Why THIS Cheap Chinese Amazon Reel Failed | Sougayilang WQ Spinning Reel Long Term Review

Ойын-сауық

Looked for a fishing reel I could afford to lose, but still hold up to light surf fishing. I purchased the Sougayilang WQ3000 spinning reel based on it's Amazon review rating, saltwater promises, size, looks, and price. Unfortunately after 10-15 hours in the salt, it failed. This vid explains how and maybe why, and hopefully informs your purchase decision. Verdict: skip it.

    I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzread.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

    Great teardown of that reel, Ish. Reminds me that even though I wash down my reels after each outing, I probably need to do some deep-cleaning maintenance here fairly soon, or find some place to do it at a decent price. Want to keep my reels as long as possible.

    I definitely want to do that to my default crabbing reel (penn battle 2 8k), but it's also my bait-soaking 'set it and forget it' while I'm burning lures with my lighter setup, so it's never really going to get a rest unless I redshirt it for a week or two while I do maintenance on it. Maybe doing that will give me an excuse to do some rockfishing angling with my other setups... there always seems to ways I convince myself to do more fishing. Funny how that works.

    Although a cheap reel, this mainly comes down to user negligence or improper use of what the reel is limited to. How did this guy get so much water in the reel with light surf fishing? Even expensive reels can get like this if mistreated.

    Thanks for showing this video and your input of what can go wrong with saltwater use. I just bought a comparable Chinese reel. Th build quality is very good. Because the bulk of my fishing is in freshwater I don't concern myself with corrosion, but I think I will take my new reel apart to make sure that the bearings are well greased. Thanks for the tips.

  • @SuspendaS
    @SuspendaS4 жыл бұрын

    I honestly think you could spend like 10$ on AliExpress and have that reel going stronger than ever. 1. Get some shielded bearings 2. Get yourself a new handle 3. Grease it before you use it. Should be okay to go. It's a cheap reel, what do you expect. As for performance, if your coast fishing you shouldn't use anything that isn't name brand. If you are in the market, get yourself a Shimano Twin Power 4000 and you'll be good for years and years.

    Thx, for the follow up video. I was about to get this with the kastking blackhawk I just ordered, as I too am looking for an inexpensive travel rod + reel combo. I just ordered the 6.86' blackhawk and pairing it w/ the Kastking Mela 2000. After doing some research on a comparable AND reliable cheaper reel, the Mela seems to come up a lot. Hopefully that will work for light surf fishing I plan to do in SoCal. I'll report back on how it performs!

    Ish, thanks for the review. This reel came with the Blackhawk telescopic kit. I'll use the Blackhawk for surf (based on your review) and keep the Sougayilang for the freshwater trout streams. Would repacking the parts with heavier grease help the longevity?

    np! if you keep it to freshwater only, you'll be good. but this reel is definitely not meant for salt or heavy current/weights. repacking would def help, but over time high stress and weaken the gearing in my experience.

    So parts are actually intact and it just needs maintenance after exposed to salt water. Needs oiling of the iron screws as well. Great. Metal main gear is a good news. So i guess 27 is really good. I don't see part breakage with some tinkering, this is good for 27 bucks.

    Nothing wrong with this Chinese reel, just lack of care or lubrication. I'm actually going to buy one, they cost 20 dollars in aliexpress. I know it's no shimano or penn, but if you oil and grease the parts it should last a long time, not mas much as a penn or shimano but enough to justify the 20 dollar investment in a backup reel. I plan to use it for kayak fishing, I don't want to flip and loose or soak in salt water any of my Penns or daiwa regal. Any reel that gets soaked in salt water should be disassembled cleaned and lubricaret, even if it's a 100+ brand name reel, so there is not much difference, take care of it and it would last.

    Thx for the feedback. I've heard other subs say they pre pack these cheaper reels with marine grease to prolong their lives. I suggest a supplemental bushing for the handle screw too. The vid covers usage in the surf in stock form with the usual rinsing, and my experience thereafter. My opinion is that, if advertised as a saltwater rated reel, in oem form it shouldn't have gone sloppy/seized this soon.

    Thanks a lot... Maybe, I saw not to well, but my opinion is: there are no 13+1 BB in the reel, and it has no worm-shaft. The picture, shows the reel inside, including a worm-shaft geer for the drum movement...

  • @VB-bk1lh

    @VB-bk1lh

    2 жыл бұрын

    That seems to be the norm for Chinese reels, if they say 13+1 BB, they really mean 7+1. I tore a few of the more recent China reels down lately, they're getting better but they can't seem to count, and they can't seem to be able to tell carbon fiber from felt washers and they can't tell plastic from graphite. The low quality bearings in that sort of reel is the norm, the gears aren't likely machined well enough for better bearings. You will likely find that if you swap them out for something with tighter tolerances the reel will bind. With all that in mind, they do sell those at the local flea market here for $10 to $15 depending on size, for that amount, with some decent care, they're not bad. Some good grease and a dab of paint on the non stainless hardware will do wonders. Most have pretty decent drag washers size wise, and felt does just fine, but the area where the drag suffers is where the rear of the spool meets the shaft. There's just not enough area there for the spool to lock down against to get the drag numbers they advertise. Even so, they do well enough for the type of fishing they're built for.

