To solve the waterproof issue, they should have a wide zippered flap underneath the magnetic flap that can be left open on normal rides but if it starts raining one can also zip it up.
I have the blue one! Finally, a magnet closure that is arthritis friendly. It's my fave, too!
I have a bolt on Mag Tank 2000 for my Salsa Warroad. I only bought the bigger version because Revelate was sold out of the smaller version, but it's been great. Sometimes, it rubs on my knees slightly during a standing climb, but definitely not a deal-breaker. Great for daily rides- especially if you're doing longer distances and want to pack ample snacks in one bag and I'm glad I have the extra storage when I do my next tour.
Great bag. I used it last summer on a cross country bike tour. Fantastic for easy access to snacks and other small items. I trimmed the velcro short on my Sutra.
I use the Mag tank 2000, and it's awesome! Perfectly fits a beer bottle or a phone too, so it's even a nice everyday bag for shorter pleasure rides.
Like this. Looking for a small bag to add to my touring outfit. Thanks for the review. Take care, Al
I have the same bag and absolutely love it!
Would love to see a video on replacing velcro with paracord on bike / frame bags. My knicks are all torn up from velcro and would love to swap to something better.
I love it as well. I even put it on my road bike. Just need a 'Okay Roady' sticker. I've never had any food come out even while mountain biking, and I mostly carry food so if it gets a little wet, nbd.
Thanks for this info, Russ. When looking for this top tube bag, I found Revelate's Mag-Tank 2000 that holds 50% more than the original Mag-Tank.
I picked up the medium size bag a little while ago. It seemed to slide around quite a bit so I moved the rubber mount to the outside of the stem. This let me cinch it tight and now sits solidly in place. It is a bit large but getting used to it. You can stuff quite a bit in there.
Thanks Just ordered the 2000 version, as it is about 50% larger. I also got the Jerrycan. I’ll let you know how I like it after my next trip. I love your reviews.
Still definitely envious of that sunshine. Around 30 degrees and raining here in PDX most mornings. That is a pretty slick closure with the magnetic latch.
It’s a great bag, i use it on my Mtn bike. It doesn’t even open when you go otb. 🤘
Just a heads up! I just found out that the bolt on version doesn't come with spacers for the bolts. You need to buy those as well as no regular top tube bolt heads are big enough to stay in the punch-throughs in the bag.
Love your videos! Your reviews helped me narrow in on a new Norco Search XR steel and I love it! #supplelife
Love the magnet closure on my Wolf Tooth BarBag, but - like you Russ - I have yet to find one of the little accessory bags we can buy that are trully waterproof - the BarBag made a highly impressive portable miniture swimming pool once a downpour hits. Well it did until I bought myself a 1/4 grommet/eyelet kit on Amazon and stuck in two stem side drip holes - no more wet fingers and bye bye watery snacks.
On the inside of the bag, each side has a Velcro closure to hold plastic sheets to stiffen the sides. I placed a shower cap on one side to cover the Magtank if it starts raining hard and in the other side I have some money
Great review. I recently bought their med. frame bag and their saddle bag (Terrapin?). Looking to get out into the mountains and desert east of San Diego this late spring. Thank u.
I use this bag bike-packing. I cram the hell out of it and the clip stays on. No bouncing out of small items, when there is less in there. $59 is dirt cheap, IMO. Great bag.
I like the simple, easy closure but the lack of water resistance is a deal killer for me. Great review, though!
Just ordered the bolt on version from REI last night. Apparently so did lots of others as item is back ordered and will take 30 days to arrive. Oh well sounds like it’s worth the wait.
I like how the front kinda makes an air scoop to help your bike slow down really fast after stopping pedaling.
Nice idea,... In my experience no matter how much I spend it's always the zipper that breaks before the bag wears out.
I found A really affordable top tube bag that rivals the apidura racing top tube bag , and it is the Bike Top Tube Bag Gravel 1L Waterproof which is about $30 USD
Might be a tough thing to do, but I wonder if they could reshape the lid so it went down the sides a bit more to help with keeping the weather out of the bag? Make it a bit more like a "hat" vs just a flap? I really like the idea of this bag due to the closure, but the lack of rain protection has kept me from making the plunge.
Agreed, it’s the perfect size. Large enough without getting in the way. The closure is Boss lol. Yeah that word is better than Dope 😉
I recently bought a top tube bag from Pro (shimano) which has elasticated webbing on the side for snacks.
I used this bag for all my training rides, a gravel century, and DK200 last year, and it was flawless. It fits A LOT of stuff, and I used to as my quick access fuel bag. It even fit my Plus-sized iPhone. The elastic strap on the closure is also adjustable so you can cinch it down pretty tight as well to keep the rain out.

Revelate puts out some quality bags. I use them for all of my bike packing gear. Pricey? Kinda. You get what you pay for though.
Nice but the overhang on top front looks like a scoop that would funnel the rain inside. I realize that this is not a waterproof bag but......Revelate does make nice equipment
Where did you get this fancy mount for your cycle computer? Very nice!!
I have a magtank as well and it is used daily. I have the bolt-on version on my journeyman. I have yet to find a better alternative.

