Why this comment "Why the Protestant Reformation is a Tragedy" is itself a TRAGEDY. @@thomashammer9641 I have been a Protestant for over 40+ years, working as a minister, missionary, exorcist, and teacher, and I can tell you that the Catholic Church IS the true Church of Jesus Christ, and THAT is why I am now taking steps to unite with the Catholics, and to divorce myself from the errors of the Protestant schisms, factions, divisions, and splits. Anything founded on works of the FLESH cannot possibly be holy and approved of God. Yes, changes were needed within the Catholic Church, and God has used the splits to bring these changes about. This very thing reminds me of how God caused the division of the Northern and Southern Kingdoms of Israel in order to get each branch to change, leading to a uniting over time, all in Christ Jesus.

A priest once said that theology has gone down after the Church stopped requiring intensive philosophy before theology. This priest said philosophy is the hands that enables students to grasp theology, and without philosophy you will never truly understand theology.

That was one of the things that Luther hated. He despised Aristotle and called reason the devil's harlot.

@PeteGalvez What's tragic is the protestant groups deceiving hundreds of millions of people, with 35,000 differing versions of protestantism all claiming to have been guided by the Holy Spirit. How is that possible? Tell me in your Bible where it states everything we can learn about Jesus Christ and His Church is in the Bible? Historically the Church preceded the Bible, the Apostles were already teaching and preaching without any definitive canon of books in the bible. Check your Church history. How would they be able to get anything accomplished or resolved without a Bible? They had Councils. The Catholic Church is the very reason the World has a Bible to study. If the protestant groups who claim to have the correct interpretation of scripture ever find some common ground with one another you might have a leg to stand on. Until that time the private interpretation of protestantism has led so many astray from the true Church. Are you saying the teachings you mentioned are unbiblical or unwritten? Unwritten or unfound doesn't mean unbiblical or untrue. It means they haven't been explicitly written down like millions of other things Jesus said or did.

Most of these Protestants sincerely believe that they have the truth, they don't realize that they are the victims of heresy. I feel very sorry that they have been manipulated. We can give them the truth but we can't give them the Wisdom to understand it.. Wisdom is the first Gift of the Holy Spirit.

Do Catholics adhere to (must read) Ephesians 1:4-5 and God's required 1 Peter 1:14-16, supported by 2 Peter 1:3-4. If not, it's outright MONEYpulation. The summary at the end is very good. Episode 2 is much easier to follow than this Episode 1.

His research and factual content is mesmerisingly good; for me, particularly the English history element of it. I will return to this presentation again and again. (His delivery, however, I find more than a little distracting and, for me, it does continually let the presentation down somewhat. A less obvious effort to both sound, and to appear, ‘academic’ would probably achieve both of those two secondary (and lesser) goals to some greater effect.)

Is it me or was there an audio problem in the beginning of the video?

The audio in these lectures, whether on Vimeo or KZread, is very poorly mixed such that requires one to turn their volume up all the way on whichever device it is played on - and even still some whispered phrases escape me while loud declarations are startling. Simple compression of the highs and lows would be of great value to these videos.

Why talk about the Church's disfigurement when Protestant sects and the Eastern Orthodox faithful are outside the Church?

I have since rid myself of it, but I bought a copy of the Little Rock Scripture Study Bible a couple years ago. There were introductory articles by the main editors of this study bible. I thought it unusual that one of the editors, not especially endorsing this edition of the Bible, instead praised Luther's Bible as "one" of the "great" achievements of the Reformation. I wrote the bishop of Little Rock, to press him for an explanation of these remarks, to which he had rendered his imprimatur or nihil obstat (I don't remember which -- maybe both). He basically fumbled through a response, with no defense of the "great" achievement comment. I still have not understood how a "Catholic" scholar could praise any achievements of the Reformation.

