Im a tourism student and all of your videos are really helpful to us..thank you❤
I just discovered your channel and love the content. I am integrating multiple videos into a course on sustainable tourism and protected areas that I will be teaching with the University of Montana. This video too shares the same engaging format and what you stated is reasonable enough. The catch though is that planning does not provide any of the benefits that you list in this video. What provides them is implementation of the plan. I don’t say this as a play on words. I say this because throughout the video you assume that once the plan is done, it will simply be implemented which is why you don’t mention it at all. This is typical when the underlying orientation of planning is Technical Rationality or more specifically in the literature Rational Comprehensive Planning. In short this mentality sees planning as a purely technical rational approach: follow the steps, do good research, apply expert knowledge, and you will have the optimal solution (and the word “optimal” appears in the video). The problem is that most plans are not implemented or only partially so. This is well documented both in the literature and in experience. The reason is that because the process is perceived as a scientific approach, it ignores the social process and politics which confound good science, and assumes the world is tame and slowly changing in order for the optimal solution to work. But in the real world, this approach usually ends in failure. Thus the social process of planning is as important as the technical planning document. And the process usually requires power sharing, multiperspective taking, building trust, creating a process perceived as equitable and fair, and a plan design that allows frequent updating. There is a lot of literature on this but I would note one in particular, and self-interested, is my book co -written with international renown specialist in sustainable tourism and protected areas, Dr. Stephen McCool, called The Future Has Other Plans: Planning Holistically to Conserve Natural and Cultural Heritage (Fulcrum Books, 2016). And since you mentioned in this video that you are going to produce videos on the planning process (if you haven’t done so already), I encourage you to consider the people-side as well as the technical side. Keep up the great work!
