Don't stop reading to your children! Of course, children should learn to read independently. But share reading has many benefits, even for kids who decode accurately. It can broaden reading horizons. It’s an opportunity to have deep, intellectual discussions. And it sends a message about the value you place on reading.

I think it is more reading with expression, passion and in character. Your readings with joy and energy makes your kids more interested in reading. I have been reading to my kid since she was in her mother's womb. I read every morning and every night. When going places in the car, we play audio books for her. Now she is three she can read by herself but still enjoys when we read to her. This young lady comes to my bedroom with a pile of books as soon as she wakes up.

So true! Reading to our kids is a great way to create bond with them and promote interest in learning.

As an ESL teacher, I have seen many cases when the 5th grade English Learners decode but could not enjoy and understand what they were reading. Thank you for sharing this. I will bring more culturally relevantes reading to them and spend more time modeling and helping them make connections ❤️

Great points and delivered in a pleasant manner. My favourite time of the day is a story time with my 2 boys. There are 3 and 6, but I hope I can read to them for many years to come. Reading aloud really is a special time.

Very well put, and SO true! I can also attest to the power of reading aloud and the fact that often those kids who don't like reading themselves can be absolutely spell-bound by a well read story. I'm going to add some tips to maximise the magic of the reading experience for anyone new to this: Beware of ambient noise(major story killer!), delivery matters(If you're not into it, why would they be?) and particularly for younger readers, involve them(don't just stick to the script on the page - ask questions, think aloud, react to the images, etc.) :)

Thank you Rebecca! I used to teach 7th grade language arts in an inner city school and my students LOVED it when I read to them. This description of how reading aloud to kids is different from them reading on their own is spot on..it's the best explanation I've ever heard. Great talk and thank you!

Absolutely delightful and adorable, I just bought my nephew several book sets and it was not cheap. Kids don’t need to be playing video games and to be influenced by social media streamers. This is such a wonderful way to bring they’re beloved family together and help them grow, thank you for this presentation that articulates emotions with thoughtfulness of one-another. I remember having my dad read Harry Potter to me and it was a magic world..

When I was a child my mother would read to me at night, and my wife and I read to our children. I have family members who put their kids in front of the TV and some of children had major problems. Reading to your children will not guarantee success, but it will always be remembered by them.

Amazing presentation and totally agree with you.

This is why lock-downs going on too long has been a deficit for reading development. God bless the teachers and parents who continue to do read alouds! With teens we have found reading the book that inspired a movie to be a good way to foster discussion with them on comparing the book vs. the movie.

Wow, she’s amazing!!!!! I just realized after listening to her, I had really horrible teachers that weren’t patient with me , parents that NEVER read to me or helped me with my homework & reading.. I just couldn’t get into a book, couldn’t understand and worried about how i sound when reading out loud... It messed me up and have insecurities about it....HOWEVER, I will never fail my child like my past teachers & parents did to me when I was kid ....

Simply amazing!!

I remember our teacher reading aloud a story and I was sad and my eyes filled with tears. ( Highlight is that I was 16 that time) But her voice was deep.

As a parent we can build deep relationship or chemistry between parents and children .

Absolutely impressive! I can't wait to practice more aloud reading with my students in class!

It is a good exclusive guide for teaching children to read minus the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my mate at last got cool results with it.

My mom never read to me as a kid and I really do have trouble bringing my book to life when I read. Thank you! I'm a soon-to-be- mother who just learned the importance of reading to my kid, even when they're not such a "kid" anymore 🙏

Loved it!

Remember our sixth grade teacher Mrs. Imray read the Harry Potter books to us. What was even more a treat is she was born in the UK. Not only that she did an amazing job with different voices of the characters. It was incredible how she was able to bring the story to life for us. So amazing that you could almost hear a pin drop when we enter a tense situation reaching a gut wrenching climax (suspenseful pause) and then resolution. I am forever grateful for that type of experience in my life. Bless teachers who continue to promote this style of education.

Thankful for this, gives me the insight to reading to kids, that I would never have known.