This reveals exactly what Luther and other reformers were concerned about. A religion that focuses on Mary rather than Jesus, prayers rather than prayer, pursuit of citings (ad relics) rather than faith in Christ via Scripture, and experiences instead of the truth of Scripture. Just consider how many common Catholic practices are simply not found in Scriptures, but arose during the middle ages when the Scriptures were kept from the laity, and folklore reigned instead.

@@chaddonal4331 It wasn't just the Middle Ages when the laity did not have personal bibles. Books were too expensive before the printing press. And Mary is the way to Jesus- this is scriptural. You do know the Christmas story? And who was at the cross with Jesus? And who was in the Upper Room with the disciples at Pentecost? Where you find Mary, there you will find Jesus Our Lord.

You deny Mary the respect she deserves. You even denigrate people who give her love and respect, by saying they are committing idolatry. The Catholic Church condemns idolatry. You are a liar.

Let me make my observation. It seems like we make our enemies a straw men in a bit to build ourselves up. I have learned and approached history the best that I can. I am and was raised Lutheran, And i really appreciate Luther's pastoral approach. Given the trend of where the church was going at the time, I can't imagine this was not necessary. As far as Luther as a person, I think if you look at Luther's life, you would find that he was his biggest critic. So in the midst of history and what is and was concerned with, we all have choices. How we frame things makes are structures survive and eventually perish. I believe that Luther did more to push us to what survives (Logos), than the church of the day. Today is a new story, we should find out what makes us Christian. I don't believe a mature church should need Rome, but here is where we find ourselves. When the lamb and lion can lay down.

Yes that is very nice analogy - lions and lamb laying down as if to rest after long fight - together in garden of Eden:) It is not possible to force catholicism on others. It is good to share the info on theology though because so many people really don´t know theology of their own churches. Then when people have good understanding of that they can make informed choices. I am catholic myself and more and more I am getting into apologetics more and more it grounds me in my church. It is nowadays though. Cathilic church at that time was completely different story. I would have still prefered if Martin Luther did his reform within the church without creating separate theology. There were many reformes at that time who went through hell from authorities and kept their reforms within the frame of original theology... And the reforms stood and helped overcome a lot within the church to make it closer to Christ again. To me splitting the church over reform was a tragedy - not the reform itself. But both are responsible - caholic church for being power greedy opressive not focusing enough on gospel and pushing against reforms and reformers such as Martin Luther who instead of pushing back inside the frame of original theology created their own thing and split the church. At least it gives us opportunity to do the lion lamb thing. And catholic church had to reform much faster within itself because of existence of competing churches. But still the split breaks my heart.

We need to surrender to Jesus when we pray and listen. And read The Bible. If it opposes GOD'S Word, we must reject it. GOD hates sin.

I'm sure that Luther himself would point you to the Lord's Prayer and to John 17, and to the Psalms, and to Paul's prayers. Those are biblically mandated prayers! Luther's aim (only partly fulfilled) was to jettison non-biblical accretions to true biblical religion and reclaim the religion actually taught by the Holy Scriptures.

It has not withstood the test of time. Hinduism seems to have stood strong because it doesn't claim anything at all. It's fundamental philosophy is Pantheism (God is All and All is God) and it easily proved false by the Kalam Cosmological Argument. You can please refer to that argument kind Sir.

