/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Now like many others I spent years and years waiting for a live action version of Sandman. The graphic novel is something that's always been close to my heart and just after I finished Uni I ended up getting a minimum wage job in a shop working about 30 hours a week. This gave me about £800 a month and after bills and food came out I was left with a little bit to spend on comics. Now at the time DC were slowly in the process of rolling out their gigantic Sandman Omnibuses. These came in at about £80 each which was a lot of money for me at the time. I saved and saved and saved up for them and eventually bought the first volume. I burned through it in the space of a weekend and even though I'd had the work hyped up to me quite a lot, I was still completely blown away by it. I then saved up and bought the second volume and the book just seemed to get better and better.
Now sadly due to my money issues at the time I had to sell both books but they've always held a close place next to my heart and everytime I hear about Sandman I think back to those days of when I was living week to week enjoying the simple things in life.
Hearing that Netflix was adapting a live action version of Sandman really piqued my interest and incase you don't know, bringing it to screen has been a massive endeavor for the creators. If you listen to the podcast Best Movies Never Made then you'll know they did a big breakdown of all the original scripts and it's clear there's been several people trying to get this off the ground.
Initially pitched as a movie it's now a ten episode tv show that stays very faithful to the comics.
Nowhere is this seen more than in episode 6 which adapts The Sound Of Her Wings and also Dolls house Part 4.
These are two of the best issues in the entire run and the reason that Netflix put them together is because they both study life and death.
In the first part of the entry we watch as Dream joins his sister Death as she goes about her daily routine of meeting people after they pass away. The second following Morpheus as he meets a man who has been granted immortality on the same date every one hundred years.
Now the first of these always struck a chord with me when I was reading it. Death is something that we all must face and it's still a subject that we know very very little about. People spend their entire lives either living with faith or in the absence of it and we all have our own thoughts and beliefs on what will be waiting for us.

I love the portrayal of death, she is kind and guides those so they aren't alone when they pass. It's the best version of death, one that we all hope to greet us. This episode was a masterpiece in film, each death hit harder than the last, in comparison to the deathless life of Hobb.

The line from Death about everyone having a lifetime happens much later in the series. Seasons of Mist if I remember correctly.
That last scene was just so delightful. Even after all these years of waiting, receiving no answers, and not even being close to guessing Dream’s identity, Hobb still elects to show up, and warmly welcomed him as an old friend.

I lost my son when he was only 1 day old after he fought extremely hard to live; coming back not once but twice. Watching the seen with Death taking the baby was very emotional for me because ot actually personified the way I think of my own son when I think of his death. I'd like to think that he is wrapped in grace feeling no hurt or pain, and although his loss is a wound that does not heal, I do find some comfort in knowing that he is okay. Facing death is extremely hard but I like to think that when we go, our spirits travel to light; it's the only thing that makes the loss bearable. I really feel like this episode embodied that since Death was so kind and that is why it was my favorite even though it made me cry.

This episode was a masterclass in how to take common tropes and execute them perfectly. Even if you can guess where each vignette leads, it's wonderful how well it plays out. @pilgrimbutter

The comics in the most part are short stories, so I think you'll be pleased. In fact if season 2 gets made, they'll adapt volumes 3 and 4. Volume 3 is full of short stories, from dreams of cats to Shakespeare and the deal he made with Dream. Volume 4 is more of a straight story that I won't spoil. I really recommend the comics, the drawings and Neil Gaiman's writing are really amazing. The show is a great adaptation, I really thought they were going to mess it up.
@notAshildr
Жыл бұрын
@@pilgrimbutter To me it feels like they might be skipping volume 3/incorporating it as standalone extras. They've already done Dream of a thousand cats (which came as a pleasant surprise, as they could have easily skipped it) and did Calliope, which just needed to happen for the story to move forward. I feel like they won't do the other ones I'd love to see Night Dream, and it does tie into the main arch, but you could easily skip it by merely changing details later on. I think Facade might get skipped entirely, as the TV series seems to try to steer clear of the superhero stuff and the characters are kind of one-off, and it doesn't even feature Dream, being a Death-centric story.

