Awesome video, loved the bit on sid buuuut.... The bed sheets, lunch box etc that Andy gets for his birthday are all Buzlightyear merchandise. That's why his room changes drastically with posters and everything, it's actually a pretty awesome present and well coordinated, probably by Andy's Mom(the real hero).

The reason nobody cares about Al's misfortune is because he is a bad dude. If Andy's mom had legitimately sold Woody, it would be a sad, but very different story of Al getting screwed over. But she said no and then he stole from a child.

No. He was just a very ambitious man that saw the true value that toy held that Andy’s mother never could have and he took him. Honestly I’d do the same. If I was wondering from place to place and all a sudden came across my universes version of the most famous and expensive antique toy at some crap road side yard sale and the person who owned said sale wouldn’t sell it because her bratty kid just LoVeS it then hell yea im taking it when she looks away too.

Here are two things the movies never explain: 1) Why is it that the Humans can't know that toys are alive and 2) What consequences (if any) exist for Humans knowing toys are alive? In Jim Henson's "Secret Life of Toys" it was established that if a toy was caught by a Human moving or otherwise being alive, that the toy will die. Thus a clear reason on why to never reveal themselves to the Humans. What are the consequences in Toy Story for this? I mean, they showed themselves to Sid, why not show themselves to Andy? What rules or codes are they living by that continues this?

The kids did bring things that Andy used. They all brought Buzz Lightyear merchandise (posters/bedspreads etc.) and COME THE BIG REVEAL Mom brings out the actual buzz lightyear toy.

You're not alone I still have most of the stuffed toys I had when I was a kid. just about last year I gave up some of them to the woman's shelter. Oh and my fav toy is a purple rabbit I named Buneta... I put a kids hair tie around her neck so she has a neckless :)

On the first point... What if it's because if people knew toys were alive, then they wouldn't get played with, and getting played with means their model is popular, and if their model is popular, more of them will be made, so it's reproduction and some kind of subconscious evolution-y crap?

I've always hoped that the collector had employed traveler insurance for his stuff...

I diddnt have a lot of friends as a kid, so it is a downright battle to make me get rid of stuffed animals. Like from the age of 5 if someone tried to get me to give away a stuffed animal, I would just cry. My moms theory is that my stuffed animals were kind of a surrogate for actual friends who stuck around. Point being, that's Andy! Sad, huh?

+Emily Black Not really, being a boy I didn't get stuffed animals or dolls, just action figures (which are still awesome!!!) And yeah I was super-protective of my toys and began writing my name under all their feet after seeing Toy Story 1 for the first time. But I grew up to have healthy relationships with people and have good friends. It isn't sad. It's normal. :) And i'm willing to bet you turned out well too.

The toys didn't _choose_ anything...they're clearly _enchanted._ They actually have no choice but to keep their owners from knowing they're alive. ...except when they come out to Sid, true. But that's for the protection of Andy, which is a toy's _real_ purpose: the emotional well-being of their owner. That's the reason they exist. So they were allowed to break the enchantment in the service of their child. So the toys aren't so much alive as they are magic. They're golems. They're basically half of the Pinocchio myth.

+Adrian .C It's speculated that Woody is either passed down from Andy's father or mother. In Toy Story 2, his mother mentions that Woody is an heirloom. It is also quite obvious in Toy Story 2 that Woody is a toy from the era of black-and-white television, meaning that he is far older than Andy and therefore has had previous owners. The thought goes that Andy's mother was the original owner of Jessie, Woody's sidekick in the original television show. She met Andy's father and discovered that he still had a Woody doll that, unlike her, he had kept, presumably passed down by Andy's grandfather. Eventually, Andy's parents divorce. The reason that Andy keeps or (wants to) Woody at the end of Toy Story and Toy Story 3 is not because he likes Woody more than Buzz, it's because Woody was a gift from his now divorced or even deceased father. All the other toys he kept because they feel like peripherals to Woody. Andy's mother on the other hand, has stopped caring about the toys. She cares about Andy. In Toy Story 2, she wants Andy to keep his toys, because she knows how unhappy Andy would become if he lost his only remaining connection to his father. However, if it weren't for that, Woody is just a bad reminder of her former husband. By Toy Story 3, she (rightfully) thinks that Andy has outgrown his toys. She does not mean it in a vindictive way, but she subconsciously hopes that Andy will donate Woody, in the hopes that he will also outgrow his father's shadow.