Amazing speech, Read Aloud gives child a special kind of access, says Rebecca Bellingham. Child understand what is real reading about, they could imagine it. Children may face difficulty in understanding the words and vocabulary in a book, where they never get to know what were they been reading. We teachers and parents do the decoding work and make children free to think, to imagine the story and be a part of it. Reading aloud gives us chance to look up, which comes up with reading and talking together. I agree with Rebecca, where she says she believes that reading aloud builds an opportunity to connect and talk together inconsistent in meaningful ways, where children don’t only love reading, but where this gives them opportunities to learn think deeply.

Rebecca, This was an amazing presentation. Early literacy skills should be reinforced by parents at all time. Reading aloud to children allows parents to create a strong bond between them that they don't even realize they are doing. Many parents worry that because they do not speak "English", they are unable to partake in the act of read aloud activities with their children; on the contrary! Parents can read to their children in their native language and share stories just the same. I loved how you shared a brief description on the different books that children are required to read at school. There are so many books and stories that open a whole world of imaginative travel for children that allow them to expand their knowledge. Books and stories allow the reader to escape into unknown worlds of wonder and further expand their creativity. Parents can introduce all of these amazing storytelling techniques and reading formats by modeling proper word decoding and segmenting. Great presentation!

There are many components to studying easily . A place I found that succeeds in merging these is the Pronto Learner Compendium (google it if you're interested) definately the most useful resource i've heard of. Look at the great information .

yes, thank you! it's so important and i'm so lucky that my dad always read to me until 6th or 7th grade, which made me love reading books. my primary school teachers also read a lot to us and i'm just so thankful for it. without my dad and them i don't know if i would have this love for books that i have now..

I'm hoping that this will happen with our Tohono O'odham stories.

Excellent speech, my mom never did that when i was a kid, besides where i live we've never had a bookstore or library. when i grew up i realized that i was a little behind my friends in terms of education and thats when it hit me i wasn't having the right education just bc i was poor ,it's difficult to do something or have a good education and u don't have nothing to support u or something simple like have teaches. today im helping my little brother with his reading skills by reading e-books for him, anyway does anyone has any children's book recommendations, like the type of book she was reading in the beginning, if so write them down below

Can anyone share the books she mentioned?

I read to my 9 and 11 year old every night and every day. They BEG me to keep reading, even if my throat is scratchy and my voice is cracking.

Reading aloud needs to continue, even into adulthood. Read together as a couple. Choose a book and read it aloud, short stories, articles,poetry, how to books. This can be done at dinner or for a half an hour after. Singles need to read older literature aloud, it was meant to be read aloud. It was entertainment. Reading slows the pace of life, calms, helps us learn to listen carefully to one another. Take turns to read aloud, or just listen to the words as you say them aloud. There is a cadence, an accent, a color in the words. Bring reading back to the center of your life. You’ll find that you are more able to concentrate, less alone (even within the bustle of a family), and happier.

I've always has anxiety when reading aloud because our high school teacher would basically make us read textbooks out loud to the class as punishment and the class would snigger and laugh at the victim when they struggled. I do read to my 5 month old baby and will continue to do so but I really don't have the charisma that people like Rebecca

wow i like the idea when we read to kids e take the burden of decoding and difficult vocab fro the kids and allow them to imaging and process the story wow, i never know this.

I teach 1st grade and I read to them several times a day. A friend asked me if that wasn’t a waste of time, my heart hurt. I’m trying to teach these babies how to do something really hard. Why not show them the reward at the end?

Daniel, I cannot recommend highly enough The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease. His book covers all the research and methodologies in addition to having a treasury of suggested titles for you to enjoy with your child. Please start there!

We started using this reading guideline “Wamzοzο Loli” (Google it) over a year. My daughter is constantly improving her reading capabilities up to now. She now reads beginning chapter books and is a splendid speller. She writes sentences and some short stories as well.

Erin, thank you for sharing your method of teaching reading using the "fetching loli only". I had not heard of it prior to your comment and decided to google it as you suggested. I currently work as a pre-kindergarten paraprofessional, and although we teach very basic words to begin their introduction to early literacy skills, this reading guideline seems very resourceful for the classroom! I watched a video on someone who made a book with their class and has them write a sentence using the "word of the week" they had learned and drawing a simple picture to describe the sentence. I would love to know how you use this method, and what activities you create to engage your daughter to love reading so much? Thank you for sharing!

But sometimes reading can kill your own imagination..just like visiting and wordering at a building created by another..instead of looking at your own possibilities☺
