I think this may be a defective unit. I manage over 200 Macs as a Mac Administrator and have started deploying M1 Macs on Mass. We have seen maybe one or two Macs with an issue like the one you are describing. My daily driver is a M1 Pro 16" hooked up to a Apple Thunderbolt Monitor with a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. My suggestion is to have Apple replace the logic board, I am willing to bet your issues will go away.

I have had a few issues with my monitors when using the M1 Mac Mini; both you mentioned. The weird visual's when booting up happened when using my old TV (which I was getting rid of but it did come by surprise) where the graphics of the Lock Screen would repeat it's self horizontally, but this issue would fix it's self in less than 30 seconds. And when either turning on or booting up the Mac from sleep, one of the monitors would turn on while the other just... wouldn't, but this would fix it's self simply by moving my cursor to the other side of the screen. And when it comes to bluetooth, I've also had no issues. Sorry to hear you're having problems with it. It's become my favourite computer I've used, but I've never encountered these issues and I can imagine how stressful it can get.

I have had multi-display problems with all the intel mac minis I’ve ever owned. Same problems you mentioned, except I never figured out the exact dance. So i set my mini to never sleep. And the displays to never time out. I just make sure to activate the screen saver when I’m done every day. I’m about to get a mac studio and I fully plan to do the same thing with it.

I can tell you from my Mac Mini 2014, I FOUGHT with the displays. It was so SLOW in initializing the displays. I'd have to just let one initialize and then plug in the second display. With the M1 Mac mini, its still slow but nothing close to the shitty experience with my 2014 do the stupid display dance. As for bluetooth, if you have your phone next to these things, it lags and sometimes stops working. Not unique to M1, by any cheap bluetooth dongle for a PC and you'll have the same issues. I just avoid bluetooth altogether, I know it not an excuse but I'd just never had good experience with it on any device.

  • @Technocrat.
    @Technocrat.2 жыл бұрын

Key fix: upgrading to 11.1 (from 11.0.1). To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. This query is only sent at certain times: • at startup • at wake from sleep • at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go • on invoking Option-(Detect Display) button in Displays preferences (from another display, such as the built-in) so try doing some of those things and see if the display comes alive. Modern Displays with multiple ports are sometimes busy scanning the other ports, looking for an input, and miss the query from the Mac. They need to pay attention to the port you are actually using, or they will miss the query. Some displays have On-Screen Display settings that can be used to tell the display a computer is attached on a certain port, or a certain port should be highest priority. Changing those may make your display more responsive. Some displays include their own private "sleep" settings for the display alone. This can allow the display to enter its own sleep mode, on top of the Mac's not sending it data. A display that is sleeping on its own cannot respond to the Mac's query, and will stay dark.

I get what you mean about odd quirks like this. In my case, I bought two Mac mini M1s and use them fully remote, on LAN. I found that the onboard nic would just become unreachable on BOTH every few days, and I’d have to unplug and replug the Ethernet cables to get them to connect again. I then bought two usb c to Ethernet nics, hoping this would solve it, but no, I have to unplug those every few days as well. Even tried port channeling the onboard nic and the usb nic, but no, still couldn’t maintain connectivity. So I deal with it and unplug and replug them every few days because they’re still an amazing processing value for the price. Side note: it is a joke that the base model is 8gb. The os alone always runs between 4 and 6 gb for me, so 16gb ram should be the minimum spec; not the upgraded version!

Ive only used wired peripherals so far, wireless has always made me a little skeptical. From what I can tell, its the metal shell of the mac mini that is blocking a lot of the bluetooth signals… would you agree with this in your experience? The plastic trim on the lower part of the base is said to contain the antenna… do you think repositioning the device in another location would help? Or is it mainly a software problem?

I had similar displays issues with my Intel based mac mini (late 2014). I guess it just doesn't like non Apple approved displays(?)... But at least heating problem is resolved, since Intel one easily overheats, sometimes to the point that it stops working (gaming for example). Nail to the coffin was destructive OS update experience: some apps disappear or need to be reinstalled, more restrictions every time, etc. I must admit it is difficult to gain trust for Apple afterwards but those silent and pretty powerful Apple CPUs may push me to give it a try again.

