Why the Twin Princes are a God-Tier Boss: an Analysis
After the (relative) success of my Slave Knight Gael analysis video, I decided to give the Twin Princes a go. I love this fight and could talk about it for ages, so thanks for listening to my rambling!!!

All I know is that this spot marks are grave, but you can rest here too if you'd like
Little funfact: yall remember Gwyndolin's death sentence? "An eternal curse upon thee." and yall remember Lothric's? "You remain amongst the accursed". He essentially completes Gwyndolin's sentence, because he assumes you want to Link the fire and therefore prolong mankind's curse.
it's funny, in my first playthrough I was like "yeah bro I also want the fire to fade into nothing can we please chat about this instead"
"Rise, if you would." Will always give me goosebumps

I don’t have time to watch this at the moment, but I fully agree based off the title alone.
Favorite fight in all the games
I love finding someone take the time to make videos like these because it is a masterpiece and something that deserves that level of appreciation. It's just so good, this boss is so well done. The music as well.
I always cry on this boss 😭 This is the pinnacle of boss design, the music the dialogue the lore behind it, the combat never feels unfair but truly smooth Dark Souls 3 is and will be the best type of art I ever experienced 👏🏻

everytime the 2nd phase starts and lorian attacks and the music kicks in always gives me chills, i had a tough time with this boss but this is by far my favorite one
The music is awesome
i love this fight with everything in it , only shame everyone on the internet seems to call poor Lothric the femboy of the title , like he's just weak why are their minds so twisted they literaly compare him to gwyndolin , also great analysis you earned a sub , can you make a similar one about abyss watchers ?

There is some merit to comparing him to gwyndolin as they are both gods which favor ranged attacks and slim of build. I want to say vaati mentioned something about lothric being inbred so there’s a good chance gwyndolin is his ancestor (in multiple ways following the family tree maybe?)
This was a really great analysis- no beating around the bush. I really love Lorian & Lothric’s fight, and sometimes I wish the boss had more health (tho I can understand why not from a first playthrough I struggled with these boyos) and I can say that with any great Ds3 bossfight. Keep up the great work, and can’t wait to see more analysis on the bosses in the soulsgames!

Great commentary. These guys always give me a hard time. The way you described From's design philosophy of reading and aggression kind of makes it seem a little more manageable! Speaking of paired bosses - hardest one I can remember was Lud and Zallen!
My pfp speaks for myself 😂. This was a great video and I agree with everything you said, except for one thing. I'm weird and this is my favorite fight in the game, with Gael in third place. But I would just like to say that your ideas came out strong and your video was very well structured. It's not much but I subbed! Can't wait to see more of your content.

Really cool video! If anything, I’d love to see a more in-depth analysis of Lorian’s moves. I haven’t done this fight at SL1, so I guess I’ve never truly mastered the idea of reading a move and their different timings pre-teleport. Anyway, you earned a sub.
@jermergerg
Ай бұрын
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it! I did them hitless a few weeks ago, it's definitely not the easiest. I think I got hit once in this fight here, which still takes me a lot of effort. Basically his pre-teleports have a general positioning they start in that can then branch out to any move that starts in that position. So if he raises his hand before teleporting, he can end with any move that starts in the upper-handed position, including the magic attack, the one-handed slam, the two-handed standing slam, and the diagonal downward sword swipe. If he starts parallel to the floor, it will end with one of the lateral swipes. I haven't done a super detailed slo-mo replay to confirm this with 100% accuracy, but I'm pretty sure this is the general gist!

Definitely my favorite Boss in the game. It's just really great in my opinion. I also just really love Lorian he looks cool with his armor and crown.
I strongly agree with this take; I feel like the twin princes are usually rated highly by most people, but they still end up slightly underrated in general. I am pretty average at videogames, not great at fast reaction time, twitch gameplay, I get by in fromsoft games through experience and determination, but this fight in particular makes me feel like fucking superman when I can absolutely dominate it. But at the same time, whenever i come back to it, there's still some challenge there. It's never a cakewalk. Very balanced.
The Twin Princes mark exactly what makes Dark Souls III's combat arguably the best in the extended Soulsborne series. Every move is deliberate, synergetic, and natural. It's tough, but never cheap, and that's what makes it so great. Beat it first try. Yep, I think the reason this boss stays overlooked is because it appears at the point of the game where you've likely mastered III's flow of combat, so things like Champion Gundyr, Nameless King and Soul of Cinder are kind of pushovers, at least in my experience and some of the ones I've seen. A great fight that was overshadowed by the spectacle to come.