Why this comment "Why the Protestant Reformation is a Tragedy" is itself a TRAGEDY. Because it is a sad defense against the Protestant Reformation which freed the world from the obvious lingering unbiblical stance of Roman Catholicism. One evidence is where in Holy Scripture is Purgatory? And where in the Bible is the apostle Peter designated as the first pope? Can Catholics reject "We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all" and "For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time-to show us his grace through Christ Jesus" (Hebrews 10:10 and 2 Timothy 1:9)? Catholic holiness needs to go through beatification and canonizing to be declared a saint. The Bible is clear that "Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes." (Ephesians 1:4) Reason why this command, "Be holy in all your conduct; for it is written, 'Be holy for I am holy'" (1 Peter 1:15-16)-awesomely achievable by the dynamic power of God the Holy Spirit indwelling genuine Christians (see Romans 5:5, 8:13). First of all you would NEVER had had a Bible at all without the Catholic Church. The Bible is the result of the work of the Catholic Church. Everything we say and do is based on Bible teachings. Therefore to say we are unbiblical is the greatest untruth of all. Luther distorted everything and made up his OWN THEOLOGY . Started a new MAN made Church instead of the Church instituted by Christ Himself. That is the tragedy. To deny self Scripturally is to truly experience "My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." (Galatians 2:20). In other words, Christ is our Substitute who absorbed our sins (2 Corinthians 5:21) and intensely suffered the penalty of our sins on the cross. The wondrous follow-through of this is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in every true Christian (see 14:16; Romans 5:5, 8:13-16) who tremendously and dynamically enables true believers in Christ to marvelously experience practical, superbly effective denying self by eagerly, lovingly, worshipfully, and JOYFULLY follow Christ's "If you love me, obey my commands" (John 14:15). This is in connection with Christ's "If you want to follow me, deny yourself and take up your cross daily" (Luke 9:23). That is, kill your self-centeredness daily . . . by the power of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, any amount of fasting, self-denial, and prayers are rendered futile.

Or actually: it might have... read Paul and John on "another gospel" and "another spirit"... You follow yourself, my friend: you follow Jesus Galvez. Do you admit to the possibility that your understanding of justification is FALSE, Pete? That Jesus Galvez is a fraud?

Astounding how the conclusion only admits error from Luther, rather than an accompanying recognition that so much error within RCC needed to be addressed. Luther began the process of opening the wound of so many things amiss. The counter Reformation quickly addressed a few of those issues and shut down the rest of the process. When we refuse to do self-reflection and self-reformation, God will often send a prophet to rebuke us. Jesus' primary lament was that Jerusalem denied, fought against, and even killed the prophets God had sent. Rome didn't learn from Jerusalem.

@@anomalousviewer3164 It seems you reacted to the adjective, so I've removed it. Plenty of examples of prophets mentioned in the OT, and Jesus' summary, which I alluded to. The point stands: The RCC remains unreformed in countless ways, having chosen to rebuke (and even burn at the stake) multiple prophets who called them back to God's truth in His Scriptures, and rather chose to perpetuate many non-biblical traditional practices. The lecture here was valuable in revealing many things problematic about Luther's character and approach. But it largely failed to address very real theological and ecclesiological abuses within the Vatican. Ah, what might have been if church leaders were marked by humility to receive biblical rebuke and seek to honor God's ways more than perpetuating misguided traditions.

Let's not forget how many Christians were executed by protestants following the formation of the protestant herasy. I find no values in following a man that had dreams with the devil, broke his vow of celibacy, married a former nun, denied some Apostolic bibical teachings and became one of the heads of his newly formed church. How much of his thinking had to do with the political influence that was happening in Germany?

However, those who have studied the scriptures for prophetic ministry have well noted: the more common prophetic ministry (i.e. more than foretelling the future and more than speaking new revelation from God) is calling of God's people back to what has already been revealed. This ongoing "prophetic" ministry is included in the callings of preachers and teachers of God's word. We do not make up new revelation (whether Popes or charismatics). We persist in teaching, proclaiming, and living what the inspired Scriptures teach. What the Scriptures actually teach and affirm provides the basis (and the "it is written" declarative force) to resist, overturn, and reform what was not ever written that has usurped what was written.

It seems, rather, that God has allowed various traditions to emerge and extend through time, which each share an overlapping faith juxtaposed by various distinctions. The EO also is in need of a Reformation. While it contains truth, it likewise has accrued various errors along the way that have not been addressed or even acknowledged. There is much beauty in EO. But also many post-biblical accretions codified from the hellenistic era that have outlived their time. There is a western reformation principle that is well heeded: Reformed and always still Reforming.

