if igor is an alter ego earl sweatshirt is the biggest one now that he raps under his real name Thebe Kgositsile.

Idk if you knew this about Earl , but he also had an alias named Sly Tendencies. I think there was an album or EP he released under that named called Kitchen Cutlery. I just remember running across it in like 2010.

Whether someone is a rapper or any other type of artist in the music industry, most of the time it just makes sense business wise to have an alter ego. Either an alter ego, or a slight name change (Ex. Kendrick Lamar vs Kendrick Lamar Duckworth ; Billie Eilish vs Billie Eilish O’Connel) Here’s why: Intellectual property. When an artist signs a deal, they’re signing away their masters, publishing, and intellectual property. In other words, the record label literally owns them. And that’s how 99% of artists operate today. But if you have an alter ego, you can keep your real name. Or if you wanna get close to it, you use a partial of your name, usually your first and middle name. But I also have a lot of respect for people who use their real names as their artist name. People like Kanye West, Taylor Swift, etc. Of course as said previously, if you sell yourself away, other people own your name and your intellectual property. And this idea can stretch outside the realm of the music industry/business. Great example: John Cena. That’s his real name, but it’s also his ring name. But every he goes out and does a movie or project outside the ring, because WWE owns his name, they get a cut from it.

Most modern deals have a clause that will specify "you, any extension of you including aliases" - people caught onto this back in the day with Prince. Record labels now protect themself from you rebranding or doing a name change to nullify contracts. It's unfortunately not as just changing your name anymore.

Kool Keith was the originator of the alter egos in my book (at least for hip hop). I took inspiration from that despite not being the biggest fan of some of his music.

I'm aware almost nobody knows him but the late Hardy Fox, who co-founded the experimental band The Residents, worked under loads of alter egos in addition to his real name. His website lists 18 different pseudonyms! However, not all these names were for music. Some were for other tasks he did like writing and graphic design.

Nah the name was supposed to be ‘makaveli the don’ but the people who did the album art had a misunderstanding; the name of the album was supposed to be ‘killiminati: the 7 day theory’, but since there was this misunderstanding the album name changed to ‘the don killumimati: the 7 day theory’ and the name got shortened to just ‘makaveli’

Kool Keith is a good one he’s got a bunch too… Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon, Black Elvis, Tashan Dorsett…he even has some inside of projects like Mr. Gerbik 😂 it’s a lot of fun Kool Keith is severely underrated in my opinion

Surprised you didn’t mention Nicki Minaj who has some of the most culturally iconic alter egos. She has a LOT but most notably Roman (aggressive) and Barbie (bubble pop higher pitch voice). She’s definitely first to come to mind when someone mentions rap alter egos. Both Roman and Barbie are in her famous verse on Monster and she has songs and albums named after them

Yesterday's new quintet is a more interesting concept then quasimoto. Its a band with seperate members but all one guy working as each and just a guy with a pitched up voice. But both these aliases are different in what makes them " interesting" so its not really somethimg to compare. Yes its amazing that madlib is each member of this band, but (and i think its just bias) quasimoto is a like a character from an adult swim pilot.

You left out the fact that Budd dwyers suicide was broadcast live. Vaguely alluded to at best. Most cats outside of PA aren't as familiar.
