Hmm. A fictional gaslighter interested only in maintaining his power, money, and glory on a bed of lies versus a real life gaslighter only interested in maintaining his power, money, and glory on a bed of lies. You're right. The author could make Baelish tell the truth. No force on Earth can compel Martin to stop lying about a book he is clearly not writing.

I think The Winds of Winter has probably been the ultimate mereneese knot for GRRM where, tasked with building towards the story points that are “set in stone” he has gardened so much there are literally so many balls in the air and characters to manage I don’t doubt he wrote some during those inactive periods but I bet you money he spent a lot of time writing every chapter 20 times

Yeah, I have always thought that was the case which is why I’ve always had the tiniest, probably naïve hope he finishes A Dream of Spring. He’s gardened so many branching plot lines and character arcs that I can imagine it’s really hard to rein them in to where he wants them to be for the ending he has planned. It’s why I hope that maybe, just maybe if Winds of Winter is finished he’ll have an easier time writing the final book since the characters will likely be more closely aligned to where he envisions them.

I'm optimistic we will get something in the main story by the end of 2024. My biggest worry is that George is underestimating how much of the story he has left to tell, and that he is clinging to the idea that he has to cram it into 7 books to the point it's impacting what he writes. If that's the case, I wish he would just get back to just writing the story, and it will take however many books it takes. Also, as fans, I think we would prefer to have more frequent, smaller books than waiting 12+ years for a monster book

  • @Bane_questionmark

    @Bane_questionmark

I would rather keep the length as it has been. Yeah it sucks waiting so long, but remember these books aren't only being written for people right now but will possibly be read for many years to come by people for whom the 10+ year gap will be an obscure piece of trivia. I guess they could release it piecemeal like old serial novels, but personally the waiting is worse when you get a little bit at a time because your interest and suspense is continually raised.

I'm halfway through ADWD and I agree, in a way it almost feels like the story is only getting started (especially with the introduction of Young Griff/Aegon). I've heard some people say that TWOW might end up being split into 2 books (like a volume 1 and a volume 2) which would be pretty hype of that happens because that means there is still a lot of this incredible story to be told yet.

A lot of people are saying they are concerned that we may not see ADOS, but I'm actually encouraged by how close we are to seeing TWOW. Given the number of chapters that were pushed from ADWD, I can see the same thing happening, perhaps even on a larger scale, with TWOW. After it's publishing, we could very well see a book that has numerous chapters cut and given over to ADOS where it could provide a head start. Although this same thing happened between AFFC and ADWD, so perhaps I'm just being too optimistic. Either way, I'm very excited.

Think about it the average lifespan of americans is 77, George is 74, next year he'll be 75, then it will take at least 5 years to finish ADOS, by which point he'll be 80 and that's assuming he doesn't decide to throw in another part. I'm one of those people concerned with not getting ADOS, *but*it's worth pointing out that the closer we get to the end the closer characters will be where they're supposed to be and the easier things will be to write because he probably already has a vision of the ending just how to get there is the part constantly changing. It's like that with Oda and One Piece, the series was supposed to be 5 years long, but now it's been almost 3 decades, but that entire time he's had the ending in mind and a lot of what was planned is finally coming to light it's just the filling in the middle gets bloated with authors like them constantly getting new ideas.

Now I legitimately don't care, the last season was a flop and it's been too long so the interest has gone. I came here just now for the laughs. The books will likely be finished one day even if someone else does it using his material. The readers of the future will have something great to read with a conclusion. But a release date of 2024? lmfao. I remember when it was going to be released in 2014 and thinking what a long time to wait.🤣

People forget that George writes a lot. He had 200 pages of prolog for Feast and 200 pages of excess for Dance. He wrote 400+ pages of content for book 4 and 5. He wrote so much that he had to split the book into 2 separate books. When George says he's 2/3rds done, it's likely he is done, but writing way more than necessary. In case nobody is aware this is potentially great news. In Spain we just had a couple of years of no official ASOIAF in book stores. The company that had the rights until now didn’t want to buy the rights for F&B because they were too expensive and they dropped production on the books. Just now after 2 years of those being on standby Penguin Random House Spain has announced that they have bought the rights and will be re-publishing the 5 ASOIAF novels AND the next one when it’s ready. This move, being from the company that also has the rights in the US and more countries, clearly indicates that TWOW is coming sooner rather than later since that’s a huge financial move. Gives me hopes.

