Thanks for your informative videos! My wife and I plus two kids and maybe my teenage nephew for a little bit, plan to go on the road for a year and I will be starting from nothing (no RV). I was at first considering a travel trailer but lately am leaning towards a lighter 5th wheel pulling with a Ram 3500 Diesel. I also watched your Rasberry Pi and google maps videos. I’m so glad you put this info out here for those of us that are considering doing exactly what you and Joan are doing. I love your rv and as of now we have a tag along 26 ft. In length but I really am wanting to upgrade to something larger. My hubs is 6ft 4” so I would really like a king size bed and definitely a fifth wheel has more headroom all the way through. I love your channel and since we’re in SC I’m really into some of your campgrounds that y’all have visited here. I am into the larger, quieter camp spots with shade. I hope you and Joan continue to love rving for years to come. Have fun and be safe out there!!

I bought a used 23 foot used trailer, it's a nice start for me for vacations and weekends for now it also allows me to see what works and what doesn't without spending too much money, I removed those hideous window treatments and replace them with curtains, reupholstered the dinette cushions and I'm going to paint this spring, no major upgrades. I do know that when I go full time the trailer may not work but again will use it for a while to see what style of traveling I will be doing. I spoke to a couple one time at a rv show who does the wheel spoke method that you and you wife do and I thought that was a neat idea. Safe travels!

Thank you Jerry for your videos and sharing your experience. You always have good information and I've learned a lot from you. I'm in my second year of owning an RV. Me and my wife love the parks in Texas and are starting to adventure out into neighboring states. We currently have a 32 foot travel trailer and now thinking in the near future to upgrading top a 5th wheel. This is an excellent video on comparing the different types of RV's. Thanks again.

Thank you for sharing all of the reasons why you chose your 5th Wheel. I especially like your comparison between the Class A and the 5th Wheel. For me my travel trailer and Ford Explorer give me mobility since I can unhitch the Explorer. The travel trailer is only 23 feet which is great for state and national parks. I'll have to watch some of your videos on why you upgraded and changed different parts of your 5th Wheel. I know that a lot of people are deciding to take out the dinette area and install a workstation like you did. Excellent video!

Thanks for the kind comment Salvatore. With 40 feet we run into places we don’t fit. Good news is there’s usually something close by that allows us to tour the area. We’re very casual so a dinette wasn’t a must. I had to have an office since I’m working on the road and this space was an easy to fit for desk, monitors, etc. I have plans to remove and replace with a custom desk/workspace. Maybe a video this Spring. A number of mods, most simple, but there’s a big one on the kitchen upgrade. Hope you get a chance to watch. Safe travels, Jerry...

A very long time ago I thought of traveling this beautiful country via a Class A RV. Now that we have a travel trailer toy hauler we still want to see this beautiful country but with a fifth wheel camper. I do love to ride my motorcycle so of course it will be a toy hauler. We like that their are so many options for a toy hauler fifth wheel vs a toy hauler drivable rv that is affordable. Thank you for sharing and safe travels.

Great info Jerry, we have a travel trailer right now parked at a seasonal site and we will want to someday upgrade to a 5th wheel. We live on the East coast of Canada and do wish to travel through the USA in the winter months when we retire which leaves us a few years to pick the right 5th wheel. Thank you and enjoy your week.

My wife and I have been full time a year and a half. When we started this adventure we looked at all the avenues. For us we ended up with a 30 ft travel trailer that has opposing slideouts for a nice living room. It has served us well. I have a 2500 GMC diesel pickup with a cap on the back. That has served as storage and also an "away" camper for a weekend getaway. We will be looking for a 5th wheel this summer as we would like to have more "AIR" the travel trailer has lower ceilings and that gives a much smaller feel to the "home" We experience more problems with condensation due to the lower air volume inside. Windows are also smaller in most travel trailer. We, like you want that home feeling. We will be giving up our pickup cap camper but I think we will just buy a nice instant up tent and cots for our away excursions. Very nice video .. agree with most all you said .. and the rest is just personal preference ! Thanks and subscribed.

