Why we're DRYING OFF the GOATS | KEEPING DAIRY GOATS | PERMACULTURE FOOD FOREST FARM & MARKET GARDEN

Originally filmed for our Patreon members, this short video looks into why we are purposefully reducing the milk that our dairy goats produce, a term called drying off. We have a quick look at the daily morning milking routine before starting a conversation on our reasons to reduce the milk.
We have been drinking our own goats milk for over three years and we're going to miss having the fresh, raw milk and the opportunity to make cheese and kefir, but if we want to have goat kids next year (to grow our herd) we need to dry of the goats. We chat all about how we are drying off the goats, why we are and what we're going to miss, though at the same time we outline some of the responsibilities that home dairying brings to our lives and how drying off gives not only the goats a rest but the farmer too.
About Tap o' Noth Farm:
Hi, we're James and Rosa! Welcome to Tap o' Noth Farm, a quarter acre Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) market garden and 8 acre permaculture designed forest garden farm/homestead in Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland. We practice home scale to small farm scale agroforestry and regenerative agriculture methods to produce organic fruit and vegetables, raise dairy goats for all our raw milk needs, Shetland sheep and geese to graze our silvopasture and coppice systems and laying hens, moved around in a Chickshaw, for an abundance of eggs.
Our videos aren't 'how to's' - more videos to give a glimpse into our lifestyle and hopefully inspire you to bring aspects of what you see into your own life.

If you're looking for even more content from James and Rosa then you can become a patron of Tap Farm. It takes James between 5-10 hrs to edit our vlogs, let alone the time it takes to film and farm at the same time! Your support will aid us greatly in producing our FARMVLOGS, enabling us to take the time needed to craft a beautiful film and to help fund the licences needed for the vlog soundtrack. We will list your name at the end of each vlog episode so everyone knows how brilliant you are! We will also keep you updated on our farm work/life by posting exclusive video content that is not available on KZread such as FARMVLOG outtakes, behind the scenes footage, hints & tips and more in depth videos discussing the many permaculture systems to be found on the farm PLUS the odd photo from Rosa and James.

@@TapoNothFarm Thank you. I am enjoying very much. My husband and I had a homestead from 1967 until 2009. We had dairy goats and all the usual barnyard lot. Miss it dearly. And my husband too gone 4 years now. I watch several you tube channels and find yours "a keeper". And yes... sometimes you and your "lovely ladies" just need a respite... it is a wise and healthy choice for all. Blessings 😊🌻🐛

We added the billy to ours about a month ago and two that we were still milking are drying them selves up slowly, which is a sign they are pregnant ...same happened last year. I leave the kids with the mamas during the day until she wean them off but separate at night which helps. We have two jerseys too so they complement each other in the milk production and we are never without milk. Sorry for the dislike( it was on the screen as I opened and tapped accidentally) good luck with yours! Xx

Again another topic that'll I'll be enjoying following. I soak my wheat and barley and let it forment slightly before I feed it to my chickens. I do this because I understand it helps release more of the nutrients in the and aids the digestion. Would that work with your goats?

Lovely video! You can also ‘share’ milk with their kids a bit sooner than 12 weeks: We put kids in a stall at night( next to mum ) when they were 6 weeks old and took the morning milk only. Mama goat had plenty left to feed her kids during the day. Seemed to work fine and not too taxing on goats or humans 😉

@@palco23 not true. We can easily get hold of non-GMO, organic alfalfa here. We've been able to get it easily when we lived near the South Coast of England, the Middle of Britain and here in the North of Scotland, its really not difficult. We can even grow it ourselves up here. We looked into it and had no problem finding organic seed.
