After years of growing ties between the Philippines and China under former President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines has since renewed its close alliance with the United States. President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr has signed several agreements, including one that allows US troops to be stationed at additional Philippine military bases. The deal comes amid growing tension between Beijing and Manila over competing claims in the South China Sea.

Filipinos crying bullying when they are making a historical claim on Malaysian land in Sabah as a prize for participation in quelling a rebellion for a former Malay Sultan Bullying the Malaysians as Filipinos in 2013 invaded Sabah causing the demise of 71 people. Where Malaysia clearly wins the proximity claim as Sabah is attached to Malaysia and the sea separates the Philippines (In fact there are a few islands controlled by the Philippines that are closer to Malaysia than the Philippines off the shores of Malaysian land) if we are arguing proximity Why is the proximity debate important Because the Philippines dispute in the SCS with China stems from the fact they make a formal proximity claim against China in the 1970s on disputed islands and waters Where China makes a 12th century historical claim that the Philippines formally dismissed in the 2016 ICJ tribunal they unilaterally brought forth True Chinese expansionism in that 12th Century was when the Mongol Yuan Dynasty ruled China. And conquered the largest territory in history But it is considered a Dynasty just like when the Manchu Dynasty ruled China Plus Filipinos like to bring out a 15th century map of their former Spanish colonizer to bolster their own claim,

@@user-gd2sd6xs7oyou’re missing the issue. Malvinas is an island territory. What the Chinese bully is claiming are shoals and reefs it destroyed by means of land reclamation, then militarizing it. thus in effect, destroying precious marine resources. These shoals and reefs are more than 600NM away from China and within 200NM exclusive economic zone of the Philippines as defined under the United Nations law of the seas. Not only a bully by preventing Filipino fisherman to fish in our own waters, but also an environment abuser.

The thing is, distance isnt really a determining factor of a claim. But China does not have the right to stop filipinos from going there because it is well within the philippine exclusive economic zone. That said, I dont think even china believes in their fairy tale story. They just want to forcibly claim it because they are preparing to invade taiwan, and that place is a strategic spot. Now they have military bases there and no one can do anything about it.

The Philippines and the US had been allies since 1951. It has not "returned" to its alliance with the US because the Philippines and the US had not broken that alliance, which was the oldest of its kind in Asia. Duterte may have flirted with China but that was it. The people of the Philippines and the American people have a long history of friendship which can't be easily broken by Duterte or others like him.

Their 9-dash line claim was filed in 1949 and when they announced it, none of the neighboring countries objected to it. All the claims of the othercountries also were way before the UNCLOS. UNCLOS was just implemented in the late 90s, you can't have a late international supercede claims that were filed way way before that and not expect objections. Also, I'm sure you don't know this but Vietnam also claims all of the Spratley group of islands too like China. in fact to this day, Vietnam have control of most of the islands/atolls/isles there. they have about 25, philippines have about 9, China have about 7, and the rest have one or two.

Is not that China wants more power. You need to understand that China is surrounded by US military bases; in South Korea, Japan, Guam, and the Philippines. Please don't forget about history, China never colonized the Philippines, it was the Spaniards and the United States. It would help if you asked yourselves this question; how is it that the son of Fernand Marcos is now the president when his father was overthrown by the people. When Marco left the Phillippines, who took him in? You see the answer is right in front for you to see.

The result is not according to what they want as the Philippines chose to prepare for any contingency including shoring up its defenses in the north facing Taiwan, and its facilities in the West Philippine Sea. With the economy picking up and now growing consistently, its about time for the Philippines to invest in its defense. Timeline of the South China Sea dispute * It has been claimed by the People's Republic of China on the argument that since 200 BCE Chinese fishermen have used the Spratly islands * Naval forces of the Liu Song dynasty (420-479 CE) patrolled the Paracel and Spratly islands.[5] In the Tang dynasty (618-907 CE), the islands were placed under the administration and authority of the Qiongzhou Prefecture (now Hainan Province).[5] The Chinese administration of the South China Sea continued into the Song dynasty (960-1279 CE).[5] * Archaeologists have found Chinese made potteries porcelains and other historical relics from the Southern dynasties (420-589 CE), the Sui dynasty (581-619 CE), the Tang dynasty, the Song dynasty, the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368 CE), the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 CE) and later eras up to modern times on the South China Sea islands.[5] 1876 - China makes its earliest documented claim to the Paracel Islands[citation needed] 1883 - When the Spratlys and Paracels were surveyed by Germany in 1883, China issued protests. 1887 - In the 19th century, Europeans found that Chinese fishermen from Hainan annually visited the Spratly islands for part of the year, while in 1877 it was the British who launched the first modern legal claims to the Spratlys 1902 - China sends naval forces on inspection tours of the Paracel Islands to preempt French claims.[28] Scholar François-Xavier Bonnet argued that per Chinese records, these expeditions never occurred and were backdated during the 1970s.[29][30] 1907 - China sends another naval force, this time to plan for resource exploitation.[28] 1911 - The newly formed Republic of China, successor state to the Qing dynasty, moves administration of the Paracel Islands to Hainan,[28] which would not become a separate Chinese province until 1988. 1946 - The R.O.C. established garrisons on both Woody (now Yongxing / 永兴) Island in the Paracels and Taiping Island in the Spratlys. France protested. The French tried but failed to dislodge Chinese nationalist troops from Yongxing Island/Woody Island (the only habitable island in the Paracels), but were able to establish a small camp on Pattle (now Shanhu / 珊瑚) Island in the southwestern part of the archipelago.[37][38][39] The Republic of China drew up The Southern China Sea Islands Location Map, marking the national boundaries in the sea with 11 lines, two of which were later removed, showing the U-shaped claim on the entire South China Sea, and showing the Spratly and Paracels in Chinese territory, in 1947.[28] The Americans reminded the Philippines at its independence in 1946 that the Spratlys was not Philippine territory, both to not anger Chiang Kai-shek in China and because the Spratlys were not part of the Philippines per the 1898 treaty Spain signed with America.[38] 1950 - After the Chinese nationalists were driven from Hainan by the People's Liberation Army (PLA), they withdrew their garrisons in both the Paracels and Spratlys to Taiwan. 1969 - A UN sponsored research team discovers oil under the sea floor of the island group. 1970 - China occupies Amphitrite Group of the Paracel Islands * In 1596, the Spanish Colonial Government declared that each island in the Kalayaan Islands, now known as the Spratly Islands, had Barangay or Barrio status. 1971 - Philippines announces claim to islands adjacent to its territory in the Spratlys, which they named Kalayaan, which was formally incorporated into Palawan Province in 1972. The Philippines President Marcos announced the claims after Taiwanese troops attacked and shot at a Philippine fishing boat on Itu Aba.[ Wikipedia

