    The Nikon D6 will be the last camera body I buy...I don’t shoot film and I don’t shoot video...pure shooter that needs a body that is built like a tank, fully weather sealed and weighs POUNDS and not GRAMS. My D4S went THROUGH my windshield 2 years ago after I got rear ended...no worries...picked it up, brushed off the dirt and slapped on my 35mm f/1.8 Tamron and took photos of the accident site. SERIOUSLY doubt that anything Sony/Fujifilm makes could have pulled that off. You are right though, the D6 has to improve on the things you pointed out. At least make an effort Nikon...we know that this body is for the 1% of the 1% of LEGIT Pro shooters that are at major league sports events and guys climbing Everest and such...but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t just RULE. Why not go out on top?!

    I am late to this video Dan, but as the excitement, now near the end of January 2020 as of this posting, builds for the NIkon D6, it seems you had some very valid points. I too, love the OVF of the DSLR and as someone who has shot the Nikon D5 since it was unveiled, I am really excited about the updates for the upcoming D6. I think it will be the last DSLR for a while from Nikon, but for now really looking forward to the release.

    At last .........someone with depth of knowledge in photography uploads a great video in this dumpster called YT!! !Great points Dan, couldn't agree with you more. You cannot beat the OVF when it comes down to fast action / wildlife shooting. Of course the D6 is very relevant , otherwise why would Nikon release 4 top drawer super expensive pro F mount lenses within a period of something more than a Year!!! They must know something, after all, they have been into the camera business for more than a century.!! Whatever anyone says the proof is in the pudding.....we will see how many pro photographers turn up at the Tokyo Olympics with a mirrorless camera 😂. Not many I don't think. The D6 might not be for many ( due to cost primarily), but there are Genres out there that they are still the best tool to have and they certainly have their place in the market. Why all this hype with mirrorless I could never understand! I mean why can't both systems co-exist? Having options in life is a good thing no ? Nikon said that they will be producing and developing both systems in parallel, and they have proven that with the new glass for F mount . Great upload man thanks for sharing .Liked and subbed!!

    I’m sure it’ll be a beast but not something I’d buy or anyone I know that would buy. As an adventure photographer I very much now appreciate small mirrorless and they are as durable as I’ve ever needed. The days of hauling a camera like the D6 into the backcountry are over for me. I see this camera for photojournalists, large news/sports outlets, wildlife photographers or people already invested in lots of expensive glass. But as Ted Forbes said it will be one of several excellent photographic tools at our disposal and I’m grateful for that. Choose the best tool for the job! Thanks for the insightful video Dan.

    Every Camera matters! The question is should someone actually purchase a camera like this DSLR over other offerings. Zero black out, silent shooting, at least 20fps is what the Nikon needs to deliver to just keep up what I already own! Ergonomics of the sooner or later upcoming a9II would in my opinion be in line with the a7riv although time will tell.

    I like where your head is at Dan. My biggest concern is that in trying to compete spec for spec with the Sony A9, they'll lose sight of what makes the D5 the D5. I think the biggest problem with Nikon's non announcement is that they don't really reinforce who the camera is designed for. I think too many people and think that all cameras are relatively equal for all photographic tasks. This is not true. The Nikon single-digit series, the Canon 1D, and subsequent 1DX series of cameras are tuned for maximum reliability and toughness. I still remember the huge fiasco when the 1DsIII had AF issues, and how much of a hit Canon's flagship took a bath in prestige. This was especially true when Canon failed to address it right off the bat. I've either owned, or worked with every Nikon Flagship since the D1X that was released back in Feb 2001 to the Nikon D5. Not one of them has given me issues. You're absolutely right, Mirrorless is the future. Just like DSLRs had to, the technology has to mature. One area that mirrorless has a lot more room to mature is in ergonomics.

