WHY the hype on SPC Upper Control Arms? | Vehicle Alignments EXPLAINED!

CLARIFICATION: The positive and negative caster on the page refers to the upper control arm adjustment. This means that moving the upper control arm joint as close to the car and the lower control arm joint as far away from the car would provide the greatest caster from the body mount. By placing the upper and lower joints as far forward, this provides the greatest tire clearance with the least dramatic caster.
Alignment terminology I found to be pretty confusing at first and understanding the geometry to realize why certain control arms were advantageous was also complex. Check out the video, I try to unpack that a bit!

Can you film the camber adjustment via the SPC UCA ball joints during the alignment process. I also have cam eliminator plates installed and set to max positive caster. NO ONE wants to touch the SPC unless it’s an off-road shop. But I’ve even brought my truck to an off-road shop and they couldn’t properly alignment it. I’ve spent so much money on alignments alone and still haven’t found a shop that can do it. Been doing it myself with the old string method and eyeballing the camber.

What people have to remember, is caster is basically opposite on the uca vs lca.. generally most people consider that positive caster will move the tire away from the firewall or towards the front of the vehicle. That's why the instructions show the front of the vehicle with an arrow. So to move the tire further away from the firewall, you need to adjust the uca towards negative caster, if you are trying to clear larger tired etc.

  • @wOhtest

No necessarily. In this specific application if you push your caster towards negative you will end up having to BMC. Instead if you push it towards positive caster you can just relocate the front fender and cut on the bottom just a little bit.

  • @6point1hemi

@@wOhtest you have it wrong. If you want maximum clearance you need to max out the caster on the lower control arm and then set the SPC to the negative caster (e,f or g). That will move the tire forward.

Apparently if it’s too high, then you sometimes can steer as easily. But I think if it’s 0-4+ caster, then you probably won’t even notice. Most modern cars the stock spec is 1-2+ caster.

@@OverlandEngineer Got it thanks. Do you also know if a bad ball joint on the UCA’s could contribute to a clunking noise when off-road? I’ve got Dobinson suspension paired with the SPC’s and recently have noticed a clunking over bumps but can’t pinpoint it. Everything is torqued to spec and regularly greased with ~30k miles over the past year since install. I’ve heard older SPC ball joints have had premature issues and all looks good but I have no idea where this noise is coming from.

Positive caster doesn’t help you fit larger tires. Adding caster on the LCA moves the tire forward, but then you’ll have too much, so you use an UCA to subtract some caster and bring it back into spec. So since this video is about the UCA, your talking point should be how to restore correct caster with a UCA by setting it to a negative setting.

@@myleshebert2885 Setting G will push the top point of the spindle forward rocking the hub back toward the truck. That basically undoes moving your lower as far forward as you can.