We have 2 m1 mini, m1 pro Macbook pro and a few m1 pro iPad .. so I have experience some of the problems. The bluetooth issue seemed to get better over time with updates and I can't tell you in the last year when it happened.. it fairly does.. but I can tell you certain power cables close to the mini seem to cause Bluetooth problems and some times it was the number of bluetooth devices by it. For instance Corsair Bluetooth mouse, Bluetooth keyboard no problem, connect my Bluetooth desktop monitor speakers and if the track pad or mouse are 2 close to the mini it breaks up the audio...🤷🏾‍♂️. Solution just to move the mouse or track pad from being close to the mini. Later mounted the mini on vesa Mount to the back of a monitor and now zero problems as the antenna isn't facing down on the desk. Also my mini never had display issues connected to 165% gaming monitor and LG 34in ultra wide... Never ever missed a beat. My wife's mini spazzs hard connected to a 1440 32in LG and curved Samsung 1080p monitor... So it is dependent on the monitors and the way they are connected. Overall probably still the best computer you can buy for the price period... Not as fast as my m1 pro Macbook for sure on 4k video edits, but... Still more than capable though for people on a budget.. just be away of power cables and Bluetooth device placement..

Thanks for your comments, monster mini! My MacBook Pro 2014 battery is dying (2nd time for swollen battery). Can't afford to get a high-end Mac. I'm thinking of the Mac Mini 16GB/512GB since I use the Adobe Suite (NO video editing). I'm concerned about compatibility with my LG UltraWide Monitor. It's about 5 or 6 years old. Do you think there will be distortion or that the Mini won't recognize then size and format? The Specs: 34UM65-P 34" Widescreen LED Backlit UltraWide IPS Monitor. The enhanced aspect ratio is accompanied by an ultra high definition screen resolution of 2560 x 1080. Apple's info for Mini Displays: • Simultaneously supports up to two displays: • One display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt and one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI The only other option I may have is to get the 13.3 MacBook Pro, but am unsure if that will be more compatible and if I'll need to get additional adaptors/hub. It seems like the HDMI output specifically on the m1 mac mini has problems with coming out of sleep/wake. Other users have noticed this over the past couple of years on quite a few occasions. Try using a thunderbolt video connection instead of HDMI - you may need to buy an extra thunderbolt dock to make this happen, but it won't be a lost investment - you'll want it eventually anyway when you upgrade your system.

I have 2 identical 27" Samsung curved monitors hooked up to my Mac Mini M1 and have had no issues with them. One is connected via HDMI and the other uses a USB C to HDMI adapter. However, one of my friends connected his Mac Mini M1 to a TV with HDMI and had a number of problems. After he used my suggestion that he switch to using a USB C to HDMI adapter the problems went away. I suspect it was a compatibility issue with HDMI. The Mac Mini uses HDMI 2.0 through it's HDMI port. My guess is that when using the USB C port it might have downgraded HDMI to be compatible with his TV. If you do some research on compatibility issues with HDMI as I did you may be able to solve your display problems. The Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse that I have work quite well with the Mac Mini M1.

The problem you are having is that the Mac mini has a Broadcom Bluetooth Low Energy module, which also does WiFi. Most mice and keyboards do NOT support the Low Energy protocol, and your mouse will reset because it sees the low energy signal as a dropout. A loss of mouse also freezes networking, as this is a non-maskable interrupt. Logitech clearly marks which device has Low Energy support on their web site. If you don't like Bluetooth Low Energy, then talk to the consortium.

I bought an M1 Mac Mini last year when my heavily-upgraded 2008 Mac Pro died, and I'm really happy with it. The Mini is extremely fast and responsive. It's my everyday work machine: I use it for articles, reviews, manuscript editing, research, emails and managing and playing my music library, so nothing particularly processor-heavy. I also use it for gaming: Hollow Knight, Hades, Limbo, INSIDE, Superhot, Bioshock: Remastered and even Sleeping Dogs and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided all run extremely well on the Mini. I've encountered very few issues: I occasionally get a weird green-screen crash, but only rarely, and these crashes decreased in frequency once I upgraded to Monterey, which I imagine is better-optimised for Apple Silicon than Big Sur was. I also hardly ever use Bluetooth; indeed, I use a USB wired keyboard.