The reason that the Philippines rekindled its relationship with the U.S.A is obviously related to its Mutual Defense Agreement (MDA) and most importantly owing to the aggresive annexation stance of China on Philippine territorial entitlements of which the past administrations have given less importance to in lieu of developmental projects. It is a blessing though that PBBM came to power in time to act on the bullying of China of which might have become laches in law had he continued with the defeatist attitude of his predecessor.

Their claims do not have any historical basis, even if they claim to have one. Their claims don't have any basis on the international law whereas every country has exclusive rights to lay claim of any landmass or water within 200 nautical miles beyond it's shore. China has exceeded this maritime law and now claims to have historical claims despite having none. For your information, the Philippines won the International Tribunal Court and China has not historically exercised exclusive control of the area therefore it does not have any historical claims on that area. UNCLOS has jurisdiction in 168 countries that ratified it and China is one of them. you gotta let your lame argument go. The 2016 Ruling is an UNCLOS ruling it was constituted under Annex VII of UNCLOS what is there that's hard to understand or you're just deliberately lying to yourself? PCA is not a part of UN because it's not supposed to. UN said it themselves that they dont have any jurisdiction over the case so why would you go to UN for arbitration? When UNCLOS has its own judicial body (ITLOS) Who adjudicated and constituted the Arbitral Ruling not the PCA. The PCA is just a registrar who only facilitates the arbitration. Chinas 2006 opt out clause is only limited to subjects of Article 298 and none of the subjects in Article 298 are part of 2016 Arbitral Ruling. You're referring to historic rights of bays? China’s presence in the SCS is not against the Phillipines but a protest against American military presence there as their presence in Europe with NATO. USA is not a member of UNCLOS, US exceptionalism is its own problem. Macos’ reason to side with US is the promise by its administration that his father, the former President Ferdinand Marcos’ assets frozen by the US will be returned to him if he sides with the US. administration. The American people generally are lovely but its administration put there by the lobbyists with connection to the military industrial complexes is the problem. ASEAN must be aware what US has done to Europe ,especially Germany with the Ukraine war. Hopefully the Phillipines will have clear thinking before jumping into alliance with US and avoid a war in this region which will be devastating to a stable Asia. Furthermore the SCS conflicts is not new. They are contesting parties to this region. Vietnam, Bruinei and even Taiwan have claims to the region. These conflicts can be solved without the US intervention . Freedom of navigation for whom when you consider 80% of China’s trades pass through this region. Is it freedom of navigation for the US against the Chinese. Everyone should watch the videos by Prof Kishore M. to understand the real situation. More than 350 years later, the sultan's heirs have come to remind Malaysians that they still consider Sabah to be part of Sulu and, by extension, part of the Philippines. "Sabah is our home," they said simply when asked why they had come. But history is not that simple and of course Malaysia has no intention of giving up Sabah to this little band of Filipinos. The crux of their disagreement lies in a contract made in 1878, between the Sultanate of Sulu and the British North Borneo Company. Under this contract known as pajak, the company could occupy Sabah in perpetuity as long as it paid a regular sum of money. Even today, Malaysia pays about 5,000 Malaysian ringgit (£1,000, $1,500) a year to the Sultanate of Sulu. But the British and, after that an independent Malaysia, interpreted pajak to mean sale, while the Sulu Sultanate has always maintained it means lease. "In my opinion, this is more consistent with a lease rather than a sale, because you can't have a purchase price which is not fixed and which is payable until kingdom come," said Harry Roque, a law professor at the University of the Philippines. Philippines was never an internationally recognized sovereign nation until it became independent from its US master after WW2 & has no history of any connection with the relevant South China Sea territories whatsoever. When China progressively discovered, charted & inhabited the South China Sea islands, isles & reefs as no man territories over a thousand years ago, only tribal states of different rulers which fought one another existed on the Philippine islands. None of these tribes ever owned these territories. Even during its eras of serving Spain & US as colonial states, Huangyan Dao (so called Scarborough Shoal) was outside the Philippines colony territory demarcated by Spain & US because they recognized China's sovereignty of territories in the South China Sea. At the conclusion of WW2, all relevant South China Sea islands/isles/reefs territories were officially returned to China under UN Charter & laws. The trick taken by Philippines to misinterpret or cherry-pick the Law of the Sea under UN will never stand up & China will crush any foreign attempt to steal China's sovereignty on these territories away.