For me, I see the whole camera unlocking thing in a different light. He teleports directly behind you in a position that purposefully unlocks your camera and in a position where he is out of frame. But here's why. They want you to rely on anticipating an attack without seeing it. If you really learn him, you'll know that every time he ends up behind you after being far away, he attacks immediately. So I have always learned to just preemptively dodge, because I know exactly what he's going to do. I don't need to spin my camera and turn and see what he's doing. From doing the fight over and over, I already know. So I evade attacks I didn't need to see coming because I knew they already were coming. They want you to anticipate it.
@jermergerg
24 күн бұрын
Yeah I agree, and I've def learned to anticipate attacks from behind and roll away (happens in the video a few times I think). It's more an aesthetic thing for me. I like the rhythm of the fight, but having to manually turn the camera around and re-lock just kinda mess up the flow in my opinion, which is why I'm not a huge fan of it.
Lots of facts here. L&L are definitely one of the best duos they made. Tied with the demon prince duo for #1 in my opinion. The way the fight flows just goes over very well and smooth, nothing feels unfair, and it’s just generally a cool fight. It really is mind boggling how they went from stuff like this, to godskin duo, (which is more than a duo). Cowardly gargoyles, the fell twins, and most of the other ER duos. The music too is just gripping like other ds3 tracks but a tad bit more so. Really there’s just little to nothing that you could complain about with them. Also at 4:09 the meaty clang there is SOO good . Shame they didn’t use the cut lothric castle ost on the section of stairs before the boss room.
@jermergerg
Ай бұрын
Oh man I had a whole part of the script for the music section talking about the way the clang of the sword is actually integrated musically into the score as a pseudo-instrument, but I had to cut it for length reasons. So glad someone else notices/appreciates that though!!!
I find the fight to be narratively amazing, but at the same time its not only directly after Dragonslayer armour, but its also arguably before the Nameless king, which are two very difficult bosses (imo). My problem is that they're just too easy. on my first playthrough, nameless king, dragonslayer armour, and pontiff sulyvahn were all beaten after a dozen to two dozen tries, whereas twin princes was felled in just two. I genuinely loved the teleporting mechanic and the lothric mechanic but it was just too simple and slow of a fight for my taste. I can see why you love it so much though!
@jermergerg
Ай бұрын
I for sure get that. I think it would be cool if they were fractionally more difficult, but, while I like difficult bosses too, one of the virtues for me of this fight is how you don't really have to overthink it, you can kinda just settle into the rhythm, and given the aesthetics and ambience of this fight, I really like that. But DSA and Nameless King also show how difficult fights can be just as great, just in a different way :)
Friede is my favorite boss, I remember watching someone take her on and feeling absolutely hyped. She’s the reason I picked up DS3
@jermergerg
Ай бұрын
top 4 in the game for me for sure
I want to point out ? Linking the fire being a bad idea? It's not that simple. The Fire is literally the fabric of reality trying to keep itself alive by eating itself. Although the quality drops each time? The fabric of reality it be.
Would it be correct to compare Lorian and the Demon in Pain to Radahn and Malenia? I don’t think there’s been any similar boss duel lore but I’d be happy to be surprised
@jermergerg
Ай бұрын
That's actually a really great thought! Per Lorian's sword, he slew the Demon Prince, and I can see there being some parallels to the mutual degradation to that Malenia and Radahn inflicted on each other.

Potentially down the line, but it would be some time. I've played BB and I like it, but I haven't gotten to develop as close a relationship with it. Long story short, I got a bad gym injury in my elbow a few years ago, and something about the PS5 controller reactivates it, and I can really only play PS5 for like 1-2 hours a week lol. I think there are customized controllers, but they cost like 175, and I'm not keen to make that investment just yet. I'll see how things go with this channel. I had like 5 subscribers in February, so it's growing in a way I never imagined, so who knows!

Idk man, getting attacked constantly off camera made me hate this boss and rank it C or lower. The majority of DS3 bosses force me to rotate the camera constantly which means that i have to take my thumb off the sprint button so I'm jogging around slowly while the boss zips around like Sonic.
@jermergerg
Ай бұрын
Hmm that wasn't really my experience with DS3 bosses; I find that the camera lock-on generally works quite well, although there are a few exceptions. Sorry you had a bad experience with it!
I agree but not better than gael
@jermergerg
Ай бұрын
agree, gael is the best, twin princes are second best. I have a whole video about gael!
Nah they're too easy. Lorian's vacuum slicer attack is literally the only attack that has enough of a delay compared to the other attacks to actually mix up the timing for your rolls. All of the other attacks can be side rolled through as soon as you see him do any attack animation. They should have given him a second delayed attack with a different timing and made the pathetic little fire cone he does linger for a longer amount of time like Iron King's fire attacks. The Crucible Knight duo fight in Elden Ring where one has the spear and the other the greatsword is unironically a more engaging fight. I don't get this cope about ER duo fights being bad when ERs basic enemies have better, more engaging movesets than any DS3 boss, which allows From to stick two random mobs together and have the fight still be better than anything in DS3. The only good duo fight in DS3 are the twin princes because they have so much health. Actually I suppose Michael realized how piss easy the base game was in general so he made every Ringed City boss into a health sponge. Purely based on mechanics and excluding presentation and lore or whatever the gap between DS3 and ER is so gigantic that the Leonine Misbegotten, a regular enemy actually has a better, more complex and engaging moveset than Phase 1 Gael, Dark Souls' supposed magnum opus
@jermergerg
Ай бұрын
Alright well I don't agree with any of that, but I do want to emphasize that I didn't say anything about Elden Ring's duo bosses in general, but rather about the Valiant Gargoyles. I love Elden Ring, it's one of my favorite games, and I have some Elden Ring videos. But Valiant Gargoyles is a bad fight in my opinion, and every game has some fights that are better than others.
