As many are aware, there's a new Joker origin film coming out later this year starring Joaquin Phoenix. As excited as we are of seeing the Clown Prince of Gotham get his own movie, one thing gives us pause: the Joker's LACK of an origin is one of the things that makes him one of the most compelling villains in comics history. In this Wisecrack Edition, we'll look back at how comic writers have utilized the Joker's mysterious origins to create a philosophically compelling antagonist and predict which version might inform the the live action adaptation coming in 2019.

The best way to start and end the movie... is with the Joker telling his story and, right before he kills the person he tells the story to... The person asks if it is all true and the Joker laughes saying :"Well you see, sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another. If I need an origin story, I prefer it to be multiple choice!"

This makes sense even on the Owlman from the Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths movie. Owlman is shown as a complete nihilist that wants to destroy all of reality because he considers that it is the only action that can have some sort of meaning. Batman even tells him while they fight that the difference is that, when he looked down the abyss he blinked. Owlman is, thus, a Batman that, just like The Joker, didn't find any meaning on his one bad day and instead embraced the meaningless of it, Owlman did the same on the deaths of his parents. Owlman is a Bruce Wayne that saw his parents killed in front of him, and instead of thinking "I'll dedicate my life to avenge this wrong and make sure it does not happen again" is a Bruce Wayne that went "My parents were two of the most honest, good hearted people in the world, and they died just like that, no grand scheme, no grand meaning. If innocents can be destroyed, then there is no innocence, if random events of injustice happen then there is no justice. Life is meaningless and so are our actions." Owlman is a Batman that has the nihilistic views of The Joker, without actually BEING The Joker.

I like the concept, that the joker had a mental breakdown, losing a sense of self, gets locked up in arkham and over hears mental patients stories and his own jumbled life stories, mixing them together and the 'joker' is the outcome of the identity lost. And batman put most of them in Arkham so he becomes obsessed with him.

I really liked the theory that Joker was a soldier. Probably a captain of a special task force which was sent to a suicide mission and left to die. Joker is the sole survivor with the scars. He lost every member of his team. Because he is a tactitioner, able to use many different weapons easily and he can fight well; this theory is the most believable for me. He doesn't exist on paper because he is deleted from every record by the government and the remaining top secret ones says that he is dead. He even says something that points to this theory in TDK. So his bad day is that day he lost everything. Bruce lost his parents which is a devastating experience. Joker lost every member of his team and his beliefs.

I like the idea of just doing a straight forward origin story-make it believable, serious and tragic, and then at the very end just show us something that puts the entire story we just watched into doubt. That way we (hopefully) get a good story out of it while still keeping the Joker a mysterious figure.

i think part of the reason Gordon didn't go mad is that he may have been mentally stronger, but more importantly, he had batman. Almost all of the jokers backstories include him being abandoned (usually by force, such as the killing jokes story with his wife and unborn child dying, and being forced into a job by the mob only to get disfigured by chemical waste) Gordon seemed to be almost completely broken but when he saw batman he still had some hope and while he may have cracked, he wasn't completely broken.

I feel like the Jokers multiple origin stories are what makes him so great. That being, not his definitive origin story but his many different interpretations that are told over different media forms and different plots or sometimes even several over just one single Batman story. It just further plants this seed of distrust we have for this character as we don't just get told one believable story but dozens. In the end, by telling his origin story over and over again the Joker just toys not only with Batman but also us, the audience as even though we may get the answer to our question, somehow we remain none the bit wiser or any more satisfied than before since no one knows what to believe anymore. This, to me, is what the Jokers character is about.

Read the poem The Shoelace by Charles Bukowski and it undermines the entire premise of The Killing Joke. For those too lazy to read a poem, the basic message is that it isn't the great events of suffering which drive the insanity in life. We actually have pretty good evolutionary coping mechanisms for fantastic trauma. What drives insanity is the constant little beatings of civilization. The car breaking down, the grocery bill, the doctor, the sandwich arriving cold and late from somebody who happens to throw in a rude comment. These are the essential ingredients to madness. It isn't one bad day that breaks people, it's the everyday *chaos* of natural existence bumping into the *order* of society.

alright, since your a comic book fan, im just gonna put it out there, since I know you know. the red hood and death of robin thing in bvs was very reminiscent of both arkham knight and the killing joke. so we should assume at least that the origins were killing joke joker. maybe since arkham knight connect killing joke joker with under the red hood joker. and that would make the origins that joker was a failed comedian. in this regard, phoenixs joker fits perfectly with snyders joker, if all this is correct. idk though, i wanted to put out this theory cuz wisecrack doesnt seem like they are really into the joker, just into dark knights joker, which we should never revisit since it was one of nolans suggestions to let heath ledger rest in peace (why we never saw him in tdkr). also from the footage we saw, there is a plot line where the joker talks to someone who works at either a comedy club or bar or somewhere where he had a bad show... or he was a clown. either way, fits in line with killing joke.