That would only make since if they hadn't of messed with Sid. Also they only are awake when Andy isn't around so that means that Andy spends all of his time away from his toys thinking about what they are doing. He's a messed up kid, sure, but you'd have to be autism levels of messed up to be that off.

I really like this segment. I love the way you host it: how you combine nerdy analysis and expressive speech, or how you argue with the format of your own show. Seeing a host that's uncomfortable with time limits and other aspects of public speaking is fresh and IMHO adorable.

The toys were all given to him by his father, who is never mentioned in the films. Andy can't let go of them because he wants to have them when his dad gets back. It's not until Toy Story 3 when he grows up and lets go of ever seeing his dad again. *drops mic*

7:48 did Dan just say that "Buzz" is an analog for Neil Armstrong and not "Buzz" Aldrin?

In reference to the "not one of them brought a present that Andy used, ever" comment, in the Buzz-replacing-Woody montage, his bed sheets did change along with everything else in his room, so they could have been the sheets that the birthday boy brought.

This is one of my favorite episodes so far! You're a great writer, Dan. I could listen to you talk about your adorable childhood for at least like 30 minutes.

I love this series and channel, and in typical OPCD fashion I'm going to disagree with you. By the logic of this movie, the purpose of toys is to play and be played with. Al is a collector. Someone who wants to put all toys back in their boxes and vacuum seal them away from their designed purpose. Now, putting an object on a shelf to be admired is one thing. Andy did that with his toys for years. But imagine being stuck in a glass box, untouched and unloved... forever. At least with Andy, the toys can be passed down to other children or "wake up" when Andy leaves the room. And even if they don't passed down and end up collecting dust in some attic, at least Woody and the gang will be together and freely interact with each other for the foreseeable future. The movie that they need to make isn't how toys became content servants. It's obvious that humans don't trust things are different, and the moral questions of talking, thinking animated inanimate objects would cause many problems. Most likely, the self aware toys - knowing and wanting to embrace their purpose - were content in being the not so imaginary friends of children being passed down from generation to generation. The real question, and the real movie that needs to be made, is what about those toys collecting dust in the attic? What about the toys that have lived through two world wars and the holocaust? They are still alive. Living with their toy friends flipping through old photo albums watching the kids that played with them grow old and die while the just continue to exist. Imagine watching generations of a family grow up and interact. Imagine a crawlspace of memories piling up over the years, new toys moving into the attic. Imagine spring cleaning and the fear of not being considered a valuable enough memory to keep, only to go to good will and bought by someone else who will love you, play with you, and put you in another attic. *Circle of Life music plays in the background"

I FEEL SO BAD FOR SID NOW

Sid's destruction of toys becomes infinitely more disturbing when you think about the fact that he combines some of the toys. Like the baby doll head on the mechanical spider legs or the fishing pole with Barbie legs. He took 2 immortal toys, cut them in half, and stuck them together! Does 1 half just suddenly control the other half? Can the 1 toy still feel and move his original pieces only, leaving them to live in constant agony and making it nearly impossible to move or function? We know from when Woody's forehead burns from the magnifying glass that toys feel pain, so how would it feel to have your head ripped off and shoved onto a set of sentient metal spider legs?

The segment about Andy not getting rid of his toys was hilarious!

What about the process of creating toys? The prequel would also show the toymakers who secretly know the toys are alive but for some reason don't share this information. Also, how do they become sentient? If they're not sentient until they are fully formed, how are they sentient when disassembled by Sid? If they are sentient before being formed, is everything sentient?

Maybe the toys slowly became animate from normal toys over time. Like, over time, some toys became alive. Then some more, and eventually all of them. They continue pretending to be inanimate when humans are around because that's just how it's always been. No great catastrophe, no great war. Childhood saved.

