WHY THE GOTHAM FINALE WAS THE WORST

Ойын-сауық

The show Gotham may be one of the most divisive between Batman fans.
People either love it or hate it.
... But even more divisive than the show itself was the show's final episode.

Also for catwoman, the most we got was when bruce and selina were attacking Bane, and then Bruce put that thing on Bane that attracted bats to it. For catwoman, the only time we see any resemblance of cats is when selina gets pushed out of the buidling by Bruce Wayne's clone and then a bunch of cats huddle around her

@@PHIL-SPENCER-HATES-XBOXCONSOLE Ok well, spoiler alert, the whole point for Batman's existence is to fill in for how corrupt & worthless GCPD & Gotham politicians have become in the face of deep-rooted organized crime. Obviously GOTHAM does not follow that blueprint exactly, because GOTHAM is not a show designed to make any longterm sense. It's just silly nonsense across various Batman eras mixed into one bizarre network TV show. But even still, that's why GOTHAM hands it off to barely showing Batman announcing his presence in the city. That gets the writers of GOTHAM out of explaining everything Batman has to do to clean up a police department Gordon has already been involved with for a decade, instead of Gordon & Batman both being new. The show you're proposing would be Gotham police messing things up either from incompetence or corruption, & then everyone standing around shrugging before somebody finally says what everyone else is thinking, which is if that Batman guy will clean this up, does he have a phone number, will they get in trouble with Gordon afterwards, etc. Your pitch doesn't work without Gordon being new & at the bottom, essentially like BATMAN YEAR ONE.

Lastly, I think the whole Gordon growing the mustache just to shave it off thing feels somewhat disjointed with the approach it has, otherwise, to established Batman lore. The whole fact Gordon shaves it off and dismisses it as a bad idea on one hand is the show being like, "We're paying a nod to the source material, but we stand by our Gordon." However, on the other hand, it retrofits its unique and iconic takes on Penguin and (to a lesser extent) Riddler to match the general mythos. So, yeah.

The biggest problem, imo, is that it was rushed. Not just the last episode, but the entirety of the last season. They had half a season to satisfyingly wrap up several different plotlines from previous seasons, and on top of that they decided to try and introduce several new things. I feel I expected more with Jeremiah especially after the end of the previous season, as well as a more satisfying conclusion to the Cobblepot & Nigma storylines, as well as to their feud. The show was supposedly meant to go on for about 7 Seasons, but we got four and a half. Unfortunately at that point it's almost guaranteed that there are going to be some pacing issues. But I will say I did enjoy seeing glimpses of more comic book elements in the finale, even if they were unnecessary. Just for the sake of it, really, dumb as that may sound. Seeing the mustache was cool, the new Penguin look was pretty neat, and honestly the character was pretty natural going in that direction in later seasons anyway, though subtly, so I don't see it as that forced. I did prefer just the green suit and bowler hat for Riddler in earlier seasons, as well as that tone, but oh well. Also, the leather yellow gloves on J-Crusty were cool. That's a comic reference as well, kinda surprised you were puzzled at that one. But that's just my brief thoughts on the finale. I could honestly probably do a small essay if given the chance, but alas, no one will read this if it gets any longer lmao

7 seasons!!?! They had "plans" for 7 seasons of this show??? 🤯 GOTHAM had 100 episodes total in its runtime. By comparison, THE SOPRANOS had 86. DEADWOOD had 36. JUSTIFIED had 78. THE WIRE had 60 episodes. Several of the greatest TV shows in history with very complex characters & interconnected storylines from the pilot episode to the series finales, & they all did it under 100 episodes. No, it's actually pretty shoddy writing if you get past 80 episodes & THEN have to take shortcuts to try & wrap everything up, which is what happened to GOTHAM. It's laughable to the point of being a Joker-induced psychiatric break for GOTHAM's braintrust to suggest they needed 7 seasons, or 150 episodes, to properly tell their story. That's not good TV writing, that's drifting through bloated network TV episode orders while hoping to just hit enough total episodes to get sweet syndication royalty checks in the future.

