A channel should have to apply to be featured as a kids channel. Once approved they are shown. If they fuck up they get removed from kids and are never allowed back.

This is the correct solution. It's such a ludicrously simple problem to solve. They can even throw their algorithm at the approval process to cut down on bad actors trying to get through but every channel that gets through should have a person who is accountable for its existence.

When I worked as a Wal-mart cashier, I saw these videos daily because parents would just plop an iPad in front of their kids to shut them up for an hour or so while they shopped. I already knew about the actual content in the videos and I would sometimes notify the parent. They were either very shocked as to what their child was watching, or angry with me for "telling them how to raise their kids" That's basically what my parents did, they just sat me down in front of the tv and go off to do whatever, but at least Clifford wasn't burying Emily Elizabeth alive and then shitting on her.

My mom would be furious if my brother and I, or now even our kids, were to watch that type of stuff. We weren't allowed to watch The Simpsons, King of the Hill, any adult swim, or other late night TV shows unless it was Fresh Prince or The Nanny or whatever. My response to those who get defensive would be like, "so you're okay with them watching that? You'd rather let an electronic baby sit your kid rather than know what they're doing?" Kids being quiet usually equals them getting into something...

I know exactly how that feels. I work at Disney and I get families like you described. While parents looked around and did whatever the kids would be in their strollers glued to an iPad or their parents phones and would look up this garbage. It can range from surprise egg cringe to the joker kidnapping Rapunzel and jabbing a syringe on her hand. The sad part is that I mostly get the “you’re not a parent, you don’t get to tell my child when he can or can’t watch!” bull crap.

Then the algorithm just lumped anything it thought was "kids-centric" into the mix, like clips of the English dub of Ghost Stories. Because there's no way a cartoon could be for not kids! Family entertainment is defaulted to kids, like the Animaniacs songs, ultimately leading to entire playlists being deleted for the crime of being approachable by kids. I get the point of it, but good god, algorithms aren't the all-solution, Google, Jesus H Christmas.

Watch the videos with your kids and never leave them alone in front of a computer screen.

However, many schools use the app, and allow the kids to watch it without any supervision. So your kids could be watching inappropriate content at school without you even knowing.

KZread should make their kids channel ONLY with channels that have been vetted by actual humans as benign. Then you as the parent can add whatever additional channels you want. Also, there should be some sort of "verified kid-friendly" designation and channels will only get the KZreadKids seal of approval AFTER being looked at by an actual human being. Maybe even graded a score out of 5 -- this would keep the auto-generated & creepy from floating to the top and would reward content creators who actually put EFFORT and THOUGHT into making quality content for children. As it is now, anyone trying to make actual QUALITY kids videos will simply be swamped by some random mishmash of stock animations and annoying music put on repeat because they can just flood KZread with QUANTITY.

I'm trying to convince my girlfriend that it's a bit early to be letting our 2 year old watch KZread on his own. Some of the content he watches is fine, but then he watches a video of little girls making a mess and screaming and fake crying to get what they want and eating candy nonstop. It's just setting a bad example while he is still emulating the things he watches. I get that it's stressful to never be able to sleep in in the mornings and sometimes you just want to sit him beside you and give him a tablet so you can get a few more minutes of rest, but then you got a kid that incredibly finicky and fake cries? Maybe you should stick to Netflix kids.

I mean, there are official apps like Nick Jr that kids can use and it’s fine. Even then, download some apps for yourself and play it to figure out if it’s fine. I’m not a parent; but, I have babysat a four-year-old before. Whenever she wanted to go on the YT Kids app i’d keep a close eye on the screen and try to redirect her onto something else when it started showing a single hint of weirdness. Like, we’d take turns playing Fruit Ninja, ‘check on the kitties’ on Neko Atsume, put on a movie, or do something offline. I don’t have an issue with tablets as long as there’s strict monitoring depending in the age.

+Glacius I'm a Pedagogic Worker. I've studied kids' cognitive, social and emotional behaviour 3 year long, from the ages 0 to 21 (which is when you, on average stop growing.) You can tell your girlfriend that I agree with you. He'll be just as (if not more) entertained by a calm Netflix 'Postman pat" episode. Or DVD's or VHS-tapes. Repetition is no problem. Perhaps a Sesamestreet casette-tape while he plays, is fine as well. Give him a cartboard box to play with or a bucket of water in the garden. An interactive 'play with us and jump' casette or put some small bells on a band around his ankle and let him 'make music' by dancing. There's tons of stuff he can do on his own. KZread will over-stimulate his brain and cause him to act out of frustration and adrenaline. Postman Pat and a nice soft blanket on the couch, is a perfect way to start your morning. Limit the use of an Ipad to 2-times half an hour, if you must (assuming it's a bad case of Ipad-use). Nothing more and preferably less. Good luck!