There are several terminal commands you can run for this issue. One makes sure the connection is kept alive for that device. Make sure your power management is at full. Sometimes Bluetooth is finicky since it runs on 2.4 Ghz. Do you have the Mac on 5 ghz or wired? is there anything around it like your phone or watch that you can change to 5ghz? I love my mac mini, i use only 1 4K display via HDMI and had only problems to get it work with my KVM switch that is displayport, so it had to do with the converter from HDMI to displayport. You could switch off sleep mode, this is just a bandage because you are right this should be working. However, i really like my mac mini as a sound angeneer it is so great that is is silent and yet powerfull. Only had a couple of times the fans running when doing some heavy photo rendering on DxO Photolab back when it only was an intel app. For me now it is enough. However that Mac Studio also looks so good to me, but first have to find the money for it ;)

I bought Mac Mini M1 with 8GB RAM because of many video reviewers said that 8Gb is quite enough. But when I open developer tools like Docker, any code editor and start my playlist on KZread in a few hours (sometimes one or two full working days) I get interface freezes because of SWAP file operations throttle my SSD. There is the only one way to stop freezes - you need to reboot your Mac Mini. I've heard that the reason is applications based on non Silicon architecture. My last check of this issue was in November 2021. So I don't recommend M1 with 8Gb RAM for software developers.

WAY MORE stable on PC than M1 (when they actually work...) and I don't even speak about VR development: completely impossible on Mac now. And last thing to consider: it's better to use the same hardware than the gamers to develop and test your game. And no gamer will buy the Mac Studio just to play: too expensive and no AAA games available (+ most of the gamers are teens, depending on your target of course, and they don't have the money and the will to spend $4000 on a gaming machine).

At the other extreme, we have to look at the fact that the only reason the mini exists is to give Apple a sub $1000 desktop, and in doing so yes there is a lack of ports. yes you will have small quarks that occur which can be very frustrating. Yet for the price, you are able to run a multi monitor system relatively smoothly overall with just minor issues which tend to pop up at the wrong time. Good news is the issues you are experiencing will probably (or have been resolved) with software or firmware updates.

I'm new to the Apple ecosystem as I got my first mac (Mac Mini m1 256 gb hard drive and 16 gigs of ram) back in December of 2021. I got brave and downloaded Final Cut Pro 90 day free trial today. Watched a lot of tutorials on FCP before I started to use it. Between all the lockups I was having, I did managed to get a 1 minute and 22 seconds video clip out with some transitions and text effects.. I'm a Davinci Resolve user on windows and pretty much just do simple edits and don't mess with fusion to much. Thought I give Final Cut pro a shot, but the only advantage FCP has over Davinci Resolve is the text pre sets it has. Other then that, FCP has no advantage over Davinci Resolve. Actually, Final cut Pro on this mac mini m1 is a disadvantage ( in my case ) because of all the lockups while using Final Cut Pro. I'll stick with Davinci Resolve. I'm guilty of getting into this Silicon m1 hype. Thought I try a mac to see if this hype is true. With all the problems I had just to get this thing registered with apple and the problems with being able to screen share sound and video in Discord, not sure all the aggravation was worth it. I was told that "mac just works". Certainly, not in my case. I did get those issues resolved in Discord and other then the lockups in FCP, it is running pretty well now. I was going to try a Blue Tooth mouse and keyboard but not after all the problems I'm hearing about it. I will try Davinci Resolve on my mac mini m1 and see how well it works on it. I forgot to mention that I was only using 1080 video ( and still get all those crashes ).

