Why We Went to the Dark Side | Getting Out of Hybrid Travel Trailers

We got a ton of comments and messages when we sold our Hyrbid Travel Trailer so we made this video to discuss the main reasons why we decided to go over to the Dark Side.
That being said, we really loved our hybrid camper and the Jayco X23B in particular was a great model for us. That said, our family has gotten older and our experience is a lot more than what it was when we moved from a pop up to the hybrid, and that is the primary factor for us to move inour our new Rockwood 2706ws bunkhouse travel trailer.
For anybody who doesn't care to watch the video, the main reasons we decided to upgrade were:
1) Storage
2) Setup time
3) Family considerations
4) We can tow more now
5) Bigger tanks for more boondocking
6) Camping in more harsh weather conditions
We loved our hybrid, and if money wasn't an object, we would have one of those for great weather and our 2706ws for crazier weather. Heck, if money wasn't an object, we'd have an overland rooftop tent, a big class A with an offroad jeep, and maybe even our own campground. But for now, we love our new Rockwood and have been getting out all over the place to make memories with the ones that matter most, and THAT is #WhyWeWork! See you on the next adventure!

Thanks for hanging in there with us and sorry to all the folks who were disappointed that we made the jump. While we decided that the dark side was going to be best for us, we'll always have a huge soft spot for the hybrids because that's what really got the fire lit for us! Stick around, we still have tons of amazing adventures in the hopper!

The extra safety when we leave our TT sitting there and go exploring is also a nice benefit. We hope the video gave you some food for thought if nothing else-thanks for stopping by and leaving us a comment!

We freaken LOVE that place. We were there last year and even with the fires not too far from there it was still a great experience. Can't wait to take our newly purchased hybrid there sometime this year. We just upgraded from tent camping.

My family made the same progression through trailers that you did. We started with an 8’ box pop up but the wife didn’t like the fact there was no bathroom. Then we got a 19’ Rockwood Roland we loved but we struggled with the things you mentioned. Lugging in and out all of our supplies made it frustrating. We just got a 28’ Jayco bunkhouse and we love it.

I agree. You need the right tool for the job. I have 3 kids and as much as I want a compact overland rig....it doesn't work with 3 kids...not comfortably anyway. For us...at this time...I feel we need a bunkhouse travel trailer. Cargo room and no setup time is now a big selling point for us with 3 kids. We just did Yellowstone in a pop up truck camper and loved it....I had to do a lot of work though with loading and unloading though.

That’s basically where I was at. I absolutely loved our hybrid, but when you want to go cross country and stop over all the time, you want to be able to just pull off and use the trailer and then hit the road again in the morning and not be doing a bunch of exhausting setup/breakdown 10-15 times on a 10-day trip!!

Thank you so much for this video! We own a pop up and I have run the gamut from being sure I wanted a Runaway to a hybrid. My husband retires in a few years and I want something easy to tow for a lengthy tour of America, From a one nighter to spending a week in a national park.

Ok, well, found the update :( not sure how long after the pro/con on the hybrid was..I left a message there cuz I've been terrified and sick this morning after my husband bought a small hybrid last night suddenly. So...probably not great :/ dang it. Something different isn't financially optional especially being used for volunteer work. But, I'm super happy you guys were able to buy one that works for your family:)

No need to panic-we absolutely loved our hybrid and made so many amazing memories in that thing. It was perfect for where we were on our journey, what vehicle we had to tow with, our budget, and where we liked to camp. Even now, there are a lot of things that I miss about our hybrid. The main reason we changed was because we got a bigger truck so we had a lot more options than when we first bought, and we wanted to start doing a lot of extended length, multi-stop cross country trips instead of just the weekend trips we started out with eventually. I think you will still have a lot of amazing adventures in your new hybrid-have fun!

Like your videos man! We are weekend warriors too and just sold our pop up trailer. I thought I really wanted a hybrid but ended up getting a hardshell instead. It feels more like sleeping in a box but its worth it for the same reasons you mentioned, rain is not a big deal now, we can close windows to drown out noisy neighbors, and everything stays packed all the time so setup is about 15 mins at campsite. We're hoping to use the trailer until the kids get older, hopefully the 21ft will stay big enough for us. Either way, enjoy your camping!

I live in an area that has very strict rules regarding the length of travel trailers (max 25 feet) and I have a flexible number of children/family members who may come with (or may not!), which I think is really why I find the hybrids appealing. I need to buy an adequate tow vehicle first, but I appreciate hearing different opinions from actual lived experiences vs dealerships.

At about 9:00, you are standing in front of an Attitude rig. Do you have a Rockwood or the Attitude? We went to the dark side also. Still love seeing all the different hybrids out there, but every time I look at the reflectix and tin foil wrapping the beds, I giggle. That and the memories of my poor aching knees from climbing into and out of bed. Good video, great points. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

I just came here from Papa Drew's fb page, and this is the first video I have watched, so maybe you have answered these already, but are you full time and how do you school your kids? We are going full time in 2 years and have 2 kids we need to figure out schooling for. Either homeschool or cyber. Just curious how you do it.

'open the door and let your dog run free'...please don't be one of these kind of campers that let there dogs go off lease unsupervised. Besides, parks do have rules that dogs be kept under control at all times.

I think most people start with a pop up then learn that they really no storage. I loved our pop up and my family made great memories in that thing. Go go go. Make great family memories no matter how big or small your trailer is. Towing larger and larger rigs gets easy It’s parking that’s hard! Trees and rocks and limbs. I hope that at some point we can meet in person. My family loves camping except 1 he hates it. We live in northern CA in grass valley. So we live in the woods but prefer ocean and redwoods. If you ever decided to go further north hit me up! A cool weekend swapping recipes and rv talk sounds like fun. Have a safe trip.

+David Groves could not agree more!! As long as you’re out there making those memories and your rig works for you, then you’re doing it right! We love it up north-met each other at Humboldt State so the redwoods are one of our shared favorites. We might make a long trip up that way over the winter break this year! Will let you know! Would be super fun to have a meet up!!

Dark side? Look tents are for kids and a hybrid is just a fancier tent. Tents suck. One of my group of friends who rv with us has one and overheard his teenage daughter telling my teenage son that she had to avoid touching the sides of her tent walls during the rain otherwise just like a tent your all wet.

+John Copenhaver they call it Going over to the dark side in the hybrid groups because you don’t get blasted with sun in he morning like you do in the bunk ends. We always had condensation issues so we would get wet even when it wasn’t raining lol!