Hi Kevin, both are good options. It’s just that floor plan thing. We found this one, a 40ft couples floor plan and just couldn’t walk away from it. We looked at a bunch and knew this one was it the minute we walked in the door. A little over 4 years later, we’ve added a few modifications to make long trips more enjoyable. Great video. thanks for sharing. these are the same factors we considered when looking at our 5th wheel. i would love a class a diesel pusher, and hope to be able to afford it someday, but right now, our mid bunk 5er and ram cummins is a great set up for us. i do have dually envy though! would love to upgrade the SRW to a dually, but not for a couple of years yet!

Very nice interior! Love what you did with the space. Looks so warm and inviting! RV Leatherette! LOL! To funny (and so true). Great purchase points. Our main reasons why we purchase our Grand Design Fifth Wheel was Interior, Space, Storage, Residential Fridge, Tow vehicle mobility, and the feeling of a residential apartment. Small tiny living for us. Way cheaper to live and we can pretty much change out our backyard whenever we feel like it know. If you don't like your neighbors, now you can just move. LOL! Thanks for sharing. I know I keep saying it, but I'm really glad we found your channel. Your talking style is very on point and you do it with class! Have a Glamperrific Day! 👍❤️🌈😀🌈

We had a class C years ago when our boys were young. They grew out of wanting to spend time with us so we sold it. We are now retired with grandsons and will be picking up our Grand Design 5th wheel bunk house in a week or two. We are looking forward to hitting the road. We are contemplating selling everything and going full time.

Your mileage is impressive. We're on our first trailer, a 27' bunkhouse that's about 5800 lbs. Pulling it with a tow-ready F150 (for tow vehicle shamers, it is capable of towing more) we get about 14.5 MPG, in hills.

That’s not bad for a F150 and you’re well within the tow limits. Our daughter and her husband pull a 30’ with their F150. At 8,000 lbs, they have to slow a little on those long mountain climbs, but it manages rather well. When you step up to a heavy 5th wheel, a big gas V10 will work, but it just doesn’t have the torque a diesel provides.

New to your channel. Good reasons given for the fifth wheel. It looks very comfortable. I'm 64 (retired) and two years out from full time RVing. My wife will work till 60. We also have a daughter getting married in 2020. May I ask your ages, if I'm being too personal. I'll be checking out your past videos for inspiration. Take care and be safe.

Nothing to hide. 64. We pulled the travel cord almost 5 years ago. Sold part of the business and aligned clients that allows me to work remotely. No retirement planned. Having to much fun helping clients grow their business. Kids are off raising their family. We just need the occasional grand kid fix. Glad you found the channel. Jerry...

The reasons you listed are the same ones we had and came to the same conclusion. We bought a 42 foot 5th wheel and F350 dually, we have a few business things to wrap up this year but we plan to hit the road fulltime in January 2020. We did have a few requirements when picking our 5th wheel... 1. Must be rated for fulltime use 2. Must be able to access the bathroom without opening slides 3. Must be able to open fridge, and get to bed without opening slides 4. Must have an island and pantry Thanks for your KZread video

We have done about the same thing. We bought a 40' fifth wheel to live in while we remodeled our house. We replaced the cheap furniture with residential, added roll outs in the pantry. The down side is that it only has a bed for two but no one could sleep on the hide-a-bed. We have a blow up mattress for guests. We now travel a lot and it is wonderful.

Hi Lawrence. We started with the blow up. Not convenient at all. It took 4 or 5 months till we found a store that specialized in apartment furniture. The trick was finding something that would fit through a 29” door. We found the sofa in the video and it has a very comfortable queen sleeper. We’ve started on the rollouts. Makes tight storage much nicer.

Thank you for your videos. One item I would add to your list is fueling. I make it a habit to fuel my truck the day before a travel day. It's much easier when I just have the truck to run out to any gas station to fuel up and be ready to get on the road the next day.

As soon as I get camp set up I go fill up with fuel if possible. At one of the campsites we used to frequent a flash flood hit the campground. I don't want to be caught looking for another campsite with 1/4 tank of fuel.

Hi awesome video. My wife and I just retired and plan to hit the road next year. I am doing all the research I can till then . I am planning on getting an Artic fox 28c footer . After reading comments I get a little confused. I would like a fifth wheel , but having the truck bed with a camper makes sense for extra storage . I have been told that with a bumper pull trailer even with sway bars you will feel it swaying when 18 wheelers rush by , and that a fifth wheel is more stable with very little swaying. Second, I know I am going to get hit on this , but I am looking at a F250 gas engine to pull about 12k . I have read that the newer Diesels are so expensive , and maintenance and repairs are not cheap plus they have so much more extra emissions components that make them less reliable then the older models , so I just dont want any truck problems . Yes I know diesel will give more torque and better mileage then a gas engine . I just need something that is the most practical solution with a reliable truck that will not cost an arm an a leg to fix .