The prediction video was a really well done back-of-the-envelope calculation, which I say as a physicist (we love our back-of-the-envelope problems). You even characterize the uncertainty, which is itself not a simple estimate to do. It's even more impressive to see it tentatively born out, barring unforseen hiccups (what we might call a systematic error, which is outside of the theoretical errors). They "abandoned the plots of the 4th and 5th novels". Post season 3 was when I got into the books and when I got my dad into the books and the show. Season 4 was... hesitantly okay, but extremely worrisome. My dad and I discussed it in real time (like, multi-hour discussions every week). Season 5 was all we needed to know to confirm our suspicions. He called it quits then, I watched Season 6 just to see if our predictions were correct and report back. I really, really wish we had been wrong. Unfortunately, I know a good number of people that think Season 5-7 were fine on their own -- why would you think it's bad, let alone not the actual plot. Gonna be a bit difficult not gloating over being right when WoW comes out...

I'll believe it when I see it. I've seen that GRRM also doesn't think he'll ever finish ASOIAF because of all the other projects he's got on the burners for HBO. Fans of the books will be lucky if we get TWOW before Hell literally freezes over. He's got multiple series that he's trying to work on in addition to more Fire & Blood. It seems like he's spreading himself way too thin to be able to maintain a fresh interest in keeping up the writing. Besides, he doesn't seem to think he'll be around too much longer. He needs to take care of his health and dedicate the bulk of his spare creative energy on a few solid projects rather than trying to maximize what he takes on.

This doesn't affect the timeline - but it might give it more clarity. From what I know of TV production, a TV script per year wouldn't be too much of a distraction. Given that George RR Martin is an experienced TV writer and already knew what he'd be writing - it wouldn't take him that long to complete scripts. A TV script for game of thrones would be around 60 pages (maybe more, maybe less depending on the episode). It could take him as little as a month to get it done (rewrites and all), though that's probably unlikely.

There are a lot of people who loves the show and don't have a clue of how rich and deep the story is in the books. They maybe read some Wiki on a few characters and found out about somethings in the books and try to justify how bad the show got by the most obvious (season seven and eight). Only a handful of book readers will have the nerve to say "well, things got bad after season six" with a straight face.

Personally I'm glad that GRRM was sidetracked into writing the three prequel DUNK & EGG novellas, I've enjoyed them far more than his ASOIAF magnum opus. You don't need a Ph.D in Westerosi history, focusing on the many waves of migration that populated Westeros and resulted in which dynastic noble houses dominated the land. Also useful is an understanding of the many skills lost with the Doom (fall) of the far more advanced civilisation of Ancient Valyria, and the Essos migration period of the barbarian Dothraki horse nomads. I find it useful because I've studied enough actual history to recognise where GRRM found his inspiration but I wouldn't devote myself to the necessary study to learn purely fictional pseudohistory. DUNK & EGG offers just as much entertainment and excitement, without the need to know a millennium of complex internecine struggle as a prerequisite for understanding the plots.

I don't think that forum screencap is as clear cut as you're presenting it, it says they're making plans based on him finishing TWoW *and/or* F&B2 within the next year. That is still good news, in that they're basing relatively short term plans on him finishing at least one of those two big projects (and it's even a possibility that he finishes both). But even in this statement, it's possible he finishes F&B but not TWoW. Also George is famously bad with deadlines, maybe the publishers believe this timeline is likely but it may not be so in reality. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, I'm not pessimistic about the book in general and I even think it's reasonable he'll finish book 7 if he doesn't take too much longer with this one (I think the reason it's taken so long has been in regards to specific circumstances at the end of 4/5 being difficult for him to work through). But throughout all this, what's contributed most to people's disappointment is reading too much into progress reports and then interpreting that too generously.

I loved the show. I still can pick out great things in seasons that were not good. The way they did the Jon reveal flowing into crowning him King in the North, holding of the door, blowing up the sept and knighting Brienne. However, it was obvious things were going to become drastically different when omitting characters, such as Jeyne which caused the Sansa story to change. Or changing characterizations/ making up new characters for some reason or another such as Shea and Jeyne to Talisa. That's greatly changes how the story flows. I think ignoring Tysha did a great disservice to Tyrion's story. I believe that was the moment I seriously noticed the show was going to get worse. Calling Tysha a whore was big deal to Tyrion because she wasn't but was convinced she had to be to "love" him and what Tywin made her do. Calling Shea a whore was just a fact haha. This doesn't even hit on Stone Heart, Connington and Aegon. Let alone the DRASTICALLY different Euron. In the books that man is terrifying. It's clear the books will be drastically different. I can't wait to read WoW! I want the proper storyline.

I have read the books, 1-5, three times. I've listened to the Audiobooks twice. Read the trheee Novellas 2 times. I've been so frustrated at times over TWoW and so angry at George at different times because of how invested I was emotionally at this story and not having any payoff and questions that only keep building. That being said, something intuitive within me told me to start the books again. Refresh myself with the details. Obviously I've felt that before or I wouldn't have been through them 5 times but this time feels different. I really think we're getting the book in the next year. Maybe Christmas. At least an announcement. I used to hold out hope that he decided to hold Winds back so he could do a staggered double release. I don't believe that anymore but I have to think the finishing the story, Dream, is going to be infinitely easier than tying all those paths, worlds apart. together in Winds. By the end of Winds all of the characters should be close to converged. They will all be near each other. And that's hard to do given he was still building tension at end of Dance.