    Well said Dan, you raised some important points. The D6 is gonna be built like a tank; I predict that the Sony A9 ii (if it is released in 2020) it will stick with the smae body construction which will not appeal to pro sports/action/wildlife shooters. I just can't see press agencies making a big switch to Sony from Canon or Nikon for the 2020 Olympics; too risky as they may question the build quality of the bodies, buffering out when shoots bursts of images, overheating, battery life etc. The Sony cameras could be useful for Olympic events which require a quiet atmosphere so silent shutter can be used but the D6 may incorporate a 'quieter' shutter anyway.

    The ability to transfer an image 20s to 30s faster is major. It takes the D6 a second to send an image while a 1Dx Mk iii has to wait for it's images to transfer in order. Ex. Canon: Burst 16fps 300imgs transfer 1-300 (best image at 200, you must wait for the next 100 imgs to transfer in order) Ex. Nikon: burst 14fps 200imgs transfer 1-200 (best image at 200, swipe up, img 200 instantly sent ahead first) The Canon 1Dx Mk iii has a lot of hype but it literally only just caught up to the D5 in terms of specs, it's only surpassed it in fps and buffer, the video side is hype, you're not buying a 1Dx Mk iii to shoot video, there's plenty of cheaper bodies capable of doing a lot better. The 1Dx can shoot more images but that's negligible for those pros based on what they've said while shooting in the 2016 Olympics, b/c they already had sufficient fps at 12 and an unlimited buffer at 170 & 200 from both the D5 and 1Dx Mk ii. The 1000+ buffer is great but not entirely practical. I doubt they'll need to go passed 120 images in the buffer although Canon may with the higher fps may hit 200 during burst shooting.

    DSLR'S imo will be around for years to come..Serious sports and wildlife shooters will stick with the DSLR...I primarily shoot birds in flight and I can not find a mirrorless camera that can do the job as well as my DSLR...They are more rugged, weather resistant and the AF is far superior to mirrorless and as you mentioned dust on the sensor is a huge problem for mirrorless and the Canon leaving the shutter closed is a huge mistake imo, I would rather have dust get on the cover glass of my sensor than in between the shutter blades..But if I shot landscapes, street or portraits I can see the advantages of mirrorless, im not saying their all bad but as of now they are not for me..

    So you are completely right as it stands but mirrorless cameras don't HAVE to be less rugged with worse AF, and have dust issues. Canon's EOS R already has a sensor cover, Sony's 3 year old A9 has better AF than a DSLR in 90% of cases, and the Z cameras have great build as do plenty of Panasonics and Olympus mirrorless cameras. All someone has to do is build it all in a single body...let's see how long that takes

Im waiting on them to drop to $1299 and im going to buy at least 1 maybe 2..

    Why the D6 is the right choice for Nikon now? Because us pros are just now thinking about replacing our D4s (D5 mostly got skipped as it wasn’t much of an upgrade over the D4s) and mirrorless STILL isn’t quite where we need it to be just yet. The changeover on the pro end (if pro body’s go fully mirrorless after the D6), will be at the end of the lifespan of the D6. Hopefully by then the eco-system of mirrorless lenses in Sony and Nikon will be competent and complete 🤪😂

  • @bfs5113
    @bfs51134 жыл бұрын

    I suspect the D6's minimum improvements are aimed at the accredited photographers for the Olympics 2020 and secondary at the existing D3, D4 and D5 owners. Being able to serve by Nikon Professional Service (NPS) can be just as important as the new specifications. Something that isn't important to an average photographer. Unless its sale is beyond the expectation, the day of a D? series can be numbered (although Nikon still produces and sells the F6 SLR). Nikon had been royal to the Nikonians owing F mount lenses for too long and the Z mount cameras & lenses will give Nikon more rooms to maneuver. Although its dependence on outside source(s) for sensors & electronics and smaller in company size can restrict Nikon's growth in today's marketplace. Given the many other choices available today, the D6 may no longer be the preferred camera for sports, wildlife, pro uses, etc. for some people as in the past, but rather a camera for the "failure is not an option" without buying new lenses, jobs or projects. A heavy duty camera that is suitable for almost every situation (war coverage, in a cold or harsh environment, etc.) and with a wide range of lens selection to support them. If one thinks it is an overkill in our normal lives, then imagine as a citizen and photographer at the sudden HK protests or Dorian at its worst.