@@CM-jc7gk While I agree already planning for 7 seasons when you only have 3 thus far is definitely a poor idea, I don't see how that makes the writers awful. Honestly, TV syndication just _sucks._ Most shows are either stretched way longer than intended to the point where characters regress, plots are reused, and the whole thing is milked dryer than a raison and dies; or its cut short long before its time, and they have to wrap things up far sooner than they expected, leaving countless loose ends and plot holes. And it has little to do with the writers! If a writer gets their show renewed for another season right as they're about to make the planned finale, and they refuse to rewrite it to stretch it out? They'll be fired and replaced by someone who will. If a show gets cut short and they want to continue it on their own, as a novel or something? Too bad, they don't own the rights to it. The only sure way to avoid all that is to plan only one season at a time, which _can_ work fine; but it by far reduces a writer's ability to plan ahead and create truly satisfying, long-running experiences. But I've never worked with TV; this is all inferred based on what I've watched, read, and written (not published) myself. Also, I don't watch _Gotham_; I'm not specifically talking about it.

This show always had a weird ability to learn from it's mistakes quickly and adapt just enough to keep people interested. Like if you go back and watch season 1 it was originally an episodic "monster of the week" type format but they changed that to become the serial drama that it was until the end probably because the original didn't really work for the story they wanted to tell. Or like when they started bringing a bunch of characters back to life after killing them, or when they got a bit to much into the fanfic crap with penguin and riddler almost starting a romantic relationship. They recovered from all of these more or less and it ended up working just enough to get by. I think part of the reason why it worked is because you could tell they did genuinely care to create a good product and did seem to listen to criticism so people appreciated it for what it was. It always kind of had that amateur ao3 fanfic feel and that's basically what it was but sometimes they can have a certain charm to them. The finale was more or less in line with that so I liked it for what it was even though the entire series could've been a lot better.

Echo as a predecessor to Harley does make perfect sense. In new 52, the Joker takes Harley down to a dungeon cell and shows her remains of previous Harleys. It all could be just a sick joke, but considering he just moved on to the next clearly obsessed girl (Punchline) after Harley, I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of it was true. It is perfectly predatory psycho behavior. If Gotham got anything right, is the fact that they avoided painting the Joker (Jeremiah whatever) and Echo's association anything remotely romantic.

May only real issue with the finale is the time jump. The constant reminder is annoying, especially when characters look the same. As for the actress change for Selina, I recall that being Camren Bicondova's choice. While I still found season five entertaining, the hype for it was better than what we received. The season was rushed, the filler episodes could have been more focused on No Man's Land, and there's the obvious connections to "The Dark Knight Rises". I understand the issues though, and the struggle the series had when they weren't certain about how many episodes they were going to have. I've said this many times, but I wish there was more focus on the other vilains. The filler episodes should have focused on Freeze and Firefly. Freeze could have had a clone of Nora frozen. It would have explained why he kept working for Penguin and Strange. Strange provided a clone of Nora for Freeze's services, but she was still ill. Penguin provided income for Freeze so he could do the research for a cure. It could have been that easy. I don't know if the schedule couldn't work for the actor, but it would have brought the character back to where fans know him.

Bruce still looked 14 or 15 at best. It barely looked like the dude could drive. He didn't bulk up, nothing. It looked like a kid dressed up for holloween. It wasn't remotely believable, even for comics. That was the worst part for me. There was just no way they did anywhere near enough to make me believe that version of Bruce could ever become batman.. they didn't even bother aging him up at the end what so ever. Should have used a different actor all together for the final few episodes to potray the personality change and growth and make him seem more intimidating. Cause Bruce from the show, is not remotely intimidating in any way. Not physically, not in his cunning, nothing. Just never acted like batman.

If they make a show 10 years later, they could use all the original actors without any complaints because everyone actually is 10 years older. Getting a series where David Mazouz can finally play Batman, Camren Bicondova finally gets to play Catwoman, and Cameron Monaghan can truly play the Joker would be awesome

Ras Al Gual, the awfully handled Ventriloquist, and Solomon Grundy came in and died. The crime families like Falcone and Maroni were already dead by the time batman came on the scene and the GCPD were already clean because of Jim Gordon's efforts. Two Face and Hush would have been a good fit. Dent was already apart of the show and his evil side was already teased plenty of times and Thomas Elliot was in the first season. By the time the show ended, Bruce was already summoning bats. Instead of giving us villain's that were already teased in the show, we got bane who came out of nowhere, Ventriloquist and Harley Quinn who weren't even their original characters, and a conflict that made Bruce the PRIME suspect for being batman in the future. I think Dent and Elliot would be the perfect villain's. Dent can show Jim going through the struggle of losing Gotham's "white night" to crime and in the future having to partner with a dark night instead. And Bruce actually solving his first mystery would have been great to me. Hush could have even been the Bruce clone too.. OORRR Thomas Elliot actually being somehow revealed as the Bruce clone??