Have the Joker tell multiple origins with all of the threads being specific to the "random" person, which is in some overly complex trap, that he has is using to antagonize/lure Batman, into their next ridiculous encounter. You could have the last scene with them waiting for Batman to appear. Hell, you could even have the Hostage come to appreciate, or even come to agree with the Joker, to then pan out with the two of them eagerly looking in anticipation, while waiting for the Dark Knight to appear.

I have an idea: Why not use the joker as an narrator in the movie. Let him tell his own background story, this way we can never be sure if he is telling the truth or not. Bonus points if this story contains all the theories that were made about his origen, especially if they don't go well together and break the story if look ad with a sharp eye. He did fall in the acid, he did kill Bruce his parents, he was an comedian and he did have debts with the mob or did he? Leave it open for the viewer what to believe of it and what not.

Like, I don't think it's ever really implied unless the reader chooses to see it that way. Like, I would've understood a bit better if you had just said raped, but you said "brutally raped", as if it were crystal clear that's what happened.

The joker is unique because he is a trickster archetype, which makes sense why his origin story is hard, the trickster is one step below a god and is not very fathomable for humans. Oddly enough, Neo from the matrix is a trickster too, (he’s destroying the matrix, Heath ledger is destroying Gotham, their motives and results are foggy) but Neo’s origin story is there clearly and it works

That was actually Morrison that came up with the multiple persona thing, not Landis. Coined it Super Sanity as its theorized to be a coping mechanism "more fit for life in the 21st century." Also, I like the observation of Joker utilizing social engineering like creating an echochamber out of confirmation bias because I think it's also shown many times throughout multiple iterations as he always seems to amass an army of cult-like criminal followers that remain fiercely loyal to him and pretty much seem to dedicate their lives to creating as much discord as possible and aiding him in proving his radical absurdist motivations. Just a thought, though. I'm sure there's more that could be looked into there with that.

I couldn't agree more with the premise. I'm not the biggest Bat-fan in the world, but you can't be into superheroes and not respect the mythos at least a little. For me, I grew up on the 90s Animated Series. As a result, my favorite Joker stories are the ones about what he DOES, not who he used to be. In the DCAU, "Joker's Favor," "Joker's Millions," "Mad Love," the "Mask of the Phantasm" movie, the Batman Beyond movie "Return of the Joker," and the two-part Justice League episode "Wild Card", are all exceptionally entertaining Joker stories, each one with its own take on who he is, what he does, and why. The first two Batman: Arkham games (and, to a degree, Arkham Knight) are variations on the same theme. None of them touch on his origin, even in the suplementary and bonus materials you can find throughout each of them. He's just this nightmare, equal parts malevolence, goofiness, and intelligence. Even "Beware the Creeper," the DCAU episode that most closely resembles an origin story for the Joker, isn't as interesting for the history as it is for what he does with it. The same might well be true of "The Killing Joke," I don't know as I haven't read it. (is it any wonder Mark Hamill's my favorite Joker?)

A backstory for the Joker that shows him assuming whatever form most repulses the target, the form that is the worst they think people can be, and him using the power that gives him over them, using their own fear and willingness to hate against them.... that could work wonders, but it would be tremendously tricky to pull off without freaking out the audience.

The Killing Joke is important because it's the basis for The Joker's ideology of why/how he exists and how Bruce Wayne/Batman fits into, whereas James Gordon doesn't. It's why Batman and Joker need each other, they are the same. The moment where he tells Batman "the joke" is pure poetry. It's one of my fave Alan Moore graphic novels.

