Why this festival in the desert was always a disaster waiting to happen - Burning Man 2023

In the middle of the desert in Nevada, The multi million dollar non-profit organization called the Burning Man Project has been holding an annual festival for 70,000 attendees for the past 31 years! Once considered an underground gathering for bohemians and free spirits, Burning Man has since evolved into a destination for social media influencers, celebrities and the Silicon Valley elite.
According to organizers, the 9 day festival is dedicated to community, art, self-expression and self-reliance in the middle of the black rock desert.
This remote, harsh environment has become a gold mine for bringing in profits into the millions each year, where festival tickets can cost up to $1000 per person, collectively spending more than $200 million to attend
In addition, participants spend uncounted millions more in donated materials and labor to create works of art for the festival, which then needs to be transported into the festival’s temporary metropolis, known as Black Rock City, and eventually torn down or burned after the event.
There are no paid artists and no official music lineup only spontaneous musical experiences
according to the 2017 tax documents. Nearly 40 percent of Burning Man's money, more than $15 million, was spent on salaries and other employee benefits, that year Marian Goodell, the CEO took home $261,000
whilst Festival goers are expected to be self reliant bringing everything they need for this 9 day event, including enough water, food supplies and even poo buckets which was especially needed this year due to the over flowing of the porta potties.
You could say they this years event was a more than just a wash out, its a total shit show.
Getting wet, muddy and bogged down is normally what a festival typically looks like where I’m from in the UK but the worst that can happen is getting a little bit sodden,
but for burning man this wash out is actually quite a dangerous situation, torrential rain in deserts is not something to take lightly, since there is little vegetation and extreme flash floods can occur.
Burning man 2023 is officially over but tens of thousands of people are trapped at the site, vehicles cant move due to the mud and clay, attendees have been told to ration supplies. Attendees are ultimately responsible for their own health and safety.
Extreme heat, extreme cold, and even extreme flooding are all on the cards, the nearest city, Reno is 93 miles away, approximately a 2 hour drive and on top of that the festival is located in The Black Rock Desert, which is 70 miles (110 km) long and up to 20 miles (32 km) wide.
Its essentially a huge, flat, prehistoric lake bed known as the playa, composed of a hardpan alkali, surrounded by majestic mountains, Daytime temperatures routinely exceed 100°F, with extremely low humidity. Just because this ancient lake bed is for the most part dried out it doesn't mean that it always 100% going to stay dry, since the geographical location is literally a giant basin with no outlets and it serves as a sink for the Quinn River.
Wildlife is everywhere in Black Rock Country, even on barren parts of the playa, whenever there are storms normally in spring, the dry lake periodically comes back to life dormant fairy shrimp eggs hatch when the dry lake bed floods. More than 250 species of neo-tropical migrant birds and many other water birds stop by for varying lengths of time. Migrating birds feed of the bounties the lake that's only a few inches deep has to offer. The dunes that surround the barren Black Rock Desert playa are habitat for kit foxes, antelope, ground squirrels, kangaroo rats, horned lizards, badgers, and rattlesnakes.
So what do you think?

Tickets for Burning Man are sold in a price-tiered structure, starting at $525 and going up to $2,750. Exactly… I was there, I organize a fairly large theme camp. There was no disaster by any true meaning of the word. It was an inconvenience while it was happening, but somewhat of a blessing in the end. The event went on longer, we partied at our camp and at neighbor camps through the rain, and after it dried things picked back up and we had some of the best man burn and temple burn nights I’ve seen out there. The struggle through the rain actually served to bond groups together as well… it was hard, but rewarding. And that’s the very spirit of the event anyway.

they dont leave garbage. no outhouses overflowed. the whole story is overblown. to keep their very expsensive permits they must completely clean up the site after the event. If a camp leaves a mess, they aren't allow to return. the burns are also cleaned up. as I said, it is a requirement of the permit. the media does weird stuff, including this site. Its not my thing, but I have friends who where there. a few people maybe panicked and complained, but most people just hunkered down and partied in their own camps and everyone helped each other. the vast majority of people don't show up with just 9 days of food. many camps have 2 weeks or more of food and they happily feed people who run out or just want a change. It is actually pretty cool some of the ways that they behavior. they could teach people a lot of lessons in how to get along and deal with hardship. It is sad to me that channel's like this don't give an accurate picture. some celebrities had to walk out and some people panicked and tried to leave early and got stuck. so what.. Is that your definition of a disaster? Lahaina is a disaster.. this was just a minor inconvenience and if you are an experienced camper, then you know that some of the most magical times are when the weather forces to you to hunker down. Especially if you have a group of good friends to hang out with. It is not everyones thing. so what. I don't care for going mud bogging but I think its perfectly okay for those who like it. I also don't play golf, but I dont' care if others do. They dont leave a mess and no toilets overflowed. they plan for these things. they couldn't get permits to go out there with that large of a group if they didn't.