Hi Joe. The diesel vs gas maintenance debate is mostly FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt). There's always a story or two that comes up around the campfire. Valid, but just one of those bad luck things with any vehicle. The only maintenance we've had since Oct 2014 is oil changes, 1 fuel filter change (no problem, just recommended time frame) and two front tires. Will be adding 4 back tire later this year. That's it. Runs like a top, great pulling capacity. The only downside is the ride. It's a heavy duty truck set up to handle very heavy loads so ride suffers without the 5th wheel on board. That's ok, getting there safe is the main deal. We were coming back from north Georgia today. Passed a guy hauling a 30 foot TT and he was all over the road. Hope he makes it. Sway can be an issue that is minimized with a 5th wheel. There are some very good anti sway products for TT. Hit the forums to see what others are using. Hensley has one, a bit pricey, but many are talking it up. The new F250 Super Duty with the 6.7 TD is around 16k to 17k in capacity depending on features. Personally, I like about 25% to 30% margin in my capacity over load. We've traveled with gasers towing. During a long mountain stretch, they have to work it. We cruise up a 6 mile, 8% grade with ease and never break 2200 RPM. Given the options, I'll prefer the diesel.

we went from a 454 a 6.0 GMC gas to a 6.7 diesel. the improved mileage was beyond words. then the power difference. hills that used to bog us down to 40 mph we're doing at 65mph now and still getting better mileage. the downside is the cost of the diesel and maintenance. However with the money we save on fuel and not jamming up traffic behind us we are more than happy.at video thanks for sharing.

Hi Stan. Big difference in power and mileage. Agree, oil changes are a little more plus a fuel filter every 10k miles. Great to breeze up those mountain roads.

I was originally thinking I wanted a class A because I will be going out as a solo female and the idea of being able to get up and drive out if I didn't feel safe sounded good, but the issue was I would have to disconnect and reconnect every time I wanted to back up. Also, I have heard from so many that Class A and C's are so much harder to drive than 5th wheels are to tow. My parents lived full time for over 30 years in their 5th wheel, and I have decided to go the same route. My goals are to go from one beach front property to the next and to stay at each one for a while before moving on. Right now a month sounds very cool! We will see how that pans out, but the idea as an apartment dweller to be able to hook up and move if I don't like my neighbors sounds divine!

HI Sally. Pros and cons for each for sure. We stay for weeks to a month per stop. Hard to beat the foot print for a 5th wheel. WE know others who move around much more and the A or C is a better option with quicker set up and tear down. Wish you the best in you new purchase.

My wife and I are in the process of getting a new fifth wheel toy hauler so we can load our Harley's and travel the country. We too plan doing the spoke and wheel type of traveling you mentioned. We have seven kids between us and our youngest is graduating this May and leaving for the Marines in June we will be free to go then. We have been planning this for the last 15 years and we too came to the same conclusion that a fifth wheel was the key being able to park it and still have the truck & our bike to travel is the best option for us. We just bought a brand new Chevy Duramax Turbo Diesel HD 3500 4x4 for the task of hauling yesterday. We were able to negotiate a awesome deal so we opted for a service plan that covers everything bumper to bumper for 6 years unlimited miles it even includes a loaner truck should ours need to go in for repairs it was worth it for us just for the peace of mind. We have traveled the western part of the United states from our home in Colorado on our Harley's and we are looking forward to seeing the eastern part of the country. Safe Traveles and God Bless.

I opted for a pull behind that is built like a fiver with the rear raised. My decision was based on a full time lifestyle and storage is king. So my tow vehicle is a Dodge Ram Megacab. The rear seat is folded down and full. There is a cap over the bed with two layers of roll out so it is full as well. The storage basement is the same as on a fiver. However the rear trunk is much larger a huge space compared to the front compartment on a fiver. Just my choice.

don't forget a tow trailer affords you storage in a pickup with a shell, for things like tools, bicycles, skis, etc for those side trips. Downside is you loose 3' off the full length for the tongue of the trailer... as compared to a 5th wheel, which actually overlaps the truck possibly giving you extra 6' additional living length for the same tow length you have including the tow vehicle... also 5th wheel rigs do short cut cornering when towed... watch those curbs... i.e. they track inside the tow rig wheel base more than a tow trailer. benefits to all, drawbacks to all! Like a pair of shoes... how do they fit for the purpose you want! 1st.. figure your purpose! Happy travels!

