Is UNESCO World Heritage Designation a good thing? Or could it potentially do more harm to the very sites it intends to protect? Betty just wanted to do some research on how to better conserve local heritage architecture in Toronto and ended up going down a rabbit hole where she learned a bunch of stuff about how UNESCO works. She currently concludes that it is in crisis. #WithCaptions

Some would probably translate Chang'an as "Perpetual Peace" or "Everlasting Peace." I like my translation better lol but you can fight me about it on Discord: discord.gg/4DWvahY94U

Great video and thank you for having my voice on! As a big history nerd I'm a bit biased towards UNESCO cuz preserving history is my literal job. I had no idea how the organization actually works and this was a great explanation

Great video on UNESCO, though my only complaint about the organisation is the lack of recommendations and future-proofing of historically important sites. For example, just recently Liverpools waterfront was delisted from UNESCO. Which I have mixed feelings about because Liverpools Victorian docks up until recently had large dilapidated buildings and derelict land, which was very unattractive. On the other hand some of the development on Liverpool's Waterfront has been inappropriate and out of place for the area. But at the end of the day UNESCO never gave any clear direction for potential development, or rejuvenation of the docks.

Hmmm, apparently I need to explore more of the UNESCO sites back home! (Though Vieux Quebec is wonderful! Do visit sometime. :) Also I don't think I realized just how extensive and expansive the UNESCO list had become. I never knew just what, if any, 'real' protections or enticements the designation came from, or that it was something you had to submit for, so thank you for illuminating it all for us. What's meaningful to preserve is a great conversation to, ongoingly, engage in. To which... count my vote for certain Brutalism buildings! (And I don't think I knew you were from Xi'an, I visited in 2012. :)

I find that, unless you are an arts/ architecture major we don't get a strong case for the conservation of culturally relevant sites in our education. News always refer to economy or o blic health as preasing issues, (and they are) but the agenda is rarely set for site preservation

After recently coming across your videos and watching/enjoying several of them, I recommended you to nebula: She provides thoughtful and careful evaluations on architecture. Her evaluations are less based on personal opinions but considerate critiques based on a good understanding and care for architecture, society and culture.

Withdrawing from UNESCO feels like something the US would do. Also I had no idea the US withdrew. It also feels Trumpian but then again the process essentially started before Trump.

Just read about why they withdrew...it's even worse than it seems. Basically it was a protest because a monument in Palestine was declared a UNESCO heritage site. And the reason you're not surprised is because it's not the first time this happens... Unfortunately. THEY ALSO DID IT WHEN THE USSR GOT THEIR FIRST SITE. At this point I'm surprised Cuba has heritage sites...

Sadly, the integrity of UNESCO being compromised by UNGA quid pro quo politics as the Organization for Islamic Cooperation and the various Western Leftist-Marxist Members of that Brothel on the East River. What they did regarding Jerusalem was made them out to be lying whores who betrayed everything they purportedly stood for. I quit contributing to UNESCO at that time. And no, I’m neither an Obama or Trump supporter.
