Well, recklessness to self wouldn't be in line with scripture. Wheelies can be needlessly dangerous. If you're really good at it then probably not, especially on a bike you're very familiar with. Basically, I'm saying practicing is where the danger is. I'm not a rider and I don't know if this is the case for him. Just putting a possible reason as to why he lacks that skill. I'm an older guy that grew up around bikes. My dad was an avid rider but my uncle almost lost his life having to lay down his bike after a truck pulled out in front of him. In my family that made some of us weary. Including my uncle (a life long mechanic) who basically gave it up and put his attention into muscle cars. I'm interested in starting at the "old" age of 44 and if I do I can say with certainty I will learn very slowly and probably never intentionally wheelie. However, the thought of unintentionally coming up off the pavement scares me and makes me think I'll have to practice just enough to keep me safe.

This is an awesome bike. I have one and it fantastic. It is nimble and has power on tap in any gear at any rpm due to the linear torque curve. You can ride it easy in town but also insane on quiet stretches of highway. This is a keeper for me 100% !

Had an FZ09 (same engine) and it was hard NOT to wheelie in the first 2 gears, and in full acceleration in 4th gear just a little bump in the road was enough to lift the front a bit. Super agile. The only downside was that it constantly begs you to do stuff you shoudln't be doing if your license has any value to you.

Yep that's how my xsr 900 was. It begged to go faster. Got the death wobble once in a corner at around 130. I ended up selling it because I have a son and he wants me to stick around. The xsr won't let you wheelie unless you turn off the traction control. You do that and it's coming up with too much throttle.

Bikes like this are the most fun to ride. I've owned over 20 bikes from 125 up to a busa. One thing that is a fact for me was the sv 650 pointy I rode into old age and eventual death was the most fun I've ever had on any bike ever. The sv is so forgiving it convinces you your Valentino Rossi. I've drifted the sv into turns had it sideways on purpose and by accident but it always helped me get back control without a catastrophe. They weren't joking when they said it's a perfect beginner into a bigger bike. I ride in London uk so streets are small and full of obsticles so that low down power and flickable handling are perfect. Aside from that naked bikes are no1. You feel the speed better and are more aware of what your doing because as the speed goes up you have to hang on harder. My last bit is start on a dirt bike as it will teach you lessons that you will come through to tell the tale. If I got straight on a busa I would prob be dead now. Respect the road and only open her up when the roads clear and there's no side roads!!! That rule has kept me safe. X

I sold it a few years ago because I thought I was too old, but it's hard to ride for 40 years and just give it up. These three bangers seem to be everywhere now a days and I really love mine naked. Brings back memories of my '02 Street Triple... which I sold after 2 years because I was just getting too crazy on it without even thinking about it. I love the triple engine but I'll probably get the MT-07 just so I don't start doing 90mph in a 35mph zone.

@@Scowguy Different models. First gen bike had detuned original R1 engine with carbs and later model used 2004 R1 motor in a detuned state, which did not work out well. It used FI too and in its early days had very snatchy on or of off throttle response. Horrible. I owned three first Gens and they have a much nicer motor with far better torque in the lower ranges. They respond extremely well to a good quality after exhaust combined with a good jet kit like Ivans or Performance pro. I still have a last edition 2005 in gorgeous dark red and black combo ( Not sold in the US ), and properly tricked up.

Like the XSR900 I had for a short time they are a wonderfull bike yamaha really nailed the 3 cylinder engine for the street. Few bikes put that kind of stupid grin on my face at my age. Last Sept ran across a good deal on blue 2018 MT-10 that just felt so right so had to let the XSR900 go. I now have no regrets the MT-10 suspension and stability alone make it worth it. The engine and transmission are a jewel. Got to give Yamaha a big thumbs up for all the FZ/MT/XSR series of motorcycles.

@fosterpainter The MT10 is the only bike I've ridden (and I've ridden a lot of the competitors ) which I would consider swapping my XSR for...But that being said, I still think that the XSR - for me - is a better road bike when I take everything into consideration. Depends totally on what riding you intend to do.

Somehow this bike was off of my radar until this afternoon when I saw a used one at a local dealership. Never was a huge fan of my he FZ/MT 09 aesthetic and heard it’s front suspension was pretty bad, and apparently Yamaha changed the suspension on these bikes. Plus they look better aesthetically to me anyway. I really think this will be my next bike and the bike that gets me bike into riding after a 2 year hiatus

+1. 14k miles on my '13 Speed3R. Talking to my bike dealer today. told him I want a new bike, kinda feel the urge, but There Is No Better Bike that has ever been made. '16+ has ride by wire and electronic nannies i prefer to avoid. I came to it from a $23k Multistrada. Thought I couldn't tour on a naked. Wrong. It's been all over. tolerable to ride to the mountains and better than the ducati once it gets there. Commutes fine. Looks awesome. Arrows sound incredible. never overheats in Texas summer. Romps at track days. Never once has failed me. Aside from maintenance I've replaced one relay in 14k miles. 4 bikes in my garage but the Triumph is parked by the door. I do admire the Yamaha now that they seem to have kinda fixed the suspension, but this guy is (how to say politely?) a bit inexperienced. He's a Harley guy, can barely ride, just trying to build his subscriber base.

I had a 2018 MT-09, flashed, and the best way I can describe is that all of its power is found within "zero-to-just-above-highway-speed-limit" range. In other words, they're super quick from 0 to about 90-ish, but then it abruptly flattens out. So you feel like king of the road in 90% of commuter situations. And on a track with lots of twists, still fast and fun. But once you hit a straightaway and you approach 80 or so mph, you can feel it starting to flatten, and 90+ is where all the real sportbikes fly past you.

Great video, but I gotta comment on some things. The tank covers are aluminum, not plastic. Traction control won't impact wheelies, riding mode will. If your arms feel like they're being "pulled from their sockets" then you're riding wrong (hold on the bike using legs and core, keep arms loose). My opinion: love my XSR900 but too much power for a naked.

@@thomaspfaff8723 The XSR900 puts over 100hp to the ground around mid-9k rpm, with peak torque around 8.5k. I never timed how long it took me to accelerate to over 100mph but its quick. Without the fairing providing some aerodynamic benefit, a rider will literally blow off the bike unless they're glued flat to the tank. It's certainly ridable but most naked sport bikes or standards are powered for a more casual and manageable ride. The same bike with 70-80hp is just as fun. Having said all that, I bought mine BECAUSE it has over 100hp at the rear wheel (along with great electronics and brakes), though I rarely ride in A-mode and it's still a fun bike.

I would have a hard time deciding. Imagine if you had to pick between a camaro with a ton of power, or an s2000/miata that you could treat like a go kart.