I'm surprised he didn't mention the fact that the big villain of the entire series so far is Andys Mom. Think about it, every major conflict is caused by her (even though inadvertently) Plus by the end of the second movie she has to know the toys are alive or she is insane. First Movie: She's the one who buys Buzz and causes the conflict between Woody and Buzz, She's the one who says he could only bring one toy, imagine how things would have changed if Andy was allowed to bring both Woody and Buzz. Second Movie: If she wouldn't have given Andy that extra time to play Andy never would have torn woody. And She's the one who had the yard sale and tried to sell wheezy, thus getting Woody into Als hands. And Third Movie: She's the one who mistakes the toys for garbage when they are in garbage bags. And she's the one who drives them to the daycare center. And how does she know the toys are alive? Well, After She puts woody in money box in the second movie Al of course steals woody, You're telling me she didn't notice that? She didn't once look in that box and notice woody wasn't there anymore? Not to mention the fact that that night a bunch of andys toys went missing, despite the fact that Andy wasn't there. Then a few days later, when she isn't in the house the toys magically come back in different positions to where they were, Woody included who is in better condition then before. Plus 2 new toys, Andy thanks her for those toys but she would know that she didn't get them. So how did those toys get there. Its one of two things, either they are alive, or she has no problem with someone apparently, stealing woody from that money box, breaking into her house, stealing more toys, then breaking into her house later and putting the toys back and put 2 new toys there for andy. She's pretty nuts if she's okay with the second part.

And as to your longer premise about her knowing, it can be explained: She was very busy during the Yard Sale, and with a few days of Andy off to camp she's probably more busy trying to get her work done (she's a single mom after all), so it's likely that she acted dismissively. Every time a toy gets stolen she assumes it's "still around... right where you left them." Even when Andy got distraught in the first film, she was more about moving to their new house than looking for a missing set of her (much younger) son's toys. The "Welcome Home Andy" scene at the end of Toy Story 2 could be explained in two ways: 1. The toys could've simply made that themselves and waited there for Andy to find them. Or 2. They could've come up with another plot to first appear to Andy's mom and then SHE put them up there. If it is 1., then we can assume that the mystery of how they got there just never got made. Andy's mom probably thought he got new toys at toy-camp, and never heard him say "thanks mom." It's possible that they never brought it up, either of them. Plus, Woody returns with his torn arm, she suspects nothing. If it is 2., then we are robbed of a subplot.

+Mrcool210 You assume that parents have the time and the desire to give a single damn about their kids toys. As long as things are clean and the kid isn't screaming bloody murder about a silly childs toy, the parents have no reason to pay attention to the toys beyond buying a new one for holidays or birthdays. Parents have bigger problems to deal with then a possibly missing, but most likely misplaced, toy that they can replace with a trip to the toy store. Keep in mind that something that may be important to you is not necessarily important to others and therefore they will be less likely to pay attention to it and notice if something is different or missing.

+This_is_a_Conundrum I would hope that, if your kid has one specific toy they're extremely attached to, you'd care about that toy at least a little bit. I'm an adult and my parents are still fully aware of my favorite childhood toy. They would feel terrible if they accidentally lost or damaged it, even now, despite it having been a good 15+ years since it stopped being the most important thing in the world to me. It's true that something being important to one person doesn't mean it's important to others, but hopefully something extremely important to a child would be at least somewhat important to their parents.

Always been curious about this stuff. Did Andy's toys have to lay there, perfectly motionless, while Andy hit puberty and started masterbating in his bedroom? Just imagine all of the things those toys heard when one of the humans thought they were alone. One thing in the first movie that ALWAYS bugged me was when Slinky was stretched when they were trying to get Buzz, Woody and RC back in the movie truck. There is no way in hell that he would go back to his original spiraled shape. He'd be fucked

just so you know there's a scene in the last you story where Sid (out a young man who looks exactly like Sid) is a garbage man ... kinda surprised you didn't say anything about that...

After Toy Story 3 I just assumed that Andy got interested in animation or creative writing, and was going to college for that reason. And he was reluctant to part with his toys because he often used them to inspire his stories. Which makes him... odd but not THAT odd. Imagine if you were an prodigy in the field of architecture and you used wooden blocks to make house designs even into high school? Would you want to get rid of them off the cuff? Probably not. (Oh, by the by, Frank Lloyd Wright allegedly used children's wooden blocks to come up with a lot of his first crude effort designs. Which he obviously did well into adulthood)

I always thought all the lame presents at Andy's party were Buzz Lightyear themed items. You see new bedsheets and a new lunchbox, both Buzz-themed, later on, which I took to imply that they were the bedsheets and lunch box from the party.

Point being, the theme for the presents was clearly staged beforehand. Bunch of Buzz themed stuff to build up to one awesome toy from his mom. Andy didn't catch on and was still amazed because he's a kid, a race notorious for their underdeveloped reasoning.

