Why we Watch Comfort Movies | Video Essay
In today's video, we just wanted to talk about the type of movies we watch when things feel a bit uncertain. This isn't really an essay, but more of a free-flow of thoughts we had about movies that sprang from this singular global event we are all living.
Stay safe out there!

1- I wish I could have put the whole clip of Sam's speech but I have to play it safe and keep it short.
2- The closed captioning is acting up. It will be synced as soon as we can.

What is your nostalgic, guilty pleasure or feel good movie?
“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
LotR is undoubtedly my panacea. Another world full of danger and courage. A movie about friendship and human triumph.
Prisoner of azkaban 100%
Spirited away because it gave me nightmares when I first watched it which I kinda miss because my dreams all surrealist now and I can't tell if they're supposed to be nightmares or not.
This video really made me feel good. I wasn't feeling awful, but it made me relax from some stress that I didn't even realize I was carrying. Now I want to watch one of my feel-good movies, probably Forrest Gump or something from Studio Ghibli. It really hit me hard, because you mentioned so many movies that I had forgotten I loved, and the kind of movie I want to make, that will touch people in a real way. Thank you for such a good video, with such good timing.
My comfort movie is Isle of Dogs it just makes me feel happy and comfortable
Batteries not included is a feel good movie for me. It features people going through tough times, but with the help of some small UFO robots from space, they all come together to make it through. It’s a movie that reminds me that no matter how much bad is out there in the world, the good always outweighs it.
Its great to think mcu movies will be nostalgic to kids today. Hell,i already have great memories from iron man 1,and it,s still recent.
I think The Dark Knight Rises is an overlooked movie. Its really inspiring the entire journey that bruce wayne goes through, he keeps falling and falling until he’s beneath the earth in hell. Yet he rises, comes back to gotham and inspires the city to fight. Its such an inspirational movie to me
To me, comfort movies remind me of a time when not only were times simpler, but so were the requirements of a good movie. I wasn't tainted by dull adult analytics, where a good movie had to have this and that. When watching I didn't keep in mind if the character development followed an enjoyable arc, if the themes were implemented in the story in a fresh and meaningful way, if the acting was immersive or if I could suspend my disbelief from the plotholes.
“It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. And what are we holding onto Sam? That there is some good in this world Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.”
Damn the monologue gets me every time
If we're sharing Gandalf quotes, I want to highlight one that is incredibly important right now:
I think I will use this advice and rewatch LOTR now.
If Screened's KZread Videos were Movies
Napoleon Dynamite, Warm Bodies, Good Will Hunting, and Devil Wears Prada are my jams.
I don’t remember the last time a video on this platform made me tear up. Than you for this.
Thanks for this. I never could put into words what to call or how those movies made me feel.
I've lost count on how many times I had to watch Shrek 2, Finding Nemo, or the LOTR series as a kid. As I grew up, the more I liked those movies even more.