    One thing you can do to make these reels last a lot longer is to open them up right out of the box and smother the insides and ball bearings with gear grease. Use water resistant silicone lubricant to clean out all the cheap oil it comes with. Then apply as much gear grease as you can. Spining the gears to get as much coverage as possible.

Mine hasn't rusted at all and I use it only in the salt for the past two years. For that specific reel, some sand did get inside when I dropped it in the fine sand but opening it up, cleaning it and apply more grease had it working fine.

    I own three of these Chinese 12 + 1 bearing reels. The first thing I do is take apart the reel and remove any old lubricant ( if there is any) and use a good reel lubricant and crank the handle until the reel feels nice and smooth. I have not had any problems with these reels. I only use them for freshwater fishing and they have many many hours on them.

    thx for the insight. i've seen multiple comments suggesting that i degrease and repack these cheap reels before i use them. since this reel had 'saltwater' in the description, i wanted to see how long it'd last out of the box in the salt. hopefully i help give insight on what happens without the prep work. still though, the main handle shaft shouldn't have worn so fast.

    Reply to myself, seems my DMK didn't fail from corrosion or any obvious water damage. A small spring appears to be the problem. It may have come out of position as it fell out when i dismantled the reel and i am not of knowing how it goes back and alsi there is a little metal flexible plate thing that has something to do with it. Basically this mechanism just fell apart or something and no corrosion was present . My taking it apart may have caused the spring to fall out but if the reel hadn't stuffed up in the first place I wouldn't have been inclined to take it to bits. Dumb ass mechanism i say

    Dont think any manufacturer is going to step up their game on a 20-30 dollar reel that fails due to saltwater use since the seals themselves are more than the cost of any cheap reel,,however anyone can step up their game,,lol and do a better job of cleaning and servicing any reel regardless of price point and probably get plenty of use out of even the most budget models,, in the end its a combination of quality and care and type of fishing that have the biggest effect on how much service any reel gives us.

    I have a reel repair shop and ALWAYS recommend to checking a new reel; especially if it is to be in saltwater. I'll open it and lube it with a light grease with corrosion inhibitors. Most new reels will come with light oil so they feel smoother. Also noticed the referral to the rotor nut as a screw and it being brass. But brass won't rust. Most reel are brass. Otherwise - GOOD review. And like mot other reviewers WHAT'S WITH THE NEED FOR MUSIC?

    Maybe just the edit,but you seem to crank on the reel too much rather than pulling with the rod and winding down the rod tip, then pulling with the rod, then winding down.. you aren't supposed to use the reel like a winch to haul the entire weight of the fish, that abuse will eventually cause even top tier reels to fail. Just ordered some gear off Aliexpress to see how it plays out, there is an interesting looking long cast spool design . Thanks for the review and teardown, I like others would open the reel new out of the box and tighten and lube and inspect parts, that goes for every reel however and also anytime the reel is dragged in sand or otherwise experiences something which might cause rhe internals to get fouled up, it goes with the territory though, woth beaches here that have coarse grainy granite rock/sand with 2mm or so grain size its brutal on reels if it gets where it shouldn't, but I still figure the Chinese ability to mass produce products has reached a level where they are at least decent quality *if* looked after and not abused and they have been innovating on products for several years now so some of their stuff is actually better than "western" or "japanese" brands, and a lot is price performance competitive. Im actually curious to try some of the ultra cheap fly rods too to see how they compare to $1000 rods :) Anyways thanks for the review, I think anyone seeing this would be wise to tear down and grease *before* use... and maybe make sure the handle isn't missing washers too... I suspect the screw was missing a washer causing friction on plastic that isnt supposed to have friction. but just a guess

    Who added the elevator music? Super annoying. The reel itself is fine, the lube needs attention. The very first thing that a lot of us do when we get a reel is to replace the oil with a good grease and clean up any manufacturing residue that may be left behind. I do this whether the reel cost me $50 or $500. Looking at this video, it makes me think that these things are better built than some cheap name brand reels. All metal gears is a huge plus when many companies these days are using plastic. I may have to order one now.

