Why The King Korg Neo is Special (also let's make a patch from scratch on it)

Музыка

he King Korg Neo is a synthesizer which is special to me.
In this video I’m going to explain why that is, talk about some of the things that I enjoy about this instrument and touch on some things which I think could be better, and then explore the sound and workflow of the synthesis engine by way of making a patch from scratch.
Chapters:
00:00:00 Intro
00:00:40 Why the KKN is special to me
00:04:02 Underestimating the synth
00:05:24 It's multi-timbral and that's good
00:06:33 Exploring the powerful oscillators
00:32:15 The filter is great (but could be even better)
00:36:37 Oscillator drift makes everything better
00:38:06 It's proper stereo
00:40:04 The stuff I don't like
00:40:15 The V-Patch is limited
00:43:07 The reverbs are disappointing
00:46:08 Let's make a patch from scratch

You should have seen the prototype I did the sound design work on. Talk about a glow up.

I'm very happy for you reaching your goal to create factory patches, and on a very nice Korg synth no less. I don't believe it'll be the last time you're invited to do this sort of thing. You have a keen ear for sound design which is wholly evident in your patches that I've used frequently. They are wonderfully musical and useful!

a comprehensive video, that shows almost everything- but, the Neo has way stronger competition than its original 15 years ago. The Hydrasynth Explorer aas doing much more and got poly aftertouch for almost the half price! We should also talk about the bad reverb, no rev + delay. Korg has done a mistake for sure with this “old synth in new clothes reissue”

Korg's reverbs are very usable actually. I think they idea of this synth is quite different from what Hydrasynth does. It's not for synth-focused music and tries to provide a lot of easily accessible and usable sounds that go well with all sorts of other instruments - a guitar, some sampled or real percussion, vocals etc. Sort of the same thing romplers try to provide.

Why didn't they add the ability to modulate sample start for PCM oscs? It is easy technically and would use that control knob and would allow to add even more variety. They could just move between zero points on the sample to avoid clicks... Or not do that so that clicks would be a part of sound.

What I like about Korgs is they somehow always sound complex but clean even when the idea is to have a dirty sound like a guitar through distortion pedal. I don't know how they do it but the sounds of their devices are very usable, they tend to fit well into a mix.

Thanks, genuinely pleased Korg released this. Such a great VA synth engine but was in that ugly 61 key & terrible keybed. IPutting it in much more appealing package was smart move. It gotten labeled as a beginner synth but as you explain that undersell this complex synth. Great you’ve had input into it- well done mate.

Very good video. I have the big Kinkorg. But its a shame that Korg doesnt give us an update for their editor, library software. Not usable on newer Macs

I mentioned the issue of the editor to Korg. I hope they do something similar to the editors for other synths in this series because for deep editing, it'd be beneficial.

It's part of the Legacy collection - quite a few gems in there and Korg have been quietly updating them bit by bit over the last few years. Lots of classic 90s synths in there which are good fun.

well, that was informative. i recently thought about buying a new micokorg 2, because i liked the sound of the old one alot. but now, i think the kingkorg neo maybe even a bit better, with more capabilities and a bit easier accesable interface. kind of want to know what your thoughts are on the new or old microkorg, in comparison to the neo. cheers

Good synth but obviously not the same as OG one. I was waiting for proper review (like yours) to be confirmed in that. Good synth, rich and powerful but not the same.

It really would take an endorsement from you to consider this synth. And it's mainly because they didn't really market it correctly. Or much at all, really

impressive only if your new to synths which is why manufacturers can constantly re work old ideas put them in a new box and - hey presto a new toy . Hardware Synths these days are targeted at the uninitiated promising innovation and a world of wonder but actually give you less then even previous models or cheaper software -