That being said, it was a fun ride. Seeing the reactions of the different people of Gotham to Batman was quite entertaining. Personally, I loved the fact that J(oker) knew that Bruce and Batman were the same person. I always enjoyed the idea that the Joker knows full well who Batman really is, but doesn't want to spoil the joke by letting on. I mean, he sees Bruce/Batman as his best friend. That's one of the things I liked most about the whole series, how the different Jokers ended up helping to shape Bruce in his quest to be Batman. I could even see Gordon knowing that Bruce is Batman from near the beginning, but I'm with you... Waaaaaaay too many people know that Bruce is Bats by the end of Gotham. He somehow took every great Joker voice mixed it with a little old-timey gangster and made something so uniquely Joker, it makes my skin crawl. I wish he would’ve been in a film.

Gotham finale was the worst? If by "finale" then you mean the final three seasons, then that's exactly right. First two seasons or so were great. Far far better than I expected. Then it just became really stupid and awful

Doubt you'll see this but if you do "thumbs up", but never heard of your channel, now you got a new sub, thought I'd hate the video but you covered it really well and in depth, I think the main trouble with the finale is that they were constantly threatened with cancellation. I'm hoping they had a season prepared for this "ten year" time lapse to wrap up to the appearance of Batman. Loved the series and hate the fact it didn't get the full 10 it disserved.

I recently watched the show and I enjoyed the final episode. There were a few things I didn't like how they mention it's been 10 years a million times and how Catwoman was recast, and they make Jim Gordon shave mid episode. But overall I enjoyed what they did and how they portrayed Batman even if the mask was a bit iffy. I'd give the last episode a 7/10. Not the worst definitely not the best but pretty good.

It was like 'spending time (days, weeks, months) regularly visiting a loved one in the hospital, but then not going to the funeral'---the loved one's life was okay and they were fun to be with, but it's just ... you don't get to be happy that they've passed on (which is why you go to funerals ... to celebrate the end of their suffering). But you're right about 'how Batman should've been more "a looming presence" than "an actual guy we know inside & out."' Sure, you could say that's what GOTHAM -was- for all the seasons ... but only for they who didn't know that Bruce Wayne was destined to be Batman. Maybe they should've done more movies that way ... possibly developing Bruce into more of 'an elderly gentleman who couldn't be doing all that Batman-stuff, until it's revealed that it was him all along.'

I think the biggest problem I had was that since it skipped 10 years it needed a lot of exposition to make sense. It just got to be a little much after everyone talking about Bruce being gone for ten years.

I believe the actress that played Selina didn't want to do it in the finale because she thought she couldn't pull off an older Selina

Here’s my thing. According to the creators, Bruce Wayne is about 17 before the time jump. The way I see it, they intentionally aged him up initially (his parents died at 11 rather than 8) to provide him some agency in the comics, so why could they not have had him dawn the cape and cowl at 17? Sure, he might be a bit scrawny, but I think it would be easier to look past than the recast they did; ultimately, he could have pulled it off. It would be interesting to see if they could somehow make a movie set in the universe of this show.

Gotham is my absolute FAVORITE show. I love it so much but I never watched season five. I was so completely satisfied with the season 4s finale that I wanted to leave it pure and perfect in my headcanon. I still watch stuff about it but I can’t help but see it as separate from the show.

gotham is easily my favorite dc show. I have rewatched it about 3 times now. I strongly agree with your points about the finale. I feel like the whole 10 year gap is truly what dragged it down. You are really gonna tell me the riddler stayed in Arkham for 10 years without breaking out once? That makes him look pretty dumb. Also joker pretending to be braindead for 10 years? Come on I know he's insane but that is just lazy writing lol

the finale felt like they had a checklist of stuff they wanted to do before the series ended and were given only one episode to do it in so they just tried to cram it all in. it was honestly okay at parts and some aspects really worked, as you said with batman's seldom appearances but active presence really built up tension of actually seeing him. but several other things felt way to forced. also not a fan of the recasts for the finale episode. I was very much in a wtf mode watching it as i liked the actress that was selina

Truth to tell, I never watched the show, but I can understand how you feel. Maybe if they had just done time jumps of a couple of years between seasons, with the first episode of each season being a recap of what happened during the gap, then getting to the end point would have been easier to accept.

I just watched it all for the first time this month and I loved the series even though everyone around me hated it when they watched it. I really enjoyed the last episode too but I felt what youre saying! Why recast Bruce and Selina especially when the recast selina DOESNT look 10 years older?! Also I didn't notice how many times they said 10 years or a decade holy crap that's like 40% of the episodes script