  • @nicholasxayasith55
    @nicholasxayasith554 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, most of the photography I love doing are within environments most people would HATE shooting in...snow storms, rain, bad weather, ocean spray...sand and dirt blowing around, etc. I haven't handled ANY mirrorless body from any manufacturer yet that I would feel confident about bringing out into those kinds of conditions and expect to hold up like a D4, D5, D850, D1x, and so forth. No way. I'd imagine that a mirrorless camera in a pro-body like one of those might be even slightly more durable, with no moving mirror assembly to worry about...but nobody's made such a thing yet. At any rate, yes: mirrorless is the future, but there's thousands of photographers like myself who are still using DSLRs because mirrorless isn't quite where we want it to be yet. Additionally, if you have 10's of thousands of dollars invested in lenses either as an individual or as an agency, it's harder to say "Lets go mirrorless!" for a variety of reasons. I'll be sticking with my DSLRs for at least a few more years, no doubt. That doesn't mean I'm sour on mirrorless by any means...but I can also see why Nikon is giving Professionals a D-body DSLR in the D6 and why it makes sense to do so.

    Agree with almost all you said. The lenses are the biggest thing. There is a huge installed base of professional shooters out there, and that really matters. I have a foot in both worlds with a Nikon DSLR and a Fujifilm mirrorless system. They do different things well. At least for now, I cannot give up all the excellent (and expensive) long lens glass I invested in with Nikon, especially with no real good alternatives in the mirrorless world. Even if I could, I would not. It just doesn’t make sense in the business model imposed by having to make your equipment not only pay for itself, but to be PROFITABLE. Professional photographers just wont do this if they are producing good, saleable images with their present equipment. Considering that 50% of the final image is now created in post processing, the hardware is less of the profit equation than it used to be.

    It might make sense for both Canon and Nikon to keep making the flagship DSLRs for another few years, hopefully at least two more generations. They can't kill off their best pro DSLRs without a top notch mirrorless, and the a9 will keep improving. Mirror or no mirror, what matters is that you have the best flagship in the industry. And the a9 can't compete with the Canon and Nikon in the real world where you can't fail.

    I have the D5 and a D850 and added a Z7 to the mix. I have an old D4 sitting around too. They are built tough but I did have to send in my D5 for a new focus module under warranty. That said the D5 is a great camera that never let me know bu tit is the last D I will buy unless they make them mirrorless. My glass collection is why I am not shooting the A9 now. I do not think the upgrade not he A9 was as big as expected. I have shot head to head with a sony artisan and we posted the video on tube as well. This was before the firmware upgrade but sadly the Z was not up to sony then. My D5 was and as such it is what I still reach for when I have to get the shot. I think that nikon missed the boat and their viability may be in as well. I was shooting with a friend who is also a professional and wow what his new iPhone will do is amazing even in low light. This is going to kill off the consumer bodies eventually and thus we have to many camera makers out there. Nikon is the smallest now of the big three and has no other division to lean on. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. In ten years who knows. I do know that after a string of Ds both single numbers and the 800 and 850 I have purchased my last DSLR and I am probably not alone.