The real tragedy is that the papacy became so corrupt that people could no longer stomach it( indulgences and so on)

We need another one. One thing about Calvinists is they are not afraid to say the morales that Jesus, Paul and Peter teach in the Bible. It seems to me the Catholic Church is choosing to only teach Jesus’ love and forgiveness and not teach what Jesus asks us to do. With The pope’s new tone abortion and homosexual weddings will be acceptable in no time.

The opposite is true. Catholics are always reminded that we must work to follow Jesus’s Commandments, and it is work because we are sinners. I believe in Jesus but if I do not follow his rules in my life I am not going to heaven. I have to cooperate With the gift of salvation that he gives.. I am not happy with our Pope. I think he is misguided at best. He is doing great damage to the church by not supporting traditional orders of nuns and priests, by encouraging the LGBTQXYZ agenda, by censoring traditional holy priests and upholding ones who have shown themselves to be against the church. The pope also doesn’t seem to make a distinction between being a follower of Jesus and being a follower of allah or some pagan god.

If the papacy -- the supposed Vicar of Christ on earth -- cannot represent Christ accurately, then the whole idea of the RCC being the true church is revealed to be a ruse.

There were other people who criticized the abuses happening within the Church (as they should) such as St. Catherine of Genoa (I think... I could be thinking of St. Catherine of Sienna). The difference between Luther and the great Saints and Reformers was the reaction to the all too prevalent corruption. Instead of doing the right thing ie living by example and challenging the Church to go back to her roots, the Protestants threw the baby out with the bathwater.

Why this comment "Why the Protestant Reformation is a Tragedy" is itself a TRAGEDY. Because it is a sad defense against the Protestant Reformation which freed the world from the obvious lingering unbiblical stance of Roman Catholicism. One evidence is where in Holy Scripture is Purgatory? And where in the Bible is the apostle Peter designated as the first pope? Can Catholics reject "We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all" and "For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time-to show us his grace through Christ Jesus" (Hebrews 10:10 and 2 Timothy 1:9)? Catholic holiness needs to go through beatification and canonizing to be declared a saint. The Bible is clear that "Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes." (Ephesians 1:4) Reason why this command, "Be holy in all your conduct; for it is written, 'Be holy for I am holy'" (1 Peter 1:15-16)-awesomely achievable by the dynamic power of God the Holy Spirit indwelling genuine Christians (see Romans 5:5, 8:13). Avoiding parts of Scripture is outright unbiblical. And TRAGIC. THINK.

I urge you to research Church History and read the Church Fathers because they were not Protestant. Yes I would see responsibility in both. Roman catholic church growing more and more power greedy not focusing enough on message of gospel and behaving in contrary to it. And then reformers like Luther instead of working on reforms inside the church creating completely different theology and causing split. There were many catholic reformers at that time who didn´t do this and were working within the church and it´s theology. They went through hell from autorities but their reforms stand and are beneficial to this day... So to me responsibility is on both sides. Catholic church created environment of oppression in which reforms were needed but very difficult to achieve and reformers such as Luther using the opportunity to create conflicting theology and spliting the church.

There is One Truth. The Catholic Church created the bible. It preserved the sacred tradition of the first centuries before there was a "bible". It closed the canon of the bible. For 1500 years the authority of the Catholic Church was recognized. Who has the authority to interpret the bible? You? Me? No the Church. The Catholic Church. Protestants have usurped that authority and now there is no Truth. Each protestant believes the Holy Spirit has given him the Truth. Logically that is a lie. Because protestants disagree on everything! There is chaos! But Truth is preserved in the Catholic Church!

The lutheran reformation was more than necessary. Is the gospel necessary? Is faith a gift of God and necessary? Is theology important and necessary to be clear and true? Are the sacraments acts of grace of God and necessary? Is God's grace necessary and the only medium for us to be saved? Is grace or works or both of them necessary for our justification? Yes, we are saved by faith, apart of works. We don't have free will for salvation. Jesus is the only way for our salvation. Not Jesus and us. Only Jesus. Only as the Bible informs us. Only by faith. Only by grace. All the glory, dear Roman Catholic brothers, only to God. Yes, the Lutheran Reformation was more than necessary. It was the gospel on the top of church's message again. If you agree, stop to follow Rome and come to the true and genuine Catholic, Orthodox and Evangelical church. Find a confessional lutheran church and be joyful.

