs to be more like this, about our towns history. Thank you.
Fantastic storytelling!
How interesting! Thank you for sharing this bit of history.
Squire Richard Cabell was my 6th great grandfather (the tomb also houses his parents, my 7th great-grandparents), and I have visited the graveyard and surrounding areas several times. It is a fascinating place, quite special, and I appreciate you making this video.
Came across this while doing research regarding the name "Basterfield" Thank you for the great content!