I want to sympathize with Sid, but there's just one problem: he's a dick to Hannah. It's one thing to bully toys, lt's another to bully your sister. Al stole Woody, so sympathy went out the window.

Please never stop making these OPCD videos. You're completely adorable, funny, and smart. These always make me laugh. (Secretly the only reason I subscribed to Cracked)

I always saw Woody as representing his father and Buzz being a representation of his new step-dad. With the first movie being about accepting the new "dad" without forgetting about the old dad.

I always though that the kids at Andy's birthday in the first Toy Story are implied to all be giving him gifts revolving around Buzz Lightyear, which is revealed in the bedroom transition a bit later into the film...

Weren't the gifts at the birthday party Buzz Lightyear accessories? Andy's bedspread turns from cowboy to Buzz shortly after the party... Awesome episode!! This was my favorite movie for many years and I've never thought about these things. Very insightful... and truthful! wow :)

I always though that a family member gave him the bedsheets, like the aunt that always gives you clothes. And they weren't a random gift, they were the Buzz Lightyear bedsheets he wanted.

(Someone may have already mentioned this but) I've always accepted my mom's interpretation of the weird birthday gifts -- all the other kids' families were in on the fact that Buzz Lightyear was a surprise gift, so all of their gifts are hints leading up to that surprise. Andy soon redecorates his entire room to be Buzz Lightyear themed -- including Buzz Lightyear bedsheets.

I can't wait for next week's episode!!!

Well Cracked you've done it again. Made me re-evaluate everything I loved as a child and spiral down into a pit of nostalgic despair when I realized that I've loved psychopaths and murderers all along. This hate/love relationship is still going strong

this is one of my favorite series of all time

Here is a few theories about why the toys have such servitude: 1. Not all of them do. It could be possible that there are toys out there which rebel, but the toys we see in this movie are all content with servitude. 2. They simply like to be played with. They don't consider it so much as being an evil servitude things, but also realize that revealing themselves as being alive could cause humans to fear them and cause harm to them(our history as demonstrated as such).

My question is what is the cut off for toy sentience? Do you have to have a face? What about the RC car, it only has eyes. And what about RC cars that don't have eyes. And if they don't need a face, then what are the consequences of things like tops and dice being sentient, but with no way to observe or interact with the outside world? What kind of hellish existence is that?

I’m in my 30’s & still have A LOT of my toys (& not in that geek-culture “it’s a collection” way). It’s actually very common when your childhood was shortened in some way eg: having to grow up fast due to extreme illness. You hold on to the last vestiges of a childhood you were never able to outgrow naturally. It’s like “arrested development”: The more trauma you suffer, the more tightly you hold on to what little happiness you did have. Andy clearly went through something, maybe it’s related to the absence of his father (or other mother, just another parent) or something bad happens between movies but I feel like the toys would know if someone/something hurt their boy

If one of the toys dies, Andy will not notice and the living toys will play with there dead friend

subscribed to Cracked because i accidentally came across the "After Hours" segment which i found to be hilarious..but i would have to say "OPCD" has quickly become my favorite sketch coming out of Cracked.

So...Andy obviously has no friends and that's really sad. There's even a clip from the very beginning of Toy Story 3 where a younger-than-we've-ever-seen-him Andy is having a birthday party where only his toys are in attendance (his sister apparently not being born yet). No wonder the kid has abandonment issues.

I feel sorry for you re Andy.. I watched TS3 just before going off to uni and sure I was uncomfortable when I took a few soft teddies/hadrosaurs along with me (3 shelves - one for books, one for dvds... what was I meant to use the third shelf for, photos of my loved ones?! That is a way weirder thing for an adolescent to do) but there was nobody on my block - and nobody in the other blocks I visited - that didn't have at least one or two toys they had brought from home. Except for the girl that had smuggled in African land snails, and those required weekly foraging for bones, surely a few toys are preferable to that? Sure nobody gives a crap about a mr potato head but if you held up two of my overlooked toys that were obviously meant to be a pair, I would've asked my mother to stitch their hands together before they went to the charity shop (yeah... that happened) Either way, I picture Andy going off to uni and finding that he's the only one on the corridor that hasn't brought a single memento of his childhood and I'm pretty sure everyone would assume he had been neglected.