Why is the reformation a tragedy. To provide a different voice to the corruption and greed of the catholic church was a good thing. The split that happened only tells you the depth of that corruption.

If you think every thing is about The Catholic Church, nothing else matters and there is only self interest where the relationship of Catholic to Christianity becomes like Coca Cola is to water. The present trial in The Vatican of a Cardinal for corruption is just another marker of the church's not so glorious history. Maybe you can find a text to explain this as a proper and universal Catholic endeavour. Having said all that The Christian Church has been the greatest and most important institution and creator of Western Civilisation. Without it we would still be living barbaric, painful and hungry lives. This is my discernment, blessed or otherwise.

Sorry to bring you back to Earth but joining any mob, including a Protestant sect / church / gathering etc is not something I would do and the only speaking I would do to Jesus is through thoughtful actions. I am an admirer of Jesus but not a Christian or follower of any religion and my critique of the Catholic Institution was only an opinion of one small moment in it's amazing and worthwhile history. My refusal to see ''the truth'' is for you a personal affront but sometimes truth has the ring of humbug and it is hard, unless like you a Know All, to discern between the two.

In case you didn't read or learned, a Church is a community of believers and not one is guilty of someone else's faults. As Scripture tells you clearly: "It is appointed for a man to die once and be judged" (Heb.9:27). I ask you: Do you see the word "Church" in that quote? Can you accept you made a ridiculous statement, just like any other member of an anti catholic sects does? I suggest you reflect thoroughly before publicly expressing such nonsensical statements.

After Luther, public schools were open in all parts of Germany and a program was implemented to teach kids, so everyone could learn to read the bible (when just elite citizens had access to education in Catholic countries). This spread throughout all protestant countries. The Protestant culture opened way to freedom of religion, the end of slavery, civil disobedience, social work, etc etc. Impacted positively Law, philosophy and democracy and more. Protestantism finally allowed everyone to cherish their own Bible.

Luther admitted in a letter toward the end of his life that the aftermath of his “reformation” was that people cared less about the Bible and religion in general; and it hasn’t gotten better in the past 500 years. I converted to Catholicism after reading the Bible as an adult and I make a point of avoiding book, chapter or verse references when I quote the Bible in discussions about the gospel as a litmus test to see who actually reads their Bible. Protestants don’t recognize the word of scripture; they’ll even deny that it’s the word of God to begin with.

My brother is baptist and has fully embraced calvin's teachings, including, once saved/always saved, never having to repent for sin anymore, and plans to be leaving soon via the pre tribulation rapture.