And every pound of mud that built up on my space boots trudging through the sloppy butt mud for two days was totally worth it just getting to see Steely Dan play a surprise solar powered set at the trash fence with my uncle on Thursday night! And that giant three story birthday cake that was made completely out of recycled municipal waste coffee grounds and corn with all those cheerleaders on stilts spinning fire and dancing all over it right before it burned! OMG!! Life changing. I have basically stopped using running water and thrown away all my small appliances and also gone at least vegetarian after finding out that one camp down the street served us hot dogs made out of sparkle pony meat. OK, in hindsight, I guess yeah... burning man sucks. Don't go.

To experienced burners, 2023 just another burn. It is a harsh environment, from extreme heat to freezing nights. Anyone who was prepared just adapted and enjoyed themselves. The short time the porta potties were almost full was the only significant problem unless you had to leave on two days. To my knowledge no porta potties actually over filled and spilled on the desert. It is known and mentioned on the website that rain is possible and when it rains you need to wait it out and let it dry. Unusually that takes an hour or two, this year it took 2 days.

An awesome place to raise children at the time however I the class of 87, always wanted to go back there and see burning man I always guessed my friends at planet x people out there or to hippie music lovers as am I and I silver lucky to have lived around them and got to know them. I have not returned to the Black Rock desert or Gerlach Nevada since early 80s I was so sad to see what happened this year at burning Man. And it reminded me how as a child we got stuck on the Black Rock desert in our VW microbus and our whole family had to walk over twenty miles hoping we're walking in the right direction. Trying to make it back, after grocery shopping in Reno. So many memories of a life that will never be again. God bless and help everyone yes the dangerous and magnificent all-in-one. It's always great to read comments written by people who are quite literally “perfect” in all of their thoughts and actions. They love to point fingers at people with whom they disagree, and since they're “perfect”, they can freely judge other humans with contempt and condescension. Their ways are always unquestionably righteous, and they can do no wrong. Even though they have never experienced the event in question, they seem to have a godlike understanding of everything that is “The Burning Man Project”. But I digress… I've only attended the event four times, so perhaps it's better to allow people who have never stepped foot on the property to judge the situation from the worn-out computer chairs, from which they rarely move. Regardless, I'll make a few things a bit more clear for those who like to generalize entire groups of people based on a few incidents and rumors. During the four years I've attended, I never saw any “public sex acts” or open drug use. What people do in their own private spaces isn't my business. It's held on federal land, thus the land is patrolled by federal law enforcement, and people can be arrested for committing illegal acts. It's nothing near as crazy as people believe, and I know this first hand. The flooding at the festival didn't create panic, fear, or typical crowd psychosis that goes along with floods and other natural disasters. I just spoke to a close friend of mine who attended “The Burn” this year, and he said other than vehicles being stranded, the attitude at the event was positive, and attendees worked together to manage water and food. They were planning on being there for nearly ten days, so other than the mud being an issue, people there sheltered in place until the roads were dry enough to be driven on. Considering the huge number of people in a very small area, it's rather remarkable that attendees were able to exit the location in a calm and organized manner. There are still people at the event, but the last of them will be leaving soon. The friend I spoke to is still on the property, since he manages security and safety. There were no incidents or altercations to speak of, which is amazing considering the huge number of people in attendance. That's not surprising to me, considering the type of individuals who regularly attend Burning Man. Most people who attend are typically very independent, adventure seeking people who know how to keep their heads on straight no matter the circumstances they find themselves in. It's sad that so many people seem to be happy that this unprecedented flooding occurred. It seems that a lot of “good” people are wishing bad things to happen to attendees. Why not judge people who build their homes on the beach, or in fire-prone areas, or on the sides of volcanos and mountains, or in lowland areas prone to flooding… Nobody seems to celebrate when those people are hit with a natural disaster, and those places are KNOWN to be prone to natural disasters. We've never seen flooding like this in the desert, so everything carried on as usual. Even during and after the flood, people managed the situation incredibly well and did so by working together in an organized fashion. For that, they should be commended. Instead, a bunch of nasty, hate-filled, self-righteous pharisees spew hate and judgment from behind their keyboards. MOST of humanity is SICK, and the only cure for the disease is extinction. Sadly, most people don't give a damn about the truth, they simply want to make sure their subjective opinions are heard. It doesn't matter to them that actual truth doesn't support their opinion, they just want to point fingers and judge others. This world has changed... for the worse. People have become isolated from one another, they rarely seek adventure, and they'd rather give up their freedom for the pathetic illusion of "safety" that the government claims it can provide. There has never been a more wretched, disgusting, miserable, hateful group of humans on this planet, and because of that, the clock is ticking. All I can say in response is: “You shall be judged according to how you judge others.” Good luck.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The critics were just being honest and may or may not be perfect in judgment. I read different videos about Burning Man because of my curiosity. I did not feel well from the beginning when it is about self-reliance, self-expression and the burning of an artificial man etc. It is truly self-righteousness and a ritual with burning as a sacrifice to the pagan gods or goddesses. It does have a hidden agenda or involvement of darkness to me though I cannot judge if there were drinking parties and perverted sexual activities. I am a major prophet of God and I do have a great discernment from God. It is God's given gift because I love Jesus with all my heart. Many things are more complicated than what you think because it is unseen or spiritual. I hope you would become a born-again Christian soon. I do care about your soul in eternity. God loves you and when you call on Jesus, you shall be saved (Acts 2:21, 38, 4:12, John 3:16-18, Ephesians 2:8-10, Romans 10:8-12). God is rich in grace and mercy but He also convicts and punishes justly. He is the One you can trust. Worship Him only! May God richly bless you!

