Filling the gap in the modular is one of my favourite ways to find out about modules I have never heard of. I often intentionally mock up a skiff with different combinations of modules I own which will result in different 'left over' amounts of hp. Then, I search for modules with the exact hp remaining and then there's a few hours gone to reading right away.

The two KZreadrs I like the most! Fantastic pairing. I hope you guys don't mind being nicknamed "Gnome" (Alex) and "Goblin" (Sam), when I explain you both to my wife. (It's a World of Warcraft reference, where both groups are tinkerers, some more controlled than others. Needless to say, they often cause wanted or unwanted colourful explosions.) Thanks for the great content from both of you! And happy belated Christmas and happy new year!

This was a worthwhile conversation, and the first I've heard of this series. Alex, you have a knack for a natural and engaging interview -thank you. Sam really hit home with me when he spoke about the desire for more options when instead what we all really want is less- dropping science. yay!

The 'genius' label is bandied about, mostly over- and inappropriately used and unfairly puts people on pedestals. Sam explained it all himself: he picked up his willingness to experiment from his dad, who did it out of financial necessity. What Sam said was a lot more empowering than just labelling him a genius. Anyone can do what he does - its all trial and error and repetition establishes knowledge to reduce future failure. What most people dont have is that willingness to experiment and *fail* because, and this could be blamed on SM, we usually only see peoples carefully curated successes and not how may times they tried beforehand.

Fantastic conversation, I thoroughly enjoyed it. So many truths to consider. I have been following what Sam is doing for a couple of years now, and gets me interested in a few things that I can also add to my DIY projects. The stuff you two mentioned about what to REMOVE when designing a module is absolutely true. I have had to work through the struggle of feature creep so many times when working on my own modules. I have a bit of a request to make, Mylarmelodies - not sure if it's on your radar or not, but have you considered trying to get Moritz Klein on a 'Why We Bleep'? Another DIY'er I've followed for several years, since he not only designs his own circuits but also takes time to explain how they work (and demonstrate it). I think you two could have a fantastic conversation about what it's been like for him to work with Erica Synths. Cheers!

great chat, great thoughts, great people, great scott! Hussle culture - yeah I quit the "career" in 2011 and sure it's not been without drawbacks, compromises, stress and an adjustment to less income quite often but like Sam said - we have what we need already, that applies to alot more aspects of life than just music tech, buy less you can earn less. Freedom, space and time to think or not think are lost to too many people and they're at the core of my life now, for which I'm incredibly grateful and it turns out that was my "ambition" all along. It's great to see you settle into life rather than career and seem happy with the decision, life is way too short for bullshit and doing what you're told. I'll check out 4000 weeks, 40,000 days? Pt2399 is one of thd best, the filtering and the abuse of the one bit feature is lush. Its almost infinitely useful. Belton brick is just a multi pt2399 unit that replicates spring reverb. Most reverb algorithms are a series of delays in series/parallel with a bit of dirt, filtering and modulation. Try using a signal splitter, a stack of delay pedals and send/return them through a modulation and overdrive combo, oh and have a dry signsl into the mixer. Lush, curate your own reverb with all the settings.

The "deletion of social media accounts" epilogue bit is also that people have stopped being artists and turned into social media managers, concerned more with working the algorithm and posting content several times a day to stay relevant instead of disappearing for several months and returning with an EP/album. (Thats a major bug bear I have: people drip release single tunes over a series of weeks instead of an EP or album. Cant help but feel tepid about their music when its like that)

Yeah it’s a problem! It’s also kind of essential I think to some degree, hence what I was trying to intimate to sam early in the chat, I think you kind of have to have more going on than just music to stand out these days. Nothing new under the sun of course since artists past also had other feathers in their caps and had to work hard to promote new releases. not everyone can be burial, basically.

Dexron III ATF is often used in manual transmission applications, and often recommended by the gearbox manufacturers themselves.

@petegreenwood2793 I've heard this online. Why then is it not the lubricant specified by the Vehicle manufacturer in their service schedules? Its been decades since I was a fitter. The variety of fluids used in vehicles was slimmer. But Atf and ep90 are two wildly different fluids with different properties and intended uses. I've gad to check in with the various folk who handle my motor now (arthriti hands, old age sucks), they all say it sounds like horse s#@×. I'm inclined to say if it walks, smells, looks and quacks, then best off going with the manufacturers spec. I'm happy to be wrong, but it seems like a big expensive gamble. At least you'll never damage a gear box with the right oil. Also why do the vast majority of owners never experience sticking gear box issues, using the specified oil, changed at regular intervals?

I have a vehicle with a Tremec TKO600 5-spd manual 600 ft-lb rated 'box, and Tremec themselves specify Dexron III as a suitable fluid. I also remember it being recommended by Rover back in the day as suitable for the LT77/R380 'boxes (as used in the SD1 etc.) particularly if the synchro's were a bit slow and the 'box was a bit tricky to shift. I'd absolutely agree that it does sound very odd to be using AFT in a manual 'box when you first hear about it.

Id just like to chime in though, the idea about tge 40hr week, permission to piss is toxically pervasive. Ive never had a lot of money always felt the puritanical wirk ethic guilt abd battled hard against the guilt that arises. I know Im happier for it. The social mefia thing can be incredibly damaging. Consider this, most people dont make a living from their art, they do it either way.