Hobb doesn't just lose his business; he loses his wife and son and the grief is too much for him. He loses the rest of his "life" in that time, but he realizes he has other chances as he is immortal.
This episode is just a masterpiece. The pacing and performances were flawless. I love the idea of Death being a gentle, kind being and taking the souls she needs to, without discrimination and without having to use fear or force. Episode 6 was seriously the best crafted episode of any television show I’ve seen in a long time. The music was amazing; the acting; the writing; the storytelling! The set design; the costumes; the lighting… I could go on and on. It was just so well done, and left me stunned. I hope this episode gets recognition and hopefully an award or two.
I also really loved the small change in the series, which is based on the fact, that in comics Dream was captured for about 70 years, so he just made it for the next meeting. In the series, Dream was captured for over a 100 years (because "present time" in the series is about 2020, which is 30 years after "present time" in comics - about 1990) so he missed the meeting in the 1989 (cause he was in captivity at the moment) and therefore their meeting after he got free was even more impactful. This subtle change of lenght of Dream's captivity is also shown in the fact, that in series Unity is Rose's great grandma, where in comics she is just grandma.
I've gone back and rewatched this episode more than a dozen times. It truly is perfect. Hob Gadling is one of my favourite characters from the story. And Death is done perfectly here. This episode is just non stop emotions.
I agree with you! Was just gushing over this episode. The Sandman is so relatable here. I was not only surprised and inspired by Hob Gadling's zest for life, but when he called Sandman out on his loneliness and the valued friendship they shared-- and the subsequent reunion-- that was the chef's kiss.
I'm re-watching specific episodes because they're so good. The story sticks on you and makes me re-watch them.
This was probably the BEST bit of television of the year. This show deserves an Emi for sure. Just WHAT have we got elsewhere that can compare? It had me on tears from the old man on. It was THAT poignant, that touching.

After the heaviness of episode 5 of The Sandman (24/7), episode 6 was needed. The catharsis of meeting Death and how she loves and takes care of humanity as people die and go into the beyond made journeying through the world and history through Hobb’s eyes even sweeter to watch. Even Neil basically said in an interview that beyond the hardness and hopelessness of the diner (at that point I can see many people not wanting to watch anymore because it was so hard to watch), there is Death and Hobb waiting for us to give us hope and new perspective on life again.
I cried so many times while watching this episode, even when i watched it for the second and the third time. It's a perfect work of art tbh

I watched this a few hours ago. Read the comics when I was 17 or 18, now it's 20 years later and I feel like Hob. I couldn't have dreamt of a more perfect adaptation. I was watching it with my dad, and I was having to breath a certain way to keep myself from sobbing. I have that choking sensation in my throat as I type these words. Thanks for highlighting this episode, can't wait to finish the first season. Side bar: I'm pretty sure Gaiman must be an actual wizard. He seems to have an arm and a leg in the ethereal realm, and whenever he grips something good, he brings it back for us. I'm so glad he's with us.
This entire episode is my favorite in the series, and my favorite two storylines in the Sandman comic. Death has always been one of my favorite comic book characters In Sandman - even though she has a job to do and it requires ferrying souls to the afterlife, she's happy to be their friend (especially if the person has no one). Gaiman did a wonderful job giving us his interpretation of Death. She's someone I would want to see when I pass away - a friend at the end.
I was there at the beginning, the graphic novels gave SO much comfort to a closeted trans girl, more than you will ever know. They came with me as I grew up, they were there when I came out. I had been out for ten years when Neil announced that Netflix was coming out with a live-action. I hoped that it would live up to the movie that's been playing in my head for the past thirty years. I cried so many times watching the season because it was everything I thought it would be, and more.
Everyone deserves a friend like Hob. Just beautiful portrayal of the character and amazing direction. It’s one of those impactful pieces of art that stays with you. Absolute must watch! 💯❤️
I have a t-shirt with an image of Death and that quote “You get what anyone gets. You get a lifetime.” I find it oddly comforting.