Thanks Terry. Our last stays from Cleveland, OH south was in Georgetown, KY to see the Ark, couple nights in Bristol, TN to see the Birth Place of Country Music. If you don't mind this stint on I75, we had 10 days in Piegon Forge, TN at River Plantation RV Resort. Also Mama Gerties Campground in Asheville. One of our favorites, plus Asheville and the area is so much fun with great things to see our do. If you make it close to Charleston, SC go to James Island Campground. We love this area and the coastal food is awesome. Hope this helps.

Thanks much. Very few truck mods. I have a nice Kenwood player installed. Thought I could used for nav....nope. We bought a nice 8 inch Samsung tablet and run Google maps. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but we like it. Here’s why kzread.info/dash/bejne/in-jlcGvntHJo8Y.html. We also added a Hensley Trailer Saver hitch after year 2. We found the really bad roads from construction or just poorly maintained were beating us to death. The Hensley smooths out the sharp shears experienced. Expensive, but worth it. Here’s more about the Hensley kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXmY28yudKTSfps.html. Last item was air bags. I held out on this one for a while, but wish I hadn’t. So nice to travel on the road, run up on several miles of rough road, then add or remove air to improve the ride. If you’re considering a 5th wheel, just remember the truck is pulling a heavy, long RV, and it rides like a heavy duty truck. Haven’t added aux fuel tank yet. Thinking about a 40 gal when we head west this fall. We like traveling in daylight. Lights on the truck, front and back work fine. Bottom line, tunes and nav were not truck specific. Hitch and bags were really the only items to improve the towing experience. Jerry..

Thank you, Sir, for your video! It's very informative and quite helpful. Someday, my wife and I will travel the US as well and see the sights while we're still strong and able. I'm certainly leaning more towards a fifth wheel. Originally, a 40 footer or a 40+ footer or even bigger. But, during my research, I found out a 35 footer is more accepted size when visiting National Parks or State Parks. Also, when it comes to trucks, I'm leaning more towards the GMC 3500HD Dually. I understand you have a Ford F-350 Dually. Would you mind sharing why you opted for a Ford vs any other brands? Also, can you share some info, websites, whom to contact when it comes to visiting the different states? I'd love to be able to park our RV near an ocean view, rivers, and not near a railroad track or highway. Suggestions for a peaceful place would be awesome! By the way, in your video, are they your grandchildren? If so, it's awesome to see they're spending time with their grandparents. I'd love to be able to do the same someday. Thank you again. Peace!

Hi Roderick. If National Parks are going to be a primary location to visit, you may want go even smaller. Easy to see what fits. Take a little time going to each site of interest and go to the reservation site. They will show how equipped and length. For us, we wanted comfort first, then sites to visit. We can usually find a place where the 40 foot fits. Just made reservations for two SC state parks and we found spots with no problem. We bought a late model and used truck. 6 weeks of autotrader and we had two options, the 2014 F350 with 11,000 miles and a 2014 Dodge Ram with 44,000 miles. The F350 was like new and a bargain. Would have considered a Chevy or GMC if one turned up in the search with low miles. Here's a few tips how we search for campgrounds kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6lpxdZshtaxlqw.html. I'm a planner, so I like to have the trip laid out. We'll have 15 campgrounds going to the West in the Fall and I find comfort knowing where we'll be and reservations at each. Other's like a more casual approach. No problem with that, just not my thing. Those were my two grandkids. There was another in a stroller trailing behind who's now running with the best of them. We get to travel together this summer and expect to have them on the channel. It's a joy when we all have our campers and can see the sites.

I bought a 26 ft travel trailer then a class a then a toy hauler and now a Grand Design 5th wheel.

The first 2 reasons is why we bought a Class A Diesel. Our towed fits everywhere and get 25-40 MPG sightseeing and such. I hated my fuel hog truck and not finding parking spots where I would fit. We get around 7 MPG on the Diesel pusher. It would be interesting to compare overall Sq Ft of living space in your Fifth Wheel to our 45 ft DP with full wall & two opposing slides.

