Why we ride motorbikes: a midlife crisis solution!︱Cross Training Adventure

This vid is getting old now but it's still fun! Why we ride motorbikes. Cruisers and Harleys vs dirt bikes, adventure bikes and trials bikes? This video explains how to age recklessly, remain emotionally immature and be a dirty old man but not get arrested. Above all it explains why we ride motorbikes, and why turning 50 is no excuse to wimp out of the adventure that is motorbike riding (apologies to cruiser and Harley Davidson riders, this vid is just having a dig at mates who ride those beasts!). So many riders say that it's about so much more than dirt riding - it's helped with depression, anxiety, life direction and midlife crisis. But what is it exactly? A midlife crisis is a transition of identity and self-confidence that can occur in middle-aged individuals, typically 45-64 years old and some reckon motorbike riding helps. It is described as a psychological crisis brought about by events that highlight a person's growing age, inevitable mortality, and possibly shortcomings of accomplishments in life unless you ride lol). Midlife crisis, can result in feelings of depression, remorse, and anxiety, or the desire to achieve youthfulness or make drastic changes to their current lifestyle. Who came up with the expression? What else? Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like doing seriously critical reviews. Manufacturers make some really bad mistakes. and there is a lot of dodgy crap being sold out there. Instead of glowing dual sport reviews for kickbacks or free product, we will try to keep the bastards honest. So subscribe. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia... with occasional detours to places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Romania and Canada. This is one of our three channels, there's also a Cross Training Trials channel, and a Cross Training Enduro channel. All three are equally dodgy. We are the 27th most watched dirt channel in Uzbekistan. We have won the polished turd award five years in a row. And we have a world record 25 class action lawsuits for inaccurate information. We think the whole motorbike scene is getting too commercial. So called dual sport riding reviews are just glossy ads nowadays. The term midlife crisis was coined by Elliott Jaques in 1965. More modern research has shown midlife crisis is not a phase that most middle-aged people actually experience, and some have questioned the existence of this phenomenon but if you ride motorbikes it doesn't matter, hey? Everyone is trying to sell you stuff you don't need, convince you to buy the latest model with anodized coffee cup holders for your trips to the coffee shop. Of course if you are cashed up and into bling, go for it. All we are saying is there's also the budget option for adventure riding. And it won't hold you back. Why? We reckon it's 80% the rider and 20% the bike. So the Cross Training Adventure focus is just get out there and have fun on two wheels. Instead of obsessing over the latest blinged out Beemer, which tyres to fit or spending a fortune on your suspension or billet alloy gas cap. So most of our adventure ridingvids will feature the much loved bush pig, the Suzuki DR650. And we've done a 10 part series on how to unleash the mighty beast that lurks within.

Lifetime supporter here🙋🏻‍♂️ Just wanted to come back to the video that got me into riding in 2019. I started riding so much I couldn’t find enough guys that ride, I started racing. I’m now currently on track to win my local series championship. Time of my life! And I still practice my slow stuff right in my small yard. If anyone reading this wants to change your life. Get a dirtbike and watch the how to series these guys put on. The videos taught me ALMOST everything I know. My truck might be a bit rusty & outdated. But dirtbike is brand spanking new😂And the yard grass a little tall, laundry needs done too. My priorities have shifted. Thanks Berry(not sure of spelling)

I turned 40 last year and bought a Versys for my mid-life crisis birthday present. I haven't had this much fun in years! BUT!!! I was a member of ADV before I even purchased a bike because the dirt is what I am drawn to. I don't intend to die on a bike, but I intend to push my adrenal glands to the limits. My greatest fear is lying on my deathbed and thinking.... "I wish I had...." Thank you sir for posting a video to wake up as many as you can to the potential of living instead of dying.

As a youngster around 13, I’d ride the fields and in our woods (privileged by tolerance) and it was great to see you guys forging through the woods and ‘terrain’. More power than old Villiers engined bikes but it’s all in the experience at the now point. Nice vid and diverse comments / threads -

Been knocking items off my bucket list since I was 12.... I retire within the next 24 months, and after I insight building the cabin I’ve already started on my Alaskan property, I will drive through the Americas, my only unsolved question is will I take that whole trip on a DRZ, or will I do soin a renovated school bus and have a DRZ strapped to the back that will be used regularly for fun and getting around while the bus stays parked most the time?

Im 19 years old (my dr650 is too) riding for 3 years now... im planning to do it for the next 60 years too. Riding a motorcycle is the only way for me to explore the world and exploring the world is the only way for me to find the sense of life. Thats why riding keeps the depressions away from me. I told myself there is no reason to be depressed or think about siucide as long as you havent seen the world and found out what the sense of life is. Because seeing new places, experiencing other cultures and ways to live makes you wiser in every way, just by watching with the own eyes. Idk how it works but it's a fact for me and thats why I will travel the world on bike. Thats my reason to ride. Keep on riding

it is the mundane people who came up with the whole midlife crisis idea. the truth often is it is just at that point a lot of us can finally afford nice toys we always wanted. nobody suddenly wakes up at midpoint of their life and thinks 'hey i think i will try something i never cared about before'. no they wake up and think 'at last i can buy that toy i always wanted but put off buying because i had to shell out money for family and kids for all these years'. lots return to their love they had as youths because they now have the means to do so without putting their families in a bind. when red foreman (that 70's show) bought that corvette it was because he could finally afford what he had always wanted, not because he was going through some sort of crisis. i object to the term crisis anyway. about 10 years ago i returned to riding a motorcycle after years away from it. i am now 63 and took some time off from it due to family but i filled the empty space with atv's so i was not exactly sitting on my rump on the sofa all that time. awesome video man.

Hello from Austin, Texas. I'm 54. Been riding since I was 12 yrs old and have the scars to prove it. For cruising I hop on my Stryker, if I am feeling a little wild, I jump on my FZ-09, and 2 weeks ago I picked up a WR250R and love it. I thought I had all bases covered until I watched this video and saw you guys having fun on trials bikes. I used to make up trials courses and ride them on an orange, 1975 DT100. Great video, I probably ride more now than ever before. I know what they mean when they say "Live to Ride". Many great memories and I am hoping to continue to make more. Great video and thanks for sharing.

Luv it! But I envy you guys in your 50s. I just passed my 70th and all I did was a leisurely ride to to Key West, FL and then made the trip back (to Madison, WI) in two days. I did the desert stuff in Utah, Nevada, Idaho and California but that was ca. 50 years ago. Next year: West Coast of U.S. via Canada. Then another out of the way route to get home. I'll just keep on riding until I get old.

I wish there was a way to like this video more than once as your explanation of adventure riding is perfect! Hope to see you out on the trails one day ;) My stable is a 300 exc and 1190 Adventure R, both see equally as much dirt and the 1190 a little less difficult terrain. 57, my first bike was a 75 Yamaha DT 125, worked all summer in tobacco fields to get it. Had many bikes since, even rode on tank trails around Mt. Fuji. My first real street bike was and still is a 2015 Triumph 800xcx. It's a great bike, but just isn't a "dirt bike". Well I retired in Oct of last year, I've been blessed throughout my life. Don't get me wrong, I worked hard and was able to get a KTM 690 r. It's a blast to ride, just a twist of the wrist and I'm at the top of that whooped out hill. Never knew that I missed it so much. 👍👍👍👍👍 God speed ✌. Great video and it's good to know that I'm not the only one that feels that way.