    A reel that I use to this day(I am going this evening for gar) is a 60 year old French Michell 300. It is a single bearing, unshielded, and brass bushings. I tear it down once a year, replace the grease and occasional bail spring, and use it for salt water consistently. The bearings, bushings and screws in any reel can be good for salt water as long as they are properly greased. Oil will not work. The grease provides the barrier to keep the salt off of the metal at all times and will prevent rusting and corrosion. I also have a few light Pflueger President reels that I use in salt water every year. I use them to catch bait mostly. Again, they are not marketed for salt water but I go through them once a year, same as all of my other reels, and they do not fail. Surprising the only failure I have ever had was a Daiwa Black and Gold. They are usually rock reliable but this one had a failed set of anti-reverse needle bearings. The only failure on the 60 year old Mitchell are bail springs. They break once every 4 or 5 years and take about 30 seconds to replace.

    sweet! yeah i have 2 vintage mitchells, one small one for baitfish, and a bigger one marketed as saltwater ready. not sure of the year of manufacture, but i pull it out once in a while for fun. my favorite crab snaring reel is my BG60, bombproof and amazingly smooth, powerful crank too. what's your favorite grease to use when you repack your reels?

  • @wvXvxvXvw

    @wvXvxvXvw

    I use synthetic automotive bearing grease. Right now its a tube of Royal Purple that I also use for the head bearings on my motorcycles but any good quality synthetic will work. I have a BG13, BG15 and BG20 sitting in front of me now. I need to go through them, I am taking them down to Pensacola in a month. These are the older bulletproof models. They don't have instant anti-reverse but they are more reliable. The newer one I have with anti-reverse is the one that failed. You can still buy the old models on Amazon but they are $100 each, and in my opinion they are not worth that much anymore. They are probably more reliable than anything else you can buy for that money but they are not well balanced and the lack of anti-reverse is a turnoff. I will probably sell them in the next year or so, and I doubt that I will get $100 for all three.

    A trick that works with open (all) ball bearings, away with all old lubricants. pack everything, including drag washers with type, MOLYKOTE 44, pure silicon lubricant contained in high purity lithium soap. This grease is highly resistant to saltwater and have turned my casting/spinning/fly reels into low maintenance, close to eternity machines. Almost all lubricants containing mineral oils can disintegrate/induce cracks in thermo plastic components. O.K. the 44 is quite expensive, but worth every buck.

    Team EVO Surf Casters so this chinese reel bargain hunt is a side project/travel only deal. my main plugging reel is a clash, this wq was replaced by a conflict, ie "real" reels.

    I use 5000 size, if you use 3000 series here, you need order 2 size larger, that's 5000,

    Just had a new daiwa BG4000 fail. It turned out the shaft somehow had gotten bent. What a nightmare taking that reel apart. Very disappointing. The bearings even though they are sealed are getting noisy. That is a 99.00 reel. There are tons of the original diawa ss and bg's that are still chugging along. They were very simple reels with just the one pinion ball bearing. And they all had that handle design that goes thru the main gear. That was a feature that enabled Daiwa to be the only reel company that you could switch from left to right hand.Only very recently has daiwa abandoned that. I am trying the Kodiak 3000 right now. So far so good. Time will tell though. You have to take all the glowing reviews on Amazon with a grain of salt. It is more informative to click on the one star reviews.

    pat thx for the feedback. coincidentally, I'm borrowing a new bg3000 to review, looking forward to it, even though a youtuber I follow "WWJ" has killed his a few times in hawaii. agreed, some bombproof pass throughs exist, if the alloy used is quality you won't get slop, but i prefer the newer screw in. funny, so i also have a Kodiak 5000, 6 months into it, it'll be my next long term review vid👌

    I have the 5000 also. I guess I said 3000 because the 5000 Kodiak is the size of a 3000 daiwa. I was stunned at how small the 5000 was when I got it. Its a cool little reel so far though. The handle knob cap screw fell out and somehow made it out of the boat but Kodiak sent a new handle within a few days. With a few tweaks you could easily keep that 27.00 reel going. A few washers on the handle screw, little oil on the felt washers, and a drop of oil on the one way clutch and you're good to go. I actually kind of like those unsealed bearings. You could pack them with some heavy grease and they would be fine. Most of the sealed bearings are not lubed. You have to go to the trouble to take the seals off, pack them, and then reinstall the covers.

    I must be old school because I have always prepped a reel for first use. Even a sub 25 dollar reel. Also comparing those Shimanos (IX,FX,AX series) is an unfair comparison because you CANT kill them unless you abuse them lol. We used those for back bay fishing for Spotted Bay Bass in So Cal. And they have no ball bearings just bushings. Hell I have one now sitting here I use. Good video as usual. I would love to see you clean up that reel and see if you could revive it. Looking forward to your next vid!

    Bill Miller thx for the great feedback. i wanted to use this stock and see of it lived up to the Amazon claims. yeah, i guess the closest shimano is the ax since its infinite anti reverse. good idea, i wonder if i can resuscitate this wq, not sure how to resolve the handle retention cap/friction issue.

    Reguardless of cleaning it up the slide thru handle design is garbage. You probably can't even get parts for that reel in the Vid.

    yeah. had some from the 60's and 70's that screwed in. The problem is they often stripped out or siezed on the thread so they all went to a pass through shaft. And now better alloys or design that allowed them to go back.

    The pass thru design is crap reguardless when it came out.all brands should be using the screw in style it's just better. He showed you here why it is.