@@gregmoore3420 Well I saw the table....he designed it into a computer table that I'm sure he can still use as a dining table when he so chooses. (I've never seen a fifth wheel without a table, unless by choice) As a travel nurse who travels with my retired husband, I absolutely agree with him.... as we weighed out the same options and in the end we both want a vehicle to get around in when we get to our destination, plus my husband loves having a pick up truck, so the expense to go with a motorhome would have definitely meant giving up his truck and we are of the belief that most everyone can use and at some point "needs" a pick up truck. We have certainly had to offer ours to many for this and that😊👍 Plus like my husband says if his truck breaks down we still have our home to sleep in while the truck is in the shop. That was the deal breaker for us over the option of a motorhome. I think motorhomes are very nice but they cost a lot more, so they are not a decision to make lightly for sure. Thanks for the video. Another thing to look at is the length of RV. I had a 26' TT and could find available camp sites in most state parks. I up graded to a 43' fifth wheel and found it very difficult to find sites that could handle the 43' fifth wheel. I am selling the fiver and looking for a smaller unite.

We purchased a 36 ft. 5th Wheel in 2006 that we still have. We bought it for the purpose of my husband to live in when traveling Southern and Central California for his job 6 months out of the year. Our reasons are similar to yours - home-like feel of it and use of tow vehicle. Our 5th Wheel is Travel Supreme (no longer manufactured), I have yet to find a rear kitchen like ours, the layout of your trailer is what I see as the most popular plan nowadays. We also were able modify our trailer slightly when we purchased it, keep in mind this was in 2006, when dishwashers and fireplaces were the new cool things, we added a 14 cu. ft. Refrigerator instead of 8 cu ft one by losing a pull out pantry. Our bedroom has a wall unit that surrounds the window on one side instead of a small dresser allowing the cupboards on the sides to be either for hanging clothes or shelves. Our front closet allows us full use for hanging clothes, no little dressers inside and our washer/dryer closet is in the bathroom area. Like you my husband uses the dining area for his office, the 5th Wheel is also taller so he doesn’t feel like he is in a shoebox (he is 6’4”) He uses the truck for his job. The only problem he is running into, is some RV parks are having restrictions on the age of RVs to about 5 years unless you send pictures which is a hassle, we maintain it very well so he has not been turned away yet.

We are heading west int he fall. When making reservation, I had several parks ask the age of the 5th wheel. I asked why and they stated insurance reasons. Humm, does make you wonder....

We have a 2008 Keystone Everest. It has three small slides,and one the size of the 8' couch. We've heard about the age thing,but haven't run into it yet. This,and our 2002 F350 will probably keep us out of some of the snooty parks,but I don't consider that to be any great loss. Our unit is as clean as any two year old Fifth wheel out there. We're happy with it,and get compliments all the time. I'm sure the idea is to keep ''junk" out. We'll see.

We ran into the RV age question twice this year when booking. I asked why? Was told both times is was an insurance issue. Guess the big issue is how would one tell if it’s a well maintained RV?

I have had everything, but a 5th wheel. I didn't want a 5th wheel, because I had no need for a large p/u. With my class a, I can tow a vehicle that gets good milage for running around when we get to our destination. Also going down the road I can pull into a rest area and not have to get out.

My first look at your channel. You’re closer in age than some here. I’m still window shopping for an RV or trailer, it will be my first one. Going 5th wheeler would be a big step and it requires that one-ton truck. Expensive. I did find a Winnebago model that is light enough for a half-ton so I might try that. ... there are many ways to play the RV game but I just don’t want to have a bad experience - like buying the wrong trailer or the wrong truck. 🙋🏼‍♂️

Hi Stephen. Yep, I’ve seen a thing or two. Part of the trek is finding something you feel comfortable managing. There’s a few 5th wheel models reported as half-ton friendly. If you find one, just check out the fit and finish. I was with the kids this week looking at new pull behinds. Found some nice light weight units, very stylish and functional living space. Thanks for the input. I am leaning towards a light trailer at least to start with, it’s just me and a dog most of the time. ... I don’t have the money to finance both a house and a home on wheels. On the road I just need about a twenty footer with couple recliners or a good sofa, a small kitchen, tv and windows. Adequate hot and cold water and space to bathe. Quality construction, insulation, and reliability. Simplicity of operation and hookup. Ability to add solar or power inverter. Good suspension, preferably dual axle with sealed bottom. 4-season. I have to get the truck first though.

