Why we need to change how we talk about climate change | Kris De Meyer | TEDxLondon

Did you know more people are concerned about climate change than ever before? So why isn’t that translating into more action? Neuroscientist Kris De Meyer is here to explain. Kris believes the way we’re communicating about climate change is wrong. Conventional wisdom tells us beliefs drive actions - so if we get more people to care about climate change then they’ll act upon it - right? Wrong. In reality, actions drive beliefs far more. That means, we need to start telling stories about how you take climate action rather than telling people what to do. As Kris says, “we need to collectively tell stories of doing” to inspire more people to get started on combating climate change. Kris is a neuroscientist and director of the Climate Action Unit at University College London. He brings insights from neuroscience and psychology to how we tell stories about climate change, communicate about climate risk, and create opportunities for climate action. He trains journalists and communicators in how to tell stories of action, rather than stories of concern. With storytelling studio Fast Familiar and NESTA, he developed The Strategy Room, an interactive story scenario showing the positive future we can create by acting on climate change. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

"Businesses are waiting for consumers to change their buying behaviour". Where did that come from? They're actively driving consumer buying behaviour

Good talk. I already know what to do, but I'm limited in what I can do for financial reasons.

Me too! Solar and batteries enough to power a house and EV, plus the EV, would cost $70,000 plus. We insulated the house, $10,000 In materials and a lot of work. Another $15,000 to replace the gas furnace and hot water heater with heat pump. Plus a month for me to install them. Insulated curtains, not very expensive. But a month so sew them. Replace gas stove with induction, $1,500. But it took me time to run the new wires, repair and repaint the walls, etc. We no longer fly, but take trains or drive to local coastlines and mountains. We drive much less. Keep the house colder in winter and warmer in summer. Avoid plastics as we can. Buy concerts and dinners instead of material gifts, etc. And with all of this, we have consumed a lot to conserve. Hmmm.

@@freeheeler09 Some things are more important to replace than others. You can make a judgment call for each piece. The EV would be significant in how it changes your behaviors and expenses, not to mention patterns. The wires seem more of an 'as-needed' thing unless there are some problems or the electrician determines faults. The gas furnace would probably be #2 with gas costs, and the heat pump would probably be a lot cheaper and more efficient. The induction stove could probably wait until the stove starts getting a little old or problematic. As it's part of the plan, you might want to start collecting the right pots/pans/etc in the meantime. Doing your best to balance out the wear and costs with the consumption is the best way. Avoid payment plans and loans to avoid expensive interest.

Knowing what we do about the impact of animal agriculture on climate change, if we are not vegan, we are not taking the simplest and most effective action can. The system can't stop us being vegan, it's our choice and I'm not just talking about what we eat. If we are not vegan, we are only activists in terms of what we want government, industry etc to do but not demanding the same of ourselves. It is important to lead by example where we can. It is so frustrating when the discussion about climate change doesn't have anything to do with animal agriculture.

And population of global south moving to global north. Lots of clear cutting of forests and overfishing and destruction of rivers in both global north and south. Populations still growing too fast and displacing wildlife in global south. Enough blame to go around.
