Why VAR is Ruining Football!

Remember the good old days when we could celebrate a goal without having to wait 5 minutes to see if the striker’s nose was offside? Ah, we sure miss those simpler times.
VAR was supposed to make football better. So far, it’s only made things worse.
From inconsistent decisions to lengthy delays, here are 5 reasons why VAR is ruining football.

    The worst VAR call I’ve ever seen was that penalty in the Liverpool V Brighton game, Andy Robertson accidentally hit someone’s foot while trying to win the ball back. A light tap to the foot resulted in a penalty.

    Yeah , when Danny Wellbeck gets accidentally touched then stays on his feet with his eyes on the ref long enough so that he gets seen falling over, Andy Robertson had no intention of comitting the contact as his eyes were clearly on the ball but Wellbeck nicked it away at the last split second.. there is absolutely no context in descision makeng when things like this happen, it was 100% unintentional.. the worst thing now is players who hand ball when turning their backs, half will say it was handball because they had not been looking and half will say not handball because they couldnt see the ball..

    Most of the VAR problems is the offside, and penalties given for absolutely nothing. Fix those two things and VAR is good. For instance Connor Coady diving yesterday, and then VAR correcting the decision was a great example of VAR working. ANOTHER solution is like American Football.. I know I know... BUT listen. NFL challenge rules allow for two challenges for each team during a game. A third challenge can be awarded to a team only if they are successful in both of their previous challenges. If one or both of those challenges is denied, then the team does not get a third challenge. What can be challenged is also limited. THIS will also shut up managers complaining a little bit....maybe. haha. This would limit the number of stoppages.. if the refs missed it. The manager can ask to challenge it, then... and only then VAR should come into play. Some other things, like off the ball violent conduct... should be automatic stoppage and review.

    VAR is necessary to prevent players benefitting from diving. The blame should be placed squarely at the feet of perpetual divers, though FIFA have allowed them to go unpunished for years. The diving in the 2018 World Cup was an utter farce in some games, yet not even ONE player was booked for it in the whole tournament. The offside situation with VAR is absolutely ridiculous though, but FIFA could fix that tomorrow though if they wanted to. Just change the offside rule to say that there needs to be daylight between the two players.

    The problem, as many are suggesting, is not with the rules, but with VAR itself. The rules of football have long been in place and never has there been as much talk of a drastic overhall of some rules as there is now. In my opinion, there are two ways of fixing VAR. Firstly, do away with the lines used to decide whether a player is offside and let the officials call it based soley from looking at it. If there is no clear and obvious offside that can be seen simply by looking at the best camera angle, a goal should stand. Rugby has an offside rule and I have never seen lines being used by the TMO to decide whether a player was offside or not. This allows the benefit of the doubt to be given to the attacking team, as was always in place before VAR was used. Secondly, the referees and officials should be mic'd up so that everyone can hear why a decision was given. This will allow them to explain their interpretation of the rules and minimize the hysteria that seems to surround every big call. People may still disagree at times, but at least we would know why a decision was made, instead of having to guess for ourselves without any explanation.

    The problem is not VAR! The problem is the bad designed offside rule. If the decision based on a rule depends on a few cm this rule needs to be changed. One could prevent hanging attackers waiting at the goal differently. Before VAR goals had been denied because the attacker was 2 cm offside as well. The difference being that some goals had been denied even though the attacker was 5 cm inside. And some goals were given even though the attacker was 8 cm offside. Is that any better?!

    Same is true for technology in cricket. It was meant to overcome the howler by an umpire. But it’s overused, takes away the character of the umpire in the game, is abused by the players and I also question whether it’s accurate as well.

    I think he's saying that part of Maradona's legend is that he's managed to score a goal with his hand in the World Cup and get away with it. Part of the fun in soccer/football is the ref's decisions and the controversies. Think of the 1966 England goal by Hurst: did it cross the line or did it not? Think of Thierry Henry's handball against Ireland. You get the point. Like it or not, part of the fun is the drama. While I am glad that teams can no longer can screwed over because of these things anymore (at least theoretically), a part of me misses this kind of drama and controversy.

    VAR is definitely ruining football. It not only slow down the game, but also make football boring to watch because of those prolonged stoppage. Also referees made far more errors with VAR. Not to mention that I'm a hardcore traditionalist and hate any kind of changes and technologies being used in football and any other sports.

    VAR has come to end the unfair traits of Big Name teams winning by illegitimate goals, that happens a lot in World Cup matches. I enjoy watching "underdogs" beating the "Big Names" in Football. The Problem is the Weird Laws like being offside by an Elbow.

    The human element which is an important ingredient in football is slowly being removed; this element makes fans pay and enjoy the game but hard lucky this is on its way out of football. It MUST be checked! The assistant referees who are specialists in judging offside are slowly becoming obsolete and unnecessary. There will be no soup left in the game of football to deserve its rightful position in the world of entertainment. In my view, football betting may have a hand in this!

    Yes VAR is ruining football. VAR is ruining football because it takes the spirit, atmosphere and emotion out of football. Referees rely more and more on VAR and don‘t have to stick up to their decisions anymore. For god‘s sake, in the Atletico vs. Leverkusen game the ref ended the game AND gave a penalty afterwards, WTF! Football lives with these types of decisions where one team might‘ve been luckier than the other. If the refs feel like they‘re not capable of making these decisions, then what are they doing in top tier football? I‘d rather have two linesmen each side and two assistants constantly surveilling the penalty box and give an immediate signal if there was a foul. Not this 5 minute, monitorwatching cr@p. If a player is offside by an micro-distance, they go and watch TV for 5 minutes. The ref should just make his decision, onside or offside and then stick with it. In the end, behind the VAR is also just a human that makes faulty decisions, so why even bother having it? VAR should only be used in situations where there should‘ve been a clear red card, or, where a red card was given that should not have been given. This is my opinion.

    After VAR was introduced Arsenal finished 8th twice in a row...Arsenal players are the ones to get highest numbers of red cards in the premier league because of lame decisions of Video Assistant Refrees. Whereas Manchester United progressed because they are the ones who largely benefited from VAR. Brundo Farnandez made his name in the premier league bacause of VAR.

    Football isn’t supposed to be fair and the charm is that a team could win on a mistake from the ref. I miss the older days of football when controversial situations from the refs and players would have to be seen at the moment and if the ref didn’t see what happened the game would go on, just like life goes on. I started to boycott football many years ago and I was crazy for football, but this tech have destroyed the game I once loved.

  • @Scientist19exe
    @Scientist19exe3 жыл бұрын

    Offside tech is coming soon. Next, Var needs to improve on penalty check. When they check penalty after 5 mins of non stop play it feels disjointed. Imagine opponent scores a goal and penalty check disallows it. Maybe stop the play for penalty check. Or VAR refs grow some balls and say whether its penalty or not quickly instead of referring it to Ground ref. And show the players what the VAR is checking instead of having them stand around in confusion.

    Exactly, I don’t get why people complain about VAR for offside decisions, except when it’s too close to call and they still disallow a goal. People don’t realise that the problem is the current offside rules, not VAR. in my opinion offside should be judged by the player’s feet and nothing else.

  • @SamMC08

    @SamMC08

    Жыл бұрын

    It's not black and white when the VAR official decides which frame to draw the lines on. How do you decide when the ball 'leaves' the players foot? How do you decide at which point on their arm they're offside from? On all of the marginal offside decisions you can move to a previous or later frame for a different decision. Goal line technology is great because there's only two variables, everything else is disastrous. VAR doesn't work on subjective decisions that involve the movement of players.