During their first meeting in Thomas Harris’s books, Clarice offers to listen about whatever trauma made Lecter the way he is, to which he responds: “Nothing happened to me, Officer Starling. I happened. You can’t reduce me to a set of influences. You’ve given up good and evil for behaviorism, Officer Starling. You’ve got everyone in moral dignity pants (hospital diapers)-nothing is ever anybody’s fault. Look at me, Officer Starling. Can you stand to say I’m evil? Am I evil, Officer Starling?” Then they gave him a shitty origin story... but Hannibal Rising didn’t happen.

Joker's mysterious past is because his creators Jerry Robinson and Bob Kane were undecided about his origin and secret identity in the 1940s when they created him. An origin story would just establish a new canon. Such a story would need to wrap up his military intelligence skills shown in Dark Knight, his mob connections, murder of the Waynes and Freak Lab Accident in Batman (1989), his childhood in Gotham, his comic book tech, Animated Series relationship with Harley Quinn, etc. This would be familiar enough to please Bat-fans. A realistic approach like Dark Knight, as in Neo-Noir/psychological thriller/gangster movie would appeal to movie buffs.

I for one love the idea of the film using the Joker to comment on the current political climate. If the Joker is more of a symbol than a man with a complete, concrete backstory, that idea is perfect on multiple levels. Firstly, the archetype of the clown, the trickster, has always been used as a challenger to the political establishment/elite. It's an old theater tradition. Secondly, the Joker being used in that way would hark back to the character who inspired his creation: Gwynplaine from Victor Hugo's "The Man Who Laughs". To be brief--very brief, as the novel is 306 pages long--Gwynplaine was disfigured with a Glasgow smile as a child to punish his nobleman father who spoke for the people. Gwynplaine, of course, grows up knowing nothing of this and becomes a clown, and even finds love with a blind girl, Dea. Queen Anne's court, however, discovers his origins and whisks him away to be reinstated to his father's titles. They expect Gwynplaine to be an easily-controllable puppet, but in an impassioned speech he gives in the House of Lords, Gwynplaine tells the aristocracy he's seen too much to be their plaything: "A king made me a clown. Your happiness is made from your neighbor's misery."

@@adidas-dd4dt Yes and it omitted that Joker has had an origin story since 1951 and it didn't ruin his mystique.

Joker's origin story has always intrigued me - after all, it's curious to know how or why the Joker is the way he is. But the mystery of his character is probably the reason why some people tend to flock to him, because it's so malleable that you can believe it to be almost whatever you want so long as you end up with the final ending of him being the Joker. Alan Moore's is probably the most iconic in terms of comics, showing a very good parallelism to Batman, and gives him the most sympathy from readers, at least to an extent. Ledger's Joker is very, very popular and one of the most iconic depictions of him, focusing less on his backstory and more on his ideology. And you can't forget about Nicholson or Romero, but I'm trying to make this as short as possible lol. Now there's a lot of opinion on Snyder Joker's origin. Personally, I enjoyed his depiction of Joker as a character, making him both a terrifying and mysterious figure. What I didn't enjoy was the whole dionesium-creating-immortality because I feel that was kind of a cheap explanation. I was hoping, rather, that the idea of "Joker" is like Ledger's - an ideology and "personality" that manages to somehow survive and affect different people throughout the history of, almost as though it's a virus. People taking the mantle of Joker one after another, unknowingly carrying on this "virus" until Batman comes. But then again, idk. Maybe it is best to leave Joker's origins in the shadows. I still liked the comic overall tho. I'm hoping that the 3 Jokers comic and the Joker movie is entertaining, at least. You know, lots of twists and turns, an unreliable narrator maybe? I'm pretty open minded to whatever depiction of Joker and honestly really excited to what they're going to show.

Uumm, what about Joker's 1951 origin story, portraying him as a failed comedian pressured into committing crime as the Red Hood to support his pregnant wife. Batman's interference causes him to leap into a chemical vat, which disfigures him.

The rumor about the film commenting on the current political climate better be wrong... I don't want to see politics in my entertainment.

What could make this new Joker movie work. Perhaps the backstory being told in the trailer is just one of three different stories he's telling to various Arkham therapists. "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another"

I feel like the red hood acid bath thing is pretty much canonical at this point as his de facto origin story. The exact details change just as much as any other superhero's/villain's origin changes with every retelling of the story.

You know, the joker looks really like the protagonist of Victor Hugo's „L'homme qui sourrit“ which deals with a man who was kidnnapped by child sellers who cut him the mouth on a way that it looked like he was always smiling.
