Why We Protest: Colombia

Ойын-сауық

On September 9th 2020 a video began circulating on social media of police in Bogota hitting and tazing Javier Ordóñez, a father of two, who was abused to death in police custody.
The event triggered a wave of protests around Colombia that ended with the killings of 13 protestors by the police.
But beyond the issue of police brutality, Colombia’s unrest has been brewing for a long time. The fallout of a decades-long armed conflict, a peace process that appears to be coming apart at the seams, an impending economic crisis, and a government with far-right conservative leanings that has failed to appease the growing frustration -all factors driving the anger of everyday Colombians.Those issues were at the forefront of the massive mobilizations that happened at the end of 2019 -the largest in decades-, and have only resurfaced stronger in the wake of the COVID lockdown.
In this episode of “Why We Protest”, VICE embeds with some of the youth at the forefront of Colombia’s protest movement.

    I went to Colombia in 2018 as a 21 year old going to spend time with my grandmother (I was born and raised in the uk). I traveled a little and met my bf . I was really happy and planned to stay there for a while I wanted to start a business. It's beautiful and a picture perfect paradise . I fell in love and got pregnant . In november 2019 I was 6 months pregnant and got caught up in the cali protests where I saw the police nonchalantly run over peaceful protesters . I had been harassed by police and seen many injustices that I had to keep quiet about and that was in the short time I spent there but witnessing the lack of compassion and love for human life made me sick. I cant imagine how fed up everyone is . I quickly decided to come back to England and as soon as I got off the plane and was greeted by the officer I felt at home. I feel so bad that it isn't so easy for everyone . I love Colombia but Its uncertainty doesn't fit right with me as the mother i have become . I plan on doing anything i can to help even if it's just donating what i can which is what I have been doing . I have found appreciation and a disgust for injustice that I didnt know I had inside and I suggest everyone to travel to learn about what is really going on . We could all do so much more. Living through this made me understand what makes England so great for me and I want to do what I can to preserve that freedom.

Dios guarde a tu familia siempre.

    I got the chills when someone yelled, “ASESINOS!” I remember Dia de Las Mujeres in San Cristobal, Chiapas, MX. i had constant chills and I couldn’t help the tears just falling from my eyes as I watched all the people coming into zócalo in trucks and combi buses masked, eyes of fire and throats singing for their fallen comrades. Pictures, banners, fists all raised NO FEAR. Then the mothers began to speak.... DESAPARECIDO.... a mother spoke of her son and I had seen his posters 6months prior. Well days before the Mexican Military had sent her his cranium and told her the rest of his body was spread thru the mountains of Chiapas “since he loved those indians so much”. Those indians. Zapatistas. Modern day reincarnates of my heroes Geronimo, Chief Manuelito, Sitting Bull, Che. The names now Comandante David, Sub Comandante Marcos..... Chiapas.... san Andres, Pohlo, Oventic.... i left my heart there in the mountain jungles, with my distant relatives. In Navajo our sacred mountain is called Tsodil(pronounced like-tzodzith) . In Chiapas, theres Mayan people called Tzozil. We are all related.The fight continues.

    as a Colombian whos lived in the US for 20 years and moved back to Colombia 2 years ago, this really upsets me. how can these people protest to the current administration when the previous one did so much worse. president Santos did nothing but make Colombians look like a laughing stock. one of the great things about America is that they don't negotiate with terrorists, and what did Santos do, well he pardoned all the murders/kidnappings/drug trafficking/terrorism. and to top it off, he paid the leaders of the FARC and gave them a voice in government. what about the thousands of family's affected by the FARC's acts of terror, well they had to suck it up and realize that justice wont be served unless they did it themselves. let the FARC die, to a lot of Colombians they and the cartels are the same entity, the only difference is that the cartels dont bullshit you with stories about "wanting to make Colombia better" .but obviously since Santos said nice things and made empty promises, people ate it up. I'm not a fan of Duque, I think he is week and a pushover but he is still way better than the other option of a socialist kiss ass that is Petro. which brings me to my next point, all these protests have been incited by Gustavo Petro. Petro is the typical socialist that promises the world to the poor and middle class while he sits on his ivory throne getting rich. utter garbage of a human being. and its sad that these people are letting themselves be tricked into his way of thinking. but another thing that is sad is how the majority of Colombians are, we have such a huge love for our country but a majority of Colombians are lazy workers and almost always will find excuses to not do a job right or not do it at all. why is it that my family's business prefers to hire legal Venezuelans to work over Colombians? because Venezuelans actually put in hard work compared to most Colombians. we've had millions upon millions of COP stolen from us and its always been by our own people. another example is if you go to big cities, Colombians treat the streets like trashcans, and its just sad. people who go to Cartagena know just how bad it gets and for people who are so proud of their country, they sure don't treat my beautiful country that way. anyways let me get back on topic a little, police brutality is a thing and there are corrupt cops. but what can you expect when its mandatory to either serve in the military or the police when you turn 18, you're going to get the bad apples with the good. and yes its sad that some protesters were killed, that should have never happened, but its also sad when police officers and their family's are either threatened or killed by the "protesters". and I hope the irony for these people isn't lost when these people either get killed, stolen from, raped, etc... and the police are able to be well equipped and to defend them since its damn near impossible to legally own a firearm for self defense and if you do defend yourself you are still highly likely to be prosecuted for it. anyways sorry for the ramble but I hope I didn't turn away anyone who might want to visit Colombia in the future, it really is a beautiful country that has so much to offer.