I think the problem might be more of a like batch problem, like maybe a batch or two and ended up getting messed up, which makes sense because the dude that owns it before (because this is a refurbished or preowned Mac) probably had this problems with the Mac befor too. Now I did recently buy a Mac mini with a M2 Pro. I specked out this thing with upgraded RAM storage and ethernet port and it was pretty expensive not gonna lie. I personally have my own Windows computer and don’t use Mac OS or any Apple Mac at all and this was basically my first Mac. So some people might think it's a dumb reason, but the main reason why I upgraded and bought this was to be able to host and plot hard drive for Chia farming basically crypto mining, but a different kind. And yes, this is dumb but It saves me a lot time plotting and saves me some power and I essentially plug in hard drive enclosures to the USB-C ports in the back which for the Pro models they have 4 USB-C ports. But overall this thing, was great and I’ve had no issues so far. So for me personally except for the big hole in my bank account, I'd say I don't regret this. 😊

You say it's all Apple controlled stuff, but all your problems seem to come from interactions between the mini and non-Apple devices. That is: the non-Apple screens and non-Apple bluetooth peripherals. Not that this is an excuse, it's Apple responsebility to make stuff that their computers work with a variety of external peripherals and displays. Personally I consider non-Apple bluetooth devices to just be unreliable in general so for if I'm not using Apple input devices I always use a dongle and not bluetooth. Haven't had any problems that way. I do pretty much the same for screens (it's why I like the iMac), and if I ever get a Mac that requires an external screen I'll probably use one of their official monitors (provided the come enough down in price).

I used two Asus ProArt 1440p displays with the M1 Mini, and I was very disappointed when I discovered I couldn't use them both through a quite expensive Thunderbolt CalDigit Thunderbolt docking. The M1 can support a 5k monitor over thunderbolt, but not two 2k which is less than that 5k resolution. I ended up using a single monitor because of that. Even with a single monitor, getting it to wake up from sleep took forever and the experience wasn't what I got used to with Apple. I then decided to go with an LG Ultrawide monitor. That monitor has a vertical resolution of 1600, so a bit more than 1440p, but with the way MacOS handles scaling, the image is not that great. It's not bad, but I'm shocked to say that my Windows work laptop renders much better on that monitor. Not only that, when I put the monitor to sleep in mack OS, it shuts down for a few seconds, but then the backlight turns back on with a black screen and it just doesn't turn off again. That doesn't happen when I put the monitor to sleep on Windows, and I can't find a way to get it to just shut down without simply turning it off, which is also annoying, since it turns off the docking (the monitor shares all my usb devices with my windows laptop through Thunderbolt). Might sound like a minor complaint, but because of the docking aspect it takes a little while for everything to turn back on, and for the money I paid on that setup, it's just frustrating. The lesson to learn here, is that buying an Apple product like a Mac mini and pairing it with non-apple product like an LG display might just not be worth it! I'm sure with their expensive monitors the experience must be flawless, but anything else is crazy hit or miss!

Ive had two of the M1 macs and they both sucked. It was a bad year because i went thru 3 of them. Had the same dual monitor issues. I wake the mac up and my monitors are usually switched around. The wireless mouse stopped working altogether. I ordered the new Studio M1MAX chip, and i am hopeful it will be much better than the M1 chipset i have now. I dont need the Ultra chip so i think the max chip should suit me well. But i will finally be glad to be rid of these M1 chips on the mac mini.

I bought the 16GB Mac Mini at launch and it’s incredible. I love it. 4k video rendering with no issues whatsoever.

@@ismagine - I do. It’s superb. It’s just a shame you have to pay so much for internal storage, but the internal storage is way faster than anything any external drives will give you. I’d recommend going above 256GB if you can.

@@Station9.75 great thanks, my eyes are on a 1TB and 16gb is it a good choice or overkill? I’m doing photography and starting video on Premiere. That’s why I want to try it out since my laptop is slow for video. Do you use Premiere Pro?

@@ismagine - I have used Premier and it’s works just fine. My main software is Final Cut Pro though. Again, works flawlessly for me. I actually have the 1TB, 16GB model as well. It’s surprising how quickly the 4K files mount up because they’re huge. So I do think 1TB is the way to go. It’s noteworthy that there’s a 6 core GPU and 8 core GPU model. Best to go for the 8 core although I’m not sure it makes too much of a difference honestly. It’s just better for resale-ability.

@@Station9.75 thanks, all I see in the Apple Store is the 8core version. A basic iPad Studio is $700 usd more expensive but it’s the M1 max with 24-gpu core. So I’m trying to see the value on the mini with 16GB/M1 processor