    Dan Watson, I have probably aired some of my views enough, but let me say a few things here. I am a retired person who started serious photography with some of the early Nikon film cameras. Right now, I am doing bird photography with an A9 paired with a 100-400mm f/5.6-63 Sony zoom and a D850 with a 500mm f/4 Nikon prime. OK, perhaps a very small segment of the market, but I don't know... First, a very small point. If you start talking about "zee 6es" and "dee 6es", I literally can't tell the difference. I know that Jared gets mad, but perhaps you should call Nikon mirrorless cameras "zed 6" and "zed 7". As an older person (with disposable income!) I have a few limitations. First, I can't wait literally years for delivery on new lenses. Luckily I didn't order that really nifty Sony 400mm f/2.8. I will likely have been cremated before my inheritors finally got delivery. I understand that Nikon is unlikely to even remotely meet demand for their nifty phase-Fresnel 500mm. I suspect that if you are a pro with actual customers, they are also unlikely to be willing to wait months and months for delivery so you can get on with your work. I loved your picture of all those photographers chimping with their camera rigs on a nice gray day in the UK. Sorry, but using the rear screen on anything other than a tripod setup for a completely static subject is no fun and certainly not an example of "good ergonomics". For a sports or wildlife photographer, try to take pictures with your camera held at arm's length in front of you. Try it with a 600mm prime. In fact, if you are NOT in the UK and have strategically placed yourself to get good light, you are likely to have full sunlight shining on your rear screen. Again, if you have a good tripod and a totally inert subject then you can use one of your hands to put a Hoodman between your eye and the screen, but really this is not a good user interface. I am REALLY fascinated about your claims that you can use some sort of super-EVF pluggable into the hot shoe. Now THAT would be interesting! Again, thanks for the insights. I will now click "subscribe".

    Imo its specs should bridge those pro users towards mirrorless in 5 years by letting them savour the taste of mirrorless. Otherwise why would the upgrade from a d5 be worth? Would a pro get more money or fame? Adding those features you mentioned could attract upgraders from lower models than D5

To do anything else than wild life and sports much cheaper cameras will do better and at a fraction of the price. 6k+ cameras dont make much sensein how cameras are evolving. Why don't the camera manufacturers put a shelter in front of the sensor, exposing the shutter to the dust I don't think is that such a good idea neither. I remember on the Mamiya film cameras, there is a curtain blocking the film when changing lenses. Perhaps because of the body size, or maybe it's not worth it, the sensor is not that fragile as we thought.

  • @twmUX

    Yes, and more. Sony ergonomics are terrible, I miss my Nikon D4s so much when shooting on my Sony a 73 at times. I thought that I could ignore the ergonomics in favor of all the features but I tell you what, the immediacy and ergonomics make a difference. Last photo shoot I was on a D750 and my A7iii, and this just confirmed again that mirrorless needs to move a bit towards what a DSLR is in certain aspects, and then we’d be set. You didn’t mention ibis at all, it’s funny because on a DSLR there’s so much more weight and better ergonomics in a lot of ways you don’t need ibis as much(unless you get into big lenses). On a small tiny little plastic body, it’s so light and twitchy you need the ibis to help you keep it steady. Weight is always perceived as a negative but sometimes I don’t think that holds true.

  • @learningcameras

    @learningcameras

    Agreed. Only reason I didn't mention IBIS is that the 3 types of photographers who generally can't gain from ibis are sports, wildlife, and photojournalist photographers which is the main audience of the D6. Not that it wouldn't hurt to have it but I think IBIS isn't as big of a gain for these photographers especially because virtually every long lens has lens stabilization. I've seen IBIS destroy footage when panning so it's probably something they would disable. For me personally though, I love having IBIS but I'd be fine giving it up on a D6.

    I think that Nikon is releasing the D6 as it’s last DSLR. They will throw as many bells and whistles as they can. It was released at the beginning of 2016. So 2020 has been four years. There are hundreds of lenses out for F mount and very few for the Z6 and z7. Let’s bring up the olympics.. Pro photographers need a series of lenses for the job. They’ve invested in glass and won’t want adapters for these lenses shooting sports with a mirrorless camera. I do think that Nikon will release a pro mirrorless to add to the Z series. Nikon will add to the Z series with DX versions so users of cropped sensor cameras can use their existing lenses with a new mirrorless. Circulated discussions on line is Nikon is dropping the 3000 series and 5000 series. Any Pro Nikon Full frame mirrorless is going to rival Canon and. be directly pointed at Sony

    Both DSLRs and Mirrorless are heavy and bulky with attached lens - no big difference. The real competition for both systems is the smartphone. With a DSLR you get a beautiful viewfinder image for free, even when the camera is off. Never a black viewfinder, never out of batteries, very large advantage. Image quality is identical, most lenses will have equal designs for both systems; only for very wide angles mirrorless lenses can be made more compact. I think the future will only be for mirrorless when their price is greatly reduced, offering still the same tank-like built quality and image quality as a professional DSLR. If the prices will stay similar then both systems will remain.

