I like your rig. Im prejudiced though as I have a PK Ranger with auto and a custom aluminium tray. The suspension has been rebuilt. A Tommy S6X sits on the tray. Im extremely happy with it. Done the Simpson, Border track,Plenty highway etc etc. I love it ,buts its not for folk who like the altimate in luxury. But you seem practical and down to earth.. I have a 23Zero 270 degree awning I seldom use poles, unless very windy. 3 minutes to set up,about 5 min to roll up.I agree poles ,guy ropes, pegs a bit of a pain. But worth it if extremely hot or raining. Regards Grant

Thanks Grant, appreciate it. Awesome, the Ranger and Tommy is a great combo! Sounds like you've had some epic adventures in it. Interesting, might try it without the poles if there is no wind - thanks for the tip! Cheers, George

Thanks for the heads up on this video. Nothing like receiving valuable information from a camper user as opposed to a sales person. I guess you're both now on the hunt for your 4th camper, the X. Not that it's really necessary but have you had it off the vehicle since you've had it?

No worries at all. Amazingly, we're not looking for another camper! We've never been tempted to take it off the Ute. It only takes a few minutes to pack down / set up so it's nice having everything with us at all times

Very well presented! A lot of detailed information on both the UTE and the Tommy camper. Blue sky, ocean and white sandy beach make the perfect backdrop. Thanks for sharing.

Great information. Very informative. The biggest gripe we had. Were the Door locks. It drove me crazy. Locking and unlocking the 5 locks on the 3 doors. I changed them to Black Powered Whale Tail and the rear Door to a Wireless RV lock. I slaved The Whale Tail locks from the RV lock. Using a eBay relay board. So they now all open and close using a 3 FOBs or Bluetooth using Phone app. There is no cutting at all with the outer skin. They go in the same cut outs. But you do need to notch the door reinforcing beam. As internally they are a little bigger. This was not a cheap mod. Took me a little planning, time to acquire materials and some testing. I did think seriously about slaving them off the Utes locks. But this would only allow it to work, with the modified Ute. I have used our camper on 3 different Utes now. Extra FOB on the key chain. Is hardly a inconvenience. In a Wollies car park.

Thanks, really appreciate it. I agree with the door locks, if somehow it could be wired through the Anderson that any Ute which is plugged in could operate a central locking system, that would be the dream. I’ve considered it, but it would be an involved process as you mentioned. Maybe Tommy Campers can add this on as a future extra 🤔 It would be a nice to have indeed!

Great video and really good basic and down to earth info. We went with the Tommy Camper S4x, the X version which is newer is certainly a bit better for space and looks The Black looks good, but its Australia so Black attracts the heat a lot more and also even though its counter intuitive white looks cleaner when dirtly. If anyone is interested in more details on the Tommy Camper some other independent and really good and detailed reviews and info about them is here: www.youtube.com/@CanopyCampingAustralia/videos

Thank you! Great to meet another Tommy owner! I’ve followed Wayne’s channel for years, so appreciate you posting it here. Do you know him? The Tommy looks great in black or white, I think it comes down to personal preference (and in our case as we were purchasing it second hand we didn’t have a choice). I do agree with you on the dust / dirt showing on the Tommy. Our camper usually looks dirtier than our Ute! Cheers, George

Great setup it looks awesome. Great for a couple and don't have to tow 3 tonnes behind you. Hey are you travelling with a dog? I haven't seen it but I probably haven't watched all your vids. If you are I'd love for you to make a vid on it. Just because I'm about to and have concerns about it. Cheers mate great channel.

Thanks mate! Appreciate it. I just saw your profile picture and our dogs look very similar! Check out my earlier videos (from years ago in Sydney) to see our dog. We set off with our dog but unfortunately it didn’t work out so she is staying with family in NSW. I know it’s a big decision with lots to consider! I probably don’t know enough about travelling with a dog to make a video on it, but I totally get it’s a tough call with a lot of things to consider.

I'm interested in your custom built slide on camper as I was thinking of going this route. Was it a similar style to the Tommy Camper or something completely different?

  • @GeorgeSoan

It was something completely different with all the bells and whistles (internal shower etc). Turns out all of this added a lot of weight which was an expensive mistake. We realised that we prefer to be outdoors 95% of the time, so having everything easily accessible outside was better for our scenario. What slide on companies are you looking at? What type of Ute is it going on? Cheers

Ranger or Hilux, Ranger are nice cars but don't have the reliability or longevity of the Hilux. Of course a Landcruiser is a step up again, but price is going to be higher again and for the Toyota as their resale reflects their reliability, parts availability etc. Just check out the resale value of a 10 year old Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger/BT50, Mitsi Triton or even the Isuzu, they are all good vehicles but there is a reason that they are only worth roughly half of what a similar Hilux is.