Just curious if you've experienced any paint damage on the top tube with the bolt on version?
I use 2 of that same bag it works get for small stuff I don't want to dig in my handle bar bag
You need to revie w rear top tube bags like Oveja negra or rogue panda bags
How does this bag compare to the 1L Apidura race top tube bag with magnetic closure?

Apidura is waterproof and more aero, costs around the same. Both are great bags!
Good video… That’s one concern I had about small things popping out because of lack of closer… Also I see you use the cube light… Tell me about that… Have been thinking about that for multiple uses photography as well as a bike light and camping light… All in one… Any input☮️

I found mine on Amazon…some off brand. For like $10
I'm about 5ft and have one on my XS 43cm roadbike though mine is the Larger Mag version! Thought I would surely hit my knees into it since it's relatively just tooO long/big for my frame, but I took a risk and went for it. Turned out...I rarely hit my knees with it since the bottom end's so tapered, and when standing up to climb, I hardly hit the sides of the bag, also. It was a surprise! Having said that, the only "issue" I personally have is the standover clearance (obviously! ;p) because I'm cramped into this little top tube space. Indeed, my womanhood doesn't like the rub (no pun intended), but I can just move one of the pedals up-top, and thus giving myself a better crotch clearance. No problem whatsoever since 99% of my stops is using curbs from saddle. From a minimalist point of view, I wanted this larger size specifically to store food for day-packing. Fits all my main premade food in there: a whole banana, couple burritos, few spring rolls, and some more snacks. Awesome Bag!! In terms of waterproof, I pull the elastic chord to cut slack for tighter closure, and where the "awning" top bag flap is, I made a little dart in the middle and used a sturdy paper clip to hold it, then viola! you have a legit lid to shield things inside from any kind of rain. Awesome Bag score again!!

BTW, what I love about it also is the two big "hidden pockets" aka stiffened side panels, which I use for storing small things like ear buds, pencil, paper, spare phone batteries, alcohol swaps etc. You really gotta have to separate the velcro tabs at the top to reveal the "pockets". :)
I have bolt-on version. It is the best top tube bag ever!!

Just curious if you've experienced any marring of the paint on your top tube?
@wichersham
2 жыл бұрын
@@GSPIzzy1665 not really. Bolt on type really locks the bag down firmly. No wiggle while riding.
Have one and have been frustrated by flap coming open on rough terrain and difficulty getting it to fit on small diameter (steel) top tube without excess velcro flopping all over and snagging shorts.

Apidura race top tube ?
Does it open quickly and throw your stuff all over the trail when you crash? I like it, but wonder if a closed zipper is more secure?
@PathLessPedaledTV

Have never had it open unintentionally.
@bbbqmac

A zipper is definitely more secure, but the mag-closure is so convenient that it's worth it. The biggest risk is throwing something small enough that it could sneak out the side, I doubt it would fully unlatch in a crash unless the tab got pulled in just the right way.
Really wish my carbon bike had mounts for a bolt on... any way they could be safely added or is that a big no no?
@tubesockets120v

Big no...
Would probably be OK for Southern California but for those of us further north along the Wet Coast, LOLNOPE. A proper water-resistant zipper on a top tube bag is absolutely mandatory.

It’s not made out of paper. I’m sure it would survive some rain. Amazingly I’ve used the bag in Oregon and Montana and it hasn’t melted.

@bbbqmac

@C.M. Cycles Exactly, the material is at least water resistant. The sides don't seal, but there shouldn't be a ton of water coming up from the bottom, if you are putting expensive cameras in there might want to pack a ziplock bag though.
Hey guys, I‘m looking for a bag, that can be used as a normal backpack as well, so I can take it with, when I‘m off my bike. I found something like this, as a bag that attaches to the carrier thing on your rear wheel (sorry I don’t know how you call those), but I think that looks horrendous. If any of you guys have found something like this, please hit me up
have it, love it, but man that steer stem velcro is nonsense.. that said, I cut mine of and just the wide strap on the bottom is enough! great for sweet potato fries on long road rides
What's the "white camera" at minute 1:56", please? I'm assuming it shoots video? Thx

Don’t you find that ANY top tube bag is too much in the way when trying to get on or off the bike. When I need to stop I always move forward and straddle the too tube... and that’s when I find there’s not enough room for a bag there and for my crotch, especially if you have one of the smaller size bikes. 50cm 52cm etc.
Good review, thank you. However this bag would land in "poor design" category for me, it is yet another bag, when manufacturer knows in advance I will attach bag in point X. I hope in some near future all bags will have multiple points of attachment so you can attach it as you like. Fixed point is risky, because you buy expensive top tube bag, and later frame bag and you won't be able to use them both at the same time (same fixed points of attachment).
@PathLessPedaledTV

Its not that big of a deal. I just fold the Velcro strap on the frame bag out of the way.
I don’t think it would be suitable for UK conditions, rain would get straight in. Things bouncing out on technical terrain is not too good. I’ll keep looking for one that zips up

Not for me.
I like the older Revelate stuff before they went mainstream... I have three bicycles kitted out with the old stuff and they are still in 100%. The one thing I hate about bicycle people is that they all have to be like each other. I still have my 1989 Rock Combo and MB3 from when I was 15 and 16 years old. Made a gravel bike out of my 2003 Lemond Wayzata before it was a thing....
$60 a bag and $45 shipping... oh well...