I stay by the opinion that kids who aren't old enough to endure this kind of stuff shouldn't be allowed to browse KZread or the internet in general alone. It's nice and all if they want to watch videos online, but then for gods sake have a parent or any adult at all accompany them. Problem solved. There will always be stuff like this, and there's a reason the original KZread didn't want anyone under 13 (although I think most kids can just laugh over this with 10 years already). If you can't watch your kid all the time it's in front of a tablet (which it shouldn't be anyway...), download some safe vids. Honestly, we managed to survive without constant KZread input (I sound like a grandmother but I'm only in my late teens too, so it's not a "back in my days" story), the kids of today can do it too.

The only reason why I don't completely place blame on the parents is because the app is called KZread Kids and is aimed, by KZread, at that demographic. That being said, holy crap, if you're going to set an iPad in front of your kid for hours at a time you can at least check in every 15 minutes or so and make sure they aren't looking at softcore porn or violence. Make a goddamn playlist for your kids of content that you have already seen and can trust. When I was a kid, we had access to the television while my mom was cooking, cleaning, etc. but she still checked in on us to make sure we were watching child appropriate channels.

My son, age 6, didn't understand what was happening in the videos and didn't understand why I was being such a "mean mom" for totally locking down KZread. The worst part is when I went back and reviewed the history,... if that one show hadsnt caught my attention Idk how much longer it would have gone on. Honestly, how apple convinced everyone "Ipads are educational" is beyond me. We just sort of followed other parents into the trap because everyone does it. Biggest mistake ever. The kids just get addicted to them, and it's all unregulated. At least if you buy kids games in shops, and watch kids shows on TV some regulator has said that's ok. Most of these "educational games" are actually just educating kids how to play freemium games on an ipad and nothing else, and youtube's just an unregualted version of kids TV where half the videos are often made by people I wouldn't trust to babysit my kids at all. To be honest though, it's just the addiction. It's so bad, and it comes on so fast. All of a sudden they're begging for ipads, it takes ages to get them off, etc. The negative effect was huge on our kids and it had absolutely no plus side. Some parents have said there's less fights if they each have their own ipad. I just found there were more fights about ipads, and less social kids.

maybe I am being a little harsh but to me abandoning your kids in front of a screen is lazy parenting. As a parent, nothing should be more important to you than your kids well being and success in life, and there are so many alternatives to entertaining and educating a kid than just putting them on the internet. When we are young, we have an extraordinary capacity to learn almost anything because our brains are still fresh in a sense. Give your kids an instrument from an early age (not to early though) and they will play and love it. There are also tons of interesting toys out there that they could use as well. If the screen is really that attractive at least make them play a nice video game (all Nintendos are family friendly). Don't put them in front of a screen doing NOTHING, it numbs their brains. Playing, especially playing videos games and musical instruments, develops their problem-solving abilities, perception and even originality and reflexes. When I was younger, that's what my parents did. They worked a lot but they made sure that I would't just be a slave to our screens. As dumb as it may sound I spend more hours playing with legos than watching TV, more hours playing piano than exploring the internet. And even when I was watching TV, especially in the evening, they would be around, often checking if the content was ok and they would even argue over it until I turned 14. My mom was often against any kind of violence on TV while my dad was like "but it's fun, honey!" 😅 (come on my mom, Naruto isn't THAT violent!!! It's just kids learning how to fight enemies of their village, but you make it sound bad, like GAAAAWDD you are always exaggerating everything!)

That being said I came out mostly unscathed because for a long time I didn't have a tablet(still don't and I don't want a tablet I didn't even get a phone till I was 16) the electronic I used most was my gaming console Xbox 360 and my DS's that being said I had an iPod touch and when I started coming on KZread it was far less political and a far safer place for viewing videos because I would mostly find stuff like Smosh and other let's play channels but the video landscape has changed drasticly now. Let's plays are probably the safer videos for kids to watch since most let's players are aware kids watch them and try to keep it moderately PG Yogscast would be a good example of a child-friendly let's play channel. My suggestion for this day and age would be to keep smartphones and tablets away from your kids like the plague, clarification don't outright ban them from using one if they go to a friends house and their friend has one but you stop them from using it or kick up a storm that's guaranteed to cause problems just don't buy them a smartphone and/or tablet because they are probably the most socially damaging things for children because of things like social media(which I barely use don't see much point in it). It can suck for a kid to be left out but I think the benefits from it are well worth it and get them something like a 3DS or a console because they are far less damaging but don't throw them head first into a PC or laptop that could be way, way worse than a tablet for different reasons. Now consoles and handhelds have KZread but it's a bit harder and annoying to use so kids probably won't try too hard to use KZread and games usually don't have damaging content unless it's PC games because they can be messed up but most things on steam are somewhat okay for kids if you get a kid a computer do it when they're about 10(maybe older this was about when I got mine but things were far tamer) because that's when it's kind of necessary just outfit their browsers with ad blockers, pop-up blocker, and site raters to help avoid any messy situations you could put safe search on but I probably wouldn't since I think exploring at their own pace is important then again things may have changed from when I started. I would recommend getting kids a smartphone or tablet at around maybe 12-14 (maybe older this is just around when I got mine) depends on the kid but don't restrict their access they shouldn't search anything too messed up and will likely use it to find gaming videos if they're into games. That being said this is from the perspective of a gamer if your child doesn't like games that may be more challanging since I guess they might search for comedy videos and I have absolutly no Idea what a child looking for comedy might find. This is all my opinion and from expirence growing up in this age.