I think he held it back because he totally lost motivation from what happened in the TV series. If you look at all the interviews he's given since then, he only talked about ASOIAF when forced to do so by some interviewer (which, of course, was every interview). When not forced to talk about ASOIAF, he talked passionately about his other projects. People talk expansively about what they are passionate about. He was passionate about every other project he did. And that is totally understandable!! And all this public demand and condemnation of him can't have helped - that would have worsened the situation if anything. ASOIAF was a passion project - it had to have been to be written so well. I don't think writing well, or any artistic endeavour, works without that passion. Plus he's obviously a perfectionist, which is why his books are so well written. And the TV disaster had to have had a devastating affect on his motivation for his own story. Add that to the enormous unceasing pressure that has been there for adding to a series that was so globally loved, by an unthinking rather stupid public. This video finally comes close to expressing that. This is what I personally thought had happened all along. It was only common sense. If someone had destroyed my passion project so utterly, I'm not sure that I would ever have motivation towards it again, and any pressure, particularly that kind of global pressure, would only deepen that feeling. If this is true, and he has finally found some motivation again, awesome! But I don't blame him in the least for loosing it for a while. He gave the public some fabulous fiction, and in return that public behaved fairly unthinkingly, childishly and selfishly in their demands. He doesn't owe them or I anything. He's a human being, not an AI robot. I would certainly love to see the next book, but I wish him the best in whatever endeavour he does, whether it's to finish the series, the book or other projects.

I'll believe it when it actually happens. Until then, I have no faith he will finish the next novel, WOW or the ADOS. Basically he's too engrossed in his new gold mine of money, HBO's House of Dragons & 2 more planned seasons; also many possible spin -offs of more tv shows based on his work. This is easier for him and gives him the perfect excuses not to get his novels done. I'm sorry I ever invested my time & money into his unfinished books.

I'm right there with you. I read the first 5 books, then started watching the series. I was uneasy that the books weren't finished and the show was going to overtake them. This never leads to anything good, and I was proven right with the crap show the last 3 seasons turned into. I had hope that at least we had the books to tell the complete tale, but we're still waiting and waiting. Meanwhile, he's working on Dunk and Egg? Uh....thanks but no. I want to see what happens in Ice and Fire. Go back to Dunk and Egg when you've finished the tale that started it all.

If I was Martin, I would use the release of TWOW to announce I was breaking up ADOS into two books, that way people will get ADOS quicker and cut in half the wait. I would also clear my schedule completely, only times I appear at panels is via zoom and give all spin off material to trusted people to handle.

You're assuming that GRRM wants to finish it. He doesn't, if he wanted he would've finished. To him to be successful and famous is much more important than his craft.

Publisher’s will probably try to time the release for around HOTD to capitalise on the hype boost sales.

It's called A World of Ice and Fire. It's free but you have to pay to get it ' updated ' to a dance with dragons. It has like 9 sections (i thinck). Oh, it's for smartphones.

Thank you for the wake-up call. I was part of the "they run out of books" team myself and of course as a book fan I knew how much they butchered Dorne, the Sansa story, Young Griff etc but I didn't really thought about it.

I don’t care about what the tv show did….I WANT the books to come out, but I also think they won’t b/c GRRM gave them the gist of how things will go, and he stopped working on it for so long b/c he was deflated thinking that people won’t be thrilled to read the rest. That’s why I have this theory that IF he does put out book 6 like u claim he will, depending on the sales #’s and how it’s received will dictate whether or not he releases the last book prior to his death. His head has over-inflated since the success of the show, so I think his pride ultimately dictates what’s going on with the completion of ASOIAF. I wish he wouldn’t tho b/c there are so many other characters not in the show who I’d like to see have pivotal character arcs-like Victarion Greyjoy-I’d love to see more action from him. He was the reason I bought a House Greyjoy sweatshirt. Also, I think Aryas story could be developed better and have a way better role. Varys too. Tyrion too. I’d love to see Jamie get out from under Circe’s thumb and redeem himself. But depending on how book 6 is received will dictate how quickly book 7 comes out. GRRM might not be able to face the criticism & might take the cowards way out, dictating the last book not be released till after death…I’m actually thinking this will happen regardless b/c that’s just how GRRMs inflated head works now and is befitting your typical narcissist… I’d be willing to bet a serious sum of $ on it. Book 7 will ONLY be released Posthumously.

Ive actually had the same thought. If you look at pacing over the years and how hes been pacing himself the last several years. 2024 makes sense. Especially with the news of other things getting paused. Its a good sign.. Im calling fall 2024
