In the American Civil war there were units on both sides which had uniforms heavily influenced by their individual heritage, fashion crazes or special requirements.
The Confederates had one unit that embraced their heritage to the extreme and that was company A of the 31st Virginia Militia.

@Brian Glover both the colonists and the confederates seceded because they wanted to govern themselves and be left alone. Both subsequently defended their homes from foreign invaders. Both fought against armies who were trying to force them back under a ruler at gunpoint. The only difference is, one was successful and the other was not. When you lay both side by side, there really isn't much difference.

I find two respective Vice-Presidents have summed it up best: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." -Thomas Jefferson "Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. The colour of uniforms was also influenced by the particular region the wearer served in the case of the South. Grey was more common in the east, with forces such as the Army of Northern Virginia, whilst butternut was more commonly seen in the west - such as in the Trans-Mississippi Theatre, worn by forces such as Earl Van Dorn's Army of the West and Sterling Price's Army of Missouri. As mentioned, some Confederate units wore dark blue uniforms early on, at First Manassas some Union units actually wore grey uniforms, which also didn't help with the battlefield confusion.
