Why this boat class is an offshore icon

Спорт

✔️ Soon to be three laps around the world
✔️ 24-hour distance record
✔️ Closest finish in the Race's history
Niall makes a case that this offshore beast is perhaps the most iconic racing class in our history - in a deep dive into the VO65.
We examine why the one-design class is making a third lap around the world, compare the VO65 and IMOCA and get first hand perspectives from the sailors onboard.

I watched every episode from the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race and seeing Nialls here is like running into an old friend. Can't wait for the next edition.

You just made me believe it's right. Because for all the time I thought the VO70 (second generation) would be the most iconic one. Great video!

In some ways this was a better walkthrough of the VO65 than the one you did before the last race. Would love to see more of the sail handling and trim features, including the non-friction rings for adjusting the sheeting angles, the traveler (I thought I saw boats without the traveler track?), preventers and brakes. Thanks again for keeping this series alive and so interesting!

Agreed. And the vo65 is special for me too. Not least for keeping the racing so tight in the last edition, while also breaking distance records and keeping teams racing through some heavy weather. Everyone has their favourite race moments I guess.

Pretty good content!! If i may suggest improvements to make it even better it would be to ad b-roll about the structures and fittings that each explanation is going about. Cheers!! Keep up the good work mates!

@@xalibasNo worries, It is a hang over from the twentieth century and film cameras. I have worked in film and commercials for 20 years and we always call them inserts and establishing shots if it is a wide shot of the world. Often a second unit or splinter unit gets these shots and main unit concentrates on the shots with the hero actors. Often we get the inserts and establishers with body doubles so the main unit can move forward through the daily call sheet with the hero actor. And often we go and recreate the inserts weeks later when the editor needs more detail in a scene and the hero actors have been wrapped.

Speaking from experience: they are when the breeze is up in the 20+ kn, when the boat speed's getting high and the waves start going over the bow. On a calm day like in the video, it's actually cuite comfortable.

Since it's such a pure boat, why don't they sail the 65's in the next America's Cup? How about that...? Has the winner of the America's Cup ever went on to win the Ocean Race in the same year?

  • @zoepaulastrassfield2664

They typically *aren’t* held in the same year because so many sailors do both. Peter Blake and Grant Dalton are the first Ocean Race winners that come to mind who later also won the AC, there may be others, though.

An "iconic" tractor and the beginning of the end of the VOR. The VO70s were the peak and it's been nothing but downhill since then. Most likely cooked up in a backroom deal to keep Farr design relevant in the world of ocean racing after getting repeatedly shown up by Juan K.

@@rt-uh6mt , yep. Compare Macif trimaran and Macif ballast monohull driven by the same skipper Francois Gabart. Trimaran circumnavigated the globe in 42 days, while ballast monohull took 78 days.