    If you are a US citizen, then you should pressure your government to give other countries and people's a chance to live free and in peace. It's mostly, if not only, because of US interference, that those countries you are talking about have corrupt governments that don't give a damn about their people as long as they go along with US foreign policy, neoliberalism and living a life in poverty and oppression.

    It is relatively high, I believe. For example, the National Police are part of the Ministry of Defense and are managed alongside the armed forces. They are not a separate civil entity. It’s also common to see Military Police and military units patrolling certain parts of Colombian cities. Also, all young men must serve in the military or police after they turn 18.

    @@albertigno1129 So, it would be correct to assume that the political and economic elite calls the shots, not the military behind the scenes? Please forgive me but this goes against logic as the military has the guns. In some Asian countries, the military coordinates everything from election rigging to horse trading of elected politicians to favorable media narrative and much much more. The Prime minister or the President is only a stooge.

  • @albertigno1129

    @albertigno1129

    @@Shawk95 I'm not an expert, but this is what I perceive, and many Colombians would disagree whit what I'm saying (we disagree on everything). The army and police have the guns but the elite is extremely wealthy, even so that in the 90's they could afford to create their own illegal private armies (they are literally called paramilitaries) which does the dirty job that the army itself cannot do against political enemies (the guerrillas and the leftist leaders). This is all in agreement with the proper army and police commanders who are very generously paid. Of course they influence the outcome of the elections but who call the shots are the the super wealthy elite, old and new. The old are a bunch of renowned families that tightly control the presidency, congress and media and pass the seats from generation to generation. The new elite is more involved with paramilitaries and drug trafficking and apparently legal business like construction and finances. They also have some seats in the congress and provincial governments. The state is extremely corrupt and positions of power are split in parts like a cake. The most visible 'strong man' in Colombia is not a military guy, but a civilian, Uribe, and the military are so subordinate to him that some high officiers that served under his presidency are facing judicial processes covering Uribe's alleged orders for prosecuting dissidents and even killing innocent civilians and make them pass for guerillas, while Uribe remains untouched.

    The retreat of the FARC was a major mistake IMHO. The people of Colombia deserve peace, social justice and a stop to US influence in their affairs! But neighter peace, nor social change in the interests of the vast majority of the people will be possible in Colombia without a revolution, because it's so important to US foreign policy, who want and need Colombia to be ruled by the right wing, in the interests of the wealthy ruling class and the US. So the US doesn't only tolerate systemic murder of opposition leaders and social activists, but also far right paramilitaries involved in cocaine trafficking, who help the neoliberal, right wing and pro NATO/pro imperialist politics in Columbia to stay in power and to enact their policies against the will of the Columbian people. All power to the people! Down with US-imperialism! Venceremos!

    The problem with social protest in Colombia is that leftist ideologies seem to have co-opted public discourse, marking an inescapable duality: either you are with the groups promoting the marches, or you are a fascist. Many dissatisfied with the government prefer to avoid demonstrating rather than being covered by the supposedly all-encompassing flag of the left, its more radical facets always the louder and the most uncompromising. Polarization and confusion reign rampant and corrupt elites benefit the most.

  • @juto4296

    Um, well, it's actually the right-wing politicians who claim that those who are not 'uribistas' are communists or guerrilla fighters. The left has a constant conflict with itself and centrists, but they only claim that right-wingers are part of a fascist-like government (and they're close, but not entirely right).

  • @danielmontilla1197

    @danielmontilla1197

    @@juto4296 I totally agree with you, homogenizing and stigmatizing the opposition is also a typical tactic of Uribism. But my point is that critics of the left who are also not rightist do not find a place in the more visible and better organized resistance organizations because these organizations are predominantly leftist. The ordinary experience of people who do not militate on the left but want to be part of the mobilizations is one of boredom, alienation, frustration and antagonism. It is not possible to find a common ground or to be in solidarity with the causes because ideology interferes, excludes and dissuades. It perpetuates the idea that there are only three slices on the political spectrum and that anyone who is not committed to either the left or the right is a lukewarm centrist. This is wrong.