We went to an RV show a couple weeks ago and walked through quite a few light weight pull behind trailers. A number of the manufacturers are makes some nice units.

I noticed you converted your dining room table into your desk/office. How are you doing without a dining room table to eat at? Does it create a problem when you have guests over for dinner? Would love to hear your experiences and opinion about this.

Hasn’t been an issue. We entertained inside, but the space was very close. Not an enjoyable experience with 4 adults. The office space was more important since I work on the road. If the weather allows, we prefer to entertain outdoors. If not, we find a restaurant close by. Just for Joan and I, we are very casual. Our preference is the comfort of the couch and a tray for meals. It may not be everyone’s preference, but works for us.

I enjoy your video. I have 44ft 5th wheel toyhuller. It gross weight is 20000. We pull it with a Dodge Ram 3500 with the Cummins. We get pulling the trailer 10 to 14 miles to the gallon. The problem I have is that we can not pull in any gas station due to how long we are . So I use truck stops an go through the fuel island.it seems like I spent more time setting on the fuel island than going down the. I put a 50 gallon fuel tank In the bed of the truck. Now we can go 850 miles or more be for We have to top off.all so what is nice is When get about just about over 1/2 tank we are looking at fuel prices. If to high just keep on going.

@@chrisludwig9783 I have no idea on that. The way my fuel tank works. It pumps fuel into the truck tank so both tanks go down at the same time.an I have a fuel Gauge that shows how much fuel you have on the truck an the auxiliary tank. An still have the fuel gauge that comes with the truck.

Hi George and thanks. Made if feel more like home. The couch was a few pounds lighter. The one removed had a very heavy metal frame. The two Euro recliners were much lighter than the overstuffed leatherette recliners.

Awesome video. My wife and I just retired and plan to hit the road next year , but till then I am doing all the research I can . I plan to get an Artic Fox 28c footer with about 12k weight. I know I am going to get hit on this , but I plan to pull with a Ford F250 gas . I am a little confused because pulling a bumper pull trailer makes sense because you keep the truck bed for storage , but I been told bumper pull trailers sway when 18 wheelers rush by even with sway bars attached. Second, the diesel trucks are very expensive, and they can cost an arm and a leg to fix compared to a gas engine. Yes I am aware diesel gives better torque an mileage, but the newer diesels have much more emissions making them less reliable than the older ones . Third, I have been told that a fifth wheel is much more stable than a bumper pull , but you lose the truck bed for storage. Just curious to see what you think .

Joe, hope I addressed the diesel questions in your previous comment. On the later point. I don't have all the bed for storage. The 5th wheel garage carries all we need, chairs, outdoor rug, sat dish, tables, grill, tools, hose, Joan's campground decorations (very important!!!), etc. We also have a truck tool box behind the window for the dirty stuff. TT's are a good option. We saw a number at a RV show last week. Great fit and finish. 30 feet in the 8k to 9k weight range. Just depends on the feel, features and type of towing you'll experience. Newer Diesel trucks are WAY more reliable then the previous ones. Your gas truck will work 2x as much and you'll take a huge hit on fuel economy but it should do the job ok. Great choice on the Arctic Fox, they are great quality from all the research I have been doing.

Sat at dealer for sometime. Perfect for us. They wanted it off the lot. List at $68k, we bought for $46k. Same on truck. Search autotrader for 6 weeks looking for late model and low mileage. Found 2, bought a repo with 11,000 mile. $70k truck for $45k. One thing about the truck. We wanted basic. Gizmo after market is cheap. This is a fleet model, rubber floor, cloth seats, but full power and turbo diesel. Just couldn’t track mud in one of the fancy models. Added things like high end radio, back up camera, Rhino liner after purchased. Saved thousands. Jerry...

We splurge once in a while, but budget for it. While in Florida the rates were $875 a month plus power. With power it was about $31 a day. Not moving every week we saved on fuel. State parks offer discount cards, COE are great value and yearly or senior pass cuts rates by half. We have Passport America and saves 50% for a day or week depending on the park. Good Sams has a 10% discount. Escapees member and can stay in their campgrounds for low $20s a day, look for campgrounds that offer week rates with the 7th day free. Shoulder seasons, April, May, September, October are discounted in certain areas, winter rates in cooler climates are often discounted. There’s good deals to be found and once in a while a good treat never hurts.