Being articulate does not erase the awesome truth that medieval darkness includes murdering persons/martyrs who translated the Bible from Latin, Hebrew, and Greek, to English and other attendant languages, and dynamically promoting the absolute necessity of such translations in order that people at long last would know and understand God's Word in acycord with "Sanctify them with your truth. Your Word is truth" (John 17:17). How about fully understanding Ephesians 1:3-5 and 1 Peter 1:14-16? And accusing Christ a liar when He declared on the cross "It is finished." (Paid in full) with your unbiblical Purgatory! And revising the Ten Commandments during the Council of Trent. How dare! Read the warning of God in Deuteronomy 4:2. THINK! You misrepresent everything that the Catholic Church teaches. You create problems in the Catholic doctrine that are not there. Of course we agree with Scripture. Catholics wrote it, canonized it, edited, distributed it, and preached it long before Luther was even born. @PETE GALVEZ Pete, Did you know the literacy rate in the 16th century in Europe was 16%? Do you know what it was in the previous centuries? Then how in the world would you so happily condemn the Catholic Church founded by Christ when even one Bible, prior to the appearance of the printing press, was extremely expensive since it had to be done by hand and take a great deal of time? And God the Holy Spirit indwelling every true Christian (Romans 8:55, 8:13) can reveal the correct interpretation of Holy Scripture (1 Corinthians 2:5:12) thereby he/she can apply God's precepts and commands correctly. And JOYFULLY. Anything not in Scripture results in false belief, and tradition not found in the Bible TRAGICALLY RESULTS IN SHALLOW LIVING. To contest this is to doubt Scripture and its Author, God Himself. Are you familiar with this command . . . "Be holy in all your conduct; for it is written, 'Be Holy for I am Holy'" (1 Peter 1:15-16)?Supernaturally, progressively, and eagerly achievable by the dynamic empowering of the Holy Spirit. The Pelagian Heresy is Salvation according to man's free will not according to God's Sovereign Grace. Jesus Propitiatory and Substitonary death on the cross was for his Elect, Chosen people before the foundation of the world according to God's Eternal Counsel and Predestination according to the Sovereign, Immutable Will and Wisdom. So, an entire revolution because he couldnt handle the celibacy vow he made to God.... Also, Paul said celibacy was the most perfect way, and Jesus was celibate and talked about being celibate for the kingdom of heaven's sake. So definitely not abnormal and unadjusted lives. @@anomalousviewer3164 Anyone who was not a Catholic or people who were not successful in being converted to Catholicism (such as Jews who "converted" just to be left alone in public but were secretly worshipping Judaism - or people thought to be even if they weren't).

It's a tragedy because it exposed Rome.

The Catholic Church knows who Jesus is, but they are weak in getting people saved. They are too attached to sacraments, rather than to the Word of God and the power of the Spirit.

Therefore, if any one knows and understands the Bible it is the Catholic Church guided by The Holy Spirit promised by Jesus. Sadly, people like you ignore the truth clearly spoken by our Lord and promote a different Gospel, according to the man named Luther, called: "Sola Scriptura"; absent in Scripture. Just Romans 4:16 and Galatians 2:21 should be enough to convince you that you are on the wrong path. You are an Italian why not study the Waldensians who suffered at the hands of the Papacy for no other reason than that they were evangelicals. All the apostles were evangelicals. If not what do you make of Acts 15:7-11, where Peter sounds like Calvin. Humble yourself while reading scripture, Habakkuk 2:4, Romans 1:17, Gal.3:11, Hebrews 10:38, Phil. 3:9, Titus 3:5-7. I dare you to read the Scriptures I have listed. Face it man the Bible is an evangelical tract.

Still whining about it 500 years later. If the catholic church had kept focus on what Jesus and his true disciples taught, there would not have been a need for the reformation. The reformation at least seems to have encouraged catholics to actually read the bible. The next step would be to actually understand what it says.

Because of free will given to us many fallible men continues to protest Catholic Church. They argue Bible has authority over the Church

Well, Mr. Protestant, no one is complaining, they are only clarifying certain historical facts for Catholics, since you Protestants love to twist the facts, including the scriptures, to attack the Catholic Church and even form lies.

Agreed. Be thankful for what a he Spirit was doing thru Luther. The Church is always in need of reformation and we must be open to hearing from the Word and Spirit for those reforms. We certainly need those moments of conversion in our own personal lives and certainly in the brighter Church.

The Reformation rejected the interpretations endorsed and accepted by the Early Church Fathers like Jerome, Ireneaus, and Augustine. It did not offer anything new that had not been refuted previously.

Arrogance of men sperated THE CHURCH OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST! JESUS EVEN REQUESTED HIS CHURCH NOT BE DIVIDED! AMEN! AMEN! AMEN! AMEN! FOCUS OF HIS BODY AND BLOOD AS HE REQUESTED! AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!

Unbelievable. Like reformation happened in vacuum. Like Roman church was so good and than came evil Martin. Not one word mentioning, how destructive, killing, corrupt and deadly Roman church at that time was. This is for people who knows nothing about history.
