I try to remind my self that homeschooling my kids through a charter is better than my kids being out in traditional school.

This video was super informative. Thank you!! I appreciate that you mentioned the good and the beautiful and beautiful feet as I used both last year and am making the switch to charter and changing some curriculum, but would love to keep elements of these two curricula as we have time.

I ran a homeschool pod during COVID(5 children grades kindergarten,4th,5th,6th). After 2 years of homeschooling after COVID, we stopped to allow the kids to have a public school experience with lots of children to interact with. After 2 years of poor performing schools, we decided to enroll our kids in Valley Oaks Charter School. We still wanted a social experience , but also the freedom to choose our own materials. We haven’t started yet but this school really offers so much. I hope it is a good fit. It sounds a lot like your charter school. Thanks for the information.

We also homeschool with a charter, we're in central Cali though! but we've had a bit of a different experience, they are so much more relaxed, there are no set boundaries except for religious content and they even buy from the good and the beautiful things like manipulatives and readers. my favorite part is that they only ask for one work sample each month, for example one month math, the next month LA. I believe they are in Socal too if you're interested!

I’ll look into it!! Thank you! We are thinking about changing schools because ours is moving more to a home study program and less of a homeschool program so it’s not going to be what we want eventually!

We homeschool through a charter for those same reasons. Our school is a bit more relaxed. We turn in just one subject every 20 days. Our HST is a big part of why it works so well with us. I feel like they can make it or break it. The funding is a main reason why we continue with the charter! 😃

@@homeschoolatheart definitely! It’s nice to see more families like us as well. My friends charter requires one sample from each subject every single week. I think that’s overkill. Plus, she’s required to plan her entire year out before the first day of school. I don’t think a rigid schedule like that would work for us.

I am wondering if you have to return non-consumable items to your charter? We just got accepted into one and it honestly seems like a major hassle especially since a majority of the resources I would be purchasing would be for all my children throughout all the years...

  • @homeschoolatheart

We keep them. Currently our school only wants back technology items… computers, iPads, Osmo products, things like that. Before that though, they kept a record of what we had and it could be used for as long as we had kids that could benefit from it, then we would return it when we were truly done with it

The school I’m using is called Sage Oak! They have both a full homeschool program (that’s what we use) and one that would have a person teaching your child online, so that could be helpful! You can go to sageoak.education to fill out an application! There are also others in the area… Sky Mountain, Gorman, Inland Leaders, Excelsior and a lot more!

I don’t understand how seasoned homeschoolers swear you can homeschool on a dime Lol Especially with multiple children! I’ve been in this journey since Covid hit and schools began adding gender discussions into the curriculum. But I feel stuck! Homeschool pods are expensive!! Not to mention fancy extracurricular activities such as sports, ballet, music lessons, field trips. I just haven’t been able to do any of that in these few years. So I’m stressing out about the dilema of joining a charter. I’m afraid of the extra work load my kids will have, I’m scared to lose the freedom but I also feel the need of some accountability since my son is entering 8th grade and soon to be a high schooler. I think he needs more structure and socializing. My 5 year old is also begging me to go to school. Neither of them are vaccinated so with that, and the climate in public schools, homeschooling is my only option

Try a charter school and if you don't like it, you can always pull your kids out. You can opt out of sex education as well. The instructional funds the charter school gives you is amazing and you can put your kids in elective classes with those funds. That's a wonderful way to socialize your kids.

I just don't like all the reporting to the superving teachers with utilitizing a Charter such as attendance, work samples, and state testing. It's stressful at times. Our children's "homescool" charter said that if we don't do state testing, they will get kicked out. Their supervising teacher wants work samples that are on grade level and state standard for that time of the year. They want our children to learn certain grade level concepts by a certain time. To me, this is not homeschooling. This feels more like public school at home, which it is. Next school year, we may just homeschool independently or private school. I don't need the extra stress.