Nikon is NOWHERE near the size of Canon, or Sony. Nikon sticks STRICTLY to optics products. They make rifle scopes, some optician equipment, lenses, and cameras. Canon makes office equipment like office copiers, printers, and other electronics. And do I have to go into the breadth of what Sony's portfolio is? According to the numbers, Nikon's revenue for 2018 was $6.61B, Canon $35.79B, and Sony had $76.90B. Why this matters is that if Nikon has a bomb, they are less able to absorb that loss of revenue, and prestige. The fact that Nikon can hang with the likes of Sony, and Canon, and compete on quality of products is a testament to how good those cameras really are.

If they go out on a limb, it has to essentially be a quantum leap over where they're at right now. Given their financial situaiton, and the time until delivery, that may not be a good idea. A old comment found, copy-paste :A happy thought , maybe competly stupid..a Bulky D6 F-mount? , EVF no OVF at all, no mirror but a small transulent AF mirror on a small light weight carbonfiber arm that flips only for the AF-CAM module like a normal DSLR has(20fps possible becouse of the light weigt and its shorter arm then the usual fullftame mirror dimensions and almost silent), simultaneously the on-senor AF system can "fill the gaps" in tracking calculations when the AF flipping mirror is up, 2 AF systems for tracking,it can masure the distance between background(on sensor AF) and subject (cam module)when the AF systems are activated, creating a short split second 3D depth scan proces, grabbing the wished subject instantly instead of a some trees in the back that draws the unwished attention , the on sensor AF for video(AF mirror up), if that could be technical possible, Nikon will have instandly on release the (semi mirrorless) system with the most lenses, the needed powerful DSLR AF system for sports..and in the mirrorless game at te same time. the Z's are not ready yet and it can buy some time for developing a Z-pro camera, keeping the pro-customers on board ... who knows what the future brings.. we will wait and see.. exiting times !! How to point Nikon in this winning configuration ?

Pro's are only concerned about how durable it is and how fast and accurate the continuous auto focus is. 20 frames per second is an amateur spec. As far as seriously considering this camera and Nikons old klunky low resolution DSLR lenses that can't keep up with modern Hi Rez Mirrorless cameras, it's bad advice. Dslr will not go away at least in a couple of decades or so, not in a few years like most of you here in youtube think. No hybrid, no mirroless, pure all the way dslr If the D"x" series turn into mirrorless it will not be call a "D", it will be call something else (probably still call the "Z") Also im confident that nikon will release other dslr series in the future like d860, d760 (which im looking foward to the most) and so on...(plus together in conjunction with other mirrorless series) Ps: Before most of you lot think of me being some sort of an old fart who still stuck in the past and doesnt like change, well, you got it wrong then. Im still in the (late)30s and still using the d750 as my main camera (for stills) paired up together with the z6 (mainly for videos). Sony used to have a translucent mirror camera (A99) that went away when mirrorless tech became better than that tech. Once Nikons on sensor phase detection becomes better than using a separate system reflecting from a mirror, why even have a mirror? Without the mirror we can get ibis, eye AF, and focusing in the corners. You can already make a stellar EVF. Nikon absolutely will (and should) continue the body style but I can't think of a reason to keep a mirror for years. Plus there is faster communication and advantages with the new Z mount so any F Mount DSLR would likely be at a disadvantage in 2-4 years. Mirrorless doesn't have to be small and light, they can literally pull the mirror from the D6, fill the space with an in body stabilization system, and then replace the viewfinder with an electronic one for the D7 most likely called the Z9