It's false advertising on KZread's part to claim they can make the site kid-friendly and asinine that because they can't, they try and force stupid unclear rules on everyone. Love people saying that they weren't allowed to use Internet until they were X years old and that it should be a solution. Does no one realize that in our generation Internet wasn't simply everywhere as it is today? It was easy to keep kids away. How can you act like smartypants when it's *actually our generation, generation of people commenting here, living in the Internet life* who children follow? Times change whether we like it or not, and it's time to fight the problem, not only to buzz about how it was when you were young. Of course, parental control is crucial, but we have to acknowledge that big part of our life went online and kids are humans - and they will always go where we go. Hope my point is clear.

I think KZread should have these modes for the website: G,PG or R, etc. Therefore, kids can only watch acceptable contents in 'PG mode' on KZread. And it is the publishers' responsibilities to rate their videos before they post them. R content can only appear on 'R mode' KZread. Audiences can also report inappropriate contents not appearing in its matching mode.

You may be under the false impression these companies devout a ton of resources to prosecuting, flagging and taking down stuff using their intellectual property. They don't. It's all automated. And the bots can't tell when an animated bootleg Elsa is being depicted. They specialize in flagging down anything taken directly from the actual movies. Actual people have to watch these videos. And since 300 hours of content are uploaded to youtube every minute, that's quite an herculean, boring task. They'd have to hire 54,000 people, each watching 8 hours of video everyday in 3 shifts, to make sure every minute is policed. And that is not including that two people will inevitably watch the same video, that you'd want to have many different opinions on a video before taking it down, vacation days, sick days... Though, in December KZread hired 10,000 people to police these videos.

Hey, KZread algorithm! If a video has piss in its description, suicide in its title, or a nail visibly through a part of a person's body in the thumbnail, IT'S NOT SUITABLE FOR KIDS! Come on, Skynet would do a better job than this.

I don't like to shame entire generations, but this is just an observation. I'm 20 years old and I feel like the current group of parents of young kids, so like the crowd in their 30's, has a huge lack of responsibility for their kids. Sorry to generalize because it's definitely not everyone and some parents these days are definitely way too protective as well. And it might not be generational, it might be me just becoming aware, but the amount of kids I babysit who spend all their time doing whatever they want on their own personal iPads when they're as young as 3 years old stuns me. Also I'm a lifeguard and literally every day there is some kid who blatantly can't swim in the pool alone or maybe with a one year older sibling and the parents are at the bar or on their phone in a chair not paying attention at all. It's really sad how many times we've had to save kids or help them find lost parents because they don't feel they should have t watch their children and I think using technology as an aid or a babysitter had contributed to that.

When I have kids, I'm going to teach them how swim as early as possible, just like my parents did with me...

This problem IS STILL prevalent! Now they're using the algorithm in other languages, so you can't even read the title of the video and they're popping up all over the place!

As a mother of three, I don't let my youngest use KZread. I don't trust their algorithms and there are lots of other apps that have more kid friendly content, like Netflix in kid mode. I'm beginning to hate Paw Patrol, my youngest loves it and the theme song might be stuck in my head for the rest of my life. I think it's the parents' resposibility to monitor their childrens internet use. As a parent, you must get to know the apps and sites your children are using. My 13 yo is gradually getting access to everything he wants to see from the net, but my 3 yo has very limited access to content.

Sierra Blake That is less of a problem since if they have limited YT to begin with, they’ll only search up what interests them in the limited time they get online, like reading about bugs or some shit during school. My point being make sure your kid doesn’t get interested in this trash and the rest will fall into place.

I have a little sister that used to love watching nursery rhymes, we had to take it away from her because the videos were getting so vile and disgusting. My sister would get very distressed and for lack of a better word traumatized asking us to take it away whilst bawling her eyes out. It made me very sad to see that it took such a push for youtube to get off their asses and take the right precautions when it comes to children, more effort needs to be put in when children are involved.

At a certain point it would make more sense to "send" to the kids version of youtube, rather than it just being a filtered version of the main site. Not that the video can't be on both sites, but even a "how to" video on fixing a car's AC shouldn't be there either, even if it was squeaky clean.

  • @SherrifOfNottingham

    @SherrifOfNottingham

    6 жыл бұрын

We shouldn't need to age restrict (which makes a video tagged for 18+ viewing btw) for most of the videos on KZread. A few goddamns or shits does make an R rated film. Age restriction is too far away, there needs to be a middle ground, or simply a tag to flag it as "for kids" since a majority of "for kids" programming is usually made from start to finish with the fact that it's "for kids" in mind.