this series just has layers upon layers of meaning. i read the comics at different stages in my life and each time I visit, a different perspective becomes available. though the Diner episode (24/7) is, in my opinion, the best episode - i will place this in my most heart warming category. those who have experienced someone pass (I can't go into it as it's still raw for me even if it's been almost a year) and try to begin to live again - will definitely relate to this episode. no matter how you interpret it. i'm so glad Neil was involved in this because I don't think it would've turned out to be this good if he hadn't
the more perfect thing, it came after a darker, more depraved 24 hrs episode, this one was filled with so much hope and maybe the best parts about being human, which what the sandman comics do so well, explore humanity.
This is hands down one of the best episodes of TV I have seen in a while. Loved this one a lot
The episode was suprisingly my favourite by quite a bit. Neils depiction of Death makes me feel calm rather than stressed out when I think about how sudden it all can end. And the dynamic between Dream and Death is just great to watch.
I've never been aware of Sandman, other than the basics, but this series has been a wonderful trip into a new and beautiful world, and this episode goes down as one of the greatest things I've ever seen, More please Netflix
This was my favorite episode as well. There is so much that we take for granted whether it's a another day, like the people who come into contact with Death, or simple the people who are in our lives and expect that to never change, Dream and the Immortal. We all need to take a moment to take stock of our lives and the people we fill it with because nothing is promised.
I really enjoyed your commentary on the SANDMAN series. I was enthralled by the comic in my youth, it was so different and compelling. I was introduced to SANDMAN when I saw an advert in a DC comic for the new series in the late 80's, I completed an order form that was printed directly into another comic, cut the form out and mailed with a check to DC Comics New York, New York. I got the check to pay for the subscription from my mother after I convinced her it was a wise investment because it would help me with my reading. Then in about 3 months, sometime in 1989 I started receiving a monthly comic for SANDMAN in the mail. Considering I grew up in Alaska, the comic was usually rather thrashed upon arrival but I loved the it anyway. This Netflix series is done very well, great casting and it stays true to the comic. Amazing adaptation really.

As someone who never read Sandman or is generally familiar with the universe, I'm loving the show and this episode in particular is honestly just so wonderful.
Great video man, yeah the baby scene freaked me out bad, when I was younger it wouldn’t have but now as a father it bothered me but I understand the need for it, this is Ana amazing show of you haven’t seen it people it’s probably the best thing on tv in a very long time.
Kirby Howell-Baptiste was perfect as Death!
Dude, great video... But how your voice goes up and down through out is something else... 😆
Really great video and dive about this episode. Really liked this episode and was one if not the best of the season
One of my favorite episodes of television ever.
Great break down
This is actually my favorite episode! I just wanted to say to whoever is out there and sees this, doesn't it remind you all of a 90's tv show? from the way its filmed to the credits at the beginning it makes me feel like I'm in a time machine like remember how the shows that were shown on Scifi or USA in the afternoon use to look years ago? I think of sliders, highlander, the crow, charmed etc Sandman looks like it would fit right in. Also Tom Sturridge resembles Stuart Townsend as Lestat
This whole season is perfect There better be a season 2, I can *dream* and my dreams are more powerful than a burning star
I lost my brother a couple months ago, and when I watched this episode it directly reminds me of him, he was a sweet, caring and loving brother. This episode is really heart touching.
Perfect analysis on this scene.
Dream's face when that kid ran through the pigeons he was feeding! 🤣
I love this series you're doing and the reasons you give are well written
Hob is my favorite character throughout the comics. I love how, even at his lowest points, he never gives up on life. Yes, things may be bad at any given moment, but at the same time... he never loses sight of how good life _can_ be if you just see it through. I certainly wouldn't say no to a deal like his. I was beyond thrilled that they incorporated his story into episode 6 (issue 6 being one of my other favorite stories)... it's just a thing of beauty.
The episode was outstanding. Felt like two one-act plays following Dream. Would love to adapt this episode into a stageplay
I never read the Sandman, but E6 was my favorite episode. I like getting the background and seeing development of the character sequences, especially this one.
I relate deeply on this episode. 🥺😭
I love collecting 1st appearances in comics. When I got Death’s first appearance and read it. I got more that I expected and thought it was brilliant.
As a history and mythology lover, I loved every second of this episode
This ep was so deep watching how death just collecting her victims was touching
I like how dream looks like the grim reaper but he shapes the living world, and Death looks like an angel of dreams but takes people to the afterlife, a perfect re imagining , also I think Carl Jung would of loved this show.
This was my favorite episode of the series. Totally nailed it. I loved how death was a cheerful lady that provided relief to people that died. I also loved Hob Gadlin's positivity and thirst for life.
I looooved this episode. Totally wasn't crying either lol. I remember going to this one big bookstore to look for I think(is) is The Sandman Library editions. I would get one and sit on the floor and read until mom would come in the store slightly annoyed lol. I could only buy one of the books.. which I still have. The Wake. Then later on I saved some more to buy Dream Hunters illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. If they are able to make that.. and make it in the style of Amano..... *deep breaths*
I would legit watch a spin off of just dream and hob hanging out and bar hopping.
Unfortunately Cinamon Hadley, the inspiration for the character design of Death, passed away January 2018 after a long battle with cancer.