Safety! Class A are not built for safety. Pickup trucks are made to keep the passengers safe. Class B and C are built to keep the passenger safe but not all the weight pushing them in a wreck.

Jerry, I currently have a F250 2018 Diesel which I just love. I bought it new when I bought my 30' Airstream last year. I'm about ready to make a change to a fiver and I'm looking at a dually F350. I've chatted with different people who have SRW trucks like mine and they say 'all you need is some airbags' - really??? If you don't mind, why did you get a dually besides the obvious?

The F250 is a great truck. Depending on how they are set up they have around 12,000 to 16,000 lbs of 5th wheel towing capacity. Our 5th wheel weighs 14,000 lbs. I wanted to oversize by 30% so I wouldn’t over tax the breaks and suspension in the mountains. That puts me at around 18k. Then add people, fuel, my heavy TS3 hitch, plans for an additional fuel tank and a generator, and I’m quickly exceeding the truck capacity. I looked for a F350 SRW, but found a great deal on a bank repo dually with 11k miles. Regardless of the route you take, you’ll want air bags with the 5th wheel. I have them with a compressor and it helps to dial in the suspension on rough roads. One more thing about the 250. They have a nice ride. No so with the 350. It’s a work horse.

Have you found issues in having a 40 footer in getting in places you would like to go? We were going to try and stay around 35 feet to be able to get in more state and national parks. However the ~40 footers are much roomier.

Rodney, we looked at a number that were 32 to 35. All were nice, but we want as much living space as possible and still have an area for my office. 40 feet does limits us somewhat in the smaller state and federal campgrounds, but checking some of these out, we'd need 30 feet or less to be safe. We just didn't want anything that small. In 6 years, we've gone everywhere we wanted. Just a little research and making sure there's a fit before your travel.

Hi Terri, I do see this from time to time. Watch the Less Junk, More Journey folks. The have a E350 diesel van pulling an Air Stream. It just comes down to trailer weight and the capacity of the tow vehicle. The good news is there is a great guide to help in your search for a tow vehicle. Go to www.trailerlife.com/trailer-towing-guides/. Find the year and vehicle you’re interested in and keep handy as your look for your RV. Make sure you look at the TT total capacity (TT plus the load). Also don’t go for vehicle max. Give yourself about 20% so you don’t overly stress the van. Sounds like a lot, but simple math and finding both van and TT you like. Safe travels, Jerry...

Terri, We pulled a 27 ft TT for about 25 years with an E 350 gas engine Ford 12 pass van. With 5 kids, it was the only reasonable way we could go. We live in Minnesota and pulled it to both Disney Land and Disney World and many dozens of places between the coasts. Our first E350 had the 460 carb engine, the 2nd had the 351 fuel injected engine. I liked the 460 much better, with better pulling torque. To control the sway from trucks and side winds, you need a good sway control hitch. I used the Equalizer brand. There may be a better brand on the market, but that one was a good compromise. In choosing a van, do not go with the 15 passenger model, it has too much length between the rear axle and the hitch ball, thus more sway. One advantage of the TT vs 5th wheel is it is much easier to back up into tight places, another advantage is much less height, so you don't need to worry about low branches in campgrounds, nor low bridges that are still in existence. I do have a F350 diesel now with a 37 ft 5th wheel Heartland trailer. I like its greater interior space. The big trailers (5ers) usually have a 50 amp cord, but most of the campgrounds we have stayed at do not have 50 amp service, so we adapt down to 30 amp service and forgo using some of the amenities in the 5er. I am convinced that there is no ONE really good answer for all wants and needs. Good Luck in your decision!

Hello there. I am planning on budgeting approximately $125,00 for a about a 34 ft fifth wheel and a used f450 diesel dually. Am I being realistic? Was wondering what you paid for your rig. Your video is spot on! ..... thx much,Russ

You can Russell. Just takes a little creative shopping. We shopped for 5th wheels for 4 months. We found our 5th wheel new. Was ordered and the family didn’t take it. Sat on the lot for a number of months. We bought it for $.60 on the dollar. The F350 was a bank repo with 11k miles. Took a few months and nightly cartrader.com to find, but like new. Buying hitch, air bags, those essentials for the RV, we were well under $100k.