Sickened at the damage to this desert playa and region. The Bureau of Land Management has once again failed us for allowing our public wilderness to be used like this. The playa was ALREADY WET AND MUDDY before Burning Man even began this year, from Tropical Storm Hilary downpours days before the start.

You know, it wasn't as bad as the media is making it out to be. Most of the people who got stuck did so after being asked to remain in camp and to not drive until the playa, what we call the dry lake bed on which the event is held, dries back out, which it does fairly rapidly after rain like this. I was there and work in Traffic Ops so I do kind of have the inside story here. The media found the worst of the worst and has portrayed it as true for the entire event site-wide. I drove off playa yesterday, having finally been able to go off shift, and only passed one stuck vehicle, a truck and trailer. The driver clearly drove outside the marked lanes provided and paid the price. Do stupid things, win stupid prizes. If only they had followed instructions, you know? Also, there was no Ebola, no cannibalism, no dysentery, and FEMA never showed up so don't believe the rumors and hype the media have promoted. LOL Most of the people who got stuck during Exodus did so because they willfully disregarded strong urging to stay in place in camp and NOT drive on the playa until it had dried sufficiently to do so safely. They panicked and, well, people are dumb panicky animals. When we see one person flipping out, we tend to do the same thing. If you read the Survival Guide and paid heed to what it said prior to making your preparations, you would know to not drive on wet playa. Heck, don't walk on it unless you absolutely have to. It sticks to everything very thickly and dries like concrete. Those who got stuck will likely have to pay to be dug out of the playa. Last I heard before I left yesterday is that the usual tow companies that service Burning Man weren't going to do that until things dry out well because they don't want to get stuck themselves.

I was invited to Burning Man in 2000, I declined to spend the money and time, I have watched several videos of BM over the last 20 + years, and it has changed drastically. I think the concept & ART is amazing. I would have gone for maybe 3-4 nights at the most. I can’t imagine being out there for a week or more. The one thing I have difficulty with is the amount of trash that is generated by this event, it has to go somewhere, yes some major installation ‘s are burned, but that leaves behind unburned wood and other materials. The mostly volunteer crew that is left behind to clean it all up, I am only going to assume that they pay to have dumped in a land fill, same with all the Burners who take out what they brought in gets thrown away. There is no place called away, it ends up in a dumpster or at the curb side when they return home. I can’t imagine that there is anything after a week in Black Rock City that is not discarded. I lived in the California Desert for a couple of years and I can tell you, that fine sand gets in everything. My point here is Move this event to some other location, down scale it to a more manageable event, and keep the Burning of anything to a minimum. Welcome the Art, Music, & party atmosphere, I have told my friends that have been several times, that it is starting to look like more work than Fun. They agreed & have not been since around 2010 or so, Bigger does not mean Better. Just my take on this event. 😎

Right - but the BIG problem with Burning Man is it's in a very remote place away from city and county oversight and bylaws, and there is no infrastructure in place for it!! No stadium, no curfews, no paved roads, no emergency plans, no locals to hire to clean it up, etc. And once off the playa, hours of driving mostly on 2 lane remote highways to the nearest sizable city, Reno, NV. That is AND unlike in your part of the world, MUD (sticky, deep clay) on a desert playa is a serious issue. It's un-drivable, as we've seen. People were not prepared for historic levels of rain from the Tropical Storm Hilary + another huge weather system moving through a week later. it only rains out there once a year at best and usually a small amount. Just so you know, rain and mud here in the desert west is whole different story from the UK. Extremely different story. It would be like if one of your music festivals was hit with a 115 F. heatwave, and people were stuck 100 miles out in the middle of nowhere with no air conditioning and no way out.
